Gotta be honest it really sounds like the boyfriend drugged her. He didn't call an ambulance that didn't come, give me a break. The forty dollar complaint sounds like a way to guilt trip, gaslight and make the lie convincing--honestly I'm not convinced he got a cab at all. Something very fishy there.

Ahh, I'd really love for Sam to realize that abuse isn't just physical, and to have a little more tact when discussing it. He tends to say things like "as long as they're not beating them..." which 1. can be jarring for those of us who have been through physical abuse (I have actually been branded by my former abuser and didn't expect to be reminded of that on a generally lighthearted podcast) and 2. really makes it sound like he only thinks abuse is legitimate if it causes physical harm.
Emotional abuse is *incredibly* traumatic, and pretty much all physical abuse starts as emotional abuse. You really shouldn't assume that as long as a parent/partner isn't doing the most extreme physical thing you can imagine, that they're not doing serious harm. It's okay to be uneducated about abuse, but if you're going to talk about it, please at least acknowledge that you don't understand it.

1st story ESH- the step mom should have been the adult and moved past it for the girls quinceanera but the mom also shouldn’t have been talking smack. Also the dad should have sided with his daughter. I believe as a parent your child is above all else and you need to do what’s best for them. Honestly even if the girl said lol I feel she’s blameless in this situation. She’s 15 navigating what’s clearly a difficult situation where both parents are not being cooperative. I’ve been there and honestly from my experience she might have just been brushing off moms comments by agreeing so she wouldn’t have to talk about it anymore. It’s unfortunate such a big milestone in her life was ruined because not a single adult could be cooperative. They just needed to shut up and attend, all of them, yet not a single one of them could do that

The stepmom likely would've gotten harassed by the biomom and her family, if y'all are really so invested in the "nuance" then you should've caught onto that considering it's a nobrainer, i mean the only things we hear about the biomom doing is talk crap about the stepmom. I honestly can't blame the stepmom for not going and she even told the dad that he could still go and stuff, im not saying stepmom is an angel but what else was she supposed to do? take the same flack from biomom and her fam right there in the middle of the party? c'mon

I'm surprised no one is talking about the privacy violation of reading her texts between her and her mom. They gave a vague reason that they read them, but unless they thought her safety was in question (which I think would've been mentioned, if they thought her mom was an unsafe person), that's unacceptable.

I’m probably gonna give an unpopular opinion BUT: with the the last AITA-- I don’t think the parents are wrong.
I disagree with you guys. In life, there isn’t always a “redemption path” sometimes you just HAVE to eat it. And deal with it. You have to go through the fact that there is nothing you can do about it.
She bullied someone to the point that they had to leave school. That means this was happening for MONTHS. And this personals mental health and safety was at risk. I don’t think she should be allowed to go to homecoming or prom. And she should be steered in the direction of community service and education because if she sees that “oh yeah I did something bad but I can get out of it and not deal with it by doing _____” she’ll never learn. She’ll always think there is a loophole in life and there isn’t one. Sometimes, there’s only consequences.
Deleting social media was a bit of a stretch. But prom and homecoming. Yea I agree

    • @lllamalamoa5072
      @lllamalamoa5072 ปีที่แล้ว +29

I guess the only risk there is that without the redemption path, bitterness and resentment will grow which might feed into her mentality. Resentment over "woke" parents "cancelling" her and perceiving that this girl ruined her life driving her into right wing racist circles.

    • @enough2715
      @enough2715 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Prom and homecoming are once in a lifetime (small ones and not that important but yes once in a life time). What pictures on social media could she possibly have that are so important she just CAN'T delete them? I agree tho, she shouldn't be allowed at those events, who would even want her there anyways?

It's pretty unforgivable that the father didn't even talk to his daughter, let alone skipped her birthday and uninvited half her family. The mom sucks but the kid is 15. 14 at the time of the texts. How can he ever justify blowing her off like that? OP isn't the AH but she's going to regret her decision I think.

Plus, the tone for the messages could’ve easily been misread as the daughter being like “aha… uh.. yeah” instead of just agreeing with them

To the mortgage one, OP can tell him “if you have a problem with it, you can find a new place” because OP is right. He is getting an affordable place, with full utilities. He isn’t paying for utilities according to the story, OP is. So of course the room mate will pay most of the mortgage- and it’s cheaper than most places you get for rent. So they’re pretty much mad for no reason.

    • @KiraBKADestroyerOfWorlds

If the rent he's paying is less than what he'd pay somewhere else for a comparable space, then it doesn't matter if it's the WHOLE mortgage payment, all the utilities, *and* OP's car note--he's getting a deal. So, what, if OP's house were paid for, would that mean he couldn't charge rent at all? Gimme a break.

Idk. The story about the drugged girl is suspicious. How did she get drugged in the first place if she was with her boyfriend? Also, why would he leave a taxi if she was really passed out and he was originally planning on taking her to the hospital? Why not try another taxi? Also, what nighttime taxi driver charges that much for vomit? A broke one. Feels more likely that he did the drugging, hopped in the taxi to save face in front of their friends, got out of the taxi in a “reasonable” timeframe and finally gave that lame a** story to the police and her to try and cover it up.

First story: Where they going through the daughters phone in the first story? Violation number one. And based off what we know of the mother, I don’t blame her for maybe going along with it if it was going to save her from a big argument and constant problem at home.
And for the landlord story: did the person renting the place not look into details of who rents it out LOL?? I feel like that would’ve been one of the things oc checked before renting😂
Cheap boyfriend story: GIRL DROP HIM!! He could’ve asked someone to drive them home the next day! Or asked for a loan from a friend to get a taxi! Or CARRY HER! And the Ambulance said they weren’t coming????? WHAT???
Final story: no, not the asshole and prom and home coming would both be off the table. That girl would not be doing the “community services” for the right reason, she would be doing that to be able to go to prom and not because she was truly sorry!! The daughter knows what she did was wrong, she’s old enough to be going to Homecoming and Prom, she knew what she did was awful. But didn’t care. My kid would be going to therapy and taking racial sensitivity classes as well
. I do like the idea of not telling the daughter that she could earn it back without knowing she’s earning it back though!

I think action should most definitely have consequences. It’s also a lesson in entitlement, you don’t get to earn back prom when that girl never even had a chance. You lost your privileges and now you go to therapy and will be giving back instead of dancing around and brushing off the issue, because in the end, the real world might not be so forgiving. I’m sorry, we’re also aware that teens are manipulative. They’ll play along but talk shit with their friends at prom, like we all knew friends like that at that age lol
Her life also needs to be changed drastically, because even with all those things taken away, it’s nothing compared to what you did to that girl…at all. Tying in the lesson with therapy will also balance out the understanding she also needs to want to change, and not because she’ll get to go to prom, it will be for the wrong reasons.

I think overall just to take away things like social media/prom etc might not be the best way to learn a lesson. It should not be about what you get out of behaving in certain ways but about the consequences of her actions i.e. changing someones life for the worse and scarring them for life.
It's the guilt of what she did and how dissapointed her parents are that could really make a deeper change. Have discussions of what lead her to bullying in the first place so she can work on herself. While I appreciate the parents taking this seriously I think these "punishments" might be a way to avoid the feeling of not raising their daughter right and their own guilt. There are no quick fixes, you'll have to have these hard conversations with your child and actively parent them in a better direction.

Parents were not too harsh. Me personally my kid would be staying off somewhere temporarily until she could figure out not to be a racist bully.
Kids are literally fucking killing themselves every single day because of bullying. Everyday a child takes their own life because other children made them hate their own self that much. If they don’t attempt or commit suicide, then they definitely grow up with those scars embedded in their little brains. Their entire personality and life experiences will be altered because of it. That shit never leaves some people. Years of therapy and even meds for these people to get over that trauma.
Parents should not be doubting themselves and if my in laws or own parents were under MY roof making me doubt my choices that reflect my daughters future and soul, then they can get the fuck out too.
Hard lesson she had to learn. But the baby who went through that torture is missing out on so much too, from the hands of her bullies.
So no, I don’t think it was too harsh. If anything, it was not enough. She would be there every fucking weekend doing all of their yard work, washing their cars and folding their laundry.
Also, my kid would be in extensive therapy alone and as a family….because somewhere, somehow I failed and missed signs. That entire family needs an intervention. I’m not shaming them, I’m happy they’re choosing those punishments. But the kid clearly needs help too if she’s treating another child that fucking evil.
I was bullied my entire fucking childhood. I refuse to raise one.

You must not have been in a situation as a teenager where you can't just defend someone against your mother. She wouldn't have had a quince at all. You really saying that the child should have to go defend an adult against another adult and that's weird

All I’m saying is the girl can literally voice that she’s uncomfortable with something said it’s not that big of a deal. Perhaps they should have made her move schools, too. Sure you can go to Homecoming and Prom but you'll need to make a new friend group and experience some of the challenges she put that other girl through. I also love the idea of her having to learn about the culture and race she bullied the girl about. Deleting all social media was a great call, she can save her pictures from the platform. I would also ban all of the other girls that were part of the bullying from being part of my daughter's life.

I understand the remain saying and being livid when you found out if you were genuinely friends or if you had a shared living space... Like I remember this girl at my old church bought a condo and wanted to rent out the second bedroom because she kept talking about how her mortgage is difficult and she doesn't make a ton of money actually... I was always really nice to her so she thought maybe I would want to rent and be her roommate. But you'd also make comments like, "Oh it would be so nice to have a roommate again so someone can remind me to clean," and I genuinely felt like she would not be a good roommate at all. So of course I wasn't interested in her being my landlord and also us having to share almost every space together except the bedrooms. She was transparent and flat out admitted that my rent would cover her entire mortgage each month, and I was (partially) transparent with her that it was in a part of town I had no interest in living

Being a landlord is inherently a toxic relationship. The "haver" of housing (wealth) is withholding a thing which is a basic human necessity. Think of it this way: if a person is hungry and you have food to spare and you charge that person you're taking advantage of them for your own gain. Both of my example and the story are widely considered socially acceptable acts only because we live in a sick capitalist society where we have to have money to survive. Many of us have to justify withholding goods, services, and in the case of the story, housing, from one another in order to maintain our standard of living. The OP isn't an intentional asshole, but he is betraying his class by choosing to be a landlord when it's really a matter of convenience for him.

The 1st story the DAD and Stepmom read msgs between her mom and her you decided to NOT go to her party so her dad CHOSE the new wife over the daughter….also WHY were they reading THOSE msgs? You don’t need to read msgs between her and her mom. For ANY reason unless there a safety concern……NOW you take out your hate for Sharon…..out on the daughter rather then being an adult and talking to her. Now when the daughter always sides with her mom they will always wonder why….🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️ cause now she’s not talking to them and they acting like it’s an Oops
