Some of the stories I heard about Groves on the amateur circuit were great. The guys he was bashing up. But he always had this need to have a tear up. Cost him against Eamon O'Kane. But he did very well in that fight too. Criminal he never went to the olympics

@Jimbo Jones First stoppage was a bit early - maybe. But the second wasn't. Froch was murdering him. Both were decent local fighters. Neither was Calzaghe class. Joe would have blasted them both. Groves would have lost in the first fight later. And he lost the second one big time.

Poised, agile, fantastic ringmanship, cracking feet and range, boxed to orders.. Watching a young George draw a shot and counter never gets tiring, I don't think he'll ever get the recognition he deserves, perhaps fairly given the record. But in terms of temperament and all round attributes, George is one of the best quality boxers this country has produced. IMO he represents as pure an example of a quality British amateur pedegree you could find.
Any aspiring young boxers would do well to study George.

This is probably the best assessment of George Groves I can think of. There’s a certain magic to him in his younger years that he wasn’t quite able to recapture once he went past his physical peak at 25. His career really was one of so many ‘what ifs’ the people who know George Groves will always know how special he was though.

@1878EFC2008 , nah, those two cards which had it 76-75 were a joke. Groves won at least 5 of the completed 8 rounds if you're being as kind as you can to Froch, but more likely 6. 77-74 bare minimum. Poor judging, poor stoppage.

Hear groves sounding clear....he was sounding a bit punchy for a while....he’s clearly not been in the the gym for a while and that’s the way it should be.

God I remember how frustrated I was at this stoppage...the wrong decision by a country mile, who knows 2 minutes later Froch may have won or Groves may have..we will never know, all I know is it was painfully obvious a wrong call at that moment in time and Froch was lucky Groves switched off in the rematch and landed that shot (full credit for the punch by the way) I think deep down Froch knows he got away with one in reality and having 2 wins over George but credit due to Froch for the heart and grit he had in his career for still even being in there to get the stoppage. Shame we couldn't have had a trilogy somehow

I think Froch took Groves far too lightly in the first fight, he thought he could just bomb him out of there and it would be easy. Groves fought brilliantly that night and the stoppage was very controversial. But in the second fight, Froch knew what he was up against and it went exactly the way he planned it. Froch was a flawed fighter no doubt, but he had a granite chin and despite leading with his face most of the time, he somehow managed to stay upright long enough to land his own power shots towards the end. This rivalry was reminiscent of the good old days of Ewbank/Benn or Haggler/Hernes.

That controversial decision in the first fight made both of them decent money in the second. It worked well for them both in a way. Groves was clearly winning but Froch was on his way back and is notorious for stamina and comebacks. I doubt the rematch would've been anywhere near as big without that ref decision.

That’s a cynical bit of editing at 10:15 - Groves says Froch threw several shots that didn’t really land; immediately cut to footage showing that yes, they did.
