      Hermit crabs are adapted to dig in the sand, so if any does get in their eyes I’m sure it doesn’t bother them the same way it would us.

    re: the use of plastic bins or totes, I have a small set up in a sterilite gasket box, which has an air and moisture proof seal along the lid and closes pretty securely with multiple snaps around the top. I used to use it to house a baby snake, and it has a row of holes drilled around the top edge for ventilation. Even with the airholes, I have had no trouble at all keeping the humidity close to 100% in here, and while I don't currently have a heat matt on it (the ambient temp in my house currently is around 75-76 degrees, so additional heat would probably be too much right now), I have had one affixed to it in while it was housing the snake and again had no troubles with heat retention. I do have a digital thermometer/hydrometer in there to monitor the environment, fyi. If weight/sourcing a glass tank is problematic for some, I would say these gasket boxes are probably the best plastic alternative. Visibility definitely isn't as good as a glass enclosure, but I think you could successfully maintain the right environment.

    The tank toppers, as you call them, what are they and where do you get them? Does the tank have to have it? I also bought 2 1gallon tanks for their pools, I have the fresh water in, but am concerned that the filter system will clean the salt right out of the salt water, will it? Also my crabies don't seem to be interested or able to get in it even though I have put a ladder with the plastic craft material woven through it and down almost to the bottom of the tank. Where do you get a glass lid for tanks? I'm trying hard to get my tank set up right, but its costing more than I can do all at once. Then I screwed up when I went to the beach and brought home 5 more crabs, so now I'm pretty sure my tank is probably too small now but I figure they are still better off than in them beach stores. I wanted to save them all, but knew I couldn't. Idk if you answer back personally through messages on messenger or here, but I am waiting your reply. I'm going to apologize in advance for driving you guys crazy. I just want to get their crabitat right.

    • @CrabCentralStation
      @CrabCentralStation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! You won’t drive us crazy, we are happy to help. 😊 The tank topper is an additional level to the tank that adds climbing areas in the tank. It is optional. It doesn’t add to molting space so it doesn’t allow you to have more crabs in a tank. We recommend 10 gallons per Crab in the tank. So if you have 5 total, you’d need a 50 gallon tank. The filter system won’t clean out the salt, it will stay salty. You can get a salinity gauge to monitor the salinity of the water if you want. If you don’t think your crabs can get in or out you will want to find something else that will allow that. We have fake plants and aquarium decor leading up to and inside our pools. The crabs will go in the water when they are ready, they know they need it to survive so they’ll find it as long as they can get to it. Glass lids can be found online or also hand made. Ours are handmade, I’ll link a video where we learned how to do it.
      th-cam.com/video/whwqdsF4GiI/w-d-xo.html
      They’re super easy to make. We got our glass from a local glass cutter. We do also do personal messaging if you’d prefer on Instagram or the messaging system through our Facebook page. Both can be found at CrabCentralStation

    Hey!! Question could a hermit crab eat a dead Pray mantis ? We had a bug project and I caught a better pray mantis so I was wondering?

    • @CrabCentralStation
      @CrabCentralStation  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I’d say no just to be safe. Typically when you catch bugs you don’t know what they’ve been around or exposed to. The bug could have ingested pesticides or something toxic to hermit crabs. While I am not actually positive hermit crabs can have a praying mantis, it’s too risky!

    • @mikeparker4853
      @mikeparker4853 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CrabCentralStation Oh ok well I won't then! you have a good point. And it's so cool that they can eat so many different things . But dose the toxic stuff apply to all bugs because I really wanted to put some rolly pollys in there .

    • @CrabCentralStation
      @CrabCentralStation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We typically don’t recommend adding animals that have been outside into your tank. For isopods such as Rolly Pollys you’d have to keep them in a container and cycle out the bad pesticides and such (which takes many months). I’m sure there’s information on the internet on how to do that. But we recommend buying isopods from a breeder that way you know they’re safe and have no sicknesses.

      @CrabCentralStation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! Thanks for watching. If you have questions feel free to ask! One of our biggest tips is if you’re starting out without the proper supplies and tank set up, always do research and then fix the tank! This will save you money and frustration. When we first started, we bought many things that turns out weren’t safe. So, definitely research and then change things. But if you’re starting out with the correct things than just continue to research all the time! Even we are always doing research. Our two favorite resources are www.crabstreetjournal.org and the Land Hermit Crab Owners Society Facebook group

    • @alicia5508
      @alicia5508 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your house temp is 70 80 you should be good so you just need to have the humidity i have mine at 70

    • @CrabCentralStation
      @CrabCentralStation  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as your heat and humidity are in the range of 75-85% for humidity and 75-85F (23-30C) for heat then there shouldn't be any alterations needed! You may not need a heat mat if it is warm enough where you are. I know that some people in Indonesia don't have a completely sealed lid because it is very humid there. But as long as your target heat and humidity are being met, you probably won't need to make many alterations.

    @carolinesalpeck2567 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi love your channel! Would you mind explaining to me how lifting the lid on a glass tank let’s out less humidity then lifting the lid on a plastic tub? To me it seems like the same amount of humidity is let out whether it’s plastic or glass. I have always recommended a tub to people who can’t afford a huge tank and I don’t really understand how a tank is any better (as long as you don’t mind not being able to see them as well of course). Thanks!

    • @CrabCentralStation
      @CrabCentralStation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for supporting the channel. That's a great question! Most aquarium tanks have a hinged lid. So when you open it for feedimg/maintenance, you only expose a portion of the tank. Larger tanks even have a dividing support bar, which allows for two hinged lids - so only 1/4 of the tank would be opened, allowing heat/humidity to escape. Another reason is that glass is an excellent insulator, I keeps the heat in the tank nicely, whereas the plastic tote is much more difficult to regulate heat in (especially during cold winter months). One more reason we don't recommend totes as permanent hermit crab homes is because they are not as stable as a tank. If a tote is bumped, scooted, or picked up to move to a different location (which we have found is one of the reasons folks like totes, easier to move), molt caves collapse and disturb molting crabs. As you mentioned, viewing is another reason to not use them. If you can't see your hermit crabs.... why have them? It's kind of like putting a fish in a tupperware storage bowl. I hope this helps answer your question, I appreciate that you asked! We all learn by asking questions like this one.

    Hey I was wondering will my hermit. Crab die from to much humidity and also one of them has only one eye will she survive?

    • @CrabCentralStation
      @CrabCentralStation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! There’s not a ton of research on how badly too high humidity can hurt a hermit crab. What we do know is that they live in areas with humidity around 75-85%. We also know that hermit crabs have modified gills, which means that they need a combination of air and water. Too much of one of them will not be balanced for what their gills need. We can not say, 100% your crabs will die from too high humidity. But we look at what is in the wild and use that in our tanks. We always will recommend keeping the humidity in the correct ranges due to the lack of actual scientific proof of harm. And yes, your hermit crab with one eye should survive! It will either grow back if it was lost due to a bad molt or stay gone if it was born that way.

      Hi! If the hermit crab sand is made with calcium carbonate or is calcium sand, no. When calcium sand gets wet, it clumps up and dries out. Hermit crabs keep water in their shells and when the sand gets in their shell, it dries like concrete locking them in.

      Hi! Can you talk about how your tank is set up, what you’re doing for heating, lids ect

    • @CrabCentralStation
      @CrabCentralStation  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What heat source are you using? That could be the cause of low humidity. Also, what type of lid do you have on your tank?

    Is it better to buy two crabs at one time when first starting my tank? Or can I start with just one crab for now? And if so how long till I need to add the other crab as I've heard they don't like to be alone. Last question does it matter about what sex they are like for example two males, two females, male and female just curious. Thank a lot.

      Hi! We recommend doing all the research necessary and getting the tank set up before getting your hermit crabs. Then, you can get the number of hermit crabs you want. Definitely start with 2. What you don’t want is to have to be worried about getting the tank set up in time and rush it while you have hermit crabs waiting. We also recommend doing the PPS method which we have covered in a video. The gender doesn’t matter! In correct conditions, hermit crabs will mate and spawn eggs but they are only viable if you care for them.

    my tank gets fog on it, is that not supposed to happen

    • @CrabCentralStation
      @CrabCentralStation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any condensation should be wiped off. It is common when the air in the room outside of the tank is colder than the air inside the tank. You can try and cover the tank with a blanket at night while you sleep. That may help keep it down.

    • @user-bz8yg6pl6n

      @@CrabCentralStation makes sense. i like to sleep in a cold room so i keep and blanket on the tank and wipe it off in the morning.

    Hi, what is a 'topper'?

    • @CrabCentralStation
      @CrabCentralStation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Eileen Bowers! Great question. A "topper" is another tank that has been placed on top of the base tank. This gives more vertical space for the crabs to climb. We use exoterra tanks as toppers because they have front opening doors, making tank maintenance much easier. If you take a look at our Tank Reveal video or our Crab Room Tour video, you will get a good look at our toppers.

    do you need eco earth for them? can you respond quick?!

    • @CrabCentralStation
      @CrabCentralStation  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry! We have school and work all day and can’t respond as quickly as before. We recommend using eco earth because it helps to hold molt caves, provide humidity, and the hermit crabs eat it. We would say it is needed but everyone care and opinions are up to them. We can’t force anything on anyone
