  • My new Gameboy Color has a faulty speaker. So let's see if we can figure out why and fix it up
    The iFixIt Mako screwdriver I use - www.ifixit.com/Store/Tools/Ma...
    Handheld Legend and the respective parts pages - handheldlegend.com/
    handheldlegend.com/collection... (Use the 0.5W 23mm option)

    Thank you so much for making this video! I haven’t been able to hear my game boy in about a decade and now it sounds brand new!

    If you are getting a faint sound from speaker most common problem would be the volume wheel. Clean it out with IPA using a qtip. It has fixed the issue for me most of the time. If that doesn’t fix your next step would be to replace the volume wheel completely.

      Isopropyl Alcohol. I try to use 99% but 75% is more common at the shops (pretty much any shop that sells medical supplys) and will work just fine.@@kaylajabirbouabid8909

    My GBC has low volume. I recapped it, checked and cleaned the headphone jack, checked and cleaned the volume wheel, and replaced the speaker. It still has low sound except from the headphone jack. It works fine. Any idea what I should do next?

    I’ve installed 2 backlit lcd screens in two GBCs and both now have a whine when I dim the screen and both have a heavy whine when I try to use the headphone jack. Wonder if the screen’s drawing too much power and affects the way the audio plays?

    My GBC's sound worked fine, but the speaker was extremely dirty. So I cleaned it and now the sound is so weak that you can barely hear it. Any ideas on what could be the cause? I was very careful when I cleaned it. :/

      Been a while since I cracked one of these open. My initial thought is a bad speaker. The film that vibrates can wear out over time and these are approaching like 20-25 years old, so it isn't out of the question.
      Two things things that come to mind: A capacitor on the audio has started to leak or go bad. Or the headphone jack is having issues (dirty, loose ground) and the circuit isn't fully opening for the speaker to get sound.
      I wound try 1 first, then 3, then 2. In order of trying things.

      @@MattPassarelli Thank you for your advice. I found out that probably a bit of IPA got inside the speaker while cleaning. I let it dry for a while and the sound is now working again. But it still seems to be a little too quiet compared to my other game boys (that's what I noticed before cleaning already). Bought a replacement speaker and hopefully everything will be alright afterwards. :)

      @@MattPassarelli thank you! I just noticed that whenever i plug in a headphone into the jack, there would still be a faint sound coming from the built in speaker. Im thinking of changing the capacitor but i cant find the right voltage.. the lowest voltages i've found were 10v and 16v.. will that still work with a gbc? :3

    I can't get sound from headphones or the speaker? What could the problem be?

    • @MattPassarelli
      @MattPassarelli  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd be willing to bet a capacitor has gone bad. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the one plainly visible at 3:43 would be the culprit. But look up that possibility and see if that's what some people have said
