  • Chainsaw milling lumber - Milling a big Danish oak tree with my Stihl MS661. I use a Arbortech 48" LoPro bar and Stihl 3614-63 PMX ripping chain. I'm not very experienced in how to mill lumber with a chainsaw but it went pretty well.
Saw is mounted on a 48" Panther Mill, capable of cutting 103 cm. Widest cut on this oak was 101 cm.
The lumber will be air dried for 2-3 years, then kiln dried and finally made for plank tables.

I just got the same saw and a Granberg mill. How does that chain/bar combo work? Where did you get it??

      Hi Johnny
The chain and bar combination is really good. I bought everything, except the saw, at chainsawbars.co.uk
Rob (the owner) is really great if you need support with products.

Do you use a 3/8" LP (low profile) drive rim on the MS661 or just the standard one that came with the saw?

    • @thelakesidecraftsman9297

      I use the 3/8 LP.

@@thelakesidecraftsman9297 Thanks. I suppose you got it from chainsawbars with the kit. The rim seems to be a very exotic part with only a few suppliers (in Europe at least). There is not much information about it and if it's really needed to have the low pro rim and some sensible explanation about why. Happy milling to you :-).

Yes, it's from chainsawbars. It's definitely wise to use the LP rim when using a LP chain, otherwise the match isn't perfect and your equipment will wear out way faster.
Happy milling to you also :-)

    My 661 can only use a max 42" bar . I take it you have a a 404 gear on the 661.

I have a 48" 3/8 LoPro Arbortech bar on. Rim sprocket is also 3/8 LoPro. It works really good.

c dawg - I'm from Denmark, but I got my gear from Chainsawbars.co.uk
If you are ripping slabs, you should consider buying the Granberg 12v grinder. I'm really glad I did, when these long chains get dull, you save a lot of time with that tool and it will also help you to grind the teeth evenly.
