Staff of Defense sucks. You can cast eith mage armor or Shield... as an action. But you can't cast shield as an action, because it requires a trigger that doesn't exist while you're taking your action.
Can we rename this series “Ted’s Top Ten”? Keeps the TTT from “Top Ten Tuesday’s”, but makes it so you don’t have to constantly apologize for not getting it out on a Tuesday, lol. Seriously though, love the videos, greatly appreciate them and refer to them constantly. Keep up the good work!
I personally like the shadowfell shard better than the outer essence as it allows you to give disadvantage on any save until the end of your next turn. That's 2 spell saves given disadvantage if they use the same ability at the cost of 1 sorcery point if you use something like subtle spell, plus any other party's spells and effects that use that ability for the save aswell.
Not to mention, if you use the Meta magic that gives disadvantage (for three points, but still) that can be TWO creatures making saves at disadvantage, used that a while back with Enemies Abound to turn a couple beefier enemies against each other...and they even took out a couple of their weaker minions as well.
@@samuelpaton7013 mostly free disadvantage is always good. Plus, Astral Shards free teleport, and suddenly you can cause some damage/chaos AND get away... possibly for only a single SP
@@samuelpaton7013 oh yea, I've actually used quicken into Bane, then Mind Silver, and the Wizard PC used Mind Whip on his turn (he went right after me) and it was absolutely BRUTAL...heck, I did the Quicken Mind Whip, then Mind Sliver combo on next turn... disadvantage, -2d4, AND the extra effects of Mind Whip... it's terrifying.
Draconic sorcerer's don't need elven chain, thanks to Draconic Resilience effectively giving them the benefits of the Mage Armor spell without having to cast it
As written, yes. One of the worst written magic items in the game. Though, since it's from Lost Mines, it's one of the earliest magic items exclusive to an adventure.
Not sure about staff of defence as it says as an action and shield is a reaction normally so it’s really only useful for mage armour. Maybe cloak of displacement instead as a better option for protection
For the outer essence shard, if you’re dealing the extra necrotic damage to a creature that succeeded the save against your spell but still took damage for like a fireball, is the necrotic damage halved too?
Well, guess I didn't do too bad by comparison. Currently playing a lvl 18 Sorcerer that got his hands on a deck of many things. Among losing all my magic items, gaining a keep, and lvl 4 fighter, I got the 50k in gems. The party had access to one of the best cities to find magic items so made a "wish list" of sorts (probably around 40 items expecting to find maybe 5 DM returned with Close to 30 so I bought the lot. Plus we came across a couple of legendary items so got roughly half the list the rest is augmented by legendary items or artifacts. Had 4 sets of Elven chain, lost one to the deck but was able to procure robes of the Archmagi. Helm was unavailable. not big on blast scepter so got staves of fire and frost. Got robe of stars and staff of defense. Definitely went for a staff of power and a blood well Vial. Haven't done anything with the shards so guess I should look into them. Right now my big side quest is trying to get an Internal tack. We have a lead to a guy that has either that or the flail of Tiamat either way I'm gonna get me a new toy.
My dm let me buy the Bloodveil Vial+1 as a clockwork soul sorc although im just level 4 sorc and level 1 cleric, at level 6 I can spend 5 sorc points for maxed Bastion of Law giving me 5d8 damage negation. When combat is near I can upcast Armor of Agathys with a 4th level slot, then when it starts I can move close to enemies and use Wither and Bloom to let me roll a hit dice restoring all of those points. I'm also a Goliath so I should be able to use 5d8 and 2-4d12+8 to make those 20 thp last for way longer than normal while the enemies take 20 damage whenever they try to hit me. Should be so much fun!
wizards vs Sorceror, keen intellect vs progidal power. Wizards make sense for not being as blasty, and having utility options cause wizards are meant to be the creative ones of the group
Staff of defense has a pretty significant downside, which is that you have to spend your action to cast shield, which is normally a reaction spell. The staff is still good, don't get me wrong, I just wanted to point that out.
The Staff of Defense isn’t as good as you think because it says you have to use an action to cast the spells meaning if you want to cast shield with it you’re using an action not a reaction. Still probably worth it on a sorcerer for the free +1 mage armor tho.

I've always been a fan of the Pearl of Power for Sorcerers due to its flexibility with Metamagic
Yeah, also sorcerers doesn't get spellslot back like wizards (unless you spend almost all your sorcery points on it)
Thunderwave at 4th level is 5d8:
1st lvl 2d8
2nd 3d8
3rd 4d8
4th 58d.
Bloodwell Vial with the new OneDnD Durable feat is super good.
Yeah, for now we have dwarven fortitude.
Also the Strixhaven Wither and Bloom spell

I just dip 3 levels of Hexblade anytime I play a Sorc.
Mage armor sucks I got a permanent boost to my ac with eleven chain. Mage armor AC of 13 now with elven chain AC of 15
For staff of defense, you gotta use an Action to use shield or am I interpreting it wrong?
As written, yes. One of the worst written magic items in the game. Though, since it's from Lost Mines, it's one of the earliest magic items exclusive to an adventure.
I was pondering this too. I guess since it works until the start of your next turn, it does function...but it sucks.
Cannot wait till Warlock & Wizard especially for any class exclusive suggestions. Not worried about overlaps cause of Multiclassing. ❤️
great video as always, but is it a bit too saturated? We know your favorite color is orange but I guess the video is a bit too orange XD
My camera loves to adjust itself on me
I played a draconic sorcerer in Lost Mine of Phandelver a couple of years ago and got the Staff of Defense, it was REALLY good

When you get to the Warlock, Their best magic item by far is the Illusionist Bracers from the Ravnica book
A magic item that I would have expected on this list is the very rare Illusionist's bracers.
For the outer essence shard, if you’re dealing the extra necrotic damage to a creature that succeeded the save against your spell but still took damage for like a fireball, is the necrotic damage halved too?
No since it's a different source of damage, the save is for Fireball/lightning bolt/etc, the Shard is just a free bit of damage

The shadowfell shard is a displacement effect? Maybe re read that one my guy it's by far the best one. It causes disadvantage on saves

Well now living in 2023, we know that they've since updated the Staff to fix that wonky action situation
Yeesss! My favorite class

Honestly I would be very interested in playing a sorcerer...if they didn't use charisma as their modifier...it just makes no sense to me
I think it's just legacy at this point. I still say it should be Con
@@NerdImmersion Con makes a LOOOOOT more sense to me as well but even strength or wisdom just not charisma XD
