    I drove an old '65 Loadstar many years ago. Loved that truck! Sweetest running gas V-8 ever! Never failed to start even on the coldest mornings.

    My dad's trucking company in Chicago had these brand new in the 60s, wow, do I remember riding in these as new trucks, thx for channel!!

    My uncle had a Loadstar of that vintage. I always thought it was a great looking cab. Tuned in to the project!

    It's the coldest day of the year! Mrs.JC is not amused! It didn't take you very long to get cab off ,I'm glad someone is doing something with that truck!

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      she wanted nothing to do with working on that because of the cold. took 1 1/2 hours to get the cab off...might have been quicker but the steering shaft was rusted solid and wouldnt slide off the gear box...i had to cut it...blue tip wrench to the rescue! well that was step one! next step will be to get a chassis under it. i have been looking and measuring over and over...the medium or heavy axles are going to make it very hard to get it to set as low as i want it...we will see how it goes.

      it was pretty easy...it took longer to get the shop cleared out and to get it inside than it did to remove it. i am figuring out which frame to use next. i wish you had a build video series for your rat rod truck...i have seen all the ones of it after it was done.

    I know it had to be cold but you made short work of it. When you opened the door the wind was blowing papers around in shop behind forklift. Mrs J.C.done a great job to steering it with it so cold no easy task either.

      it was cold but we got it done. the wind can be pretty fierce being that we live off a lake. she wanted nothing to do with working on that truck today.

    Oh man I hate working in the cold! I also don't have insulation in my shop and I've got a hole in the roof so even if I run a heater, it all just goes out the top! Looks like you're making progress tho! Good work! Thanks for the video! Can't wait to see the finished project!

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no insulation is my own fault...i had plans to do it and just never did....maybe next year! the reality is i dont like how the building was built and it pains me to put any money into it when i really just want to build another shop the right way!

    Great video thanks my friend. I like when you have the equipment to get the job done. I like the cab style. Keep up the great work see you in the next video. I'm from Ohio to getting tired of the cold and it's just starting.

      @j.c.smithprojects  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      where in ohio are you? the gradall makes all the difference. the things i do would be much harder without that....not that i couldnt do it but it would be much harder. i whine like a sissy about the cold weather until i go out and work in it. then i get over it but it sure does feel good to sit in the recliner next to the wood stove!

    • @scottpearsontoolsmore185
      @scottpearsontoolsmore185 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @j.c.smithprojects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i think it is suppose to hold those temps here for awhile. it is ok...i will work a little...go in and sit by the wood stove for awhile and do it again. if it gets too cold i will just work on editing some more videos!

    That sure is a nice cab for it's age. Looks really straight. I don't think that it will (at least on my popularity list) beat the old '65 International DCO205H that I drove while in Europe for the 37th Transportation Group. I was just glad not to have to operate that old M-52 with that humoungus Contenental gas engine in it. My dad and I bought a '52 Kennworth off a logger threw in a couple of Transmissions and a PTO set up mounted to yet another box so we had multiple speed winches and sent the whole thing, Cammel Back suspension and all out to Holmes where They mounted a beautiful brand new, still making payments on it, Holmes. Kinda made dad mad. He figured if he and I could build the truck, why we couldn't mount the wrecker body. But that's the way you had to do back then or they wouldn't sell you one. I have no idea how much it weighed, the thing had a triple frame under all the way to the rear spring hangers on the front axle and dad had plated it in some places also. We did quite a bit of mountain recovery so dad set it up with a set of outriggers from an old Army M-62. No hydraulics, just grunt and pull power. Just the same, it was heavy enough and dad had five winches on her so I don't remember anything we went after we didn't come home with. Thank the Lord for "Holmes Trees" and all that extra cable he used to roll up inside a 10:00X20 tire and just let it roll over the side.
    Oh yes, sorry got to reminiscing, that new "rat rod" truck reminds me of those days The Army had billions of them .They mounted stake and platform bodies on them and loaded them up. When switched from over the Autobahn to working as a recovery truck operator I hauled oddles of them in to the shop for repairs or go out to the training sites to winch them out of whatever situation that they were in.
    Tanks for all the videos, say "Hi" to you partner or better half for all us guys out here. When she cracks the whip, we learn a lot.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      that sounds like one serious recovery truck! in those days it was more about helping people and doing the best job you could. today it seems companies have put "avoiding liability" first then profit and if your luck there may be some customer care in there. great story. love hearing this from any of the older generation when i come across them. could you imagine what that truck would cost today? this rat rod truck will be a working truck. if i cant use it then there is no sense in having it!

  • @timamyett
    @timamyett 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Gradall must be Cummins powered to start like that in cold weather.
    I'm sure there is a better way to remove a cab, with the tools you have, but I don't know what in the world it would be.

  • @woychck4
    @woychck4 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When you can get yourself a free standing fire place and burn some of the wood you get in the shop. We have it here and it works good on those 20/30 days to get the shop warmed up.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes one of these days i might have the shop all insulated, good doors and some good heat...until then i will just grin and bear it!

  • @ervingoertzen7233
    @ervingoertzen7233 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah this is just some crazy cold definitely not the norm. I was noticing in your shop you have no insulation. Just sayin , that tube heater would be better if you tossed some insulation on the walls and ceiling . I know it all takes time .

    Putting the Cab & Vintage sleeper on a sub frame with wheel/axle arch will be really impressive when tilted. If you can work out the steering linkage and geometry. the old guy Bert

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i am thinking the geometry should work out. i really like the idea of the whole cab tilting but i am worried about the length of the front clip, cab and sleeper...it is likely going to be over 13 ft . in order toget it high enough to work on it, the lift angle will be extremely sharp. i will keep working on it!

    • @MrScoresby
      @MrScoresby 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But the awesomeness of all 13' tilted just fore peer appreciation.

    • @j.c.smithprojects

      very true my friend....when people ask why i decided too tilt the front clip, cab and sleeper....all i can say is "why not?"

    J.C after I watched your video bringing the 65 home l ran across a cold start video of old beater trucks and they had one looked like it could be a twin ,but it had a big tank on the back maybe it was used as a water buffalo . He might have parts?

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i have seen quite a few videos about these trucks. i didnt see any that anyone showed a "build". i will keep my eyes open for body parts during the whole project...you just never know when something will fall in your lap!
