Back in 1976 when I was in my young 20's I was a line mechanic working at a Porsche / Audi dealership in So. Calif. The dealership sent me to Porsche school to get certified as a Porsche 930 mechanic. It's true, to change spark plugs or even service it the engine with transmission had to come out. I got to the point I could pull the engine and trans in about 1/2 hour. The major service was every 15000 miles. This almost always included a complete new clutch, reseal the cam plates and return tubes, sometimes chain tension because they ran so hot....Fun car, could hit almost 90 mph in second gear. The early ones did have an issue with the C.D.I. box. You step on the gas and off like a rocket then the C.D.I. box would shut off for about 2 seconds, just like turning off the key, then...Bam!.. the C.D.I. box would turn back on, you already had a full throttle with the turbo wound up and it would scare the hell out of you....Sorry about the long read, it just brought back some memories of a different time....
Thank you so much to the owner of that Porsche 930 for keeping it safe! What an awesome bar find! We may never see something like that ever again, a magic moment in time.
Put in a battery, a new fuel tank, fuel, fuel lines and pump and turn the key. It will start. Then drain and refill all the fluids, send the brake callipers off for reconditioning and while they are off replace the clutch and brake masters and all the soft brake hoses. Once done, see if the clutch is free. If it is this car will run and drive.
Some added details: The flares on the Corvette were common mods on SCCA and IMSA Corvette's in the 70's when SCCA first allowed fender flares starting in 1973. I remember seeing them on C2 Corvette's as a kid in the 70's at tracks across the Midwest. It would not surprise me to learn the owner autocrossed the Corvette in era. The Ford Four Cam is 265 cubic inches per Indy rules of that era. The exhaust exits in the vee making for the bundle of snakes exhaust that was so wild for its time in the late 60's. The tank on the left side of the Indy Car is the dry sump oil tank not a fuel tank. The large diameter hose entering the top rear of the tank is the return oil line from the dry sump pump. By this time external fuel tanks had gone away as Indy had placed a limit on how much fuel cars could carry. The cars in era had tanks inside the monocoque running the length of the tub on both sides of the driver. It was still a massive amount of fuel! The Lotus twin cam is based on the original Ford 1500 cc engine used in the Cortina. It had a shorter stroke which allowed for higher revs when bored out to 1600 cc for the Twin Cam. The Cosworth BD series engines also used the 1500 as their basis for the short stroke, sleeved from as tiny as 1100 cc up to 2000 cc. The Ford Kent was 1600 cc, used in later Cortina's and the basis for Formula Ford engines since 1967. The Lotus Elan, with its twin side draft Weber's and knock off wheels (instead of the more common 4 lug wheels) is an early car for sure. I don't know how rare (or not) knock offs were on early cars. And lastly since all the cars were parked in the mid 90's except for the Lotus I wonder if the poor soul fought health issues for the past 30 plus years which kept him from his toys. Unlike so many hoarders these cars weren't cast aside like so many so called enthusiasts who are instead just hoarders that don't ever finish projects or care for their cars, buildings, etc.
The ‘89 930 is the one and only year with the 5-speed. I have a black on black ‘89. What a gem. With a detail and mild restoration he’s sitting on 150-200k.
Great little collection. A GMC Cyclone and a 930 Turbo, sounds like the perfect driveway duo when living in the 90s. I like that you guys added the in-depth look at the 930 so we learn a little bit more about the actual condition instead of just glancing it over.
As a UK petrol head loving your Barn finds, please salute the guy for his lovely collection, I've just lost a close petrolhead friend who had one of those lotus which really got to me. Hope to see all these running again.
Thank You to this gentleman for allowing Tom and his crew to discover what treasures were hidden inside his garages. I've been watching BFH since the beginning and this is one of the best episodes l've ever seen and enjoyed. Thank You again to the gentleman who allowed you to record the contents of his collection. I wish him well for the time he had left.
Thx you Tom and thx to the owner for allowing you and your crew to show us this magnificent collect of drivers, this man is a true car enthusiast , hot rodder 👍
@@milkymarssnickers Not sure where you got 0-60 numbers for the 930 but you're over a second off. And those numbers are best case scenario, real world drag racing Syclone would win more often than not since it's AWD and auto. The videos I've seen of the 930s they can barely crack the 14 second 1/4 mile. Either way, neither was a slouch for the time
@@racequad9 You are right - i mistyped that. Porsche specs state 4.3s for the 1986 930. The Syclone performance is just out of the world - and its a stock "truck".
@@milkymarssnickers it would be awesome to own one for sure. Have you seen the video of the Japanese show of a Typhoon beating an NSX and just barely losing to a supra? It's an old video but that should show how fast the cyclones are because the syclone is over 0.5 second faster than the typhoon in the 1/4 mile lol
oh boy - that 930, just cleaned and serviced as a survivor driver! That's the absolute Dream! Not too perfect to be used! Hope it will find a great home !
Nice little collection. My two favorites of this collection would be the 930 and the syclone. Thanks to you for showing them and to the owner for allowing them to be shown.
Fun to see that grease pit that the Porsche sat over. That was the old school way of working on the bottom of cars before two and four post lifts were invented. You always had to have a sump pump in them so they wouldn't turn into swimming pools on you. A friend's dad had a pit in his garage and we always had to make sure it was pumped out before we needed to use it. Dislocated my shoulder once back in the early 70's hopping out instead of using the steps.
Sad to see comments criticizing the owner of these cars. Probably from people who haven't fought illness and hoped to recover and continue to enjoy their cars. Never judge someone, you have no idea the hell they may be walking thru. In other words grow up
This is sooo true. Just bought an Alpina B7 Turbo/1 from Munich last January. The first owner bought it new in 1985 and kept it until his death at 83 years old, in 2018..His sons told me he got a chronic disease in 2002 and only managed to drive it once a year to the Alpina factory for regular oil service and back. He refused to sell it while alive. Respect. I feel proud to be the ''caretaker'' and his memory is present in the car.
And to be incredibly fair to the owner, it looks like he bought cars, even new, and enjoyed them and held onto them. Challenges happens. Perhaps he had plans to get them back on the road. This type of owner is VASTLY different than the type of guy who constantly acquires project after project after project - and never finishes any of them.
I never knew, I grew up in amagansett . I've been to bridgehamton race way . I saw sweed savage race one of Dan gurney's car the week before he was killed in a accident on track. You've brought back so many memories from this video . Thank you

Brilliant Tom. Where I live in the UK, only 400 metres from my home is a Lotus Elan tucked away in the owners small single garage, covered in rubbish and boxes. I've never seen it but his neighbour 3 doors down the road says it's been there years.
With all respect. A real car enthusiast will never leave such cars in a barn unloved and covered with junk. The Porsche deserves an owner that really cares. 😢😢😢
Tom - That 930 Turbo is something else - I agree it would be great to take some snow foam, a jet wash and a bucket and get one of these cleaned up. Having said that remember what happened that time you buffed the wing on that red wagon!!
What an awesome collection! I'd love to help clean out that garage just to get a look at those cars in person! As an '86 baby I always have a soft spot for that Gen 930 (not that I'll ever be able to afford one, haha). And I agree... I love detailing cars and I'd love to give that one a good wash and detail! Working on a Typhoon

What a collection this is!!
Love that series. Hopefully he found out what happened to it.

That 930 is a gem. And the Indy style Ford Twin cam would be amazing to hear roar to life again.
