Why Silver is Perfectly Flawed

- Silver the Hedgehog is a character who isn't free from making mistakes. However the lessons that Silver learns from his failures are what I believe make him a compelling character. So join me as I break down why Silver is a perfectly flawed character.

Ah yes, Silver and Blaze. The curse of 06 caused Sega to completely forget about some of their best characters, which is a real shame... Hope we see either of them in a future game at some point.
Fr, at least we get to see them a decent bit in the IDW comics.
or those live action movies !
@@WaffleProductionsInMotion They had to bend over backwards to justify it though.. and for me, fan service without strong enough justification can really pull me out of the story.
How does Silver feel like he has no purpose or "sense of direction" when his future is finally at peace, and he can take the time to explore himself in the world he helped to build? Not to mention, he's STILL the planet's protector in the future. That's his "direction." So.. why would he ever go back to the past and risk jeopardizing that again? If he feels lonely, he can just talk to the people in his own time. There's no reason to think he couldn't, lol.
@@DLxxxif i remember correctly he didn't go back in time on purpose, i remember him saying he got "sent back". that's why he's having a bit of a crisis, his future is already fixed so he has no idea why he's here, what's wrong and what he has to do to fix it
Agreed
I really like Silver--he really is the most relatable character.
Thanks
Me too.
Agreed.
Yes. I can relate to him in the Idw story Future Growth.
yes, i too come from the future because it’s falling apart, i’m also a hedgehog
(this is a joke btw)
Silver gets way too much hate when I think he's one of the better characters.
Agreed
True
Fr
i didn't know he got hate, but that makes no sense
Honestly the only reason I disliked him as a kid was his boss fight. I was launched into space.
One trait of Silver’s in the Archie continuity that enthralled me was his use of a stoic, businesslike façade. I remember first reading 30 Years Later and being very confused-I knew that the Silver in the games was naïve and emotional, so this change in characterization threw me for a loop. Upon closer inspection, I realized that he was attempting to project a sense of calm as a ‘correction’ of his excitable, overeager nature (this façade proves very fragile-the lightest of questioning has him breaking composure).
At first, I believed he was doing this out of practicality-he needs to seem competent and confident so heroes like Sonic will work with him and take him seriously, despite his lack of information and contrasting tendency to make outrageous accusations. But your analysis suggests that Silver’s behavior is also due to his uncertainty and insecurity, something that didn’t occur to me but now completely makes sense. I feel that the running gag of Silver pointing out how much Sonic owes him during IDW’s Metal Virus arc is particularly illuminating-his ability to have Sonic the Hedgehog be indebted to him must be a great source of pride.
Even if by accident, I feel that his portrayal in Forces fits with this idea of a façade-Silver tends to speak lines that sound cool and intelligent (“Fear is a luxury we don’t have.”, “If we want the people to rally, we have to show them strength doesn’t come from numbers!”, “Does anyone but you believe your lies?!”) but are either contradictory or contribute nothing to the conversation at large. This could easily come off as just poor writing, but another scene suggests otherwise; when Knuckles brags about Operation: Big Wave, his plan to attack Eggman’s metropolis, Silver says “Who cares what it’s called? What’s important is to have a well-thought-out strategy.”
If Silver is acutely aware of Knuckles’ bluster, then it stands to reason that he’d be aware of his own as well. When you think about it, it’s hard not to see why Silver would choose to speak in such a manner; in the absence of Sonic and Shadow, Silver would be the most powerful member of the resistance, and thus would feel responsible for replacing the Blur Blur as the world’s beacon of hope. However, he lacks both Sonic’s confidence and the charisma of a proper leader. Thus, without the tools to naturally be inspiring, he feels the need to spout shallow drivel that he hopes comes off as inspiring instead of stupid.
The conflict between Silver and Mimic/Duo in the more recent IDW issues is emblematic of something I hadn’t yet realized was so important to Silver as a character; his relationship with control. Silver’s abilities naturally allow him control over his physical environment, but in every other way he seems to lack it. He’s been manipulated by malevolent individuals multiple times in the past-individuals that would manipulate his actions and thus seize agency from himself. Silver struggles with keeping his impulsivity in check, particularly when it comes to rashly passing judgment on others and accusing them of crimes.
While Sonic is portrayed as a free spirit, and Shadow as someone calm and controlled (like how Silver sometimes portrays himself) that has dealt with their past, Silver often seems anxious and even panicked in comparison, as well as being a slave to his mythologized ‘good future’. His naivety and lack of awareness bites him more than once, and he seems to exclusively be a follower instead of a leader.
The scene in which Duo feigns injury by Silver’s hands seems to highlight this. Silver manages to track down the infiltrator and attempts to intimidate him through use of his psychokinesis. This serves as an evolution of Silver’s façade; Silver realizes that he cannot command through his presence, and instead uses his immense power to show the control he has over the situation. Note that instead of just picking him up, Silver lifts him using a chair, as if to say, “Hey, you’re not immobilized. Why don’t you try to escape? Oh wait, you can’t. Despite being able to move, you are still trapped.”
Despite the honestly impressive threat, Silver underestimates Duo, who purposely falls out of his seat and injures himself, showing that he is the one with control over the situation. This incident causes Silver to lose his place on the Diamond Cutters, robbing him of his power within the Restoration and eliminating one of Duo’s main threats. Resolving this issue of control seems to be the most logical development for Silver’s character in the future, and I’m very excited to see exactly how it happens.
This is a really good breakdown of Silvers character! Thank you for your input!
The facade makes him seem like he's taking things seriously, considering his backstory and motives. I like that.
great analysis!! i feel like this would be worthy of a video by itself
@@sopapoppCorrect!
I like your analysis, but I have to strongly disagree with you regarding #64. It and #63 was basically the result of Duo almost blowing his cover right after he was introduced, and Evan Stanley needing to dumb everyone else down so he could not only get away with it, but be literally handed sensitive documents for Clutch. If Whisper and Lanolin bothered to explain the full situation of WHY Silver had seemingly injured Duo, or if Tangle and Jewel bothered to ask what happened and why before final judgements were made, the issue would have turned out somewhat differently.
Instead, it felt like Lanolin purposefully left out context to make it seem like Silver had attacked Duo for no good reason and left out Whisper's involvement so only he would get immediately kicked out without issue, even glaring at Tangle (who felt ooc saying her team was more important) when she was about to speak up. I understand that Evan needed Silver out of the story and that it's supposed to reflect how impulsive he is, but the way she did so felt so pointlessly mean-spirited that it's no wonder that a big controversy regarding the writing had formed. What doesn't help is that #67 doesn't even revisit the issues #64 created, like Silver's reputation possibly being impacted or any kind of internal tension between the Diamond Cutters since Whisper was the one who publicly accused Duo of being Mimic.
Overall, I like the comic, and Silver is one of my favorite characters too, just not some of the recent issues. And I hope Evan took whatever criticism she heard to heart before she wrote the upcoming ones.
I do like how espio took a different approach than blaze. Instead of recalling how someone else acts, he pulls directly from himself, which given the lesson, is more effective. He's already dealing with imposter syndrome, but thing is, the chaotix aren't mentioned to much in any future. So for him to struggle with the same thing silver does is naturally more comforting. It shows he can deal with it, regardless of his imposter syndrome, as even those not remembered as that important, despite silver knowing their importance due to learning about the past, they're still living creature's, with fears and worries all the same as him. They're the heroes he feels he's a part of, if at all, so to hear from one of them how they deal with anxiety too, and hiw he can rely on them to help with it, it's more assuring to him than shadow or knuckles saying it.
Reminds me of this line from an anime
"Your right your aren't any good at all no on is there is-int a single person anywhere in the world who dos-int think that, everyone thinks there no good an there hopeless an they think an they think an they think that an its all they can do, even I think like that"
"I will not let run away without doing anything about it, am not letting you get away with that"
I like how silver and blaze balance each other out. Blaze keeps silver out of trouble and silver makes sure blaze actually talks to people
Blaze never needed Silver to socialize with others. Cream was the one who did the most to open her up.
He's such a cool character. And having flaws for a character in general is what makes them unique.
I really hope we see more of him again soon
i've always loved silver. of all the characters, he feels the most genuine and realistic to me
me too
I love Silver
He desurves better then Sega gives him
Silver has honestly surprised me by how deep his IDW stories are. He may fail a lot, be naive, bullheaded, and gung-ho, but he learns, grows, is optimistic, and always tries to do the right thing. And that is very admirable.
We all share worries and anxieties, but when you have friends like he does, we have no need to deal with those feelings alone.
This is probably my favorite analysis of Silver's character I've seen so far, and my favorite video of yours! This character is my favorite, and means a lot to me due to how relatable he is. You perfectly encapsulated how strong and compelling his journey is and why so many hold him near and dear to their hearts.
I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Silver is a very relatable character that deserves more time to shine 😁
@@SonicTheory96This is one of the best analyses of Silver the Hedgehog alongside those by The PJ Show, Ranni, ACE Card Gaming, ItsNickForShort and Characters in Depth (who also do fantastic jobs reviewing how the Sonic characters interact general should be portrayed compared to how they shouldn’t).
@@kieranstark7213 I truly appreciate that!
I love Silver, he's so cute and lovable in many ways and is currently my third favorite character from this franchise beside Sonic and Shadow, I hope that a game about him gets made soon. I also hope that Silver becomes the character who will make an appearence in the mid-credits scene of the upcoming Sonic 3 movie so Silver can be included into the SCU (Sonic Cinematic Universe) by Paramount also next making a Sonic 4 movie that would be a loose adaption of Sonic 06 and have that studio NOT include into it the unliked parts of that game's story plot.
It would be a lot of fun to see Silver in the Sonic movie universe 😁
@@SonicTheory96True, that's why I hope that it will officially happen.
Silver is madly underated but his debut game and return in Sonic Rivals onwards gave the wrong impression of him to fans of the series. The IDW comics have done a lot to redeem him.
And yet it was the Rivals games that introduced his amazing friendship with Espio, and paved the way for that excellent IDW mini-story between them. When it comes to this franchise, I believe is important to value the strengths and triumphs as much, if not more, than the weaknesses and missteps. Rivals is a good example, as well as Battle, Shadow's game, even the Game Gear games and Forces. All flawed and with fair criticisms being warranted yet gave us so much good material, ideas, concepts, characters and more that are ripped for further exploration and celebration.
@@lucas.n.carvalho.artist Sorry I phrased that wrong. I meant to say the gameplay of those games gave a bad impression rather than the character interactions themselves. What you said is true.
@@EdgardoJCruz-dk5kv Ah yes, the gameplay idea of racing another character/player definitely was better implemented in other games. (Forces Speed Battle app and the SA2 Multiplayer are the ones that come to mind)
Silver is my favorite Sonic character, always has been, always will be
Silver is my absolute favorite Sonic character and I recently got back into the IDW comics-pretty much everything said in this video makes so much sense and makes me like Silver even more😊 amazing analysis👍
Thanks that means a lot! The IDW comics are really good and I'm glad they've given so much depth to Silver in them!
I remember seeing silver in the back of an Archie sonic comic book and looking him up I saw the opening of his story and thought he was cool He is by far my favorite sonic character I might even go as far to say he’s my favorite character ever I’ve been dealing with an intense anxiety disorder since age seven and I’ve always liked him for his powers colors and just his style ig lol I noticed his anxiety in 06 but after idw sonic launched I identify with him a lot
Silver is a captivating character and I'm glad you found him relatable!
Silver is basically Future Trunks' fursona and I'm all for it. Both are young and naive and are desperate to catch up to the heros from the past. Also both are the only ones brave enough to be optimistic in a broken world filled with nothing but hopelessness.
This is the first analysis I've seen that tackles Silver's anxiety, particularly his portrayal in IDW. I love the attention you brought to it and his friends' response to it. It's oddly reassuring to see someone as capable/powerful as Silver struggle with doubt and anxiety as much as anyone else might. He might make a mistake here and there, but he's trying his best and his efforts often ARE enough. Sometimes it just takes some outside perspective to see that.
Thanks for the analysis! It doubles as a nice pick-me-up too, which is an awesome thing to start the day with. 😊
I'm really glad that you enjoyed the analysis! Thank you so much for the kind words!
I really can't stand the IDW comics, but I love Silver and Blaze (and Omega). It's nice to know they're being treated with respect and the care they deserve. Silver is a great character. Although my favorite version is definitely Archie.
I think you really summed up Silver perfectly here. His flaws and personal struggles make him more relatable than Sonic and Shadow. Silver has immense power, and will gladly show it off, but not just flaunt it. The stoic mask he wore in 06, and later in the Rivals games, continues to break the more time he spends with the cast. He may not see it himself, but he is as much a hero as any one of them. His failures and learned to grow as a hero is such a great story, and is why I want him to have a big role in the games again. And I am very happy that IDW is re-exploring his friendship with Blaze. Silver is my favorite character and I always love seeing him.
I can relate to silver. Since the beginning of last year, I’ve been experiencing anxiety and self doubt (more then normal, and I’m usually pretty confident and optimistic), I’m still naive and I have problems with social cues (I’m autistic, so I can be a little too trusting for my own good, so much so that I have trouble seeing red flags). I’m still working on myself and growing, and I hope to become the best version of myself in the future. Despite my short comings and the challenges I face, I’m never giving up. My optimism is still there, sometimes it just gets shy. Silver is a great character, and I’m glad he got more development in the comics (gosh I need to read more of these comics)
Yes, someone was able to explain why Silver the Hedgehog is my all time favorite character in the Sonic series. Thank you, great well written video and analysis.
I always look forward to new character analysis videos about Silver, and this one did not disappoint
I LOVE SILVER THE HEDGEHOG and he's one of my favorite characters. He is so unique compared to the rest of his friends. He has psychonesis he's able to make objects using them and he's able to lift everything around him including people. And he's able to use chaos energy to turn into a super form and to perform chaos control. He's strong enough to beat sonic and almost kill him if Amy and Shadow didn't step into help him. And he was doing all this to protect a future where everyone can live in peace. And he lost the best friend while trying to complete this mission. And that's why I love Silver so much. He embodies so much hope in a dead world. Silver is always trying to protect his loved ones and to protect his future. His naivete is actually his greatest strength since it drives him to be more good. He's just a guy who has been through a lot of tragedy and pain, who is still trying to make a change. And Silver is way more stronger than people think he is and the infinite situation isn't exactly the best scenario of how strong Silver can be. He was able to fight deities and fight a God like being that is present in the past, the present, and the future and he was able to beat that. But what really keeps this guy going is that burning optimism and that sense of justice knowing that everyone will reach their absolution and their dreams. And he's just adorable gum drop who just really needs a hug. And his theme song actually shows his feelings about losing a friend and wishing for that dream of that absolution. And the IDW comics really gives Silver his great character of how well he can hang out with sonic and the rest of the crew. He's like the optimistic sense of hope in that one friend in your group. I would compare him to like Steven Universe as a good example. And having his cool moments like fighting against the metal virus and hanging out with the diamond cutters and even going super along with Sonic it's beating the Metal virus once and for all. He was able to do all these things and prove that he can be one of the most powerful as people in that universe and that's why I love Silver for who he is. His idea is so abstract, special, and unique in a way. A person who always holds hope even in the most darkest of times and never gives up. That's what makes SILVER THE HEDGEHOG so GREAT and BEAUTIFUL 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩!!!!!
This is the first time I've seen somebody compare Silver to Booster Gold, I thought I was the only one.
Great video, by the way!
I'm glad someone else saw the similarity! Thank you so much 😊
Silver needs his own game! He’s been my favorite Sonic character for years, and Sega needs to give him the love he deserves.
Silver would be me if I was superhero. I would be worrying and experiencing so much anxiety when being a hero. I would feel so bad if someone got hurt because of me. I’m confident and I trust in my abilities, but I also tend to get frustrated or upset if I’m not immediately good at something, or if I’m struggling to do something that I’m usually very good at doing. I do get anxious, but I try not to dwell on those feelings, but sometimes it gets so strong. Unlike Silver I don’t tend to trust people I just met, until my intuition tells me I can, although if my intuition doesn’t like someone, I tend to bury it, chocking it up to my social anxiety, it’s an enigma. I have so much hope and optimism for the future, I trust humanity to do the right thing, to better the future, not just for us, but for Earth itself.
Silver was already of my favorite Sonic characters. I always liked it, and this video just made me like him even more. Thanks, mate!
Im so glad my boy is finally getting the treatment he truly deserves. Silver will always be my favourite character - nothing will change my mind.
Silvers is one of my favorite characters in Sonic because he’s cool, optimistic, kind, selfless, and while he struggles with his emotions and with his trustworthiness it’s how he’s able to comeback from his mistakes and betters himself and was able to save the world. He’s relatable because he’s imperfect and falters like anyone else but he learns and grows.
Thank you @Sonic Theory
This was so in-depth. I'd love to see an analysis on Blaze at some point.
Now I wanna see crossover of SEGA and DC where Silver and Booster Gold working together :(
Seeing them travel through time together would be hilarious and awesome
Honestly Silver feels more real compared to the other characters...
ALSO HE'S ADORABLE

@@cupf1shLowkey I don't blame them. One side says his new personality is too exaggerated and underestimates his pride and strength (based from 06/Rivals), the other says it's an upgrade and natural development to the stoic "edginess" of 06 Silver and pure serious Rivals Silver.
I love Silver. He is my sec.fav Character in Sonics lineup. Espacily that you have really think to really realize what he all did. How many times, he the only one was who coude save everyone.
Silver always reminded me of a pre RotJ Luke Skywalker. He possesses great power, but his naivety and willingness to prove himself often get him into danger. All he needs is the proper guidance from his newly found friends to help him on his journey to become the true hero of the future.
Cool Video Bro! Silver deserves more love. And his Nintendo Counterpart is Rauru The Sage Of Light and the First King of Hyrule. And Rauru also showed to have Telekinesis in Tears Of The Kingdom. So Silver should be in Sonic's Version of Tears Of The Kingdom.
Ahhhh that Halo ODST soundtrack mixed with Some Sonic content. I love it
What’s the halo soundtrack called?
It's nice ro see someone giving Silver the recognition he deserves!
Great video! I love Silver! Such a sweet wholesome character that has so much to offer to the world of Sonic. Also I love the use of Halo ODST music! Maybe I should start using some Halo soundtracks too lol 🤔!
Thanks! Silver really is such a great character, I would love to see him return in a game. I'd certainly recommend using Halo music, it oddly fits well for Sonic videos lol
Silver needs his own game with blaze in it too
Silver is always my favorite for all time

Silvers my favorite character! I’m hoping for a silver game now that there’s been an announcement of a shadow game coming out
Can't find a video that just goes over his story and lore like I can for many other fan favourites.
I never knew I could relate to Silver so much. My buddy compared me to him when I didn't know about the character, and I can see what he means.
He was like Sonic, our other friend was like Shadow, and I somehow came into the group as Silver, how fitting.😊
ooh, nice analysis!! silver is one of my favorite characters and I liked how you explained his journey!
could u do a video on nine? I feel like he’s also a character that deserved more time to shine; his arc felt incomplete with the way the writers decided to handle him in sonic prime s3
Yeah it would be fun to do a breakdown on Nine
Silver's flaws went over my head until now and I believe its all because of how well written he is
i allright this version of silver, its so good.
I completely agree. Nothing more to really be said.
I first got into Sonic around when the 06 game came out (mostly from watching Sonic X). I didn't have any game systems aside from whatever gameboy was out back then, but I watched the cutscenes on youtube. Something about Silver just resonated with me, and he has been my favorite Sonic character ever since. It's always a treat when he shows up in an adaptation.
the halo 3 odst music playing in the background is so fitting and soothing, I dig it a lot.

I guess this is why I like him so much

I love Silver no matter what. Comics, Sonic 06, and even when he wants his Dennys Grandslam. 😫

That’s why I wish Silver has more expanded his own arc.
This is. Why I like silver he is relatable and he can be sometimes very nice he is my favorite character
Missed opportunity to call him "Perfectly Imperfect".
Yea, becouse no body is perfect.
We all can sometimes make mistakes in real live too.
That's why I like Silver he is a character who is not perfect but he also try his beast to stand up for his mistakes, no mather how hart dificoult and hopless the situation actually is right now.
He’s one of my favs tbh
He’s basically me 🥹
Where can I read the IDW comics and where do I start??
Yes yes yes yes everything about this is perfect thank you
Y’know it is kinda interesting how similar Knuckles and Silver are. They’re both naive from isolation and tricked into fighting sonic for whatever reason. Shadow also fights sonic, but it’s more a means to an end for him, he doesn’t care about sonic in particular for most of the game. Knuckles and silver are led to believe sonic specifically is their target. They’re still differentiated by their responses to being tricked. Knuckles still believes in himself, turning around and clobbering the correct target when he finds out. Silver will still try to do what’s right, but doesn’t believe in himself because he was tricked.
He deserves a hug
I honestly can't see booster gold similar to silver since booster is kinda a showbod but I can agree they both want to do what's right at the end
My comparison was more so aimed at the imposter syndrome that both characters deal with.
If you do any form of media, can you do a topic on Chase and Skye’s relationship from Paw Patrol next?
Espio was the true hero in that part
Silver character wise is kinda like Nero from Devil May Cry, a Silver Bullet-Time Stasis if that's funny
Even mathematically, we can make a character chart out of Sonic comparison with Dante, as a basic function...
F(x) Positive, Stylish Trickster Breakdancers: Sonic & Dante
F(-x) Negatives, Calculated, Reserved, Technique and Force oriented: Shadow & Vergil
-F(-x) Inverted Negatives, Impulsive, Expressive, Brute Force and Raw Power: **Silver & Nero**
But that is three quadrants, we run out of DMC characters...
_Not yet..._
The director of Devil May Cry 1 was left out of production for Devil May Cry 2 (A sonic '06 worse/unfun equivalent)
What did he create with _Platinum Games?_
**Bayonetta**
A female hot witch, Prima Veladonna from another dimension taking care of a small child by seemingly having to keep her composure on the job. Associated with Jazz, the genre used in Vela-Nova (Blaze boss theme), A complete opposite of Dante & Sonic.
-F(x) : Blaze & Bayonetta
By this sheer bizarre set of events, we can set order from Quadrant I to IV as followed
Sonic/Shadow/Silver with Blaze ending the Unit Circle
&
Dante/Vergil/Nero and ending with Bayonetta
All those characters have their own backstories and quirks that make them unique without plagarising.
So how does Silver fit into this?
He has potential, he's a little confused and poorly written in certain places, but he's got the Spirit.
...& Mabye a little on why people ship Sonic & Blaze, the same way people want a Bayo/DMC crossover...
**OPPOSITES COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER**
Sonic had more time with Blaze, Silver needs more time for any relationship, and the Cat needs to choose herself so that's 50/50 fair and square.
So, Ian Flynn, take the wheel...
Why write all of this?
Because I can finally make a _Crimson Cloud_ joke
_SAVIOR_
_BLUESTAIN_
_SOLFIRE_
_SHADOW_
_HEAVEN ON A LANDSLIDE_

Silver is like Trunks in Dragonball Z.
I lived sonic '06. To me it was one of the better sonic games. Like generations is good but not as good as the story for sonic '06. I loved the intro for Silver and Blaze. I mainly pick blaze when playing the Olympic games with Mario. I love both of their designs. They have the best designs in my opinion.

I don't recall them having much interaction but Silver reminds me of early Archie Knuckles in his naivete, probably why he spends time with Chaotix members.
The difference is Silver wants friends and wants to believe in people while Knuckles is more cynical and quick to accept accusations.
Silver actually is a DBZ Reference

How about Silver in the Pre-Reboot Archie comics?
I Have a feeling that everyone in the sonic universe, are mentality monsters which is good, but it didnt give the full growth for the character. It is like beating already beating a game in hard mode whereas characters like Tails and Silver needs that easy-mid levels to complete and have that bit of the confidence.
