A sad start to the day, Steve Harley has died age 73. Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel made a song "Sebastian" I was so much in love with this Song that I called my son Sebastian. When he was born I wrote "Somebody called me Sebastian"
Ik ben nu 60 en ik geniet ook lekker van deze muziek. Ik wil weer terug naar die tijd alles was zo anders en gebroederlijk kijk maar naar die beelden. Wat was het Oooo zo mooi..........
One of the greatest songs ever made, I sometimes forget this song and when I all of a sudden hear it again, it's like hearing it for the first time again and being overwhelmed by the beauty of it. Rip Steve!
Cockeny Rebel played in one small town,Banja Lyka, in ex Yugoslavia..how they came here at the peak of their popularity in 1975,nobody of us teenagers crazy for western music did not understand,it was like a present from the universe falling in our lap..still and often we remember this magical evening..so in this corner of the world placed on no one's path at that time happened Steve Harley..wherever he is we send the most tender embraces and memories.
First time a band gave me goose bumps was in June 1974 in East Croydon Greyhound. I was 17, the band was Cockney Rebel, the song was Sebastian. Ever since, Steve Harley has been one of my favourite musicians, although I had luck to see him live only once more, in May 1975 in Zagreb Sports Hall, Croatia. And now, never again 😢 Requiescat in pace, Stephen.
I was in kindergarden, in middle 80's in communist Bulgaria, when i remember how my mommy told me about how she listen to this song on a forbidden radio station over and over again. And i love the song too.
Sebastian, my very first 45 tour single ever. Wonderfull, just wonderfull. Three years ago, on the Summer Beach festival in Nieuwpoort (Belgium), I was lucky to see him the second (and last) time in my life. After him on the stage came the Simple Minds. Steve (°1951) told the public he knew the younger Jim Kerr (°1959) very well, actually he was one of his friends. I always will remember you, Steve. With Sebastian, you created a marvellous little juwel in the history of music . RIP 🥲
I discovered this song and Steve Harley about a decade ago, I was watching the movie Velvet Goldmine, and in one scene the character Bryan Slade is singing Sebastian - I had to find this song! Can’t believe I missed out on Steve Harley so many years, he was an amazing talent and this song is everything… RIP
This was released about three times on 45rpm trying to get a hit out of it and I remember an ad saying some songs are too good to be hits...this never was.
This happened to me when I was in the 5th year of school, soon to leave and was chucked out of maths for some reason I can't remember, so instead they let me have music which they didn't before as they had a letter from my previous school from the music teacher telling them not to let me have music, so I got lessons in the cupboard while the usual class of the 4th years was going on, I was a bit jealous because I could have done with having those lesson. I myself was learning to read music for the guitar. when I would get to the lesson While I was waiting would talk to one of the pupils and she would refer to me as Sebastian. I love the song apart from that, but only recently I found that it was actually one of their most earliest songs if not their first. I think when I heard it in the late 1970s or 80s some one else made it famous. It has always been one of my favourite songs.
Rest in peace Steve, the 70s were magic with you and lots more glam too. My best mate who was a huge fan of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band showed me the your LP wit Sebastian on it. I thought it was fantastic then and still do today, along with many more Steve Harley songs. 🙏🎼💜
Grüße mit dem Lied alle Taobrüder und Schwestern die damals die Zeit im Tao Stuttgart-West miterlebt haben, bis die Disco am 30.9.1989 für immer zumachte 😪😪
It’s about Oscar Wilde and his last few miserable months on the planet. Wilde was living in poverty and exile in a seedy Paris hotel. He asked people to call him Sebastian Melmoth. A beautifully sad song.
Vale Steve Harley (Steve Nice). A whole new generation is taking his death as a cue to discover there was so much more to him than Make me Smile. He lives on.
RIP Steve Harley, you will be missed.
