  • First off - big thanks to ‪@DigitalSpaceport‬ for his brilliant guide on how to setup this unit for plotting and farming under Windows.
    In this video I unbox my recent purchase. My attempt to scale up bigger with regards CHIA farming, with space and cost considerations in mind. The NetApp DS4246 looks a great unit and I am extremely pleased with the price I paid for my first unit.
    Hope the video has been enjoyable. If it has, please consider giving it a thumbs-up. Without these our channels have no way of getting noticed by the TH-cam algorithm and promoted.
    Also, please subscribe and hit the bell notification icon if you wan to be notified when i release future videos.
    Thanks
    Crypto Carlos

    They did a great job packaging that unit up! Lookin good man.

      They did indeed, which was good because the van driver dropped it onto the road! Looking forward to getting it up and running soon thanks to your great Windows tutorial.

    As you got only a IOM it should start and work with just one disk. But every time you add a new drive you must make a rescan of the entire SAS topology. And the Rescan is done at you Raid controller / HBA.

      That's great..thanks for the info. Going to be a while before this gets fired up as waiting for the introduction of the new plot formats. Thanks for watching.

    yes he is back! im very curious how much power wattage it uses!

    • @crypto-carlos
      @crypto-carlos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have not done a definitive test yet but have heard around 100 to 135 watts plus additional 5 watts per drive. Will put a meter on and start it to show actual when emoty soon.

      @@crypto-carlos thats definitly not bad at all! im still not sure what type of farmer im gonna make. still thinking of fulling my i7 4770 with 20-24 16tb disks. the power consumption is good on that pc.

      @@crypto-carlos slowly and steady my farm is groing. just bought a 12TB disk for 125 euro's that comes in the mail today. second hand disk with only 30k hours and 4 times turned on. came from someones security cam setup
      so that brings me (when its all full) at around 70tb so far on plots. and atm i have 45tb plots and plotting 1.6tb a day

      @@Ivanos Your farm will be bigger than mine soon. Need to start you own TH-cam channel! Might look for one more 16TB EXOS and I need around 5 HGST 10TB to complete my USB 3.0 setup.

    Greetings from Germany! Just thinking about buying this for my chia. Now I have a fractal design xl 7 just for the hdds, they are connected to a hp z440 as a farmer. Just doing madmax flexfarmer with c8 at about 260 TB ( ca 330 TB effective ). I‘m looking forward to your video because of the connection to the 4346 and which card you will use.
    Here in Germany I could get a 4346 without cable for about 225 as well. Still not sure if I should.

      Hi to you in Germany! We have lots of family in Hamburg! Good setup you have there, I hope to grow to something similar. I am thinking about a Z440 farmer at some point. You talk about a 4346 though - my unit is a 4246. Not sure whether the controllers will be the same and what HBA card would be needed for that unit. Have a look on Digital Spaceports channel - he may have a video there on that unit. Thanks for watching.

    You can use 1 powersupply if you use SATA drives.

    • @crypto-carlos
      @crypto-carlos  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is good to know. Question - Is that because SATA drives draw less power than their SAS counterparts? I want to put 18TB drives in and DigitalSpacePort used 18TB SAS I believe. I haven't got round to performing any tests against different drives yet, but hope to soon. Thanks for watching.

      @@crypto-carlos Yes indeed SAS needs more power. I've got two 4243 units loaded with 12 to 20 TB drives and they both run on one power supply. 70 watt at the wall per unit , about 3 watt overhead per drive, very efficient.

    • @crypto-carlos
      @crypto-carlos  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a 4246 not 4243. Could that unit be different in its requirements? I am surprised you get large disk support in the 4243. Good to know.

    What kind of power does a unit like that use without any HDD`s in it?

    Welcome to the world of SAS enclosures. You do not need to fill up to run. It will work with one drive but that would be a waste of power

      Thanks for the information. Definitely will wait until I have a considerable mount of drives before considering putting it into production.

      Thsnks for the info. Have seen Digital Spaceport put 18TB SATA drives in this unit. I am hoping my unit will accept the same.

    are you gonna put all your external hdd in this?

    • @crypto-carlos
      @crypto-carlos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. This is for additional hard drives, as big as it can take which i believe to be 18TB . Will probably plot uncompressed plots still as i don't have the hardware to farm compressed.

      Bladebit_cuda just came out with 128gb gpu compress plotting

    • @crypto-carlos
      @crypto-carlos  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have eagerly been awaiting Bladebit_cuda and 128GB support. From my investigations with the Beta it doesn't look like it will create C0 uncompressed plots? only a compressed version. I may be wrong. I would have to update my farmer to have a suitable GPU for completing the compressed plots. Seen talk of a Tesla P4 being suitable for this purpose but I don't have one. Wonder If my RX6600 would suffice?

    • @crypto-carlos
      @crypto-carlos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Lots of farmers are. I know Poor Investor has stated on a video that he is not re-plotting compressed.

      Heard of backplanes, not a clue about what you would need to run one. Had a squiz on EBay and prices seem to be between £15 and £200. Research needed to see what it would all be about. Thanks for watching.
