  • ( duckco.com/tfl... ) In what may be a surprising piece of news for crossover buyers out there, the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime XSE costs nearly $50,000 - roughly the same as a Tesla Model 3 Long Range. The Toyota packs full-electric driving capability with a conventional gasoline motor and carries a legendary reputation for reliability, but does that actually make it better than the full EV option? Roman and Tommy compare the two in this video.

    Don’t be so sure a Tesla guy wouldn’t buy this RAV4. I am a Tesla guy and I think this RAV4 Prime has some useful advantages...in the cold, in mild off-road situations, and in cases where long range is favored. A 42 mile all electric range is enough to cover my daily commute. I think your summary about Toyota becoming a technology company and Tesla becoming a manufacturing company is spot on. And this is good for EV adoption in general.

      After 2 months of daily driving, I am getting 53 miles of EV range in my Prime. I live in a very flat area, plus using climate control (or not) influences the EV range. But with non-aggressive starts and mindful climate control usage, I'm getting well above the 42 EV range advertised. This seems to be a case of under promised and over delivered.

    The 42 mile battery range is sufficient for most people. I can go back and fourth to work and charge at night and go a long time before I use up all the gas in the tank. Yep, if the rav4 prime was just a bit cheaper and could tow 3500lbs It would have the potential to finally pull me away from diesel. (or rather I would prefer a tacoma or 4runner hybrid - but I think I could make do with a rav4)
      I absolutely love that this would give me most of my day to day usage on electricity while living in society but still be practical for more remote work without electricity access (plus I just love toyota, my first car was one and I think I trust them more than most companies - although my current vw diesel is a trooper too)
      Good towing, plug in, and off-road performance would all need to align for me to switch to a hybrid, but they are getting very close to a perfect vehicle. I'm putting away a quarter of my wages for the next few years to buy a new car, so maybe when I can actually afford one they will meet all my needs - they are close right now

I owned and model 3 for the past year and can say from experience that unless you are driving in virtually perfect conditions and sticking to speed limits, you don’t get eve EPA. EVs seen much greater impact to the range than an ICE vehicle does when factoring these things in. Both cars can do that quite well. The main difference in terms of practicality is that the Tesla is all battery, which means you can use a lot more power (e.g. sleep in it running the AC for about a week), BUT you need the battery to drive which means ideally you need a way to charge it before arriving and shortly after leaving, adding some extra steps depending on how far you go. They both have pros and cons, where the Y has a mattress sized trunk (plus AC) to give a great benefit to car campers, while the Rav4 has less limitations around needing to rely on charging. Though if you camp at a place suitable for RVs, you may be able to plug both vehicles in which changes it up too.

    This video definitely needs to be revisited given the multiple price increases on the Model Y. A few things to consider on this video. Full disclaimer, we own a 2018 Model 3 and a 2012 standard Prius (still going strong).
    1) The Model 3 and Model Y are not luxury vehicles as stated in the video. Tesla purposefully goes for a minimalist approach to the interior, which sort of conflicts with the standard of being a luxury vehicle. I can tell you as a Model 3 owner of nearly 4 years, the minimalist approach starts to get annoying after a while. Just to open the glove box is more complicated than it needs to be, having to press the car emblem on the screen and then look for the glove box button of a crowded screen full of buttons. And with Tesla's OTA upgrades, sometimes the glove box button can get moved on the screen. Very annoying and unnecessary. We did get to drive a Model X recently as a loaner and it just had a standard button next to the glove box which was great. Why they don't do this in all of their vehicles is beyond me.
    2) We have the long range Model 3. Though it is "rated to 315-ish" miles, we have never personally experienced this much distance. The most we have gotten on a full, 100% charge is about 280 miles. The rated miles is typically achieved on a track and not under normal conditions such as uphill driving or needed moments of acceleration to get around drivers.
    3) Tesla is Bush league when it comes to delivering a vehicle without issues. Go online and you'll get plenty of stories of people receiving their car with multiple defects. We personally experienced this ourselves. Great car to drive, but only after dealing with the poor execution of delivery and subsequent visits to the service center to fix said defects.
    4) Tesla really shined when the rebates were available, which no longer exist accept on a diminished, state-level scale.
    Again, I really like our Tesla, but this Rav-4 has me considering alternatives. Especially since a Model Y is so expensive now.

      Loaded Rav4 is 49K minus 7.5K = 41.5K. Cheapest Y is 51K with no rebate and Performance is ten grand on top of that. The Tesla is a cool car but it is a terrible value given how many features it lacks. Saying it has better "tech" is meaningless. Their autopilot has the highest rate of false brake events on the highway, your phone only gets basic bluetooth integration with no Waze, and no heated wheel is absurd for an efficiency minded vehicle that's controlled entirely by a capacitive touch screen.

      It really does prime (pun!) people for the electric experience. I had a Ford Fusion Energi before I went full EV, just cause it was a significantly cheaper purchase. Even with only 20 miles of range I barely touched the gas engine, it really opened my eyes to how overblown the range discussion is and how much I like driving in that smooth quiet electric mode. Additional bonus was being a plug-in it surprisingly kept its resale value when I decided to go full electric.

    If the new Teslas were all autopilot full time, I could understand just having a touchscreen as the only interface, but besides that, I think it's dangerous to be having to focus on the screen to look for settings while driving. The RAV4 (I just bought a 2019 XLE) has a few touchscreen functions, but a majority can be done on the steering wheel and with physical knobs and buttons. The Teslas don't even provide a HUD to show your speed, you have to look over to the screen.

    • @electrified0
      @electrified0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The speedometer is completely visible from peripheral vision without looking away from the road, I was concerned about that but it's a non issue. As far as touchscreen goes, pretty much everything I would do while driving (AC/heat/navigation/etc) can be done from the voice commands, and volume has its own knob. I was pretty resistant to it at first, and if there was a climate knob option I definitely would have taken it, but in practice I haven't found myself ever needing to touch the screen while driving, and when I do it's always in auto pilot (or stopped).

    I actually shopped both of these but in the end the cost was a factor. The lowest cost Tesla model Y is now 63k with a 4.8 sec 0-60 while the lowest cost Toyota Rav4 Prime SE ends up being 35k after State and Federal rebates with a 0-60 at 5.7 sec. For my daily commute and trips around town I can easily stay under the 40-50 miles of EV range on the Rav4 prime and only end up filling the tank ever 3 months or so to accommodate some longer trips. While I may consider an all electric car in the future, the Rav4 Prime is a great crossover that lets people transition to the electric world because it has flexibility.

      What about when the batteries in the Tesla Model 3 are 6-8 years old and degraded and outdated? Some will lose supercharging ability since batteries are unsafe to fast charge after a certain amount of cycles. Telsa just shuts cars off software wise and you lose that option. It will lose range with those older batteries to. The big one is when Tesla brings in a new battery chemistry. I heard they were working on dry cells and maybe super capacitors to take initial bursts of power. With the first generation Model 3 people won't want that old battery as much as they will want the new one. So that will likely drive the value way down on current Tesla's.

When I found out the price and there was no budging on it plus I might have to pay a premium like in a bidding war on a house, I lost interest. I had a budget of 50K but the bidding war would bump it up way over that. I walked away from the dealership telling the guy I was no longer interested.
    I went and bought a base Model Y instead with the 19 inch wheels. Couldn't be happier with the tech that came with the car at that price. The driving dynamics is awesome in terms of handling and acceleration. The instant torque is insane! Even if you are cruising at 60 mph then floor it, your head will snap back into the headrest and before you know it you'll be at 90 or more.
    Had an electrician install a NEMA 14-50 240 volt outlet in the garage. Now I just plug the car charger in when I get home and set it to charge at off peak hours. Great comparison. Here in California, being eligible for rebates and carpool lane stickers is essential. RAV4 Prime and most of the Tesla Y model quality but there are limited rebates and caps on the numbers of stickers. RAV4 is close to the first gen Highlander in size and performance possibly faster but I'd still prefer a V6. Tesla Yuppie "Y" is a good size too more compact than Gen "X' Tesla.
    I'd take the RAV4 TRD. Bummer it doesn't come in hybrid form. Like range plus mileage of hybrids vs limited range of electric only. Would only look at the Prime if there was enough of a tax rebate 42k (50k-7.5k rounded) is still too much when TRD starts at 37K.
    For others 50k isn't a barrier and RAV4 Prime is more nicely appointed and better built than many of the luxury hybrids from BMW or Mercedes and a step above the electrics which is mostly Tesla. Great sleeper luxury car too that won't stand out. I expect RAV4 Prime and Tesla resale value to hold better than the luxury brands too.

I see the RAV4 Prime and the Model Y as rich man playthings that cannot in any reasonable frame of mind be justified because of economy, gas or electric savings; for the purpose of replacing a perfectly functional car that even might be a gas guzzler. Think of how long the pay back would be, especially with a huge loan, and in the case of the Toyota, dealership rip-offs and surcharges not only in buying the vehicle but in maintaining it with outrageous costs for scheduled oil and filter changes, spark plugs and radiator flushes. This is from a cranky ex-Prius owner.

      There is a cheaper version of the Rav4 Prime around $40k. You don't have to get the version that they are test driving. Also, I expect prices will come down for the Toyota once the Fed tax credit expires. Toyota isn't going to price it cheap and leave that much money on the table. Especially with low production.
      Tesla will come out with a slightly smaller and cheaper version. I expect a small crossover/hatchback. Battery costs still dropping rapidly so EVs will be more and more competitive.

      @@jonathansage2147 I certainly agree with you concerning carbon emissions - ideally all new cars must head to being electric and or fossil fuel free - indeed we should have a tapering fuel consumption requirement that will eliminate fossil fuel dependence. What is the irritating part for me is the consumption aspect, is my thinking that I have to get a new something shiny that has guilt-free carbon impact to replace a perfectly functional automobile. Besides the emissions required to build any car, electric or not, and the environmental impact of disposing the old gas one, the problem is the constant need we all have (myself especially included) to self-indulge, to spend, when we should be looking at our retirement future My thought is, if it isn't broke, don't replace it quite yet; but if it is time to get a new car, then see it as an investment in the future of our planet.

    • @toddwright662
      @toddwright662 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Robert Blackford You need to look a little deeper to get relevant reliability information for a Model Y. CR did its reliability "study" based on the brand as a whole. The two biggest repair issues were the auto-presenting door handles (Model S and X) and the Model X super complicated falcon-wing doors; both of these represented a large portion of "reliability issues" and neither are present on the Model Y. This was also done at a time when those models (S & X) were the vast majority of Teslas as the Model 3 had just begun deliveries within the prior year. The MY hasn't been out long enough to have reliability data so the best proxy is the M3, and everything I've seen on that is good on reliability and on EVs in general there just isn't much to fail that will leave you stranded roadside. That being said, I've been a Toyota guy most of my driving life; my first car was a Celica, I've owned two Corollas and two Priuses (Pri'i?), one of which I still own. All but the Celica, which was my first car and pretty high mileage, have been pretty solid.
      I think you have to give the benefit of the doubt to Toyota on the reliability category at this stage due to their huge overall body of work, but it doesn't look like there's a big delta between the two when you look at Tesla's less complex vehicles (M3 & MY); and when there is enough data to properly adjudicate the question, it may turn out that the much less complex full EV drive train wins out.

  • @belavet

    The Toyota has two major things going for it. First and foremost it's still eligible for the $7500 federal tax credit and up to $1500 state tax credits dropping the price by up to $9k. While we are in the topic, it's worth noting the RAV4 prime starting msrp is $38,100, which is already a good deal cheaper than the model y.
    Next, I think it's still more attractive for many buyers to have the option of using gasoline. Range anxiety is a very real thing, especially in colder climates. Having the peace of mind that you have a gas station on every corner, or that you can be bailed out by a buddy or AAA with a can of gas is invaluable. I know the supercharger network is immense and I fully believe in it but not all people buy into all electric immediately and this type of vehicle is a good bridge for that.
    The bad news is I think the US is only getting 5k of these and Toyota has allowed them all to states that offer that additional subsidy. Will be interesting to see if we see more as the years go on or what Toyota has planned.
