10 reasons I got the prime over the nx:
    1. More fuel efficient
    2. Roomier interior
    3. Quicker from 0-60
    4. Better pricing
    5. Has spare tire
    6. Rugged/sportier look
    7. More storage space
    8. Uses regular gas
    9. Physical buttons on screen
    10. More economical to operate

@@videogazer801e 2022 Nx 450 owners manual I'm looking at right now recommends minimum 91 octane at the risk of loss in performance and fuel economy, the 2023 RAV4 sitting outside my living room window recommends 87 or higher, as is pretty standard with every Lexus I've ever driven they ONLY recommend premium gas which is probably why the same exact engine code in the Lexus is rated at 182hp and the Toyota is 174hp, same A25A, different tunes.

The Rav4 should be more roomier. Not as fancier in the interior but less room. Especially in the cargo area. The volume in the cargo area is significantly different

  • @patricksoon85

The Lexus 450h+ is more expensive, has higher maintenance costs, uses premium gas, has less EV range, is less efficient, has slower 0-60 acceleration, has less interior cabin room, has less clearance, and lacks a spare tire compared to the RAV4Prime. Those are pretty big differences. The rest of it comes down to looks, the door latches, and infotainment. There are some who say the Lexus is quieter too (but it's probably not by much).

Hi David, thanks for all your coverage from Japan! Somehow I missed this particular video. Would you consider comparing the new RX 450h+ to the RAV4 Prime? Aren't those two closer size-wise? Thanks very much! Also, can you comment on the electronic door handles regarding if you get in a crash and emergency services need to get inside but you're not conscious? Can the exterior door handle be physically pulled (vs just touched) to open the door? Is it "jaws of life" if the door is locked and no one inside can unlock the doors? Thanks David for the in depth review. First let me start with I have a 92 LS 400 with 65 k on her. It is in mint condition even the engine bay is clean. I don't abuse the car it is garaged and driven very little. I lost a 5 cent screw on the remote and I can say Lexus Corp could have told me to take a hike the car is 30 years old way out of warranty, but to my shock Lexus Corp and the Dealer Lexus OF Queens fixed the issue at no cost to me. Now that is service on both ends. I am not going to go into the details because I might break some law by stating what Lexus Corp did for me but it was more than replacing a screw. I have had Toyota , Acura and no companies in my experience has come close to this customer service experience. This is not a paid advertisement just my experience as a Customer. Lexus Customer Service is outstanding.
I think I have learn a valuable lesson over the years, it is pay now or pay later. In my option Lexus is worth the extra Money. The Quality is the best. Japan builds great cars. To me I agree with you the Lexus has a better look.
How is Toyota making out with the Sold State batteries? I heard they are testing them in the Toyota's before installing them into the Lexus. I guess they feel if there are issues Lexus customers should not be part of that.

I have not looked at the NX, but on the surface, there are 3 things I don't like compared to the RAV4 Prime. Two that you mentioned, the price and the slightly less EV range, and my third would be lack of physical spare tire. My understanding is that the NX does not have or even offer a spare tire but only an inflation kit. No spare may not be a problem around town, but I don't like the idea of no spare when travelling distance.

Lexus representative said that it's to reduce the weight of the vehicle . Rav4 Prime weights 2508Kg and NX 450h+ already weights 2540Kg. Lexus did not want to increase more weight by adding a spare tire, pano roof and Mark Levinson premium audio to reduce more range. (It's their explanation)
They have already added so much weight to do noise insulation.

I've been in love with the design of the Rav4 Prime since I first saw it. The ONLY reason why I didn't try to get one was due to the lack of interior color options. I wanted a Rav4 Prime in a white exterior with nutmeg interior color combination but the Prime only comes with a black interior. I told myself that I would never own another vehicle with a black interior. A black interior is like a sauna in the summer and an ice cave in the winter. I hope Toyota rectifies that in the next iteration of the Rav4 Prime.

I have deposits on the Rav4 Prime (summer 2021), Rav4 Hybrid (spring 2022), and NX350h (spring 2022). The NX is about $10k more than the top of the line Rav4. I think the NX features, interior refinement, warranty, etc is worth around that $10k difference. Personally I'd save the money on the Rav4 but I'll likely end up getting the NX350h because the wait is 4-6 months vs 1.5-2 years for the Rav4 Hybrid and 3-5 years for the Rav4 Prime. Considering I'll be saving around $5k/year on gas compared to my current car the extra year+ wait makes it worth the difference.
The NX450h+ really seems like a bad value when you consider it's $10k more AND you don't get the $6.5 rebate. $16.5k more is way too much IMO.

This model DOES- NOT have a TURBO...But rather, a Naturally aspirated / Carb...........(important because it is well known that TURBOS stress engines)...simply said: see euro cars shop time!....this car combines the Elec Batt and engine to achieve *89 miles per Gallon in Hybred mode with HIGH torq, And VERY quick out of the hole...Jus' blew the doors off a 735i beemer...albeit for only a block ...( I am no dummy a V* will eventually pass many cars in the long dist. (in all fairness)
......However, who cares the thrill is initial take off and tickets are for high speed & SPEED...Kill's! My car has Red Calipers against Powder coated Gloss spoke Black mags and All red "F" Sport Badges........ FAR better built than euro's (mine built in Japan) sadly, new releases are now being made in Canada! Like USA Union shops...no one gets fired for a hang over and bad work??? maybe)..... However, Lexus is Far more reliable...Far better Re-Sale that Euro beemers or mercedes.......indeed mine has Gone UP in price...Not many cars you can find Like that!... IF YOU CAN FIND ONE ANYWHERE do grab it!......"econ 101".....Has (3) elec. motors gett'n 0 to 60 in 5.6 sec (road and track) HIGH torque QUICK out of Hole!......Never do I use gas..... gett'n 43 miles per 120 Volt charge (real world driving my experience.) and NEVER USE GAS....and almost Silent operation in elec....So do your research......as this is Far better than any European beemer or mercedes that are depreciating the moment you drive off the lot BIG TIME! And are un- reliable offering to say nothing of the GAS HOG unproven G 70, & RDX not worth mentioning. Z Best of the BEST F Sport 450h+ !
….One more thing, Jus' a heads up!......My wife drives the RX 2020 model...Consider putting Michelins on your NX 450h+ F Sport......Far and away EVEN a much smoother ride Much better ride than the HARD Run Flat Bridgestones that come stock. Carry a Batt. quality inflator ( DeWalt 20V MAX Corded/Cordless Air Inflator ) and string tar impregnated rope insert-er and Do-Not wait for AAA.

Rav4 hybrid is a $30-35k LE, XLE and XLE Premium is affordable and incredibly versatile AWD vehicle with fuel efficiency better than 5 year old cars and more cargo space than most comparably prices SUV's and the cheapest insurance cost for a hybrid vehicle in US. (cheaper than any other hybrid in US).
Rav4 Prime is a better and more powerful rav4 but for a whooping $10k more money. It's definitely worth it with $7500 federal incentive, but when it is cut to half $3750 (like right now) or a quarter $1875 (9 months from now) it is a simply vehicle competing in a different price bracket and couldn't compete with rav4 hybrid, instead it competes with Lexus NX and loses.

With the dealer markup for the RAV4, with XSE and Premium package and Lexus dealer in our area going back to MSRP for all their cars, we decided to have a look at both. You end up with a similar pricing.
We decided to go with Toyota and It came down to a simple reason, interior space. Lexus felt too snug both up front and in the back. Toyota feels spacious. Of course Lexus has much nicer materials all over but XSE with Premium package also feels like an upscale car in every sense. I love how Lexus integrated the touchscreen into the dashboard vs Toyota where it sits on top of it. In general Lexus dashboard is a lot cleaner. Toyota ride is fairly quiet but while in Lexus it's like sitting in your living room. Toyota has a touch better performance numbers, range, mpg and acceleration but in real world that doesn't mean much. It's interesting how Lexus looks more compact than Toyota, but Lexus is actually longer car. They really stuffed it with acoustic insulation. I like the Lexus look way better (and I didn't think that with previous generations), my wife likes Toyota. Rav4 still standa out among the mundane design of similar cars today. I don't like lots of creases and sharp lines on it. 2023 Rav4 is getting good chunk of technology that 2022 Lexus had.
We'd still have gone with Lexus if we were able to get it exactly how we wanted it. But no dealer, Lexus or Toyota, in our area is taking orders until inventory gets much better.
The struggle now is to buy a Toyota at MSRP. In our immediate area they're still being marked up. Well, people are paying for them...Just a little further out, 30-50 miles away, several dealers are selling at MSRP for for locals only. Some will not sell outside of local area, some will but with $3-5K markup (one is asking 10K over) or they'll sell at MSRP as long you buy extended warranty plus extended maintenance for $3K.
However this all points out that the market is slowly normalizing. I don't want to pay several thousands more now and regret it in a year.

I can attest to the NX safety. Nought a new MX 450H, totaled it after driving it for less than 1k miles 😥 (a drugged out person T-boned me on drivers side). Don't know how I survived that with very minimal injury, although the car was completely totaled with heavy driver side intrusion). I wanted to replace what I had, but I couldn't get a hold of another 450h+ and ended up getting a rav4 Prime XSE instead (it was the only thing that was readily available with a good deal after my car rental insurance ran out). Honestly it doesn't matter which one you buy both of them are excellent car. Not if you care about the horsepower the Lexus has 304 where the Toyota has 302 not much difference there. You do lose 5 miles EV range when you're using Lexus plus you lose the Federal grand. The only reason why you may want Lexus IS the quietness inside the car and the luxury look, besides that the engines are practically the same. When I was looking for a car I looked at both of them and the deal breaker was the Federal Grant and I'm losing EV range so I went for the RAV 4 prime.

Shopping around few states I was able to find a Prime XSE within a month..luck yes. There also isn't as many Lexus dealership as there are toyota and the ones that I was able to talk to they told me all of 2022 450H+ are sold out, I have to wait until 2023. The dealer markup is also riddiculous but i'm able to find one dealership where the markup was reasonable. Because there are fewer Lexus, most of their markup was the same, relatively high so not a lot of negotiation or shopping that can be done. I would agree with you that as a bells/whistles/build comparison it's a no brainer to go with Lexus class vs. Toyota, it's almost a given. However real work shopping experience and in this time would tend to dictate the typical consumer where money doesn't grow on trees so to a degree it's a moot point making the Toyota vs. Lexus comparison..just my humble and constructive feed back to your wonderfullly done video. We own two Rav 4 Primes that cost us $88,000 -$15,000 tax credit (over 2020 and 2021 tax year) = $73,000 out-the door for both.
