Just to add ; that I am blown away by your talent Chinchilla. Not only are you a technically brilliant vocalist, you have the innate ability to connect so strongly to the emotion of the subject matter, and project that emotion directly into the soul of the listener. I have been a singer songwriter ( I use the word " singer " with a huge degree of artistic licence lol ) since I was a rebellious teenager ( I am 62 years old now ) I have also been involved in promoting music most of my life. I mention this as I have been around musicians and singers for more than 45 years and you move me so very much with your ability to convey the true meaning of a song, with so much beautiful sensitivity and power. Your duets with Ren are " other worldly " THE greatest duet team I have ever witnessed. Thank you and much love to you. 🙏

His song with Chinchilla "How To Be Me" is the one about Ren's friend who committed suicide when they were 19. They sang and filmed the video on the bridge that he jumped off of. Unfortunately his body has never been found. That song is really heavy and it hits me hard because of how many of my friends and family I have lost to suicide.

I think Ren is so mindful of every detail that he might have purposefully sounded "nervous" when he was alone and then more solid when he had someone else to go through it with him???

Agreed, seeing as Ren is the composer, writer, singer, performer, and director of his music and videos I can only assume every detail is intentional.
definately. considering the context of the song I don't think "confidence" is what he wants to project here.
Every crack, wavering or quivering note is pure emotion, and what makes Ren amazing to listen to. He is addictive.

I thought that initially about Ren's vibrato, as well, but now that I've heard most of his music I've realized that he just has a unique vibrato. It's almost a rapid glottal stop.

Agreed on the imperfections. That's why I love the live performances. I grow tired of everyone sounding perfect, whatever that is, through filters and such.
Haven't seen a lot of guitarists talking about imperfection in Hi Ren either. I would dream of playing like that in a live take. Seen several from guitar teachers and pros they seem very impressed.
Just to be clear, especially in the world that we live in now, there is no such thing as perfection.

I think he did that weird little vibrato thing that made u think he was nervous on purpose and it sounded good in a bizarre way to me...they recorded this live but they could still have done many takes and he's sung that song a lot live so I don't know why he would be nervous.. also he's acting in those first few lines if you look closely at his facial expressions and eyes. it has something to do with the long entrance, finding the chair, guitar etc. i'm not exactly sure what he's trying to get acrossed but he's definitely trying.
I dont think anything is accidental in his songs and everything is done deliberatly. He breaks the mold and doesnt adhere to the rules of music. I dont think the song would have the impact it does if he sang perfect at the start. Watch his busking videos....he isnt shy and the boy can sing...really sing.

I agree. Ren calls himself an overthinker in his song Bitter Sweet Symphony so I also believe every note or move is deliberate. I think he is an uninhibited performer. There is no doubt his acting ability equals his musical ability.
Can’t wait for the trilogy! There’s a video called ‘The Tale of Jenny & Screech (full)’ which contains all 3 songs in the correct order.

So many people watch Violet’s tale first.. which kinda messes the story up a bit.
But it’s one that might really get you in the feels. It’s intense. But absolute brilliant!
This is correct. The Full version is the complete trilogy.
His songs I Shot The Sheriff/Road To Zion/HipHop, and Bongo Bong, with his band The Big Push are both a great showcase of his singing, without the heavy vibes. And the live How To Be Me with Chinchilla is exactly what you'd expect - incredible.
This isn't the song about his friend that died, that one is actually 'How To Be Me (live)'. This one is about his illnesses and big pharma.

I think the cracking and imperfections are there by design Or by choice. I mean either he can put them in or leave them out at will- some singers use cracks and breaks for emotion and can perfectly control them. Or, its a part of his natural voice that he is totally fine with- and thinks benefits his songs so makes no effort to hide it.
Remember he does these all live in one take so there is no post processing (beyond capturing several audio sources so the guitar can not have reverb etc) - and normally when we do we hear singers that are NOT post processed ? (i dont mean full on autotune necissarily- just touched up).
I feel sorry for people who think those little imperfections somehow make it worse.
p.s The guitar playing in HI Ren is 100% meant to be like that- he's a great guitarist if youve seen other stuff- he isnt just gonna make mistakes- the strange notes and disonances in Hi ren are PART of the performance and storytelling.

Having watched many , many MANY Ren videos, I'm pretty certain that the imperfections in playing, movements and singing are deliberate to generate the required emotional responses. His acting skills are very much on point, if you look, his nervousness coincides with his words about hoping he is different after taking a new pill, and how he implies that hes not fully convinced. excellent Reaction sir. There seems to be a new development of late following the Hi Ren video, more and more people are using it as a base for their interpretations, Mr Blackburger is my current favourite - Ren loves it. its well worth a look.

Great reaction! I lost my nephew 3 yrs ago, and this song is the perfect depiction of how it feels. You do forget how to be you, and these 2 together just pull the emotion out of you. It's like they are looking at each other in desperation. Like they are both begging the other to just hold on. It is so very intense! Like I said great reaction and much love from Texas❤
"How to be Me" is the song about Joe's suicide. This song is about his experience with being medicated/misdiagnosed during his journey with Lyme Disease (as well as his pre-existing Depression?).
Specifically this mentions Sertraline, which is the generic for Zoloft, a SSRI antidepressant.

This song is about getting used to the feeling that you have or lack there of when you take the pills that they gave you so you don’t feel how you would feel without the pills.
The song about losing his friend is also a chinchilla it’s called how to be me
No nervousness, he has a veritable cornucopia of styles of vibrato, and that’s one of them. It’s a crying style vibrato, and it’s on purpose.

Lovely reaction video. I really enjoyed your comments. I don't think Ren was / is particularly nervous though. I would suggest he deliberately evokes a sense of vulnerability, paralleling the sensitivity of the subject matter. The conviction grows as the song progresses and the comfort of someone else sharing the same experience symbolises the strength of realising we are never alone in our struggles ). I believe the opening section of the song is exactly as intended ( Ren is always very meticulous with his choices ) to provoke a feeling of trepidation in the listener ( his beautifully tender treatment of Elvis Presley's " Can't Help Falling In Love " is a great example of this kind of deliberately vulnerable approach and execution, as it really accentuates the mood, in my opinion ) Ren is the ultimate " Method Actor " - he takes himself to the emotional places he has experienced to get the very best out of his performances ) .... but I like that you picked up on it. I hope you continue to embrace, and enjoy, the music of this incredibly talented artist. I agree with you ; Ren's fan base will continue to grow as he is 100% genuine in his sensitivity towards all human beings .... and especially those who struggle with psychological trauma. the imperfection is these songs, is what triggers the emotional response. the rawness is intentional. even in this song chinchilla follows ren as an echo and is off pitch slightly to bring more to the song and then Ren stumbles on the second part to allow her to take the lead.
Chinchilla is amazing 👏 i can't understand how she isnt known, seen, heard worldwide. Her voice is beautiful and her style is kickass!

I have greatly enjoyed your reactions on the Ren roller coaster. I do agree that you will need to watch the trilogy. However, if you’re looking to bring it back up before hand, I suggest watching his song power or losing it before hand.

Beautiful Song. They do a duet "sexual healing" thats also incredible.
TH-cam won't let me edit my prior post, but with regard to showing emotion, I describe a lot of Ren's songs as "cathartically gutting". What I mean by that is that yes, they will get inside you and make you ugly cry, but that experience will heal something--at least a little.
Related to that is the fact that Ren is about connection--connecting with his fans, connecting his fans with each other, connecting to reactors...on and on. The ability for us to hold space for each other as we go through whatever deep reactions we have as well as being vulnerable to those reactions in ourselves is a huge lesson and a gift that I have never had from any artist before Ren, and I suspect it is unique to him.
Although tough to watch for people who have had trauma or mental illness, it is in the expressing of the feelings we hold onto that we are healed. I hope you can go off camera and just let it rip.

I good companion to this song that isn't as sad is "Diazepam" (spelling?). It's about the drug that made REN feel like a chalk outline.
Also, the "bury myself with a great big smile" has a sad double meaning. At face value, it's about pushing the feeling down and presenting a happier personna to those in your life. But it also means that ignoring what is happening to yourself and not letting others know about it is literally killing yourself (burying yourself).

hilarious to me that we've gotten to the point that the uniqueness of a live performance in singing, intonation, playing, etc. is distasteful to people today...I'm sorry, I'm sure Ren really struggled to decide whether to rip it live, or to post-produce, run real-time auto-tune, and click tracks. Ridiculous.
I believe that post-production/autotune/click tracks all have their uses. Polyphia, T-pain, and the endless amount of acapella groups on youtube come to mind. However, I still believe there is no replacement for raw undoctored emotion conveyed through a pure live recording.
@@parkinglotpanda I mostly meant to illustrate the absurd divide between generations regarding implementation of musical tools. For instance, Sebastian Bach gave Falling in Reverse/Ronnie Radke crap for needing tracks at shows (absurd), but conversely, people are upset when a raw live show isn't click-tracked or massively post-produced. Its a wild time to be a music fan.
by the way, both of whom (ren and Ronnie) are amazing musical creators.
