I like to carry Ariat Skyline waterproof shoes for hiking and around camp. These shoes are designed for trail riders (horsemen) but are light enough and they have soft leather siding that protects the feet. The Farmland and Terriane models have a bit higher top, but, I find the low tops are comfortable and sufficient and serve me well in many situations. Ariats don't add much weight and are extremely comfortable. Whatever you use for hiking, including the Ariats, go with waterproof models. If you hike in wet grass, any shoe will become miserable in short order. Happy trails. Robert

On my planned ride/hike days I carry my hiking shoes on the back of the bike and change into them. It is 1000 times more enjoyable than wearing the boots. It looks like you have an empty rack, perfect place to carry your shoes.
When you revealed your new bike choice, I was slightly disappointed. Since then, I've been checking into the 390 Adventure and have come to the conclusion that you may have made a brilliant decision. I may be getting one myself! I'm just over the hills from you in Crescent City.

I'm recovering well from my injuries. An hope to start riding again in the spring. I'll definitely be getting better armor in the future. Really enjoy your videos. yep I have been doing ride&climb day trips with my son. We actually change out of bike gear into mountain climbing gear and summit local class 5 mountains. We don't do overnight hike/climbs because we don't want to spend the night on the mountain but it can get to 8 hours of hiking / climbing. My bike has 3 lockable panniers plus I do the same thing about locking my jacket and helmet to the bike rather then in the panniers. So you can do it even on a day ride but it takes a bit of planning. The rewards are stunning views that you only get when you summit it (flying the drone up instead is cheating :) rsm8

Great video thank you! I’ve a similar setup on my CB500X for bike & hike here in New England. I use a designated helmet lock. I mounted to my crash bars and a Mosko cable lock for the jacket. The cable lock is probably not as secure as your hefty bike lock method but it is light weight. I also have the Forma boots. I think the most I’ve hiked in them is about a 2 mile loop. In summer, I was thinking of using my Chacos sandals but then how to secure the boots? Maybe also with cable lock through the buckles but not the best.
Very jealous of your high temperatures and sunny weather as getting quite cold here in the UK now. Using a piece of wood on a length of cord to increase the side stand footprint made me laugh. I’ve been using a similar set up for 20+ years, but with a piece of thick checker plate rather than wood. Whenever I use it off road my pals always shout “Weigh the anchor” as we’re about to leave😂. Hope you can get some more rides in before winter comes, that is if you have winter in Oregon
I get the footprint, but what is the string for? I mean, you have to get off the bike and place it under the stand, so why not reverse the procedure when leaving?

Lower the sidestand and kick the piece of wood under the stand, then get off the bike. When it's time to leave get on the bike, take the weight off the sidestand, recover the wood, store it in the tankbag,fold up the stand, job done. Been using this system for years and has been crucial with heavy bikes(Honda Pan European, BMW GS1150etc), on soft ground.
I’m also like to “bike to hike” and the gear is definitely a struggle. I’d like to get a top box and/or panniers to store things. I don’t think I could hike in my motorcycle boots 😮 Love the KTM! I’ve got a 390 Duke but I’ve got my eye on the adventure version. I often find myself on questionable roads! Great video!

Hi Bruce, nice adventure and beautiful area your riding. Quick question comparing the 390 to the Tenere. Does the Tenere give you a much smoother ride on the pavement and gravel roads? Does it soak up the bumps better? Im thinking about buying the Tenere even though Im not crazy about the top heaviness. I would be doing the aame riding your doing and I did ride the Tenere and thought the ergonomics were great.
The Tenere 700 is a great machine. Suspension is adjustable and it is smooth riding on the pavement and gravel roads. I was not confident riding it alone on more challenging off-pavement roads - it is top heavy and difficult to pick up when dropped.
Good to see you out on the 390. I've been near San Diego, headed back to Gold Beach after Christmas. Is that your service light on?. I couldn't get mine to reset after my first oil change. I made a video of the reset procedure at campingwithradios. Ride Safe.
Bears messing with the pack or bears as a 'hazard' ? Unless you have food in the pack bears probably wouldn't mess with it... especially bears 'out in the woods' not campground bears. Hazard ? Black bears usually don't pose a threat to humans... aside from sows with young cubs, usually they will threaten and bluff you into moving away. Grizzly bears... now that's another story.
I occasionally see bears when hiking in the mountains where I live, but they are not aggressive and not even curious. They always wonder off away - as long as you stay your distance as well. A larger threat would be mountain lions that occasionally attack hikers - very rare though.

I just got some Klim boots that use the BOA lace system. Very comfortable, I can hike with them no problem.

And here in Bend we’ve got blue skies and I took a short hike as well. I did wake up to 19 degree (F) temps so a bit too chilly to ride.

Yep, my mates and I use crushed beer or soda cans, light and easily replaced. Fit in jacket pocket.

Yep. That's the procedure. The string is needed to recover the wood piece after mounting the bike.
