When I watch this video over and over again, I see Michael having fun with what he is doing with the saxophone, just like everyone else who is on stage at that moment! It's priceless!
A few months before Steve Smith and Mike Stern came in. I saw a kind of pickup version of Steps Ahead many years later in Montreal, with Mainieri and Brecker and Jeff Watts on drums. One thing that was obvious was how much they loved playing this material.
Now this is one concert that I really would have liked to have attended. Thanks so much to TH-cam, I can at least enjoy the second best thing - a video recording. By the way, I just marvelled at Michael Brecker when he transitioned from playing the EWI solo version of "In A Sentimental Mood" to "Trains". Just imagine having to play those too pieces back to back live!!!
If another take of the live recording at the Pit Inn Roppongi, Tokyo in 1981 is discovered, it will be called the discovery of the century. There will be no other "Tee Bag" performance with Steve Gadd at that time.
Best Erskine concert with his Grey Yamaha drums and simmons/linn drums , was there...amazing. The Steps Midi version;) This was at the Tuinpaviljoen at the Nsj...best sounding hall/tent ever, you hear all the bands like Shorter and Miles performing at there best because the sound and acoustic was magic, all wooden stage:) The Radio broadcast has much better sound!
@1:01:00 I cant believe how solemn the crowd is... altho I've read that europeans enjoy their music in this manner, i tend to think that, as humans, at least a small few in a large crowd are bound to break out in dance upon experiencing great music... simply as a natural, if not primal, reaction. Even if 'customs' says otherwise. I remain surprised at the calmness bc i'd be goin off! What a set!

Great music and memories. WOJ needed to use professional videographers. It looks like a high school production. Chuck is burning a solo and the camera is fixated on Michael not playing. Weird.
The sound is all over the place in this. The drums and sax are the loudest. I can hear the bass just fine though and I'm having a 70 dollar Bluetooth speaker

Michael Brecker is my favorit sax performer of all time. RIP
He was the best saxophonist of his generation and he played with the best of fusion giants, Steps Ahead, Pat Metheny, Uzeb and many others.

I've been listening to Steps Ahead since 1983 and have only heard them live once, in Wigan (UK) in 1999 with Bob Mintzer and Eliane Elias.
That would have been Bob Berg on Tenor sax not Mintzer.

Erskine wasn't just a fill-in; he played with Steps Ahead for years after Steve Gadd did not want to stay with "Steps" after a brief Asian tour.
