    The all-new Toyota RAV4 Prime is a plug-in compact utility with 302hp and will make a run to 100km/h in just 6 seconds. The Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid can run on pure electric mode for 68km, then reverts to the already efficient Toyota RAV4 hybrid system. The total range on gas and electric is 979km or 2.5Le/100km. The RAV4 Prime an also tow 2500 lbs. The starting price in the Canadian market for the RAV4 Prime is $44,990, which means it qualifies for the full $5000 electric rebate, plus an additional $8500 in Quebec and $1500 in BC. The Province of Quebec will get the RAV4 Prime on 2020, followed by BC, then the rest of Canada. 85% will be delivered in the calendar year 2021. This Toyota RAV4 Prime is a stepping stone for Toyota with a goal of a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, EV or fuel cell in every product range by 2025, only 4 model years away. This will help Toyota achieve 40% electrified sales by 2025. The RAV4 Prime comes standard with heated front and rear sets, heated steering wheel, also available ventilated front seats. The base infotainment system on the Toyota RAV4 Prime is 8-inches but 9-inches on all other trims. For the first time a panoramic moonroof is available in Canada on the top RAV4 Prime. The interior volume of the RAV4 Prime is the same as the hybrid, thanks to the battery running along the floor. The RAV4 Prime compact utility can charge in 2.5 hours on a 240V outlet or 12 hours on 120V.

      It is super practical for many buyers, only downside is brutal price. Hybrid model better value at $10,000 less after $5000 government rebate for comparable model. You'll never make that money back in fuel savings, let alone increased battery replacement cost on Proms model.

      I was hyped, but they are really struggling to bring it to market. It looks like it will be almost impossible to actually acquire one. I have been leasing cars from Toyota for nearly 2 decades, however I think my current car which is the Prius Prime PHEV will be my last one. I got the taste of this plug in capability and I want way more than Toyota can offer.

    This is possibly your best review ever! I live in the province of Quebec, and effectively the top plug in model comes out 4,000 dollars cheaper than the regular limited hybrid at about $46,000, after the $13,000 rebate. Effectively people started ordering in 2019 (like the Subaru Crosstrek plug in). Many have leased the Prius prime plug in, in the meantime while waiting. In other good news, you can enjoy your poutine with Montreal smoked meat , while your car charges in a large and expanding charge station network all over the province. Great review-:)

These products are incredible and a joy to use every day. I've driven 3600kms so far and still have more than half of my original 27L tank of gas (pressurized fuel tank stops it from going bad). On the other hand, here in Edmonton I can drive to the mountains, etc whenever I feel like it without ever worrying about charging, or anything other than 30 seconds at a gas station. Fantastic!

      Doesn't make sense cost-wise owning Prime over hybrid model over 10 years as you'll never make your money back on increased cost (outside Quebec).
      Example (XSE hybrid vs XSE Prime): Prime costs $56,800 including freight, delivery, gst. Subtract $5000 federal rebate = $51,800. $10,000 MORE then XSE gas model. Factor in fuel savings over 10 years and you still don't make that money back. Then factor in added replacement cost of much bigger PHEV battery and you're even more behind. Lastly, as for handling (as per Alex on Autos) Prime model handles slightly worse then hybrid model due to added weight. 👎

      @@James-il3tq Totally don't agree. Did you listen to the video? The price even in the rest of Canada is lower than the top two Rav4 hybrids. Even base to base there can't be much difference! If you are not commuting too far, the gas motor will seldom run. How could that not be worth the difference right there???

    • @James-il3tq
      @James-il3tq 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kevin6550694 2020 RAV4 hybrid in Canada costs $32,350 + freight/pdi and taxes (on Toyota.ca). RAV4 Prime base model $44,990 + freight/pdi and taxes (my local dealer emailed me prices). Base model Prime $12,550 more then base model, $7550 after $5000 federal rebate. People won't make up that cost in fuel/energy savings over lifespan on the vehicle, not to mention extra cost of much larger battery when eventually needing replacement.

    About the rebate thing, I don't understand what the complaint is about. The whole point of the rebate is to promote clean vehicules, so if people are going more and more for EVs, then the government program is working as intended. "Who will go for the classic Rav4?" no one, thats the whole point!!! and it's for the best.

    The thing your forgetting about the rebates is that you still have to pay taxes on the full price of the car, the rebate applies after tax. When I first heard about the rebates I was like wow, this sounds pretty good. Then I read into it and found out you have to pay taxes on the full price of the car. It still is somewhat attractive incentive, but it definitely not as much. We got new rebates on PEI and we get $2500 provincial on the prime and $5000 on pure electric vehicles. The nice thing about PEI's rebates is that it also applies when you buy a used vehicles.

    Working at a Toyota dealership in BC, we have no idea when it'll even arrive. We had to stop taking deposits at one point because the ETA became almost a year. Don't even get started on the hybrid, which is still hard to get. I'm still not a huge fan of it, particularly the regular RAV4 which feels extremely cheap inside, but the Prime will be a good car.
    The rebates are honestly stupid and Toyota's strange decision to not plan for the demand is them shooting themselves in the foot. Who knows, maybe Honda or another company might make a competitor to this by the time Toyota sorts things out.

    Well rebates for Canada are like tax incentives for the U.S. Hey, lets not complain about adding incentives to buy all electric or plug in hybrid vehicles. I applaud Toyota for trying to push the market into buying more electric vehicles. I understand the demand greatly outweighs the supply right now, but it will even out once the car market recovers from all things pandemic related.

    Any sites that show how much electricity it takes to charge the battery to full? Does that cost come in cheaper than just having a regular hybrid ?

    • @DigitalSteel
      @DigitalSteel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Electric motors are shockingly efficient, no contest. For example, the energy density needed to drive around 300 miles in a Tesla uses roughly the same amount of energy in about 2 gallons of gas. That being said, electricity is pretty expensive compared to gasoline. So here is a bit of a breakdown: On average, most all electric vehicles get between 3 and 4 miles per KWh. Plug in hybrids are generally a bit worse than this due to having to cart around the dead weight of the engine and other parts needed to make gas cars go, so it is likely closer to 2.5-2.7 ish miles per KWh. Even with that extra inefficiency, if the Rav4 Prime gets about 40 miles of electric range, you can expect the battery to need about 18 KWh to charge. Where I live, electricity is pretty expensive compared to average, so with that absolute worst case you are likely looking at around $3.00 to drive those 40 miles all electric.
      Of course there are other things to consider, such as significantly less wear and tear on the engine. Electric motors can easily run for a million miles no problem, and they do not care if you are in stop and go traffic or on the highway. Honestly dumping the gas parts entirely and even spending a bit more up front or something like a Tesla Model Y would get a car that is basically a guarantee to outlast any other car by 3x. Electric cars also have almost no maintenance costs, no oil, no transmission, and only about 7 moving parts in the motor. To top it off, 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds. In my eyes, that is really the way to go. Toyota has a good idea on their hands for people who don't yet fully grasp the capability of all electric cars, but they are really struggling with bringing even something with this small of a range to market. They simply do not have the manufacturing capacity to handle the battery demands. Tesla is easily 10 years ahead of the game.

      David Esposito thank you for the lengthy reply I appreciate it. I’m in an unfortunate part of the world where there is about a 4.5 hour drive to the next city and it gets down to -40 degrees in the winters so a Tesla doesn’t quite cut it, yet. Something like a plug in hybrid for everyday use seems perfect until battery tech gets more capable at really cold temperatures.

    I bought a new 2018 RAV4 Hybrid XLE. Went to the dealer and he takes me down a row of 50 RAV4s and in the middle of the pack was this one RAV4 Hybrid. That was it and bought it. Here is my question. Why is Toyota making RAV4s as gas only, hybrids and now Prime? Why not just do away with the regular gas only and go 100 percent to hybrids and Prime. They could devote one RAV4 factory to the hybrid and one to the Prime. My Hybrid came from Japan so they ship all over the world. I bet if they did away with the gas only RAV4 they could bring the price down on the hybrid. The only reason why they are not doing this is maybe they can't produce enough hybrid batteries.

    So, the SE actually DOES come with red accent stitching on the dash, and the same on their fabric seats. The website only specifies "soft tec seating with red accent stitching" on the XSE trim. • @Maddog-nb9vu
    @Maddog-nb9vu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Outside Quebec and BC it doesn't make any financial sense to get the prime over the hybrid. I recently bought the hybrid limited and the top end prime would cost about 10K more even with the 5K fed rebate. With my km per year it would take about 8 years for the fuel savings to meet the cost difference. That is not even factoring in the cost of electricity to charge the vehicle which for me in Ontario has highest rates in the country. If you live in Quebec it's an no brainer. BC maybe. Anywhere else no unless you really, really, really want one.

    If they're going to engage in central planning then they could at least hire some economists who understand the worst pitfalls of it. I don't like the government doing this stuff at all, but there are ways you could do it that would far more elegant and less destructive to the market. I guess we're past the point of bureaucrats worrying about doing more damage then good? The funny thing is Canadians already get a screaming deal on new cars compared to Americans when you look at the exchange rate vs. the MSRP. That is one thing I can't wrap my mind around, the margins on new cars must be pretty decent because otherwise I feel like manufacturers might actually be losing money on a lot of sales paid in Canadian pesos. It seems like the RAV4 Prime is a premium vehicle that only homeowners can buy since you need a 240V outlet, so basically these rebates are subsidizing new vehicle purchases for the upper middle class. Personally I'm quite worried for Japanese car manufacturers because the central bank of Japan has been buying a lot of ETFs and Shares in the Nikkei to prop up the economy. So I worry the government ends up as majority shareholder in some of these companies at some point. By November they'll have about 40 trillion Yen in ETFs (~$375 Billion USD) meaning they would own over 7% of the total market cap of the Nikkei, making them the largest holder right over Japanese Government TSE pension fund at 6%. If the central bank just arbitrarily expands the money supply and then uses that money to buy shares, they may as well just drop the whole dog and pony show and just show up at corporate HQ with soldiers announcing they're "seizing the means of production". Emperor Hirohito would be proud.
