    Eeeeek! My bread and butter. I’ve said this so many times: one of the reasons celebrity dolls don’t work is because they’re imprinting a real person’s face onto a doll. These are DOLLS. As in, stylised human beings (for the most part). I think to get the perfect celeb doll, you need to strike a balance between the celebrity’s likeness while also stylising the features. Emma Watson’s doll is SCARY. That little girl yammering about “witchcraft dolls” should take a look at her😭

    • @KingOfGaymes
      @KingOfGaymes ปีที่แล้ว +65

      The best celebrity dolls are the stylized ones! Like the myscene Lindsay Lohan or the 2023 little mermaid dolls from Mattel are great examples, they look similar enough to the celebrities but still stylized like a doll. After so many failures of celeb dolls looking haunting, I can’t understand why companies still try making them look “real” 😭

    The childcare center I went to after school when I was a kid had a lot of these ugly celebrity dolls (basically all the ones from the late 90's early 00's). I am 100% certain they got donated (or strategically left there) by some parent who needed to get rid of a disappointing christmas/birthday present FAST. @1977TA ปีที่แล้ว +6

      No matter if it's a doll, an action figure, or a 1/6th scale collectable figure from Hot Toys, face likeness is always hit or miss. Sometimes the face looks nothing like the person and sometimes it looks like the person but only from certain angles and lighting. Even the best and most expensive figures/dolls will have something about their face that is just not quite right. I'm not sure why this is the case but I haven't come across a figure based on a celebrity that got the face 100 percent accurate. So even if you were heavily involved with the production of a doll version of you, it's likely going to end up with likeness issues.

  • @cyanidae_
    @cyanidae_ ปีที่แล้ว +274

    the other issue i notice is the body proportions don't match, if you're going for a realistic face you can't take unrealistic body proportions! fashion dolls are extremely stylized and that includes the bodies. and i realize they're not going to always invent new body shapes for a single doll, but then that means they gotta start designing the head for the body as well.
    also like. molded laugh lines are something that just isn't typical of dolls. we're used to the flat faced smiles, to add that much depth adds age!
    they need to remember to do a stylized version of the person they're modeling after, not to force realism onto a stylized canvas -- doll repainters might be able to accomplish it, but they do it with shading and detail that is not going to be feasible with screenprinting!

  • @PhoenyxV

  • @epowell4211
    @epowell4211 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Just saw the Bindi Irwin doll for the first time the other day, and have to assume the only reason she is not on your list is because you haven't seen her. Not only it is the ugliest, most horrifying doll, the fact that it was of a child who then had to do promos with it is just heartbreaking. Every kid is self-conscious about their features, to the point I can't imagine Bindi even wanted to be made into a doll, but then to be told "this doll is a likeness of you, this is how we see you" when the doll is the maybe the worst caricature of her appearance, must be devastating. Mattel celebrity doll fails really annoy me since there are so many head sculpts already in their library that they just need to master the face paint, but then they go and create a new monstrosity instead.

  • @Nightman221k

    I think a lot of these used face-scanning to match the face shape of the actresses (which is why when you see doll repaints where they put meticulous detail and effort into the paint it looks very accurate). A telltale sign of it is cheekbones and "apples of cheeks" you can see those looking really pronounced in the Emma Watson and Hillary Duff dolls. I know that the face scanning became popular when Buffy had a line of collectable dolls and Sarah Michelle Geller wasn't satisfied with the first wave of dolls that weren't using face scanning, making the later waves more accurate and authentic to the actors. With a lazy paintjob or low-effort quality control on making sure the face actually looks like the actress the overly detailed face shape with printing that doesn't match is why we get things like pretty actresses looking terrible in doll form. The Kylie Minogue one is so tragic, someone needs to give those dolls a worthy face paint job like Hextian or Poppen Atelier cause the face scan was good but the eye print and flat makeup look so terrible.

    i'm french, in the 70's-arly 80's Mattel made a doll of a french singer for kids named Chantal Goya. her face was actually nicely resembling and soft as far as i can see on photos. decades later, Mattel also made another doll of a french iconic singer Johnny Halliday. despite the guy himself being ugly, the doll was also pretty resembling and not uncanny looking. i think the "toned down" reproduction of the traits is the key to a good celebrity doll. the Margot Robbie doll, on the other hand.... i prefer when doll artists repaint her. still the sculpt is not at fault, only the factory paint is.

    I have the Disney store Black Widow doll and I actually don't mind her hair. It was crazy crunchy with gel when I got it out of the box but once I washed it, it's actually really nice and super soft lol. But I feel like those dolls were made more to be like fancy action figures vs dolls (so hair play isn't a thing) so it's kind of weird they used the same hair method for the Belles.

    That is why I am more into action figures. There are also bad ones, but generally the "model human" comes out pretty good. The only celebrity doll as such that I own is a Disney Store Bo Katan. But as that is the animated version, it works and she looks really good.
    I considered the Black Widow in black or white several times, but something just did not sit quite right with me. I think it is the general mismatch between the too large heads and the dainty fashion doll bodies.

      The WWE action figures for the women can be pretty hit and miss, especially back in the day. I get that she was sculpted to look like she was in motion, but Final Count Trish Stratus just looks super drunk 🤣

    Part two, please! I would like to see some celebrity dolls of the 1970's and 1980's, too. Even if you don't have the dolls themselves, photos of them from those time periods could be used instead. I had a Wonder Woman doll that looked nothing like Lynda Carter, a set of the original Charlie's Angels, and a Cheryl Ladd doll made by Mattel. I did not find them ugly, but for some reason, did not look exactly like these celebrities (3D scanning technology was not invented yet)

    IMO, if the celebrity doll isn’t made by Mattel, it’s usually not worth it. I remember as a kid thinking the Spice Girls Dolls were so cool and assumed Mattel made them, cause they were also sold in the Barbie aisle. Then when I saw them as an adult, I was put off by how harsh their faces looked and realized they were made by a different company. Same with the Britney Spears doll. They seem kind of cheap, with shorter arms and stubbier torsos with more angular high-heeled feet, as opposed to Barbie’s more graceful arches. But I’m assuming that’s because they can’t use Mattel’s patented bodies. Mattel’s face molds are very versatile. I remember the Heidi Klum doll looking very spot-on, and it only uses a Generation Girl head mold. The Brandy doll also looks very good (no surprise, it’s by Mattel).

    I have a strong contender for this list: the Dayanara Torres doll from 1994. For those unfamiliar, Dayanara Torres was Miss Universe 1993 and would later become an actress, singer, model and writer. The doll came with a music box that played some of her songs and also the dress that she wore when she won the Miss Universe crown. Again I want to reiterate that this woman was crowned the most beautiful on Earth and her doll was so ugly that my family constantly made fun of me for having her in my collection 💀

    Can you do another video like this, but showcasing good Celebrity dolls? There's one that comes to mind. They market their characters as action figures, but theu have rooted hair and real clothes and could be classified as dolls, but there's a company that put out a line of dolls that I think was called Asylum Ultimate Series. They made dolls of rock/metal singers that look absolutely stunning. I own their Rob Zombie doll and he is absolutely gorgeous!

    not on that scale, but one of the funniest things for me was walking into a popular toystore here in Poland and seeing dolls of polish youtubers. the line is called InfluHeroes and it's not the worst in quality (dolls have basic joints and the facemolds are simple in style, no creepy realism here), but it's very funny they exist because I've never heard of any of these people before

    I remember becoming a Mixer (Little Mix fan), around 2016-2017. When I'd seen they had dolls, I was excited. Since Jade was my favorite (seeing as we have the same skin tone, and she was the one that made me start liking them in the first place), I wanted to get her doll. As soon as I saw it, I internally went "Oh my god, what is that?!" and clicked off. Like, why is her skin grey, she's Arab for heck's sake. Jesy's having a slimmer build when at that time she was a tad chubby (and at that time was consistently belittled and shamed for not being as slim as the other 3), was also a war crime in my honest opinion. Leigh-Anne looks... nothing like herself, and Perrie... idk man. I know my girls, but THOSE were imposters. I'm just glad the Margot Robbie Barbie's and Elvira MH doll were done beautifully (Cassandra Peterson, Elvira, was behind the creative process).

    Nobody knows of the unspeakable horrors that were the B*Witched singing dolls from the late 90s or 2000. For those who don’t know, they were a short lived girl group from Ireland. They were even briefly featured in the DCOM Smart House. Anyway, my mom got me one of the dolls for Easter, I think. I forget her name, but she was the leader of the group, and good LORDT they did her so DIRTY. If you thought these dolls were horrendous, they pale in comparison to this line of dolls. Even as a child I thought the doll was terrifying. I felt bad for my mom, but I really don’t know what she thought when she bought this doll for me. My guess was that she knew I liked B*Witched, knew I liked the Britney Spears dolls, so she may have figured I would probably like this doll. Not to mention it was on sale, I’m sure 😅 take the Sporty Spice doll from the ugly Spice Girls doll line here, the Ashley Tisdale doll, and throw in the uncanny, manly Emma Watson doll, and you have this cursed relic from the past. Truly a crime against humanity and the girls from B*Witched

    I never understood the face sculpt versions of celebrity dolls instead of going the route that Mattel took with the Halle 'The Little Mermaid' dolls, it's so much better when you take some artistic liberties and go for the slightly unrealistic look. It's amazing how they can do an entire face sculpt and it'll look LESS like the actual person. The only celeb dollI owned as a kid was the Brandy one, other than that though, I never was into them because while I'd be excited about the concept, once I got in the store and saw them face to face, their ugliness turned me off so badly.

When it came time to pack up my Barbies cause I wasn’t playing with them anymore (I do still have them, they are waiting for me to have kids of my own!), I could not imagine totally giving up Sharpey. It was right around Christmas and my mom had knitted this clothes line of tiny Santa and Mrs. Claus outfits, so I convinced her to let me dress Sharpey in the Mrs. Claus outfit, and she remains a part of our Christmas decorations to this day

    i have a mego farrah fawcett doll from the 70s i found at goodwill once. i have.. very mixed feelings about her?? her head sculpt is clearly trying to go for realism and again i want to give them credit for trying..? it reminds me of the mona lisa though, as i can’t quite tell what she’s thinking. like, she was notoriously beautiful and had a fantastic smile but the doll, it looks anywhere between a fake half smile and an all out grimace. the doll has rooted lashes as well which like,, i mean i’ll give them credit for the effort i guess bc that would’ve taken a lot of work. to me i think the worst of it is the hands, she has longer nails that feel a lot more like claws honestly?? i’ve grown attached to her though, if i’m being completely honest. the one i have came with a dress from the cher dolls mego made that’s honestly gorgeous, it has an embroidered bird of paradise on it!and i feel like at the very least mego did cher at least a little better but like, i feel like with some tlc (and maybe a tiny bit of sandpaper) i can really get this farrah doll back into a nice spot 😅

    • @Ken-vk8pb
      @Ken-vk8pb ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Mego Farrah Fawcett doll is a good buy so long as you got her at a cheap price in used played with condition since the ones for sale on EBay that are still new in box or never removed from box usually have the melted joints at the shoulders sometimes and especially at the hip joints where there is a melting that occurs over time especially when they are stored in a hot and humid environment or room like an attic or a garage. They usually have melt mark stains on their outfits in the groin and back of hips area and their outfits are normally stuck and like glued to their bodies. Their joints can be stiff and locked from never being moved and posed despite their hair and heads being in clean new condition still. At least with buying one in used played with condition her joints have been moved and posed so you can still sometimes pose all or most of her joints. These doll's are almost 50 years old so their plastic and vinyl or rubber that they're made of is going to deteriorate over that length of time as expected. Did you buy her this year or had her a few years?

      @@celebrityguest.9530 You got a great deal on her then especially finding one at Goodwill. If you buy them online in used condition they are usually priced between $30 to $50 depending on condition but new in box is usually much higher priced at close to $100 or more.
