Fun fact about the left hand/reverse thread: It originated from welding apparatus. Inert or non-flammable gas cylinders (like Oxygen, Argon) use the conventional Right-Handed screw threads, but flammable gases (Acetylene, Propane, Butane etc.) use Left-Handed screw threads. Just a precautionary measure to ensure that fuel gas cylinders are not interchanged with the non-flammable gas cylinders.
I have had one of these units for 2 years..and Im STILL amazed how FAST it boils water and cooks!! we feed a family of 7 just as fast as if we were at home in our kitchen! Thanks for reviewing this, Everyone that sees ours used is amazed!
Hi Tony, are you able to cook on low enough heat to cook sausages through without burning the sides? Others have complained that is has no "low" setting. Please let us know. Thanks!
Being from Texas, I couldn't help but think of a towed trailer unit when Ronny said he brought a BBQ cooker with him on trails. Funny the nuances in culture, even with the same language.
if you want to simmer with this cooker use two pieces of half inch steel bar across the burner plate and set your pan on. That little bit of distance from the flame is all you need and it stays pretty stable. Has worked for me every time. Great review. Oh yeah...use re-bar as it does not roll off of the burner plate.
Hey Ronny, great review, helped our decision to buy one not long ago. As to the issue with controlling heat/simmering, we solved that for us buy purchasing a simmer mat to use with one of the burners. Allows better heat control (even cooked a nice batch of pancakes) to allow low simmering/heat control once the heat has been turned down as low as you can practically go. I reckon Coleman should include one with every unit, would give this much better reviews. Thanks.
I have the "National Parks" version here in Colorado. The resistance to wind is no joke. It's quite impressive. Great BTU output. I generally use this unit for cooking with larger groups of people. If it's just me, my Jetboil and/or a smaller Coleman (Propane or white gas) come with. If you're cooking for a family, this paired with a BBQ would be perfect in my opinion. Thanks for the review, Ronny! Camping season has started (Memorial Day weekend coming up) and you got me excited to get out with the FZJ80!
Any other Americans here old enough to remember the gasoline fired Coleman stove this one is based off of? If not, it was the same concept as this one but boxier. And, it had a small gasoline tank that you attached to the front that you pressurized with a pump. It had the ability to add excitement to your camping trip in the form of flaming gasoline spewing about.
I have one of the gasoline versions ,purchased approx. 20 years ago. Never had any spewing fires thank goodness. It was 2 burner but not as wide which is not so good. As Ronny points out the width is critical for 2 pot cooking. The other benefit being you can get the gasoline everywhere. cheers,Guy
Yup. In my quest to convert my primary cook stove and lantern from LP to gasoline/white gas, I went a bit over board. Not in money, hell no! In quantity. For some reason I've had so much fun using the old Coleman gas stove(s) I now have 4 of them. Three are used and from the 50's, 70's and 80's. The fourth one is a true dual fuel from 1994, and never taken out of the cardboard box yet. I purchased this fourth one with a matching used 1994 dual fuel lantern for $60 from the lady that purchased both back in 1994. I have a Toyota Tacoma (gas) and already carry a 5gal jerry can with unleaded in it, so it just made more sense to ditch the LP tank(s) and go with a stove and lantern that can run off my extra unleaded I already pack.
Chris Thompson Hey mate, I've got one of these in the shed, a big 3 burner, they were sold here in Australia too. I haven't used it in over 10 years coz i run a diesel now and the advantage of matching fuels was lost.
I think my dad gave it away a few years ago. The issue was where the nozzle from the tank was inserted into the tubing that fed the burners. It would heat up and start to leak a jet of flaming fuel back towards the front of the stove.
Hey Ronny take the valves out and clean them with silicon spray they need to be cleaned as they have a crappy grease on them from the factory once you clean them you will get an ultra low flame mate you will be surprised at how low and easy you will be able to get the flame
That would be really sweet for us here in the Caribbean. On the beaches here winds get up quite a bit, something that won't go out would definitely be useful. Thanks for sharing this Ronny.
Spot on with the review . I brought one 5 weeks ago for our 4 week camping trip . Took it to Tassie and all through the Victorian High Country. The Size I did not mined , we did use both burners a lot at same time. Is disappointing you can not simmer your food. You should have done a review on the hot plate you can attach to it , packs up nicely inside it . Bloody heavy though once you have it all ... CHEERS!!!
Great review as always Ronnie. I brought one for my discovery 2 overlander and I've fitted it into the kitchen on the rear door. Great bit of kit , but for some reason here in the U.K. No high pressure hose with it. I've had to order one from the states. It won't run on the standard propane regulator we have over here.
Yeah I got the bbq plate top with it, I use that but it still is hard to simmer. It can be done though by just turning the burner on and off as required
Don Manson, thanks, how does turning it off and on actually help get it to put out low heat? I'm thinking of buying one but it sounds like the low heat setting on this unit is a big issue.
Hey Ronny, more negatives: 1. very thirsty on the gas! you don't get more than a few small cooks out of those coleman bottles 2. the low setting on mine makes a "flapping" noise which appears to from inconsistent flow of gas as it kind if re-ignites. For the price tag (rrp 279) i would ecpect better still a good unit though. i was lucky enough to pick one up for 130 brand new in the box
I've had luck putting silicone o ring grease on the burner adjustment to help fine tune the flame. You take the knob off, get the little valve stem out and clean up the o rings, and then put a tiny bit of silicone, then put it back together and it works much better.
brandon young Thanks mate!! I did that too and instead of the knob always springing back some, it just stays put to whatever flame I set. So much better. Next thing I'm going to do is try putting a large washer over the centre part of the burner, to block those holes such that when it is turned right down to simmer, the flame doesn't flash & stutter due to too low gas supply. If just the outer rings of holes are lit, I think it will simmer perfectly.
The fix for the simmer issue is to remove the knob, unscrew the nut then unscrew the valve all the way out, clean all the Chinese grease off and presto you have simmer!
xjinit so dose this work I even asked the camping store about how this was to hot can not turn it down and they said yes that's correct no good if you won't to turn it down.
Had mine just on 12 months now and the only problem I have is as you said. You cannot have a low heat for simmering. I find the size, although large, ideal for me as I solo camp and can put 2 large pot/pan on it.
Simmering is not a problem if you do the following easy fix: Disconnect gas, remove knobs, locknuts, use knob again to unwind, loosen stem to take it out. Wipe out factory grease and apply silicon spray. You put them all together back and you will be able to simmer as low as you want. These instructions are in videos in TH-cam.
Only 3 years late but if you screw out the control valve spindles, clean and lubricate the ‘o’ rings with propane friendly graphite grease you get full heat control - try it, very easy to do!
Good review! I looked at getting this for our last trip & opted to take our webber, love the webber but it takes up a load of room in the back. I like the one torben has with the grill plate & will most likey get that after tax time as it still has a smaller footprint than the webber.
great cooker, bought the same one 12 months ago...only con for me which ronny mention was about there isn't a ultra low setting, i so easy to over cook/ burn your food :( but besides that def a great cooker would recommend for sure
@@paulraymond1804 that works, also the cooker can be modified to have a more adjustable flame and low heat option. th-cam.com/video/vREI5oG6RyM/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=UncleFjester
Cool, thanks Ronnie, I've been waiting for this video since you mentioned it in your easy camp breakfast videos! Helped a lot, cheers! One thing I wanted to ask is, you mentioned you needed an adapter for the lpg bottle to connect earlier in the year, and when I connect my hose up that I got in the box, I get no gas flow and it doesn't seem to connect properly to the cooker connection. I can't work it out. Cheers and keep up the good work as usual!!
Ive got this cooker too. Best investment you can make i reckon. it is a bit hard to get cold enough but if you use a cast iron oan that helps. but my god if you want something hot fast. its fantastic. ive always got the rest of camp coming up to pinch it because they can't cook their snags fast enough xD
Thanks for your experience James. But don't you prefer to cook snags on low heat? How do you not burn the sides while cooking them through, if on high heat?
I'm sorry to say this i have one of these camp stoves they are useless in the Victorian High Country more so above the snow line where it dose get very windy the cooker needs to be covered once It's covered it works well.
If you put the gas bottle on the ground it saves room on the table! The optional cast iron grill plate is also great, it can be packed inside the stove and saves the need to bring a seperate BBQ. The major problem with this stove is that it doesn't have a low simmer option. This greatly limits the versatility and usefulness of the stove. Its basically an oversized JetBoil. Maybe a simmer setting wouldn't work in high wind but its not always windy!
hey ronny . i did see you guys useing this in a few videos and when i needed to get a new burner this is what i got works great on the beach in the wind . would like to know what the colman hot plate is like on them tho . thanks
Hi Ronny we have one and love it for it's quick cooking and wind resistance and even though husband still keeps burning food as he is still not realising the heat generated by the burners. We have not had ours as long and one thing we have noticed is that the gas knobs/controls no longer are at 12 o'clock when the gas is turned off. Did that occur with the unit you have?
If the low flame is still abit to hot for simmering things maybe using a pan or pot with a thicker than normal bottom might help? I don't know just a thought
hello ronny thanks a lot for sharing your experience and tips with us I saw all your videos we really appreciate it. can you please make review about after market seats like recaro orgomed or orthopaed there is no video on TH-cam about this subject. as you know it's very important upgrade to overland cars to arrive fresh and sit with correct posture
I'm interested in buying one of these stoves but I'm trying to find a compact table to use it with and was curious if I could use a plastic table like LIFETIME or do I have to buy a aluminum one
Ronny, How's your dad's Jeep doing?- Miss him in the videos. Was the engine seizure caused by oil starvation, I don't recall you mentioning what caused the problem.
7 years ago you reviewed this stove, one day ago you shoved a microphone in my face and ask me "what's the first thing you do when you get to camp" while I have one of these stoves on my shoulder, I think that's gone full circle right? P.S I stand by my answer of have a piss.
You seem to be not critical on it. Other cons, starter red knob is extremely dodgy, half the time it works and half time it doesnt. And the position of that knob, you need a bit of force to press and its hard to press with one hand and you might push the stove over. And when its used, the button is a bit too hot to handle. If you spill into the stove, there dont seem to be any simple way to get into it to clean it up. The black knobs are crappy, they just push in and drops out, for 200 bucks, i expect more. Same with the main closure catch.
They suck even after doing the O ring lubricating mod the low temp control is not great, and when using with the Coleman cast iron cook top you get two hot spots directly above the burners. They're only good for boiling water and cold temperatures other than that Id much rather my Dune double cooker with the alloy cook top that takes the fly spray canisters, its lighter and has better heat control only down fall its just no good in cold conditions. I should have bought the Coleman triton instead.
After sales service sucks. Anything goes wrong you will wait till camping season is over before they correct the problem. I've been waiting one and a half months for a refund for a returned brand new stove I sent back because they refused to cancel an online order the day after ordering it cause it came on sale next day. They could have simply refunded the difference or canceled the order. Now they don't give you back your money without a big hassel. Get a different brand that has after sales service
Roughly how long (cooking time) do u get out of the disposable bottles? Having the disposable bottle hanging off the edge of the table by itself, is that likely to damage the the unit?
Here's a video that shows how to take the valves out and clean them so it will reliably turn down to a low temp. th-cam.com/video/vREI5oG6RyM/w-d-xo.html
I guess I missed the wind. Instead of merely saying it's good in the wind show us some video. If you want to impress, cook a decent meal on that stove in a stiff wind without additional wind guards. I doubt if you can do it. Looks like a $200+ version of the old coleman 2 burner. Unimpressed. Sorry.
TOO BIG!! single burner would be better. I've changed from this style to tiny hiking stoves x 2 (360 degree brand around $30 AUS) - with hiking aluminium foldable wind shield, can choose the size of the isobutane/propane fuel canisters depending on the trip, down to 100g size if a weekend trip. They punch out some serious heat if needed too. So small you can just leave in your car in case you feel the need to make a fresh coffee anytime.
I found this stove shit Ronny. Runs way too hot. To cook snags it needs heavy cast iron. That negates the portable usefulness. The lowest setting con should be pushed more home.
Uou don’t need to make us watch you measure the stove. All the specs are on the internet. Also the larger gas bottle doesn’t need to be on the table like a 1-lb bottle. I know. Rocket science !
What an 'awkward' looking arrangement. They could easily have put a little more thought into this and made it a very good product all round. But, I suppose that people wouldn't have been as interested in the next model .. would they ... and that's what it's ALL about .. constantly trying to flog you the new model.

Yep and still is no option for one
I haven't used this cooker , but I have found Coleman products are top class and they honour their warranties and are great for spares if needed
dude! put the cooker on the right side of the table and sit the gas bottle on the ground... makes for more "preparation room"

Quick fix solution
Great review as always Ronnie. I brought one for my discovery 2 overlander and I've fitted it into the kitchen on the rear door. Great bit of kit , but for some reason here in the U.K. No high pressure hose with it. I've had to order one from the states. It won't run on the standard propane regulator we have over here.
You should try cooking with a wok on that stove seeing as it has lots of room. Gives you more cooking flexibility.
Great stuff Ronny. I'm still doing the winter repair stuff to fix what broke over the cold winter but can't wait to go camping this summer.
That's pretty much my Coleman cooker...same thing, different cover. Really efficient to use even with both burners running.
If you could only take one cooker would it be the Weber Q or Coleman Fyreknight? Why? Thanks
I have a family of six and have this exact cooker, it's great.
simmering is possible by turning it off and on.
Try putting something over the burner between the pot and the burner. Just a thin piece of steel sheet metal. Like a lid from an aluminum can.
Yeah I got the bbq plate top with it, I use that but it still is hard to simmer. It can be done though by just turning the burner on and off as required

still a good unit though. i was lucky enough to pick one up for 130 brand new in the box
Thx for the review as was nearly going to buy this but no low setting is a deal breaker. Who wants burnt food? Agreed a single burner would be better.
Non flammable (inert) gases are normal threaded. Flammable are reverse threaded. At least that's how all welding equipment is...
Great review.
Great review. The wind is my nemesis - I'd also be interested in a single burner model.
Hey Ronnie. Can you do a review on hot water on demand units.

Where do you get that small tank?
whoa!!! you got mission tortillas in australia?!
Hey Ronny from Coffs Harbour. Can you do an episode of modified on a Nissan Pathfinder. Thanks
Why not just make a fitting that fits straight from the bottle's hose to the stove........do I have to think of everything : )
I think it's because you need a gas regulator between the bottle and the stove
Camp Chef makes one for their Mountaineer aluminum stove. The regulator is moved to the bottle end.
Dude! What's with those boots!?
Get a Coleman stove stand. They take up almost no space when folded up and free up all that space on your table.
ciao ronny oggetto utile contento e robusto pratico ciao ronny
I prefer my Camp Chef !
5:06 That's what she said ( whomp whomp )
You seem to be not critical on it. Other cons, starter red knob is extremely dodgy, half the time it works and half time it doesnt. And the position of that knob, you need a bit of force to press and its hard to press with one hand and you might push the stove over. And when its used, the button is a bit too hot to handle.
If you spill into the stove, there dont seem to be any simple way to get into it to clean it up. The black knobs are crappy, they just push in and drops out, for 200 bucks, i expect more. Same with the main closure catch.
hey mate you have to do a collaboration with all4adventure
A lot of people and now doing the TH-cam hack to get the lower simmer on these cookers
How can you bypass that horrible bent pipe regulator with a more compact fitting?
They suck even after doing the O ring lubricating mod the low temp control is not great, and when using with the Coleman cast iron cook top you get two hot spots directly above the burners. They're only good for boiling water and cold temperatures other than that Id much rather my Dune double cooker with the alloy cook top that takes the fly spray canisters, its lighter and has better heat control only down fall its just no good in cold conditions. I should have bought the Coleman triton instead.
I have one and I hate it!!! It burns everything I cook in it. The food will burn in the center of the pan. It gets too hot in center.
I modded mine haha. Let's just say it doesn't take up 850 mm in length lol
"It's quite a big unit..." That's what she said.
Coleman Eventemp = 28,000 btu, Fyreknight = 24,000 btu
Coleman Eventemp = 3 burner, Fyreknight = 2 burner
Coleman Eventemp = griddle hot plate, Fyreknight = none
Coleman Eventemp = side panels, Fyreknight = none.
Coleman Eventemp = carry bag, Fyreknight = none.
Coleman Eventemp = 4.5hrs low/1.1hrs high, Fyreknight = 5 hrs low/1 hr high
Coleman Eventemp = 8.2kg, Fyreknight = 7.1kg
Coleman Eventemp = $235.00 (inc. carry case) Fyreknight = $180.00
Coleman Eventemp = 6 Fyreknight = 2
After sales service sucks. Anything goes wrong you will wait till camping season is over before they correct the problem. I've been waiting one and a half months for a refund for a returned brand new stove I sent back because they refused to cancel an online order the day after ordering it cause it came on sale next day. They could have simply refunded the difference or canceled the order. Now they don't give you back your money without a big hassel. Get a different brand that has after sales service
Roughly how long (cooking time) do u get out of the disposable bottles?
Having the disposable bottle hanging off the edge of the table by itself, is that likely to damage the the unit?
I can get a couple weekends of cooking lunch and dinner on a regular 1lb bottle.
can someone make that "wind technology" and sell it for $40 on eBay so i can adapt it to my $20 Primus cooker ?
Here's a video that shows how to take the valves out and clean them so it will reliably turn down to a low temp. th-cam.com/video/vREI5oG6RyM/w-d-xo.html
Isnt brian your old man?
yep
Why don't show me
I guess I missed the wind.
Clean the jet out with silicone spray and you'll have it simmering perfectly
Uou don’t need to make us watch you measure the stove. All the specs are on the internet. Also the larger gas bottle doesn’t need to be on the table like a 1-lb bottle. I know. Rocket science !
Yeah, ya pay for what you get....... but it won't simmer!!
and the latch is shitty.
What an 'awkward' looking arrangement.
They could easily have put a little more thought into this and made it a very good product all round.
But, I suppose that people wouldn't have been as interested in the next model .. would they ... and that's what it's ALL about .. constantly trying to flog you the new model.
Wow a company gives you a test product and it takes you 2 years to feel comfortable to review it. Never again.
It takes time to see how well it goes and holds up
Metric !!!.. are you on drugs ?? ;-)
