Sorry for the stupid question or some reason I read it as ae111 which has the blacktop. I recently converted my redtop to a silvertop and this video I really helpful. Keep the videos coming!
Hey Terra, good job on the video. Only thing I wanted to add is that when ignored the VVT pulleys can stop working completely and go silent again. The best way to test this is simply a test drive with and without the VVT solenoid plugged in. Anyway funny story for you- me and a guy I know where looking at my friends 20V engine because it was ticking loudly. He noticed one bucket has a good 0.5mm gap from the cam and when taken apart we found that the shim was sitting on top of the retainer instead of on the valve! one of the collets had a few dents but was still useable.
Thanks a lot for the vid bro. I just did a Silvertop swap in my rolla. And the engine was doing the diesel sound, was gonna go lash out at the trader and return the engine until I saw your vid. ^^ Happy its nothing major.
Hello, Great Video! But can you tell how you unbolted the VVT pulley bolt? Normally it's pretty difficult to remove and i think normally one should remove the cam cover, use a wrench to hold the cam and then unbolt it. I more like it doing your way but i'm not sure if it's save to just unbolt it without removing the cam cover. Thanks!
The "thing" that get worn on the pulley is the "bushing". The rubber that is physically connected to the camshaft itself... You will have to completely open up the whole VVT-pulley in order to fix this (pain to do properly since it utilizes springs in order to "not pull over") by adjusting the bushing 180 degrees(flipping it to the other side). I have done this procedure several times, mainly on newer VVT-i's. But also on my BT 20V as well. Nothing i'd recommend to the average "garage-Joe" but in comparison to what these baby's cost it could be worth a try.
Hi terra I apologize for the inconvenience but I have a problem in my ae86 I made the change of engine and I have a 4age black top and loses power aparatir of the 1900 rpm. already check the combutible pressure and this ok could be the vvt pulley
The one in the video was purchased from Manon Racing Products in New Zealand, if they can't supply one, you might have to get one directly from Toyota if they are still available.
"calibrated forearms" hahahaha nice one :) I always try and push a little bit more tension on the tensioner pulley myself when in this situation, the belts really love to flap around at high RPM and it prevents the belt kicking itself off a pulley. Nice video mate.
Thanks dude , yes i contacted Manon Racing and they have given me a fair quote about $107AUD for Waterpump includ shipping . Also i love your 101 man , its super clean and well maintained , Kudos for the information .
My BT 20v does the same. Id love to fix it but I can't justify spending that much on a pully to fix the diesel sound. Would having a warn pully over time damage the engine?
i have a AE111 Levin ( Blacktop 20V) and i just done the major service and had trouble finding parts in Sydney , would you know where i could get the Water Pump and Timing Belt Tensioner ?
Hello friend, I congratulate you on your video, a question, how many degrees did you put on the adjustable exhaust pulley and what direction did you notice?
@@TERRAOperativeOriginal Hi brother. May I know where you set the ignition timing upon advancing the exhaust cam gear? Any acceptable range you could advice? Thanks brother!
Also, would you mind telling me if your check engine light switch on after 4000rpm? Cause mine is switching on after 4000rpm,when I lift off the accelerator. Thanks.
Make sure the speed sensor wire is connected to the ECU if it's an engine swap, you want to connect it to the purple wire with white trace. Can you pull the code and let me know what it is?
***** It is a swap, but am not a mechanic, and I don't quite understand the wires...How do I make the check light flash to pull the codes? Is there any site you can advise me to get the pulley? Toyota Mu is asking 1000AUD for it. Too expensive.
could you tell me guys which part fit on the 4AGE silvertop... could you tell me the right part for the silvertop, I know for the blacktop its a 13050‑16020 and for the silvertop.... its the same... thanks everyone...
could you please tell me how and where to get that cam cover and spark plug cover from? i NEED one and cant find anywhere. atleast ones with the twincam engraved in em
Ive had people tell me that the sound is just wear but doesnt actually effect anything? Why is the sound bad, i have my vvt hooked to a switch, i can force it off, on, or leave auto, how much of a difference should there be with the vvt actuating by itself?
Not considering the power and efficiency loss caused by the worn pulley you get an erratic working on the cam-to-tappets (or whatever your particular cam lobes push on to operate the valves). Basically accelerated wear can happen which is never good. And if you don't get tired of that noise well then its all cool.
Well a lot of it really depends on your driving style. VVT's were introduced to combat stringent emission regulation when consumers craved for more power and better gas mileage. In essence you get a well tuned low RPM torque without losing in hight RPM just by adjusting timing (VVT). If you operate the engine at low RPM and never get to a point where VVT kicks in, you can happily live without it. Other thing that can happen is oil leak. Due to construction of VVT pulleys there is a viton oil seal between two plates that slide relater to each other to achieve difference in timing angle. At certain point this seal will crack and start to leak oil. You will probably have 100k+ miles clock and start replacing cam seals which won't really help.
Hi brother. What is your exhaust cam setting right now? Any advise on a good cam setting on a relatively stock engine? I want to get some more kick at low to mid rpm for city driving. Thank you!
I retarded the exhaust cam just a couple of degrees to broaden the torque curve (at the expense of lowering peak torque a bit) You can freely play with adjusting it a few degrees in either direction to experiment and the ECU won't freak out.
awesome, looking at the site now. I live in NZ so thats handy. I own a 97 trueno BZR and wanted to add some mods. Your car is so clean and tidy especially for its age (assuming its a 92/93?), its impressive.
You might loose a little power if it doesn't change the cam timing properly. I don't thing it will do much damage, beyond being noisy and possibly leaking oil eventually.

That drill does not work the same as a impact gun, if you use a torque bar with it it won't be torqued to spec. and you may break the stud or bolt. i have heard of people destroying blocks because they tried to torque the head down like that. Dont be fooled by the mechanics that use them with a torque bar.
The 'drill' I use on the wheel studs is a true electric impact wrench. I know, it's mine and I bought it. I also have the DeWalt battery drill so I know the difference.... What oil weight would you recommend with the 20v motor? From what I've read, the vvt cam gear can get picky with such. Thanks in advance.

Do these start out as a rattle when you start the car and eventually get worse over time as they wear out?

I advanced the exhaust pulley by just a few degrees, any more and it reduced midrange power.
