Now mongo still feels more "safe" but regular doesnt feel wrong anymore. It feels super wrong at the start and it will take its time, but you will get used to it and see what positive aspects it gives to ride regular.
Every skater respects skaters. Best way to break ice if uncomfortable is check if you are doing a trick and in someone’s way who’s waiting to go on the thing you are on. No matter how new you are the top skaters in your park will appreciate that a lot and tell you no we take turns or you are good they aren’t skating that thing right now but thanks etc skateboarders are a collective of misfits remember the best ones have spent tons of hours doing this thing they love and they are for sure passionate about it and would love to help you if you ask etc. It’s a good community.
Yes, we all have to start somewhere. I'm over 40 and just picked up a board for the first time. I love learning to skate and am luckily old enough not to give a shit what anyone thinks. But, at the same time, I recognize that I am a beginner and stay out of the way of people a quarter my age who are FAR better than me.

I carry my board how ever the fuck I want, because I'm 31 and don't give a rats ass what some 10 year old scooter kid thinks. Everyone else should also carry their board how ever they want to.
Started skating in 1983, and have always (and will always) carried my board by the trucks. Also, I generally push mongo. It's crazy what kids care about these days.
I mean I don’t laugh because I’m normally alone so it just makes the situation awkward I just ignore it and get back on my board as if nothing happened
52 and went to the skate park on my 1st day. Ended up meeting a guy about 10 years younger than me who was really helpful. Had a fat time and he even let me ride a couple of his boards. Now 3 days in and loving it.
Same here. Late 50s and meet younger guys that have been helpful. Just moved to new area and scoping out parks, also looking for ditches. Just bought my granddaughter a new board (5 year old) and plan on taking her along as she's showing an interest.
It's like anything. Don't be scared of the thing. Do the thing a lot. Let people laugh at you sometimes. (Just take it in stride, you do look kinda funny) Don't be afraid to fail. That's how you get better at anything, skating is no different.
Kryptonic IceShard don’t be afraid to get ran over by cars don’t be afraid to ride down the alley on your belly looking at the ground extremely fast losing balance
Shed your fear. One of the main things about learning something new is to not worry how you look. The same people that will give you too little credit at the beginning will give you too much credit after you figure things out. Both messages only messes up your game, so it's best not to care and focus on your craft. People will always misappropriate your credit, progress doesn't lie, focus on your results instead of how you look.
I started about a month ago but I'm not allowed to skate every day or even every week because I'm a smol boi and have school plus it's winter and I did almost everything in this video at one point, but it helped me correct my mistakes and be more comfortable skating (even though I still suck 😂)

I also have been made fun of and have seen it happen to others, u just gotta get better than they’ll see that ur in it for the love of the sport and not to look like a “skater”

Tip: if you don’t want to break bones or sprain your ankles, GO FAST. Learn all your tricks going fast. This requires you to learn how to fall correctly (rolling back up to being on your feet), but in the long run, your weight won’t be coming straight down but always forward. This means less gravity pulling on your ankles and knees and shins toward the center of the earth and more force pulling you diagonal and therefore into a slide or roll when you fall (fail). You will end up with more road rash but that’s better than being out for four months as your muscles waste away in a cast. Tip #2: if you do end up in a cast, take a supplement called Glutamine EVERY DAY. It limits muscle wasting (why your arm gets skinny in a cast) and maintains the strength of unused muscles (you’ll keep your muscle memory AND your muscles after your cast is removed!). Tip #3: Go fast. Get some good bearings (Bones Swiss are always a favorite staple). Go fast. Shred around and learn how to get the most out of your pushes. Go fast. It’s more fun and you feel all burly with the wind in your face roaring in your ears. Go fast. A skateboard is a toy. Never forget that. It’s meant to be a fun thing to play with. Soooooooooooooooooo GO FAST!
KDRS I always get mine at Zumiez, there is probably one in your town. However many people do prefer to buy them at local skate/sports shops, you could Google some in your area.
Few more hints on how not to look like a beginner. 1. Do a kickflip down a 17 stair. 2. Get on the cover of an issue of Thrasher. 3. Beat Nyjah in Street League (or the x games). Win SOTY. Hope that helps!
I just started skateboarding again and videos like this make me worry about the wrong things. This guy may have helped me learn how to pop-shovit but he sure makes you think that everything you do is gonna be blamed, and honestly, so what? Skateboarding is for myself, not for people to look at me. So my best advice is do not listen to all this "poser, not poser" bullcrap videos and coments and just do whatever you want and HOWEVER you want it. Make it your own style even. But don't ever let anyone's opinion get in the way. Tony Hawk himself mallgrabs. That should destroy the whole purpose of this video
tony hawk is a vert skater most vert skaters mall grab and if your gonna take skating serious your gonna listen to other people its not a bad thing its more of taking advice and using it to ur advantage create ur own style as you learn from other people skating it just makes skating ten times better when you know what your doing
@@annablaster Vert skaters use ramps with steep vertical incline (hence the name) to do tricks in the air. (As opposed to street skaters, like Rodney Mullen, who focus more on ground tricks.)
@@ervvixx2204 When it comes to technique i listen to anybody who had more experience than me. But when it comes to "poser" and "what to not do to not look like a beginner" i just disagree. This makes beginners more scared than anything and it's not what an experienced skateboarder should say
@@Placidboy9io that one is really easy. You basically put your front foot with your toe in the nose pocket and your heel over the bolts, and then simultaneously put your back foot down on the ground and pop the nose of the board with your front foot. As long as you pop it straight it will hit the back of your leg and you can catch it with your non-dominant hand.
I agree with everything except I never understood the problem with holding your board by the truck. If you hold it by the nose or the side, your fingertips get chewed up by the griptape. Not to mention every hipster walking around a college campus holds their Pennyboard/ longboard by the side. I say carry the board however you want :) or better yet, just ride it!
Your fingers do NOT get chewed up by the grip tape lol. If you are worried about your fingers you shouldn't grab it by the truck, because if you do grinds the trucks become jagged and there are small sharp pieces of aluminum. That pennyboard/longboard thing did not make any sense.
In the mid 90s when skateboarding began to gain traction many used it as a fashion prop and hung around malls to look “cooler” thus the name mall grab many who used this as a prop were “poser” thus the name mall grab and that’s why people associate it with being a poser
Hate to say it, but maybe you just have sensitive fingers. I’ve used plenty of grip tape brands, plenty that have very rough and deep pockets but I’ve never “torn my fingers up”...and i find it funny how you say “carry your board how you want” and in the same post you mention longboarding and pennyboarding “hipsters” as if they’re inferior for what they ride lol.
I liked the beginning. I’m starting out, and I’ll actively tell people “Hey, I’m really new, if I’m in your way just let me know.” People have been universally supportive and cool.
When I started skating 2 years ago. I went to the skate park I made sure everyone knows that I am a beginner why is that? Because i got everyone to help me learn and the locals did a good job 👏 i am comfortable on my board now and I can perform fairly good. Don’t be afraid to look like a beginner because thats the truth go with it and you’ll be able to skate in no time
Dude, I was skating mongo before this guy was even born. Never stopped me. Do what feels good and is fun. Also, the beginner stage is one of the best times you'll have when undertaking any new discipline, provided you go into it with the right attitude. Worrying about looking like a noob is not the right attitude.
I skated mongo for many years. Learning to push regular was one of the best things I ever did for my skating, once you learn to push regular you'll wonder on what planet you could've ever thought mongo felt better or more "natural". By all means skate however the hell you want, skateboarding shouldn't have hard & fast rules, but as a former mongo skater I genuinely believe pushing regular is straight up objectively better in every way, and I could not recommend breaking that habit highly enough.
I agree but at the same time he’s just trying to help the beginners to be “better.” And it might be time for a kid to stop mall grabbing and mongo kicking😂
When I was 17, after skating for over 4 years, the "mall grab" saved my legs when a car going through traffic lights hit me. The board slapped along my entire leg and protected me (and I flipped over the car). Had I been carrying the board like you suggest, my legs would have been broken and I could have been dragged under the car and died. The "mall grab", since 1974, has been the only sensible way to carry your board. The car was totally screwed by my wheels and trucks, my board was fine and I skated away after the police came for the driver. GO MALL GRAB!
After watching this I video and reading this comment I think the mall grab is actually cool cause it’s taboo - and if it bugs someone to see a kook like me mall grabbing? Well that’s actually awesome lol
By saying “don’t mall grab” it just makes me want to do it more. Who cares what others think, be yourself and do it if it makes you happy. If it saves your legs in a car accident, that’s also a bonus'
There’s nothing really wrong with these right? Like I’m about so start skating once I finally get a board, and I feel I might need to perform some of these “noobie” methods to get better
Correct, any of these things are totally fine. The point is that however you gotta do it, just get a board and get to a skatepark (because it's amazing!)
Don't even worry about it, just enjoy skating and the feeling of landing a trick and practice these m to help you feel more relaxed on your board and you'll be sorted
Dude, i ALWAYS push mongo, and ALWAYS won skate races with people that push normal...trust me, it's only a matter of aesthetics, mongo will allow you to go faster due to the reach, and also you can steer the board while pushing. Try steering pushing "normal"....😉
I live in a bad area and constantly paranoid about someone trying to steal my expensive skateboard so I hold it mall grab for extra grip in case it ever happens really don’t see the problem
Impulse not rly, just a lot of little kids but for the most part is the skating community being toxic for all scooters rather than just the little fucks on razers that almost kill you

i used to push mongo as well, like he said in the vid, i took some time to switch, and within 3 seshes i was pushing regular. Also that helmet bs means nothing, wearing a helmet is smart and safe, if people have a problem with it, they probably hit their head already..
i started skating a few weeks ago and when i went to the skate park, it seemed like everyone was so mean and would make fun of me, especially because im a girl skater lmfao turns out skaters are really great people and they approached me and taught me how to drop down a ramp so that was cool i guess lmao
if i'm feeling the urge and it's light outside, i just got for it. i have trouble sleeping so i'm usually awake most of the night. but there's nothing stopping me and it's honestly kinda fun skating at like 5/6am when the sun is rising
Hahahahaha hahahahaha! Holy shit! This just hit me as soon as I read your comment. I’ve been skating since 1990. I think I watched it to see if I disagree with some of the tips and it turns out I do.
@@demostessque4847 break it down in three steps and practice it "in the dry"... yes, literally go jump off with your backfoot while your frontfoot starts just a wee bit (fraction of a second) ahead of it, mix all that with an "n" motion and you'll get an ollie. you can do that without a board at first...if done correctly and if you'd move sideways (like being on the board) it should like someone imitating a jumping horse also don't move your frontfoot forward, just move up along the griptape...the "forward" will implement itself on its own - e.g. on the topmost point you are to push the board forward, if you don't you won't get it up very high (but just leave that for another day)

I skated at a teen and only ever learned to push mongo. I was never made to feel stupid for doing so. I even learned to use a bit of weight through my heel to correct any deviation of the board when pushing off. Just go with what feels comfortable if it gets you out skating and enjoying it.
I asked my mom if she could drive me to the skate park one day. i'm just hoping that no one else will be there. but im trying to not care about what people think of me.

you shouldn't care what other skaters think of you and if they give you any serious trouble just grab your board in a mall grab and clobber them with it and they will stop...

the stigma behind the mall grab blows my mind lmao boards are often suspened by their trucks for display purposes so it's only natural one would think to hold it like that, plus it's just super convenient
Millie Flips hey man I just want to say, I have been skating for about 1 year now and this week it has been my first time going to a park. It was honestly the best decision I’ve have made it’s super fun and nobody cares if you can land a Ollie it’s just fun to have park experience because you learn so much new things. I can’t land a kick flip but I can Ollie while moving and land a euro gap but I learned theat going to the park so I say just go for it
Don't wait until u get a kickflip, just go now because a skatepark can teach you board control & lots of other important things & you'll probably learn to kickflip even faster if u go to skateparks
First rule of life if you want to be a REAL skateboarder...don't a give a f about what anybody thinks. Do what you want at all times and give the finger to anyone who has a problem. I ride a 10" board, mongo, with mismatched trucks and wheels, wearing pink checkerboard vans and a thrasher shirt hanging out of my back pocket...and it's cool to my old ass, that's all I care about.
Exactly! If you want to tell me how to live, I'll show you why you don't want me to mall grab my board. The video is garbage, literally telling you to not do tricks like the trick pushing mongo is an easy trick for a beginner anyways.
actually its not that but its when I get on the board I feel like the board will just teleport into the future without me and I fall and break my elbow
You'll find most guys who have been skating for any length of time to be helpful and willing to offer advice as long as you are receptive to hearing it. Skateboarding really comes down to 3 things regardless of your level of experience. Perseverance, repetition and eventually progression. What I would say to beginners is please have some situational awareness while at the park. Watch what lines other skaters are doing and be aware of which obstacles they are using so you don't accidentally cut them off or "snake" them as it's referred to.
sub to pewds it could happen but don’t get discouraged just keep showing up If it’s a real hassle hit it in the morning till you get the confidence and skill you feel you need to hit it at prime time IMO though morning is prime time no ones there so you won’t get in anyone’s way and you can try new things like vert without feeling dumb for falling
It just depends on what you learn when you first start skating, when I first got a skateboard I taught myself and that's just what felt natural to me at first, and now it's a habit I need to break.
Mongo is much more stable to foot drag as well as allows you to pivot the board while pushing. It's more ideal for cruising, but certain no comply variations work better with it.
24 years ago I had poop foot. Thanks to my fellow skate brethren I was able overcome this disease. this was an affliction that had hurt many people and had to be addressed. After an intervention and shown the ill of my crap foot i took action to better myself and those around me. Being goofy i duct taped my right shoe to the front of an old deck, set her up and began the healing process. Within days I felt totally different. No lunging off balance, awkward stares from concerned citizens(except for the ones who realized this psycho taped his shoe to his board). And it worked quick. After about a week I removed the tape and my muscle memory had gotten used to proper pushing with my back foot and was no longer afflicted with stank leg. If you know of others that need saved from this mongoism consider the method that saved me 24 years ago. If they are not willing to acknowledge their wrongdoings then drastic measures may be neccesary. At college, for example, do not be afraid to yell as loudly as possible "Get your smelly arse stank leg outta here, sh#t foot." Or bust a smooth back tail to show that skateboarding can look good instead of looking like lunging homosexuals who credit carded each other for fun. One thing I can say about my prior mongoism that was helpful later on in skating switch stance I push with my back foot. So at no time do I hurt myself or others with some smelly arse poop leg. I mean seriously I love Kalis but after a dope bs noseblunt to fakie the last thing I wanna see before the switch crooks is pushing mongo. Be respectful of others and say no to sh#t foot.
stOrYTimE: so ok i went to the skate park with my mom and dad they were sitting on a bench n stuff so some other skaters saw me struggling and helped me out and whenever i did a trick they clapped c:
Why somebody who is a beginner wouldn't actually want to look like a beginner is beyond me.....if you are a beginner, be happy about it. I am 41 yo and I am a beginner and I couldn't care less how I look on a skateboard, as long as I enjoy myself.

I have always loved skating, started out in the golden age in 75 when I was a kid, skated until 83, stopped, and picked it up in 88,89, but life got in the way and I haven't been on a board since. Now I am old but the love of skating hasn't left, so I am going to get back into it, of course, everything is going to be new to me, but I am going to dedicate serious time to this.
Just leave your board at home and show up all padded out and send hard for an hour or so rolling around the park an hour or so... bring a full face and really practice!
Tip: don’t listen to anyone if they make fun of you, just say you don’t care what they think of you. Always be yourself, that is the best thing you can do.
Huge tip! Go to a skate park with a friend that skates! It’s really easy to piggy back off heir confidence and you can joke around with them and not be on your own.

Okay listen, skateboarders will be MORE then happy to help you with your progression in skateboarding. Just go out and have fun don’t worry about anything. Just bring some water to the sesh. And don’t sit on anything that is meant to be skated on. Another thing don’ get caught up worrying about how you look skateboarding, other people are too worried focusing on landing their own tricks to worry about you.
This was actually super helpful. I started longboarding this year and I sucked at it for a couple months. My roommate showed me to pivot straight when pushing and to learn how to balance on my front foot. I tried it for a day or so and when it clicked it completely changed my confidence towards boarding. I've been riding every day and want to eventually order a custom skateboard and a cruiser so I can have one of each!
I'm glad there's people that are nice about skating. I have been skating for about 14 years. It's really good to see beginners getting help from other people.

There is nothing wrong with looking like a beginner if you ARE a beginner.

Soooooooooooooooooo

It's undoubtedly a silly thing to worry about haha Love your vids by the way Justin!!
@Logan Richardson I was thinking the same. If your griptape isn't cutting your fingers, it's either really old or you're using a crappy brand

How DARE you
When I was 17, after skating for over 4 years, the "mall grab" saved my legs when a car going through traffic lights hit me.

I ride a 10" board, mongo, with mismatched trucks and wheels, wearing pink checkerboard vans and a thrasher shirt hanging out of my back pocket...and it's cool to my old ass, that's all I care about.
this sounds awful
my dude!!!! 😎😍😘
@@riccardosb1756 hence the golden key, not giving a shit about your opinion and others haha
I went to a skatepark for the first time 2 weeks into my "journey of skating" and i got roasted so hard lmao
sub to pewds it could happen but don’t get discouraged just keep showing up
If it’s a real hassle hit it in the morning till you get the confidence and skill you feel you need to hit it at prime time
IMO though morning is prime time no ones there so you won’t get in anyone’s way and you can try new things like vert without feeling dumb for falling
this makes me sad
Oh that kinda made me mad...
Dw lol it's part of the process
That’s not fair you shouldn’t be treated like that those retards must have forgotten that they were beginners at first too🤦♀️
No wonder he has like no hair on his head, it’s because the grip tape rubbed it off
Atticus Andrews I’m weak
You2Sneaky just be strong it’s not that hard
Atticus Andrews lmaooo

💀💀 bruh 😂😂
mongo pushers blow my mind. see them everywhere on campus, and it's just so natural for them... wild
It just depends on what you learn when you first start skating, when I first got a skateboard I taught myself and that's just what felt natural to me at first, and now it's a habit I need to break.
is it really bad to push mongo? that just how i leaned and it’s comfortable and i don’t see anything wrong with it
Mongo is much more stable to foot drag as well as allows you to pivot the board while pushing. It's more ideal for cruising, but certain no comply variations work better with it.
Mongo is short for mongoloid for a reason, stay tuned for the documentary until next time, Obama did 911
24 years ago I had poop foot. Be respectful of others and say no to sh#t foot.
dude the drop in trick helped me so much thank you :)
stOrYTimE: so ok i went to the skate park with my mom and dad they were sitting on a bench n stuff so some other skaters saw me struggling and helped me out and whenever i did a trick they clapped c:

Why somebody who is a beginner wouldn't actually want to look like a beginner is beyond me.....if you are a beginner, be happy about it. I am 41 yo and I am a beginner and I couldn't care less how I look on a skateboard, as long as I enjoy myself.
irmasil3 young people are more aggressive and judgmental to other kid/teens if your older, younger kids wouldn’t give the same experience because your your older
@@JoeMama-es2tg I used to be there (young that is) mate as well...lol! But beginners shouldn't "pretend" because others can be/are pricks. Just make them aware that they shouldn't be pricks....and that they used to be beginners at some point as well.
irmasil3 that sounds nice but that doesn’t stop people from doing it. It also doesn’t stop kids from feeling dumb in general. Kids are brutal and so are skaters. They’re asaholes.
52 and just started learning to longboard :-)
@Richard Weeds : When I was younger, I didn't blend in well. And I didn't care. Almost a half a century later, and they're still trying to blend in. I'm not. And I don't care. It's about just enjoying life. I woke up this morning. Everything after that is icing on the cupcake.
1:57 superior way of holding the board🔥
I have always loved skating, started out in the golden age in 75 when I was a kid, skated until 83, stopped, and picked it up in 88,89, but life got in the way and I haven't been on a board since. Now I am old but the love of skating hasn't left, so I am going to get back into it, of course, everything is going to be new to me, but I am going to dedicate serious time to this.
Rock on, man, I love your attitude. Once you fall in love with skating, it never goes away 🤙
The learning how to fall is important
I wish I saw this before I broke my wrist
9:06 imagine you go to a skatepark and practice this the entire time your there. I can already imagine everyone staying a good 100 ft. from you lol
Omg 😂 I never thought of that
Hahah I just started and I don’t think ill do that
I’m literally crying at that comment
i just broke my arm but it’s better than doing that
Just leave your board at home and show up all padded out and send hard for an hour or so rolling around the park an hour or so... bring a full face and really practice!
Tip: don’t listen to anyone if they make fun of you, just say you don’t care what they think of you. Always be yourself, that is the best thing you can do.
Great vid! Thanks for posting! I am 56 years old and just getting back into skating!
Omg, I thought I was the only Over 50 rolling back into skating! So great to see more of us popping up lately!
I love this guys lowkey casual humour nice vid
Thank you man!

Everybody’s gotta start somewhere 🤷🏽♂️ I’m 21 and I can barely land a kickflip but practice makes perfect
Knotty God i’m 21 as well and can barely land a kick flip.. it’s such a process that’ll pay off eventually
Tony Hawk is like 50+ and can do a 900 on a Vert Ramp still. Keep skating and you'll be good too.
@@sixbeebop how are your kick flips going?
Huge tip! Go to a skate park with a friend that skates! It’s really easy to piggy back off heir confidence and you can joke around with them and not be on your own.
You think I have friends that skate?
Four months into skateboarding now and I just want to say your videos ha helped me improve a lot. As a 26 year old it felt weird at first to be one the oldest in the park but the worst skater, but now now I am to addicted to care about that. Big thank you!
1 year and 5 months into skateboarding now and I am 43 now... I am literally almost always the oldest at the park. lol
Hell Yeah@@HarounCherif1975
Aw awsome
BizzBlomman there was litterally a 40yr old man at the skate park where I’m from that man took the drop on a new bowl that’s was made and damn was he good at it he made me feel like trash 😂
Alternatively get to the skatepark before midday . . . All the other 'skateboard punks' will be still in bed so you can mongo to your hearts content !
Yes! This is so true. That's actually when I did the filming for this video 😂😂
Love to mango my heart out while everyones asleep
Fuck em if it works for you do it
I skateboard mornings cuz noones ever there
When schools out i leave lmao
I’ve been skating for a while and my sister started recently, I decided I could take her to the skatepark. When we went she was scared of getting laughed at, but the kids there clapped for her, hyped her up and stuff like that. Now she’s much confident:)
I’ve been skating for a year

I think a very important thing to note is this: being a good skater isn’t about doing the craziest tricks, it’s about doing the tricks you can do, with much steez

Im in the UK and started skating yesterday. As soon as i went i was just vibing learning and decided to ask someone how to push off faster. I got laughed at by everyone there (im 16 and they were the ages of like 10-15) i just left lmao.
roadmen and chavs in the uk are assholes. at this point i don't even listen to what they say cause there just pathetic. i genuinely had a group of 12 year olds say i was too fat to skateboard without breaking the board. i'm legit 17 and they thought fat jokes would hurt me as if i'd never heard them before. just replies back by saying that if i was really too fat, why was my board still in one piece
I still struggle with picking the board up and putting it down with my hands and it definitely makes me feel like a noob lol
I just realized I never went to a skate park a day in my life lol. Almost 2 years of just street skating.

I will forever mall grab. Next time a security douche comes and snatches your board outta your hand, you'll wish you had a good grip on those trucks. Goofy for life.

That is a fucking beautiful comment

literally saved me beacause I've been riding my board wrong since I started (I was doing pushing mongo for the past 3-4 months) and now I learned how to skate that way with ease, but i'm not good with speed and tricks that way. So now that I figured out what I'm doing wrong I'm goig to have to break my habit, which is gonna be hard but worth it in the long run. Thank you, this video it helped a lot with basics and other things I haven't tried yet :]
