    If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change the way you think about it.
    This was the quote I put in my high school year book. Still 100% my mantra to this day!

    One of the other applicants was telling this story about being asked an absurdly specific interview question about a unique type of bee and how the demise of this species would affect the global ecosystem. Little did the interviewer know, this applicant's undergrad roommate was a beekeeper. Apparently, the attending's jaw dropped when he crushed the answer.

    I love the message of having the power to interpret things

    • @enochbrown8178
      @enochbrown8178 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds good, but the reality is that we are most often incapable of interpreting things when under assault - verbal or otherwise. We most often only know how the assault "feels"...and it's never good. I can remember malign verbal behavior that happened to me as a little boy as if they happened yesterday complete with context and ambience. Why? Because the "assault" was THAT vicious. As adults, we are just grown children emotionally and while contextualizing or interpreting things can help to some extent, it is an exercise in futility for most of the human race...all that's left in victims is bitterness and emotional turmoil. Having said that, I have worked (as an anesthesiologist) with surgeons who were and are decent human beings who "lost it" at times. For those surgeons/physicians, I have always given them the benefit of the doubt. However, there are some whose modus operandi is to be as punishing as human limits allow and we have all experienced these kinds of individuals. These are the types that we need to somehow reign in as much as the law and legal processes allow.

    Interesting way of perceiving situations that would be seen as stressful to another individual. It's great to have a positive outlook, it helps others see the same way. I am a pre med student at the moment, I have a long road ahead of me. Perhaps one day I can also share my experiences with others whether good or bad. Great video!

    The utmost importance with an education is the effect you choose to influence the way one speaks and writes. I put detail attention to the usage, fluency, and level of your words then the message behind each of your videos. Your writing as expected follows that discipline.

    I remember getting humiliated at my first internal medicine rotation when after the history and examinations I missed the diagnosis by a mile and was pimped infront of the unaware patient who was having suspected lung carcinoma but that was also when I learnt the most in that rotations. Right now I'm happy to be pimped but I hope I have this attitude till I need it .

    PIMP is an acronym for "Put me In My Place". Commonly heard preceding a clinical grade dropping from "Honors" to "High Pass" from my own experience. Attendings tend to be exquisitely accurate at knowing the answers to the questions they ask.

    I like your attitude and willingness to roll with the punches so to speak. It occurred to me that the question about fish with high mercury levels was a bigger picture/thinking outside the box concept that might prove very useful for you or one of the people who you presented to in a niche setting.
    I live in Northern California and have visited several lakes known to be near sites of mercury runoff leftover from mining operations. It always amazes me to see people out fishing. I sincerely hope they don't eat the ones they catch.

    This encounter sounds benign. There are a lot worse things that happen in medicine; truly hateful, malicious, and malignant behavior. There is a story recounted by Dr. Buck Parker, M.D. (general surgeon) on TH-cam of a CT surgeon who screamed at him (during residency) because he missed connecting two hash marks on a sternotomy by about 1 mm. It was obviously not called for and abusive. Although this kind of behavior is unusual, many incidents like these on a continual basis wears on a person's soul.

    In the instance that you thought it was funny (the fish presentation), you said that not all people would interpret that jokingly. Isn't that an indication of them (that person) not having thick enough skin or unwillingness to take a joke, and is a reflection on them rather than the problems in the system of medicine? You seem to be at the forefront of this issue and have a good idea of where the line should be drawn (as you mentioned in the video) having experienced it so recently yourself.

    • @kevinjubbalmd
      @kevinjubbalmd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agreed. It’s a fine line between and I think too frequently people are easily offended and fragile, which takes credibility away from legitimate issues

    • @enochbrown8178
      @enochbrown8178 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not all people have "thick skin." So, you are saying that all people should be born with thick skin, that medium or thin skin is not allowed in medicine, that it indicates "weakness?" And that weak people have no place in medicine? How about if I take the opposite position and say that people should be treated respectfully since not treating them this way can cause permanent psychological damage and even suicide, because it is obvious from physician suicides that this is a true statement. How about telling physicians that their decision to be decent human beings may actually save a life? How's about that, Samuel Smith "Med"? Also, if I called you a "man-whore" (if you were, in fact, a womanizer), you'd probably laugh it off. But, if I called, say, your sister - who happens to be a virgin and an otherwise normal person - a "whore," you'd probably beat the shit out of me (as you should). Whereas, I could come back and say, "Boy, this guy is thin-skinned!"

    I don't think the presentation was meant to be a joke. I do think your attending really wanted to know what fish had the highest levels of mercury. I imagine he hinted that the fish should be edible and consumed commonly here in the US, or at least in certain cultures.
