Thanks for the nerd ASMR while I work on my model car. Love your videos bud. My girlfriend uses them to help her fall asleep. Thats not an insult she says your voice is one of the few things that relax her enough to sleep.
I repair vintage hardware like Amigas and ANY time you see that blackened trace, you need to remove the overcoat. I usually sand down to copper. Good work as usual mate!
Thank you, clear and perfect for the resurrection of uncared gems, im just started to repair my gb from 7 yrs ago, your channel is a big help, thank you❤️
That vinegar "caballito" though (Here in Mexico we call those little glasses "caballitos", which roughly translates to "little horse"). Great video as well, I've learned so much watching your videos! Keep up the good work mate.
Glad I found your channel. I like that people still fix things even tho we live in an era where everything is made to be thrown out and replaced. hopefully retro gaming systems will still be around in 50+ years. I'm holding onto my atari 2600 and all the games for as long as I can.
@@RetroRepairs thanks for coming back brother! Thrilled to see you upload again. We've definitely missed the ASMR and educational videos. Can't wait for the rest of this Gameboy repair. It looks to be in mint condition visually.
Thank you for the information. My old Gameboy has gone silent and I imagine this is the issue as I had left batteries in the back that eroded over the course of a year or two. 😅 I'll have to bust out the soldering gear and give it a good old college try! 🤘
dude sweet . it worked . i didnt desolder any thing but cleaned out that little switch the best i could . and boom got sound. i bought this broken gameboy of ebay . it had broken screen and no sound. i got it to attempt to put the funnyplaying screen in it. i didnt want to mess up my gameboy that works lol. thank you verry much. we got the sound finally working.
Heh, this reminds me of when I refurbed a Game Boy Color and had to replace the speaker with a GBA one I had kicking around. Love digging into these old Game Boys!
Tank you for explaining everything you do and for showing everything without speeding it up. That really makes it easier to understand and memorize. Really informative and enjoyable videos!
OH YEAH BUDDY.... I'm only 13 minutes in but I had to stop and comment. Recently I got some soldering stuff giving to me from an estate sale where a fellow past away and in the box was a de-soldering gun. I had no clue what it was or how it worked ( Just got it a few days ago so haven't gotten around to google yet ) but now seeing you use yours, I'm totally excited to use it and will keep it. I was going to sell it all but I did take some electronics stuff in school in the early 80's so I'm pretty much okay to tackle the sound problem I have with my gameboy because it's doing the exact same thing... Sound only with headphones. Okay now back to the show..
I would have just dumped the board itself in vinegar and after that dumped it in some ipa. I also repaired a water damaged pc motherboard by spraying the slightly corroded cpu socket with some vinegar
If you've got a replacement speaker, then yes it's a real easy fix. but if you don't have a replacement part, the headphone can be repaired without replacement. Based on the battery leak, I felt confident that the headphone jack was the problem.
I was not able to remove the headphone jack and ended completely destroying a sound board. I smeared the whole thing in flux, and while desoldering i tried to pry away those little metal endings. Nope, nothing, didn't even bulge. Need to learn :))
I have a question: if the jack is faulty after the cleanup, does this mean that the speaker won't work, even though the jack was cleaned and resoldered?
i bought one of my gameboy on ebay and speaker is busted like yours when i plug my earphone jack in it works with sound but when unplug it and turn up volume sound doesnt work can you fix it
would it be worth getting one of those cheap ultra sonic cleaners for stuff like that just to be sure with parts that you cant really open all the way i fixed my dmg the same way before but after about a year or 2 it got stuck again and im forced to use headphones to get the switch "unstuck" again
Hello. I have a small question: Is there any possibility to repair horizontal lines on an DMG. I have one and i would like to keep the original display on that. And if so, can you show a method of doing that? That would be so awesome. Best regards from Germany, Stan
Yes, it's possible but much more difficult. There is a ribbon connector behind the screen that handles the horizontal lines, but you need to desolder the display to access it. I haven't come across one yet
@@RetroRepairs Thank you for your answer. Is there a possibility, that the contacts has the same problem as the contacts for the vertical lines. I mean that you need to reheat on top of the display? I think they are not that easy to reheat, because the plastic will melt away. The ribbon-cable for the vertical lines can withstand some heat, but the right side of the display can't. Am i right?
What burn? If referring to when I was talking about holding the braid too close, I didn't burn myself, just a warning. You can definitely feel it heating up when the iron is touching it.
@@Darlypants Just went back and re-watched. I'm guessing you're talking about when the gun slipped off the pin? it may have hit my thumb, but that part of my left thumb is callousy from years of golfing, so I don't even feel it.
Happy to see you making content again

I've heard that many times!
I think the troubleshooting part of these videos is my favourite. You teach us what to look for and what it might mean.

DeoXit is a must to clean contacts It's expensive, so don't use it to clean flux residues, just my 2 cents.
Yeah, using it for cleaning flux seems a bit extravagant.
just love watching your videos

I enjoy your videos. A little soldering iron rub on that screens cable fixes that screen easy peasy.
Yep, it's a fairly straightforward job, that's going to be part 2.
Blu Tack is great as a third hand soldering

Hakko rhymes with taco.
Isn't it easier to check/fix the speaker first? Or is there a way to see whether it is the headphonejack vs speaker that is defective?

battery corrosion is the worst...

DeOxit costs about 5 times as much as IPA though.
"little overkill but that's alright" ya until you see what Deoxit D5 cost lol.
Great instructional video
Who think about Adrian digital basement when he put a good amount of Deoxit ?!

Love your vids! You should wear gloves when using the fiberglass pen. The little strands of fiberglass can get into your skin and be quite irritating.

Retro repairs doesn't drink but does rust and battery corrosion for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
There's really nothing that wakes you up in the morning like a shot of vinegar and battery leakage.
