Bash Plate or Trash Plate?

  • The KTM 390 Adventure motorcycle comes with a plastic bash or skid plate. This skid plate attaches to the engine and not to the motorcycle frame. It can deflect small stones, but larger rocks, ruts, or logs could push the force of impact directly onto the engine, potentially causing damage.
I looked for aftermarket bash/skid plate for the KTM 390 Adventure that would be more reliable while riding off-pavement, and here is what I bought for my bike.

I removed the aluminum plate from my WR250R and installed a polymer bash plate from Moose Racing. Every bit as sturdy as the aluminum one, and much lighter. Biggest advantage is the lack of noise associated with the polymer material. It is a game changer for me as that reflective noise started to wear on me. Not sure if they make one for your KTM.

Great to see how well you can bend your knee! Pls consider using a soft rubber mat when doing jobs like that(65 year old plumber here). I like how relaxed you are on your videos. A great advantage of being a senior: just being content with one’s lot and nothing to prove.

I use sound deadening that is used for firewalls on cars. Smells for a while, but didn't burst into flames, so all good. Does a good job of deadening the sound.

Very useful video. Thanks! I am in CO and we had a blizzard a few days ago and have crap weather right now, but I am itching to get the riding season going.

If you want to try that new plate out up on FR3730 (the one at the end of S. Fork of Little Butte Cr. Rd.) I’ve been up there clearing trees out of the road so it’s clear to FR37 now. Maybe stop for lunch at Fish Lake Resort or Lake Of The Woods for a break. I was just up there today with my pups. Also saw they permanently closed the alternate road to Mt. McLoughlin Trailhead/Four-mile Lake that’s just past summit sno-park on 140! I really liked that road too!

Looks good Bruce, I have the T-Rex, and it did come with instructions. I partly bought it to support our Texas businesses, but realized when I opened it, that it was actually made in Vietnam. I did have to purchase a separate plate for the stator as well as the T-Rex does not extend out past the stator on the left side, which is a negative for it. It also uses the same mount system on the right rear side of the bike as yours and I had to use a flexible Allen wrench to get it tightened, it isn't the best set up. I do think that both the Black Dog and T-Rex have a more robust mounting setup for the front, but I think that even if you took a hard hit, your plate would do it's job, but may bend the mounting arms. I have had a few very hard hits with my T-Rex without anything more than scratches, so I feel more confident in it than when it was new. The T-Rex does have an opening for the filter port, but you still have to take the plate off anyway to get to the filter on the front of the motor. It is not really an issue, just four bolts, and I assume the same for yours. At the end of the day, almost anything is better than the OEM, which is really a joke. Thanks for sharing.

I like it ! but the support brackets looked kind'a wimpy to me ! ....
I knew you were going to say it's noisier ! all that metal really does amplify the sound !
looks like your getting around real good after the knee surgery ! that's great !
Hang in there Neighbor ! keep the shiny side up and the dirty side down !
    and Ride safe !
edit: I would definitely add a big hole so you can change the oil.... other wise you'll put off the oil change because it takes so long to do ! and KTM's definitely need frequent oil changes !
I liked the T7... but this bike is alot better ! the weight alone would be a selling point to me !
that is why I got the XR650L it was so much lighter than anything else out there ! once I got it lowered it was a very rideable machine.... before that it was a joke cuz I'm short ! LOL

Another great video. Glad to see you are enjoying the KTM, seems like its a better fit for you over the Tenere, although I am still loving my Tenere. Happy adventuring :-)

I wonder if you fit some firm foam pieces in between the engine and plate to reduce the vibration noise. Probably wouldn't take much.

A good thing about the foam is that it prevents mud and rocks from accumulating between the plate and the engine as well.
