I'll add: Always have multiple tricks you want to learn. That way when one starts to frustrate you or you've spent an hour and not made any progress, swap over to a different one for a bit. This includes "non-tricks" like kickturns, throwdowns, cavemans (cavemen???), just pushing around at speed, etc. All of it contributes to control over your board so getting better at just generally riding around should help build up your confidence and balance.
I also find it helps me stay interested in skating I’m trying pop shuvits at the moment and find skating around a bit after doing lots of practise helps keep it fun for me and shows that I am actually able to do a few things on a skateboard
I was on a rampage at one point, learning tricks in under an hour mostly and one of the secrets I practiced was to believe I already knew how to do the trick. Another tip you can try with any trick is to practice keeping the board below your feet.
Luke Garner pretending like you can stomp a trick really helps you land it. That commit. Being older now I loose my tricks quickly so I’m trying to learn how to retain my decade of practice haha
Number 6... DONT QUIT! I see so many kids start to get there bearings on their board or just start to Ollie properly and they are DONE, never to be seen again. Don't get discouraged! Everyone even Tony Hawk couldn't stand on their board at one point, the more time you spend with your board and other skaters things will rub off on you and you will improve no matter what.
This dude helped me pump on a board years ago, been flowing the parks since. I agree so much with the 'hanging around with better skaters' tip. Good vid
Hey buddy just wanted to say thanks for the info, I’m 35 yrs old and just picked up a board about 3 months ago. I just retired from racing dirt bikes and figured I would try something new, all I can say is you guys make it look a lot easier than it really is!! Thanks for the videos, I have watched a lot of different people teaching skating and your the best one so far! Keep up the good work!
Always practis tricks while riding at slow speeds. Never practis by standing becose while you practis standing you pic up bad habits with your shoulder positioning.
When you start to learn a trick its about feeling the board out, getting familiar with how the trick forms. When you're having trouble landing a trick that you've been at for hours and you're too stubborn to give up and try another day, that's when you break down the trick into components (keeping the board below you, popping right, flicking at the right time, rotating your body, rotating the board).
Shoes, grip and board play a vital role in your progress. Don't stick with the same brand like its a religion. Not all shoes are the same quality. Those $40-50 slides may be affordable and work for you now, but eventually you will realize that they limiting your progress due to the design. Save up an extra 20-50 bucks and buy a shoe that will offer support and can take a beating. The same can be said with other skate equipment. I recently bought a pair of Nyjah's SB Free and a new deck. I was able to bang out a nollie tre on the fourth try and a full cab with no pivot. I havent been able to nollie tre in over 5 years and it wasn't until I bought quality gear that I was able to land it.
All the advice this dude says, really resonates with me, I feel that this is one of the best channels for teaching people skate. I'm 29 and starting skateboarding and the advice given to me by this man, has motivated me a lot, I don't feel embarrased anymore by trying to learn skate. Greetings from Tijuana Mexico dude!!
Being the best in the group and explaining every step to do a trick also has its benefits. Constantly having to explain the detail of a trick, makes you actively think more about each step and perfecting them. Repeating is key
the best advice ive gotten has been from strangers in the park encouraging me : ) also big thanks to the skate friends ive met who taught me so much!!!
I never felt like I was making progress skating and my mates always ended up being far better than me in the parks and I constantly tried learning tricks that they could do that I couldn’t , then I took the vids advice and found tricks I was interested (mainly pressure flips) and found skill level wasn’t much of a difference it was more an interest thing thanks man you kept me in the sport
Justin Lauria do u got fb or some way I can contact you? I need a skate support on rolling shuvits. Every video I watched doesn't explain much. I can shuvit the full way but my back foot never can get back on the tail...
Sure, no problem :) I always respond to direct messages on Instagram (@justinlauria) Judging by what you've said so far, though, my guess would be that you're leaning more toward your back foot when you pop the trick, which happened to me when I started, and it was because I was afraid to fully commit to jumping right on top of where the board was going to land. I had to just ignore my instinct to hesitate and I fell a few times, but it got me used to putting my feet over where the board was going to land.
Tip 4 about gear is something I think a lot of people overlook. When I was first starting I got some 53mm wheels and had them for like 2 years. I got new 56mm wheels that were a bit wider too and it was like an instant boost to my ability, I wish I'd changed up sooner.
Haha the diss of Braille was funny :D and also a very good point. I learned bs180's, kickflips and heelflips before I could fs 180. I learned that one later on when I understood skateboarding more.
The Forge Your Own Path Forward is the best advice for skating. Dont worry about "what trick comes next in the line" because it's not like that. You dont level or rank up in skateboarding. You just skate. Learn whatever trick you want when you want to. I learned varial kickflips before I learned how to pop shuv it. Learn what you want when you want to.
Number 4 is something not a lot of people talk about but pretty important. I was using cheap chinese wheels and had a hard time landing tricks as it wears down. Then I switched to a bones stf and it's so much easier to shove and land my tricks
I agree with you to some extent because I learned how to kickflip before learning pop shovit and I am better than some people but not as good as others. However, I learned tricks instantly, I can get use to any size with some time and rarely set goals
Hi,Justin,i have been skated for about four months and not progressed a lot. Thanks for ur tips.I'll definitely put these tips into my skateboarding plans.
Number five was the one I needed - mainly the deadline bit as I have a kryptonite trick I cant get over and just keep making excuses. Time to pay the pavement gods, take a few bails and falls and finally get it. Deadline Sunday the 16th! Thx dood!
Been skating 14 years, even after listening to stuff I know this actually I feel like will help me a lot, I’m not a rail guy but I’m gonna be🤘 (the goal anyway)
Man, thanks I was just looking to hear this sentence : don't waste your time for tricks you don't care. I just want to learn the basics (Ollie, frontside180, kickgflip, pop shovit) and when I see some strange tricks that I don't want to I am like WTF HOW AM I GONNA REMEMBER THEM. But now I know I do not have to do them If I don't like them. Thanks!
One thing I can say is, just do it. Last week I could hardly caveman on flat ground because my mind was telling me my board would slip out. Then I hung out with my friend who I haven’t seen in a few weeks and I just went for it and caveman-d of a wall that was like 1 and a half metres high
Awesome video! Thanks a lot for these tips and actually thanks for all of your videos, what you say and teach always keeps me motivated. In a while I'll start doing tricks but by now I'm tryin to get comfortable just riding and carving
Good stuff. Thanks! What's the best way to teach yourself how to ride switch? I'm 45 and just got back into skating 3 weeks ago. Trying to learn switch but every time I roll that way I kick out and eat it.
Lol, I skated 8.25 since the start. Recently I felt I needed to change something and switched to 7.5 just for kicks. It made me a better skater and helped me do the tricks I could never do on the 8.25. so at almost 40yo I am a pretty old teen then 🤷🏽♂️
Lesson 4 makes me wish I saw this before I got back into skating, got a 7.75 board and she’s homestly kinda small, I tried my friends 8.25 and it felt so much better and more comfortable but I went off what I skated as a kid in highschool
Hay Justin love your videos man Iv been skating a year next month and your vids have helped me massively plus the way you break it down is amazing have you got any tips on moving and ollie ?
That's really good to hear, man. Thank you for taking the time to let me know! If you're working on your ollie, I do have a video on the easiest way to learn them: th-cam.com/video/JY5nCJ9zm6A/w-d-xo.html Hopefully there's something in there that can help you out. Thanks again, and keep shredding!
Thanks Justin I will check it out just having problems with the dragging foot part and you kinda need to flick the foot but not in a kick flip kinda way 😂
3:30 jesus this man is big brain why didn't I think of that. I've been so scared of shuvits since I landed them primo like 3 times so I've stayed away from them but this might help.
“Don’t waste time on tricks that you don’t really care about” Thank you for this. I’ve been trying frontside 180s for about a year and I still can’t do them. Plus I hate them. But I was told I have to do those before I learn any other tricks.
Idk about deadlines but i do set goals. I think in this sport its kinda hard to tell wether you are going to learn a trick in a day or a month. So i would recommend to pick a trick you want to learn and just try doing it. I usually just go and train the same thing for hours then not intensionally i understand what i was doing wrong and improve. But it also important to give yourself some time and do things you already know how to do or just take a nice ride on your board
Quit skating 10 years ago because I felt like I wasn’t getting better. Just got back into it and boy do I wish I never quit. Relearning all my flat ground tricks have been hell lol
Thanks a lot for the tips! Your vids are awesome, really helped me with FS/BS 180s, keep it up! Btw which font are you using for your video captions? Looks awesome
I'm trying to figure out what makes or breaks a trick, even if your skill level is good enough to do it but you're not getting it. I tried skating at a comfortable speed and tried waiting some time before I tried a trick, soaking in the anticipation to do the trick, and that helped me land tricks with more focus and presence.
It's cool to hear all these people getting in to skating. skate a lot, push even when your going uphill-NEVER CARRY YOUR BOARD AROUND- and don't ride mongo. I believe in you...
If you are 170+ lbs and dont know what bushings to buy, buy bones hardcore bushings the hardest they have, they havent ripped and i skate about 4-6 hours a week and with a lot of intensity usually. Im like 170 lbs and the bones bushings have no break in period and dont get stuck in 1 direction and they dont rip easily at all.
i've been trying to do an ollie for the last three days, almost four hours a day. It's very frustrating that my back wheels barely and most likely don't come of the ground. Yet, today I'm spending another three hours on trying.
Just No no worries , there’s always tomorrow, hope your enjoying the skating though keep at it I was in your spot a couple of months ago and once u land it your only going up from there
4.08: i bought my board from untrusted site and it wasnt original and its more heavier than a normal board and its 8". does that affects my pop ? bc i cant get my ollie high, and i do pop with allot of strenth
Hmm I personal think Arron is right Learn to ride and go fast then your ready to start is Ollie Ollie 180 Fs or Bs which ever u feel u can do then Pop shov Heelflip Kick flip This is because u can get board control muscle memory ect don’t start to go from Ollie to kick flip it will take u ages plus learning these basics will let u start doing extra things like varials and 360 flips and your progress faster
I'm skating for a year now and I practically don't enjoy doing tricks and can't learn them (I can't even do a proper Ollie) but I enjoy skating on ramps and bowls is it wrong ?
Definitely not! Skateboarding doesn't have any rules; it's more of an art form. You can always, and SHOULD always do whatever is the most fun to you. (I'm the same way, sometimes I'll spend an entire skate session just rolling around the skatepark going fast and not even doing any flatground/ledge/rail tricks just because that's what I'm feeling that day)
would it be weird to write down trick names then how many times i popped those tricks in a skate sesh? beacuse i feel like maybe that's taking things too seriously/robotically. but at the same time i feel like i can be a useful tool to progress.
I´ve been skating since November and I can ollie pretty well and do fakie and regular shove its but I just can't land that heelflip I´ve been practicing it for like 1 month.
I have been skating for a couple years now and feel like I’m not progressing but everyone else is. This is kinda making skateboarding boring and I just want to improve and have fun again. Any tips would be nice
i feel i cant progress past a ollie i have been skating for about 7 months and i cant land 180s, shuvs and can land stationary kickflips sometimes but cant progress past that
so when im skating i get tired super fast and drink alot of water im 13 ad i dont know if its a serious medical problem i dont have asthma or anything i just get super tired in like 5 minutes
I think that's a great size board for you, as long as you like skating fast and want to ride transition/bowls. If you want to get a little more tech, a smaller board will be lighter/flip easier, but overall it would be less stable, so I think you're good to go 👍
I wear size 9.5 shoes and I am 5’8.5” tall, I skate an 8.50” board because I wanted to do more vert skating but I’ve ended up doing more street and flat ground. So I think I’m gonna switch to an 8” or 8.25” on my next setup.

If you are a beginner, don't give up just because everyone is better than you
My ankles: im bout to end this whole mans career
Thx
Will do
I just can’t ollie
Blue Ghost Trust me the day you Ollie you’ll be open to so many new things don’t give up
I was on a rampage at one point, learning tricks in under an hour mostly and one of the secrets I practiced was to believe I already knew how to do the trick. Another tip you can try with any trick is to practice keeping the board below your feet.

Dude thanks for that i needed to hear that
*skate with people that are better then you*

Rozealinda Schultz that sucks

Bummer.. right
“Don’t turn it into a job” I’m kinda happy he said that, idk..
People take it to seriously and ends up trying to make it a competition. And it’ll just make it harder for you
Thats why Braille is always pushing Skateboarding Made Simple, even tho it doesnt work for everyone..
Shaved head, I knew this day would come, and I gotta say, lookin good
Thanks so much!

@@Layer88 thanks, it really gives me motivation!

@@NeverStopImprovingSB hahaha, go to sleep justin
Hey my parents upgraded my board I had a skinny board that I use for about a year and I got a bigger Santa Cruz I hope this new board helps me
4.08: i bought my board from untrusted site and it wasnt original and its more heavier than a normal board and its 8". does that affects my pop ? bc i cant get my ollie high, and i do pop with allot of strenth
Mano esse cara é o Vitor Sarro, só pode
Your eyes burned right through my head like lasers Lmao
Nice video though!
Hmm I personal think Arron is right
Learn to ride and go fast then your ready to start is
Ollie
Ollie 180 Fs or Bs which ever u feel u can do then
Pop shov
Heelflip
Kick flip
This is because u can get board control muscle memory ect don’t start to go from Ollie to kick flip it will take u ages plus learning these basics will let u start doing extra things like varials and 360 flips and your progress faster
(I'm the same way, sometimes I'll spend an entire skate session just rolling around the skatepark going fast and not even doing any flatground/ledge/rail tricks just because that's what I'm feeling that day)
Yeah I guess thanks do
Well when you are learning a new trick and you cant land it, you should film yourself and see whats going wrong.
I sprained my ankle, is there any exercise I can do to still strengthen my legs or get better without skating? I just want my ankle to heal already 🥲
would it be weird to write down trick names then how many times i popped those tricks in a skate sesh? beacuse i feel like maybe that's taking things too seriously/robotically. but at the same time i feel like i can be a useful tool to progress.
THANKS BRO
Let's get it, homie! 🔥🔥🔥
What’s that line on his head? 🧐
Good video but I don't live in a city , how can I progress?
make ur own obstacles
I started skating 2 years ago but wasn't making progression i just started skating again 😄😄
Sometimes taking a little break can work wonders for busting through mental barriers ;)
damn, his forehead really said “______”. no hate, thanks for the video.
Bruh 😁😁
I´ve been skating since November and I can ollie pretty well and do fakie and regular shove its but I just can't land that heelflip I´ve been practicing it for like 1 month.
I stopped improving 1 year ago, even tho i skate very regularly. I dont know what im doing wrong and im frustrated.
Try different things even if you don't like it
I have been skating for a couple years now and feel like I’m not progressing but everyone else is. This is kinda making skateboarding boring and I just want to improve and have fun again. Any tips would be nice
Dope! Txs
Great vid
Thanks bud!
Im trying to do a shuv it and it works good, but i got used to land only with one foot. Now i cant land them :(
i feel i cant progress past a ollie i have been skating for about 7 months and i cant land 180s, shuvs and can land stationary kickflips sometimes but cant progress past that
so when im skating i get tired super fast and drink alot of water im 13 ad i dont know if its a serious medical problem i dont have asthma or anything i just get super tired in like 5 minutes
I’m 5.4 and 13 years old, I ride an 8.5 board I know that sound weird but I’m a size 10 in shoes is that normal
I think that's a great size board for you, as long as you like skating fast and want to ride transition/bowls. If you want to get a little more tech, a smaller board will be lighter/flip easier, but overall it would be less stable, so I think you're good to go 👍
Me too bro 💀 I’m a size 7.5 tho in shoes I’m tryna get a 8.25 lmao 8 is too small noe
I wear size 9.5 shoes and I am 5’8.5” tall, I skate an 8.50” board because I wanted to do more vert skating but I’ve ended up doing more street and flat ground. So I think I’m gonna switch to an 8” or 8.25” on my next setup.
That sounds right to me!
