I still-hunt very slow; I stop, look, listen and feel the wind five to ten times as long as I move, sometimes only a few steps, never more than 5 and each step is planned and paused, I also won’t pass a tree in a single movement. I can’t get more than 200 yards in an hour. I’m an Oregonian and enjoyed this vid because the terrain, flora and fauna described are the same as where I hunt- mainly in the Trask unit in the Northern Coast Range. I also find using the same environmental combinations that Tom recommended offers the best opportunities. My favorites are riparian zones of low brush, maple and alder with scattered coniferous trees, draws converging into benches of a large basin; wet, but not too wet to make a swamp or lake, more like intermittent bogs a few inches deep, and all surrounded by reprod forestland for escape security. I anticipate other hunters and use their likely entry approaches as a factor in where I’ll set up my stand, they’re my unwitting drivers.
Wow! Tom is good. He's a mix of the top dogs- Eberhart, Hunting Beast (Dan) and "How to Hunt" -blacktails (Steve). He's saying some of the same things they say, but in his own way. A way that's in his own words, that he learned though trial and error. Seems like the real deal. You should have Steve from How to Hunt come on this pod cast. He's, I would say, an expert on blacktail hunting. I really like Steve's hunting app. And, if you don't want to hear about bigfoot, ask him not to talk about that topic. Tom had some great hunting information. Thanks
Many backcountry hunters know about Sasquatch but don't talk about it because of the cultural stigma ( jokes, ridicule and relationship breakdown ) or they simply don't understand their experience as it is a rare and strange creature with very little information on behavior or biology available. I know many men who have said " No such thing as Bigfoot, spent my entire life in the woods and never encountered it " but then I will ask them to tell me of " weird experiences " during their time in the empty spaces and they will then tell stories of rocks landing in their camps, hearing language they cant understand in the middle of the night, long siren like calls followed by loud pounding on trees. Like it or not there is a phenomena and the information should be shared to better understand what is happening, share the stories.
Hello. I'm interested in starting an archery program at the school where I teach. A couple of years ago, two other instructors and I looked at starting an archery club. The shop teacher proposed a project where students would learn to build self bows. A science teacher and I believed archery could be a powerful tool for inspiring interest in physics and mathematics. Our school district "risk assessment team" got back to us after several months with pages of necessary precautions. They didn't say no, but the expense of meeting their demands meant at least one year of students doing fund raising, with no archery equipment or shooting. We tabled the project.
I live in Arlington I usually get a forest pass from Hampton Lumber it cost like $300 a year gives you about 90000 acres to hunt behind the gates!! fish, hunt, berries and mushrooms and 2 cords of wood!! Good luck buddy welcome to Washington
Thick brush, alder bottoms or/and maple. Glass glass glass. You will see deer you never would have seen otherwise. Glassing like 60-80yds into the woods all around. Your neck will hate you, but your freezer will love you.
Great vid other than ignorant commentary about politics. People aren't voting based on fear, they're voting based on a different idea of the ideal society and people in cities should have a say over what happens in the rest of their state.
This season on the SW Washington coast has been frustrating. The all disappeared during shooting hours. This was great.
Thank you

I’ll look into it.
Appreciate the comment, I've spent time talking with John Eberhart about many topics, among others.

not too many people that know more about Columbia blacktail than Mr. Tom Ryle.
Agreed.
Great podcast I'm from Tennessee trying to get into blacktail hunting. Jus move to Everett you know any nice spot out by Arlington Thanks..
Thanks. Do you have onx? Great resource for finding small pockets of public to check out.
WDFW Hunt Planner Map is a good way to find huntable public land.
