    Enjoyed watching, thanks. Back in 1980 I worked at a truck dealership as an apprentice mechanic. Our job was to assemble trucks that came in crates from the factory and it was only two of us, me and the mechanic. Handled some really big, heavy parts, but with a crane, jacks we were fine. Once a truck developed a brake problem that the mechanics could not resolve. I put my head to it and told him it would be a faulty new valve, which it turned out to be.

    There’s a good spring shop not too far from me so when I come across jobs like this one I usually just take the spring packs in and have em re-arched with one new leaf to keep the pack where it should be. Always with new U bolts & nuts. Bushings too, most times.
    Great fix. Another one back in service!

    First thing I thought of was "Centerpin" which brings to mind where I found common sense before it was too late. I had a butterfly hood Pete when I come up on a guy trying to imitate a short logger with a half ton pick up truck and had pulled the bed off and just stacked accordingly short logs than ran a myriad of length's and the truck had more than I would attempt on say a ton and a half or two ton truck. He was a struggling with his load headed to a pulp mill and you could see him working the steering wheel back an forth... so I decided to just back off instead of going around which cars were honking their horns and one fool tried to pass but I blocked him and I could tell he was burning a gasket./LOL. I had about better part of seventy feet between us when the thing decided to come apart and crap went everywhere.... I busted out laughing...probably shouldn't of but it was funny and then the road was plugged up and no harm, no fowl to me... he slept at the county lock up and we went on our way once we cleaned up the road enough. He was poor and loaded that truck by himself but he got greedy instead of needy. I thought long and hard about that for a long time, I knew I wasn't that stupid but it bothered me so I looked up his family and took em some food and clothes for her kids cause we had kids growing out of everything she needed plus I think the wife threw in some stuff for her. They needed help and we done the right thing by them... I never laughed about someones bad luck after that

    I May be overkill but in our shop I would have replaced the spring packs on both sides along with all u bolts ,but we have single axle leaf sprung dump trucks with 30k rear axles. That juice brake under CDL truck truck doesn’t take nearly the weight and roads our trucks do. I get why you kept it simple , our springs always break right where the locating leaf meets the main stack .....we usually get 5- 8 yrs out a set of springs at the most

    Some new car bumpers come wrapped in plastic sheeting, it’s great for working on top of in gravel. Honda and Ford are best. If you know anyone at a body shop they can hook you up.

    Not seen springs like that in Europe for 20 years

    • @scythelord
      @scythelord 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure that's a good thing. Leaf springs are a simple, yet extremely robust design that are still being used on new cars. Volvo XC90 uses a modified transverse leaf spring design. Leaf springs are especially warranted in design of heavy vehicles due to the way they spread out the forces of bumps and the weight of the vehicle over a larger surface of the structure of said vehicle, rather than how coil springs concentrate those same forces into a small area, needing reinforcement.

    • @j.c.smithprojects

      we did this repair and then test drove the truck to be sure it was fixed. the truck sat awhile because of the shifted axle. no need to fix the brakes until it is ready to be used because the rotors will rust again from sitting if not put into service and used regularly.

I always wonder when you see stuff like that, how some folks never checked to see how things are maintenance wise.....cause no way if a driver were doing daily checks or even weekly you'd miss it....Nice work on the fix...but boy thats a bit of work to get it there but way to get er done JC

      they took the truck out of service because of this but the tire wear suggests there were a good bit of miles put on it before they realized what was going on. it dog tracked horrible. it was very odd backing up also. it didnt "react" like it should have when turning the wheel. its fixed now.

    Edit: and by hell I mean taking it back to the dealer 3 times before going to a local private shop and getting it done right.

    It looks like someone had a habit of overloading that truck then all it took was a bump on a kerb to snap the locating pin and knock the axle out of line...

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the truck is 14 years old. i figure age, rust and fatique along with a driver hitting a good sized curb way too fast was the culprit on this one.

  • @larrybe2900
    @larrybe2900 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is that a weakness of the metal or an impact of some sort?

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would think they age, fatigue combined with hitting something would have caused the pin/bolt to break and allow the axle to shift.
