I've painted an aluminum engine cover before. Black. Then I sanded the raised machined ribs and engine lettering down to natural aluminum. It gave it a nice look. Similar to the raised silver vortec lettering on the stock black cover. It's not flawless but it's certainly half-assed and fast. Perfect for Goldie.
should have sprayed on GOLD, fully dry it. spray black, whip off black where gold is to show since it is highest areas, it's super easy to do this. Metal surfaces are even easier you just sand down till you hit metal leaving the silver on colour
As long as you're not hanging out in AutoZone parking lots and telling every passerby how your "special" intake/cover combo gives you 1000hp and free reving at every stoplight, Mustang and Camaro you see...you'll be fine.
I painted my Silverado valve covers wrinkle black and coil brackets Chevy orange and my engine cover which is like the red one you have I painted wrinkle black as well
I think we're related or something. Back when I got my 99 Stepside, I painted that same cover all black, re-did the lettering silver and the ribs painted red to kinda match the maroon-ish color of my truck. Great minds!

I like using interior paint on plastic cause it lays down even and doesn’t make it shine it makes it look like brand new plastic but I like your way of thinking I’ve never seen anyone restore engine cover love your channel !
When I did the top end on my wife's ls suburban I painted the valve covers and valley pan chevy orange and it looked awesome...then I got greedy and painted the alternator /power steering bracket orange and that was too much. I'll fix it someday...

I don't know if you'll ever revisit this tiddying up the engine bay and such but have you considered smoothing and painting the cover body color (with a nice clear coat over top) and just masking the ridges and letters leaving them black? Reverse of what you initially planned I guess.
Next time, spray the gold, clear it, and let it dry. Afterwards, spray the black and use a damp (paint thinner) to remove the black from the raised portiona once the black has flashed. 😋

How bout take that stupid piece of plastic off that beautiful ls get a carbureted intake and Edelbrock carb and stand back in awe of a mans motor...paints “engine cover” + 50whp...
Because that would be 3 steps backwards. Even if I got a good blow thru carb that worked well with the supercharger, daily driving it would be a hassle because in Michigan the weather changes so often that it would constantly need tuning. And it wouldn't get as good of mileage. Unless you're one of those guys that just doesn't want to take the time to learn EFI and has to stick with the carb, it doesn't make sense.

By law safety cats get a 15 minute break every hour and special respirators for paint work. They have a very strong union.

At 8:00 the pewter paint picked up the black paint because most spray paint is solvent based. So it dissolved what you didn't get with the thinner.

I've only seen it done with gloss black paint and I thought it looked weird. But, that's just my opinion

Just to do it kinda a pain in the ass but try sanding down the letters on red cover kinda clean it up a bit
If u wanna go back to factory easily just soak it in brake fluid. It will strip it withouthurting the plastic.

I’d put the square cover on the suburban and paint the red one and put in on Goldie.. I think the shapes would match the trucks better.
I like the boxy one more though. I actually REALLY don't like the shape of the round one. Idk why but it just makes me mad to look at it haha
