I LOVE this cake! I've been a cake decorator for 40 years, but hate fondant. So recipies and decorations like this are the kind I love to watch (and make!). I think I may make this one for my mother-in-law's 83rd birthday in July. Well, technically she's my ex MIL, but still like a mom to me and she deserves something truly special like this cake.
Dude, you are going places! I can't wait to see how successful you become. This cake is nothing less than stunning. I love how the stems go outside of the "canvas." I love REAL frostings instead of fondants. Thanks for posting.
John, You are seriously a cake genius!! I have watched so many of your videos late at night while feeding baby and yesterday i just decided to give it a go and i finally made this recipe! I did a dulce de leche filling and oh my goodness it’s the fluffiest and tastiest cake I’ve ever made! I also made your snickerdoodle cookies and those were gone in minutes! So so good. Can’t wait to try more of your recipes!
Great!!! I was a Cake Decorator in Birmingham-Michigan for more than twenty years, your style is like it was mine, people use to watch me decorate, I love your passion for baking, it shows, Congratulations!!!
New subscriber saying "hi." This recipe will be the first cake I make from your recipe collection. It looks so perfect and yummy! The tip for cooling the outside of the pan during baking is a great way to prevent waste instead of trimming the cake prior to frosting.
oh my god this looks so good. browned butter is soooo gooooooodd. it makes literaly everything better. i had browned butter Madeleines once and those were amazing. i am super excited about this cake... i hate it when cakes are so much about the decoration that the inside isnt so important.... not to mention the decoration on this is pretty freaking incredible.
So elegant! Thank you for sharing your talent with us! Im not a profesiobal baker but baking is my passion, i can't wait to try this! Wish me luck!!! From Philippines with love! God bless you!
Beautiful...inside and out! Oh yes, this Italian buttercream...beat fondant cakes! Your orchids...are awesome too! Thank you for sharing so generously!
I just binge watched every video you have. My sweet-toothed husband says you need to open a bakery in Brentwood and he’ll be there. ❤️ thank you for all of your amazing tips. Can’t wait to use them in my next baking session!
I like how you give lots of tips and explain why you do certain things. I tend to use cake recipes that use the creaming method, which doesn't need baking soda (that I dislike). But, I can adapt my recipes with some of your ideas, like using browned butter for flavour.
You are my new favourite baker and have been an inspiration for so many of my more adventurous bakes lately! Making a cake inspired by both your Spiced Apple cake & Brown Butter cake with woodland / garden decoration for a friends birthday, all your videos and your website have been so helpful! Thanks so much John! :)
Hi, there.. I came across your channel when searching for another. Honest: I sucribed because I like your body language, the way you explain everything and the fact that baking has to be fun and not too picture perfect. I love your standmixer and the colour of your measuringcups 😍😍 The cooking strips I have always been sceptic about, but you've made a believer out of me!!! Love your recipes and my clients love them also!! I also love you subtle remarks which make me compare you to the drs. House in the similar named tv serie, whom I also adore.. Keep up the great work and I will keep watching and enjoying.
You made ghee. You can strain it and still have the toffee taste and smell. Once I started making my own ghee I never eat butter any other way. It also has a longer shelf life.
I made a practice cake with this recipe - amazing! This week I am creating a wedding cake for my nephew and his fiance using this recipe! It will be 3 stacked tiers (12, 10, and 8 inches) of 2 layers each tier. I have a spreadsheet of the recipe x2, x3, etc! I am also making a 2-layer sheet cake of this recipe for the caterer to have in the kitchen for additional servings. My nephew has requested a salted caramel filling, and I am trying to decide which buttercream recipe will be best for the rustic swirled frosting effect they want. Which buttercream recipe I will use depends on the weather/heat/humidity for the weekend. Just want to say I love your channel, your fb page, and your amazing recipes! Thank you so much for the inspiration!
I made it this cake with buttermilk because that's what I had on hand. I iced it with a brown sugar brown butter swiss meringue buttercream and I don't think I want any other frosting ever again. It's so delicious and got rave reviews.
This cake is Gorgeous!!! And I can't wait to make this recipe. My husband is Greek and loves the browned butter flavor (also loves burned butter spaghetti!) Thank you!
Brown butter was a favorite flavor of my dad’s, so I make this when I miss him. Now my kids request it for their birthdays. Thank you for this recipe.❤
I love your channel, I'm obsessed :-) I LOVE the way you clearly explain things. I made your Pumpkin Pie for Thanksgiving, it' was the BEST pie I've ever had.....that orange zest was off the chain THANKS AGAIN
Love your videos, I always learn something but they are still fast paced-the perfect combo! Your kitchen is stunning and who doesn't love watching a gorgeous man bake 😉 Sold on the baking strips! And finally a flower video I can consume without pausing and going back. Very cool tip with the matcha! Love, love, love it!
Beautiful! Looks amazingly delicious! I love orchids, peonies and roses. Can you make hydrangea buttercream flowers as well? A partially periwinkle and white or a powder blue hydrangea would be gorgeous.
I studied physics and I've worked as an engineer but now I'm learning making cakes in Germany. I have had so many difficulties especially because of my poor german. After I knew your channel and this makes me so delightful. I can learn so many things in your videos. Not only about baking but also about the positive good energy from you. I'm not sure you could read this comment, but I really want to say "Thank you". You are amazing!
i love how you made those orchids buttercream.. they are so pretty! such amazing talent xx. Thank you for sharing this recipe, will definitely give it a try for mothers day =)
Another trick for even cake layers - don’t butter the sides of the pan. You want the cake to rise evenly in the oven and not fighting to hold onto the sides because of the butter, you want it to rise and just stick a little bit so that it keeps that rise and you don’t end up with a dome in the center when the buttered sides make it slide down.
Hi John The thought of this cake had my mouth watering so last night, while browning butter for some pasta, I browned an extra 500g and put it in a plastic container, leaving it on the bench overnight, to cool. Today I carefully measured everything out but as it’s so cold here, room temp is fully solid butter. I pressed on regardless. The batter seemed more liquid than yours and my butter was still in very small clumps, like milk curdled, ready to make ricotta. So I sat my bowl in warm water, just long enough to get a more homogeneous batter. The smell!!!! Ohhhhh I can’t describe it. While baking, the cakes seemed to seperate and the butter bubbled on top But the sweet, nutty smell, intensified.u Eventually they were baked. Flat but with a slightly caramelised coating that stuck to the pans. The crumb is wide and nothing like yours. It seems like I didn’t put enough flour but I measured carefully. Wish I were more computer competent and could show you a pic. The smell, and taste of those caramelised bits is incredible so I’ll definitely try again but wonder if you know where I went wrong?
I’ve watched so many cakes tutorial on yt but this orchid cake is my dream cake 😭 I wish to bake it for myself as a present to myself for my bday tmr but....don’t even know if I should or could 😞 TQ for ur wonderful channel it’s a real inspiration
Beautiful! I'm going to attempt to make this for my baby shower ;) I hope the buttercream won't get affected if I have to store it in the fridge overnight
thank you for this recipe!!! i made it yesterday and it wasnt too sweet which i had usually a problem with in other recipes :)) ill be referring to all of your recipes from now on 😄
Preppy Kitchen question i followed all the instructions try do everything as you said but after I cooled down the cake and decorated the cake and when I cut the cake my cake got like compacted didn't look fluffy or spongie like ypirs?😭😭😭
U R Simply amazing with an extraordinary decorations in your cake.. Am from God's own country Kerala.. South India.. I loved all your decoration.. Eagerly waiting for all UR recipes..Keep your smile always.. Good Luck.. :)
Hi! Do you use any particular butter for your cakes and frostings? I’ve used Plugra (European style, higher% fat, less water content) for Swiss meringue buttercream, but sometimes Costco’s house bend organic unsalted for baking, lemon curd, etc.

I totally agree with you I too m a cake decorator but hate fondant personally
Amen! I decorate cakes as well and I hate fondant. I have much respect for a well decorated frosted cake.
Joyce Galloway Parker I would love to make this cake as well but a 6’ cake is too small for my family and I’m horrible with conversions!
In the contrary, I preffer fondant because I suck at piping things hahah. I wanna make this cake for my coworkers. Be well!
I hate fondant too.

Looks delightful. I noticed you used a dry measuring cup for the milk which is liquid. Is that your suggestion for this cook? Thx
Preppy Kitchen ok, if i make your recipe, should i place the milk in a 1 cup dry measuring cup?
Wow look so yummy 👍
