    Out of the 4 videos I have watched, this is the only one that actually explained how this type of knife works- thank you!

    This is the only video that I've watched that actually explained it well. I finally am able to grasp the concept of an otf switchblade.

    You are actually so good at explaining it like,I haven’t seen any other video that explains it.

    You probably have the best video explaining the action. I've had microtechs, lightening otf blades, and I never wanted to take it apart but was always curious. Most other videos just go, "hey. Yea these springs move the blade with the switch and it locks. There ya go." With your slow motion bit and this particular blade it was easy to see how it works. I made a manual otf today at work on a whim and was thinking how I could automate one myself. I now know my next totally work related dont ask questions project in the machine shop.

    Excellent information/demonstrational video. Its great that you have gone into the actual mechanics of this device. These are illegal down here in Australia, so I plan to make my own. Thankyou very much. Cheers mate.

    Great explanation! Thank you!
    Your last point is key to understanding the whole mechanism.

    Ok. Thanks again. The switch itself actually creates the tension. Thats where i was stuck. So say a push button, would not work in this design. Cheers your educating the world my good sir

    Mate this video was great, I pulled apart a cheap one I scored at the flea market today and learned how it worked along with watching ur video, also had an Epiphany as well, the mechanism works just like a stapler when u load the staples in :) never woulda understood that properly without watchin ur vid. cheers from Australia!

    I am trying to figure out how to use this same type of mechanism for longer, wider, thicker blades that would be coming out of the business end of a walking stick.
    I have made sword sticks, I have made electronic shocking sticks, what I would love to be able to figure out is how to incorporate the basic mechanics of these knives to, either work with a much bigger blade(the locking mechanism would neat some adjustment
    The other idea is to have a few projectiles( basically a heavy dart or bolt) that can be shot out of a walking stick, using just say a 80# push spring. (Possibly even rubber bands as in a spear gun, just with all the guts in the inside of the stick, don't want it to look like anything but a walking stick. Just a couple ideas, you mentioned that you did some fooling around with making a few yourself, would love to hear what you think about this in a much larger capacity? Thanks

      Be wary of old man or woman with walking stick. If you want a projectile you might be better off with compressed air.

    I bought a $125 out the front Knife locally. I had it open and stuck it into a piece of ham. It never worked right again. I brought it back to the shop where I bought it and we took the knife apart and there was this little teeny tab that was all that was keeping the blade out when you stuck it into something. When I stuck the tip of the knife into the ham that little teenie tab bent and could not be repaired. I ended up getting a cheaper Out The Front Knife and some money back, but now I'm afraid any Out The Front Knife that gets stuck into something firmer than jello will break.

      HI! I will respond to both of your comments here! It sounds like you got a lemon, do you remember the brand? All OTF DA knives (that I am aware of) have either 1 or 2 of those little spring tabs to hold the blade out, however they should be hardened steel. I would guess that either the knife purchased was a counterfeit, or that that the locking lever that bent was not hardened properly. No matter what, an OTF knife that is double action will be more fragile than a simple folder or fixed blade simply due to having more moving parts. All that aside, if that piece is bending, then it is likely simply a lemon. If you have any more info on the brand of knife it was I would be interested to know! Thanks for the comment, and hope this helps!

    I used one of these to design a real hidden blade The way it works is I have my wedding ring and it's hooked up to a tiny tiny piece of string you can barely see it I flex my wrist back and it'll pull the knife out. I pull my knuckle inThe knife goes right back in fairly simple but it's really skinny you can barely shit underneath my clothing.

    i bought this one for about 23 $ and it was broken after just one day, so i watched this video because i hoped to repair it, unfortunately the piece which is connected to the spring teared off so you have to change it, who knows where you can get those?

    My otf is weird. I have to push the switch forward and the blade doesn’t come out, I have to tap it on a table or something and then the blade comes out. But when I push the switch down it goes down normally. Any help on how to fix that? Oh and I been seeing some metal shavings so I know it’s grinding somewhere, and I’ve oiled it but idk.

    What's the casing/blade guide channels made of? plastic, alloy or steel? Doesn't appear very durable.
    Cheerz for explaining it. I'd often wondered how they worked too.

    • @BladesandBoom
      @BladesandBoom  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      they are some sort of pot metal, nothing good, a nicer knife would likely use a hardened steel that is polished, the one used is a cheapo flea market knife.

      what exactly do you want to do with it? Something like a cane sword thing? If you can take it apart I would think just making the slide longer would work?

    I have this same knife and was wondering where can I get replacement Springs or what can be used as a replacement

    • @BladesandBoom
      @BladesandBoom  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! I am not 100% sure as I have never had to get one before, that being said, a cheap temporary alternative would be rubber bands. That aside though I would look at sites that sell kits and parts for building knives such as Knifekits .com and I believe there may be a switchbladekits .com as well. I have never ordered from either of them though so you may search a little more to ensure they are reputable.

      Blades and Boom thanks I think it's the main spring bit not sure it the blade will come out but won't retract back

    • @BladesandBoom
      @BladesandBoom  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      if it is the same knife then I wouldn't think it is a broken spring since it is a single spring design, I would guess it has something to do with either the sled that the spring rides within, the bracket that is supposed to catch on the blade tang pin, or the tang pin itself. Hope you can get it fixed though!

    I like that no name chinese otf! Any idea where online I might find one just like it?

    • @BladesandBoom
      @BladesandBoom  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! I am honestly not sure, I believe it is supposed to be somewhat of a counterfeit of an "AKC Italy CONCORD" knife. I am not sure if the one I have in the video is even made anymore as chinese knock offs tend to be somewhat of a flavor of the month it seems and fade in and out, however, if it is the look you are going for. look at that AKC, I'm not super familiar with the brand, but I can say it is almost for sure better built than the one in the vid!

    this is how assassins creed hidden blades work in case you didn't know. they just have another bit that changes the up and down switch thing into circular.

      That circular to linear converter mechanism is unnecessary in HB and can be replaced with smaller, more efficient mechanisms.

    • @BladesandBoom

      This specific one has no name, it is a cheap Chinese one from a flea market. That being said, if you search for "double action OTF" knives a lot will pop up. it is an automatic out the front double action knife.

      It is hard to say without actually looking at the knife, what model/brand is it? Off the top of my head, my guess would be that there is some grit/dirt in one of the latches that is interfering.
