I had one do that , it was NOT caused by tyres , but fortunately it was on tenner each tyres so I never wasted two hundred quid , second hand tyres are not a problem , people selling / buying bad ones is a problem , I used to do 3day camp for mainly female but some male customers in summer , all eager to learn each service thier own car under supervision , then discuss what we did around campfire in the eve , I did this prior to retirement , but am still in semi ret mode , I still get asked to do this , now for customers kids and grandchildren , maybe end of June if weather good may run one more ,

If that's what you think then it seems that you are unfamiliar with doing something for the greater good. All the traffic on the road making it take an hour just to get to work must give you some idea of how many people drive. Now, given how expensive cars are to run, a high percentage of this large number must be relying on part-worn tyres. I even used part-worn tyres after picking up two flat tyres thanks to a big pothole. Two weeks later one went flat. When me and my dad were changing it as a policeman surpervised (the officer said his presence was necessary because it happened on a busy dual carriageway at rush hour) , I noticed the tyre that went flat had a crack on the wall. After having seen this, I consider myself lucky it didn't turn as ugly as it could have.

Nothing wrong with part worn tyres, we all drive on them every day. Often a car will be scrapped with a good set of tyres on it.

You are absolutely correct. I had a tire that was irreparably damaged a few months ago. Because I spend to much time on the road, sometimes as much as 300 miles away from home, I did not want 3 tires with half thread, and 1 new one. So I bought a set of 4 new ones, the tire shop that changed the tires kept my 3 old ones to sell to someone else. The 3 they kept had half thread remaining.

The reason that these tyres then go on to cause a problem is that these girls then drive like it's a rally, but cant deal with the skid. If you are a woman who checks your tyre pressure regularly please ignore this.

Whenever you buy a car you are buying 4 PART WORN TYRES! Each day people buy used cars. Are we all risking our lives by doing so?? Also consider that every time you sit in your car you are driving at least partly worn tyres. Should we all stop driving? How about this fact - when you buy part worn tyres you can personally inspect them inside and out and also have it looked over by a professional. Such assurances are totally absent when you buy a car privately or second hand. Even main dealerships do not remove each tyre and inspect it on their second hand cars. Thus logically we are all using part worn tyres equally. But those who have purchased part worn tyres know theirs have been checked over by a professional.
I buy brand new online though ;-) it's worth it if you plan on driving the tyre to the end of its life. Extra tread means extra life for a tyre

+ you get more comfortable ride because of the higher sidewall of the tire

Some people don't realise that once you increase your wheel size you increase the weight (also having the weight further from the hub worsens things). Not only bad for fuel consumption but also handling. Ultra low profile tyres have a smaller footprint even if they are wider than the originals because they don't squash out like tyres with decent side wall. No squash means they sit higher increasing the cars centre of gravity. Lots to think of if you want to do it right, the biggest wheel and lowest profile tyre will simply slow you down, burn more fuel, give an uncomfortable jittery ride and reduce handling ability... But when your 16 none of that matters.

Of course the part worn have less grip in the wet, they have less tread.

When I lived in England, forty years ago, I bought Re-Mould tyres one at a time. Never heard of part worn tyres.

i have a little fact here people might not know but the size tyre your car comes with isn't always the best size for your car and some times is way more expensive than the next size up or down. car manufacturers put odd sizes on cars because they have deals with tyre brands and want you to buy the specific tyre. for example there is a size 275/65/17, 265/65/17 and 265/70r17, all these sizes are so similar that the average person could not tell the difference but they are all different prices. it is like this with every type and size of tyre

Simple answer - lower the price of new tyres and ban all re-treads and part worns from sale in the UK.

I’ve bought second hand tyres all my life, never had a single problem. But you should always quickly check the tyre thread and condition before purchase for peace of mind.

Im an ex tyre fitter, done em all, car ,commercial, agricultural, plant, blah blah, I use pre owned tyres too, I do a visual on tyre before it's fitted, and afterwards, check for cuts, bulges ,etc. Also you can buy a brand new tyre, drive over glass, or bash a kerb ,and ruin your tyre in minutes. New or second hand, the road doesn't discriminate. And yes it's true, sometimes care are scrapped after new tyres were fitted, MOT failures, or fleet cars, where the driver simply wants brand new tyres fitted, seen it many times in the trade. A new tyre has around 8 millimetres of tread, I've seen em changed with 5-6 mm remaining, so they're good value second hand.
