My Switch Finally Died...Nintendo...We NEED This Feature!

  • NYKO has reached out to me to replace my Switch and attempt to get save data from the system. While I appreciate the gesture I would rather hold onto my Switch for now just in case a breakthrough is eventually made. Thanks to NYKO for reaching out.
    So after a year of beating up my Switch, it finally gave out on me after the 5.0.0 update and using a third party dock. While it's tough to tell how connected the update and bricking is, others are starting to have similar issues online since the update with similar cases popping up online. Nintendo needs to come up with a solution for save data back ups, it's been a year and at this point it's time to fix a leering problem.

      ducus10000 - I've owned a Switch since day 1 and haven't broken a single Joy-con latch. They're maybe a little bit looser than they were a year ago, but not enough where I can say for sure. How roughly are you treating your Switch to keep breaking them?! Either way, you can buy 3rd party metal latches to replace the plastic ones.

    • @OriginalBoondocksXVIII
      @OriginalBoondocksXVIII 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      See, but the thing is; third party docks aren't the only reason a Switch ever breaks or gets messed up. The dock and the Switch itself even are minor pieces of the grander issue.
      All it takes to replace a Switch at this point is having the money available. There's very likely NOTHING that he can do to get those 120+ hours in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 back without having to reinvest that same amount of time.
      That's ridiculous in 2018.
      I've had my Switch since mid-January and I don't think I've collectively put 120 of playtime on the system much less on any one game; I couldn't imagine having to do it all over again.

    • @Cyber_Akuma
      @Cyber_Akuma 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The fact that they were working fine until the 5.0 update heavily points towards Nintendo intentionally doing something to break 3rd party docks, not because their own is somehow better made.

    • @Cyber_Akuma
      @Cyber_Akuma 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ajay Kundlas No they weren't, there isn't even any technical reason that they should since USB-C charging is a standard, the fact that all these reports cropped up with Update 5.0 should clue you in that it's not just the dock's fault.

    • @Cyber_Akuma
      @Cyber_Akuma 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, USB-C video out is standard too, I got an adapter to output video from my USB-C phone. And I already stated that this only recently became an issue with Update 5.0, and not just with Nyko. I also know from actual background in this field that there is no way these standards could possibly "brick" a device like this by accident, the firmware itself did something.

      Eagleye42 00 I wasn't saying cloud save isn't a good idea, it is. Nor am I saying he was raging at Nintendo or Nyko. I'm saying that in this instance, the loss of saves was completely avoidable and he ignored loud warnings from all sides and as a result the whole situation feels kinda silly.

    • @Nuvendil
      @Nuvendil 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      dwaatwood You know, if you read the comment directly above yours you would see I acknowledged that. But my point was this situation is silly cause it was completely avoidable. Cloud saves are needed for accidents and people who maybe buy a new limited edition or who upgrade to a new revision. Not people who ignore a cacophony of alarm bells and warnings and get their system predictably broken.

    • @Nuvendil

      For example on Steam they save files on the computer but they back up to save files online. That way if your computer dies you can redownload the save files along with the game later on a new computer.
      While you're playing you access the locally saved file on your computer and then when you close the game it syncs, saving it to online if you're online at the time and have set that option to do so.
      You're never loading the save file from online to start a play session. That's just stupid.
      Why are there so many of you who think you load everything from online when using a cloud based storage medium? Idiots, all of you.
      You can have a local copy and the cloud backup too.
      As another example that isn't Steam... I have a whole bunch of music on a MicroSD card on my phone. I also happen to have uploaded a lot of that to my Google Drive account meaning they are backed up on the cloud... Guess what I don't have to do when I want to play the music?
      Go online.
      Having a cloud save of my music doesn't mean I now can only play that music from online.
      Making an online duplication of your file does not equal deleting the local file which is being used to make a backup.
      Have I said it in enough different ways for it to get through your thick skulls yet?

    I agree, I had to return my switch that had a warrenty and I lost 100+ hours of Zelda, 100+ splatoon 2 30-40 hours on arms and 750 moons on Mario. We need a cloud save option when Nintendo releases online service. All this happened on the 1 year anniversary of the switch launch. And now with my new switch, I need to get a new joy-con, my right joy-con doesn't want to charge no matter what I try to do to fix it.

    It's fist time i'm on your channel, i'm from Brazi and also have a switch. i have two comments:
    1 - i'm really happy when i hear depoiment and honesty about not accepting a new device from the dock company... THAT's what makes USA different than others! People there don't like to take advantage of others if they did the wrong thing... If the same situation occours here, in Brazil, the user would ask a heavy reimbursement or would accept without doubt the new device! Congratulations for your decision!
    2 - I'm really surprised about the savings! I thought Nintendo was using their cloud to save the data from the device! It's a joke what they are doing, confining all the saves to a specific device! Not good... I hope they fix it soon..

    @Spawn Wave.. I had the EXACT same problem with mine! I thought my Nintendo Switch was fried like your seems to be once i used a Nyko charge cable. The unit would start up with the Nintendo logo then the drained battery sign would come on for a second or two.. this kept happening over and over again like you have depicted. I called Nintendo to set up a repair, but I wanted to give it one last try before I sent back my system to be either recovered or replaced which no Switch owner wants.. to possibly lose all those hours of game play gmab! So I ended up using my Nintendo branded brick AC adapter again.. it did the same thing where it booted up with the Nintendo logo then went to the drained batter sign again, but this time there was a charge symbol next to the drained battery. 5 minutes later I was back up and running again with the battery charging normally!! I know this sounds a little obvious, but have you tried using a Nintendo issued power supply since the boot issue?

  • @laggingdaze
    @laggingdaze 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Because of the background update to its software infrastructure, I bet it checks the port for a foreign input and output so that the Switch completely shuts down anything that might try to enter it. Unless you are using the official dock, the chances of the Switch bricking is higher. It might be that Nintendo did not think to check third-party docks but, if Nintendo thought that people could abuse a third party dock(maybe to be tricked as a different input device) to enter into the Switch, it may just be a move to try and protect it. Also, on a side note, the online service is probably going to cloud-saves but I can understand the frustration of it not coming sooner but I feel like Nintendo could’ve lost a bunch of sales and positivity on the Switch if the bad press on the online service grew if they kept the online service the way they did back then. I don’t know if a year was too long to address the issues but I hope they come in clutch later this year with the service, seeing that there may be 20 million Switches out by that time.

    I had a similar problem out of the Nyko dock. After the update to 5.0 I had a variant of this problem where the switch would still function in handheld mode and charge on my phone's usb-c charger but not any of the chargers or docks intended for the switch. Under normal circumstances the switch will not allow you to transfer the Data to another switch unless it detects the official charger. Contacted Nyko and Nintendo neither of them could guarantee that they could save my data. An IT buddy and I messed with it until he found a loop hole of sorts. As long as the switch is charged to 100% it doesnt expect the charger to be plugged in. So thankfully with the system off, I was able to charge the system to 100%, power it up and race to the transfer process before the indicator dropped to 99% and was able to transfer my user data to another switch. I did lose all of my screen shots but that's minor in comparison to the thought of losing my nearly complete Odyssey save. I know this doesnt apply to the exact situation in the video but maybe someone having similar problems could benefit.
    Side note: Nyko has been very understanding and helpful of the situation and has done everything they can to make it right. Nintendo was also receptive to the problem and my switch is there now hopefully being repaired.

Shoot on my Xbox it's practically seamless, don't even have to do anything it just automatically syncs all your saves, which comes in handy for me because I've had like 4 Ones. Can even transfer from 360 to One on BC games! It's pretty neat to play a save you had 10 years ago and thought would never play again. Ps4 is ok, but limited, and you gotta be careful that you download your old save in the cloud before it gets overwritten by a new one with nothing in it from your new system. I lost a few this way, it sucked. At least it's there though. Nintendo really needs to implement cloud saves, it's just something every modern device does; syncing your profile between devices. They're really having a hard time breaking away from the old way of having everything tied to one system. I hope it really is coming in Sept. like you said, but it really should have been a feature long ago.

      2071Johnny but why do they have to end these services? Sony and MS didn't close PSN and XBL when they released new hardware. Hell MS has gone 3 generations with the same service. They need to create a modern online infrastructure and stick with it. They should have done this long ago, with the Wii U and 3ds at the latest. Hopefully what they're rolling out in September is a step in the right direction! Hard backups are what they need at the bare minimum of course, but come on... cloud saves are not cutting edge tech. No reason not to have it included with their upcoming paid service.

    Just curious where did you get that shirt you have on I love it and I want one? Also have they fixed that back up problem yet because I play pokemon and want a way to back it up so I do not loose my shiny pokemon? I look and cloud saves sounds like my best bet but not sure got any advice?

    Thank you for sharing. I'm sorry about your Switch though. However, since we're talking about docks. What about third-party cables and chargers? Are they safe? Currently I'm just using an iPad charger and sometimes a 'Pineng' power brick with some charging cable I bought.

    This is why I use the standard dock, I’m one who actually likes the dock for what it is, but I’ve noticed, these third party docks that are said to be so much better than Nintendo’s are failing, cheap, or possibly dangerous to the switch console

      3rd party battery packs won't brick your system guys. I reckon it's the chips in the third party docks, I bet the updates thinks those docks are hacking devices. Battery banks only give 1amp to 2.4amps at 5 volts. Barely enough to brick the unit.

    Too bad Nintendo doesn't have a boot partition similar to a Mac that if the OS crashes hard, you can hold down hot button combination when powering on and it gives you the option to re-install the OS over the internet. They should also have a way to protect save data no matter what.

    • @lpsoldin3162
      @lpsoldin3162 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Screw that. Most PCs come with a secondary BIOS so all you have to do is press a button on your motherboard and automatically copy over a factory default version of your OS to the main BIOS install, solving any bricking problems. No internet required to solve the issue that way, and you can install a newer version of the BIOS later even if you download the BIOS elsewhere and install it offline.

      mjmonjure PS4 has this feature, hold down power button to access safe mode. Then you can redownload update via Internet or install whole OS again via USB thumb drive. And do other things too like reset setting etc

    • @squidgrill
      @squidgrill 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The switch does have a “safe mode” but I don’t think it would work in this particular situation since I believe it requires the OS to somewhat work.

    Just from my time repairing tablet devices, I know that whether the battery is charging or not is usually a low level software layer control. This means that if this software was damaged in any way that it could be preventing the battery from charging, even if the battery is in good shape (most likely the battery is fine.) Even some newer laptops charging controls are embedded in the UEFI.
    I'm not sure of Nintendo's OS design, so I don't know if its a low level (below OS) or an actual process in the OS itself. There is a way to put the switch in Maintenance Mode by starting the console with both volume buttons held down with the power button...from what I understand from there you can re-initialize the console and do so without wiping your data...

    Hmm, you checked with a multimeter? Did you check all data lines for the cpu/smc (assuming it has an smc)? There may be a blwon resistor/capacitor/diode that is causing a data line to be drawn high/low, and causing a reset / interrupt.
    If you have a new switch, I would use it to check all lines, as well as getting a cheap oscilloscope and seeing data communication on data lines. I believe you can find schematics of the switch online, and could identify the problem component.

    This just happened to my daughter's switch. She's only ever used the cord and port that came with the switch and my cell phone charger while in the car. I'll be watching for an update on a miraculous recovery. I'm tempted to send it in, but I'd hate for her progress to get wiped. Also, thanks for the video on how to easily replace the joy con control sticks. That one was a life saver for me having two kids needing new ones.

      The cell phone charger bricked her switch as it needs a certain ohm resister built into the cable which most cell phone chargers don't have it. Only use 1st party chargers or you risk bricking your switch.
