    My favorite 16 Bit Brawler is Super Double Dragon🐉🐉

    I love how you show what critics thought of games when they came out. I wish I still had my game magazine collection but they got lost in a move. I suspected foul play!

    I liked Battletoads Double Dragon a lot back in the day. But I had the NES version and I like that version better. Maybe is nostalgia talking. The SNES version looks ugly to me for some reason. But still is a lot of fun.
    My favorite 16 bit brawler? TMNT: Turtles in Time, no doubt.

      I think the problem is that it's hard to see the 16-bit versions as little more than an 8-bit game with slightly better graphics. Neither feel like they were made with 16-bit consoles in mind, so they don't look as good as 16-bit brawlers and don't have a lot of the bells and whistles you might expect with the Super NES and Genesis. I have the exact same problem with the Genesis version of Battletoads. I mean, I love the NES version of Battletoads, but I just can't get into the Genesis port. It's the same game, but the slightly better graphics are a constant reminder that this is really an 8-bit game at its heart.

    I remember playing Pac-Attack in the recent Pac-Man arcade for the first time. Sadly, it was bad.

    So, I looked through my SNES ROMs folder, and saw I had 3 of the the 4, including a Translation of the Dodge Ball game. Also saw I had both of the Cosmic Gang games and Pac Attack. Only one missing was Big Run. Well, Google search and quick download later, and I fixed that. 😉 As for the question, got to go with Turtles in Time, really liked that game.

    For the QotD, this is probably the most vanilla ice cream answer of all time, but yeah, it's Turtles in Time without a doubt. I actually never owned the game as a kid, I only rented it or played it at friends' houses, so needless to say, I was over the moon when the Cowabunga Collection came out a couple years ago

    Battletoads and Double Dragon is such a great surprise. I remember playing it on the NES with my family and Friends. Looking forward to playing the SNES version

      I played the Sega Genesis version. It is a solid game.

    I thought of a (possible) way to find old Magazine english reviews of Japanese only games, back in the day there uses to be "Otaku Specialty" Magazines from the 80s and 90s that would review animes and mangas, games not released in the west, they even sold imports, perhaps a more niche magazine like that would be what you're looking for

      For some of these Japanese games, the solution might actually be to rely more on French and German magazines from that era, who reviewed a lot more Japanese games for some reason. It's far easier translating French and German online than Japanese, and most of those magazines have scans online for me to archive. It's just a matter of adding more French and German magazines to my review archive. Currently, I'm adding hundreds of Game Informer issues and trying to get caught up on some of the lesser-known publications. I recently finished adding all of the Edge reviews up to 2010.

    I'd say my favorite 16 bit brawler is The King of Dragons. I loved Capcoms high fantasy era they had for a bit.

    QOTD: hands-down streets of rage 2! definitely a close second is turtles in time (or it's genesis counterpart, hyperstone heist)

    Battle toads and double dragon is definitely a mixed bag for me but only because it feels like a battle toads game that lightly featuring double dragon characters. Personally I've always preferred DD over BT in gameplay. As for what's my favorite 16 but brawler that's a difficult question because there's a ton of great ones but if I have to pick one then knights of the round

    Those who will play the SNES port of Battletoads & Double Dragon need to know that the game uses the same button-mapping as the NES version: "B" to attack and "A" to jump, with the other buttons having little to no function. Moving characters around also sometimes feels like they are on ice or that their feet are magnetized to the floor. The soundtrack to the SNES version is also missing music and visual content and dialog from the Sega Genesis. Nintendo probably removed the scenes where the characters and enemies were bruised because they probably thought that it looked too graphic.

    It’s cool Battletoads Double Dragon was picked, I think this is the first time that game has even been re-released. 😄

      On a modern console, for sure. Retro-Bit did re-release the game as a physical Super NES package back in 2022.

    Did they announce these games days ago? You were way too quick putting this video out. lol 😅
    My favorite 16-bit brawler is Stone Protectors.

      Yeah. They normally announce NSO games on Thursdays (leading to a Friday Review Crew show), but this week they SUPER INCONVENIENTLY announced them on Tuesday for some reason.

    Turtles in Time, baby. Quicker than Final Fight and Captain Commando and Alien vs Predator (I played it on emulation) and Super Double Dragon, and with more moves to boot than most of those other games I've played. WAY easier, yes, but also often more varied and faster paced. It really is a great game as far as belt scrollers go.
    As for these games I am SO curious as to what's going on behind the scenes when we have 31 days between NSO drops and when we do get news it's of a bunch of obscure SuFam games, mostly. Like even when we COULD have gotten Pac-Attack we inatead get the japanese original? Are Namco maybe planning some kind of Pac-Man themed collection and they don't want to give any of the planned titles away for free? Why haven't we gotten an N64 title as of late? So many mysteries, so few answers.

      @DefunctGames  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, we haven't had a new Nintendo 64 game since June. Seems like Nintendo is prioritizing the Game Boy Advance when it comes to Expansion Pack releases. And don't even get me started on the Genesis. It has been something like 14 months since we got a Genesis drop.

    Hyper calling Double Dragon and Battletoads average 😂 Now I know why they were gone way before the others. They sound like an IGN review

    • @DefunctGames
      @DefunctGames  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      What's frustrating about the Super Play and Hyper reviews is that it sounds more like they are reviewing the genre more than the game. They complain that all you do is walk around and punch, which is true of most games in that genre. But not Battletoads & Double Dragon. That game has you racing on speeder bikes, shooting at giant spaceships, zip-lining down big vertical sections and more. There's way more variety in this game compared to the average brawler.

      @@DefunctGames Exactly! I’m not sure they even played it….
      IGN does that sometimes too. I read a review from them that literally started with the critic stating: “I don’t like this genre and hate this series…”
      It was like: Oh this is going to be a fair review 😂

    man those last reviews on battle toads and double dragon were wack, to the curb, they got to go.. but no it is clear those reviewers have no interest in beat em ups and really did not get what was so great about this team up. And calling the game boring is so bias I never understood why game journalists review games they don't like or get why they are allowed to make clear bais reviews based on personal opinion rather then objectively (I hope i used the right one i always get objective and subjective mixed up) looking at a games . I mean how hard is it to keep an open mind a title you may not like. Example take breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom, I personally really hate those two games and don't think they are fitting of the zelda and think they are the worst titles in the series. But i would not write that in a review as a game do I think they are bad games? No, I see the merit in them and get why so many people like them and as games but also get way just as many fans don't, anyway point being those last reviews of battle toads and double dragon hold no water
    Qotd: lol as hard as I went to bat for battle toads and double dragon you would think i would put that and my answer but honestly it's shin nekketsu koha kunio-tachi no banka

      This reminds me of that time Polygon previewed Rock Band 4. They sent something who told us right from the start that he had no interest in the series or rhythm games in general, and his report was 90% about how he hung out with friends, had a few drinks and socialized. Almost nothing was said about the game, because he couldn't care less. And sure, that wasn't a review, but it's also not what people are looking for when they click on a Rock Band 4 preview. People want to know how the game differs from the previous entries, what the new songs are, if the interface is intuitive, if it looked like a next-generation game on the new hardware, what the campaign looked like, how the scoreboard was implemented into the rest of the game, and so on so forth. That's what people want out of a preview. Not the story of somebody drinking and talking to friends about how much they hate music games. Save that for a Twitter post, not a game preview.
