    Total genius.
Anyone bad mouthing him knows little about the sport or has lost money due to a bad gambling addiction.
He has single handily changed racing forever and this should be acknowledged.
A true legend in our lifetime and yet someone with a problem will slate him.
He should be knighted for what he has accomplished in his life.

That is the best interview of the great man ever well done Luke you allowed the man to reminisce which was great to listen to, I really enjoyed it and learned a now't I only wish I'd had a horse with him all them years ago. I did get a few tips from Mr. Pipes horses but never those prices he mentioned maybe 5/4 because not many were priced at large figures.
Such a clever man it was great to listen to him. It's a lesson to all that it is best to listen than to talk he is a man who learned by reading listening and not proud to ask a question. I am still trying to pick the winners. Chester Barnes, I remember watching him play his table tennis great player and a lucky bugger having a friend like Mr. Pipe. Thanks again Luke catch up with you if you are ever up at Redcar races. The program he was talking about I remember watching but like most things in life once you begin to win a little more than you should expect the old tie brigade to stop you.
As for AP, I saw him on a horse at Sedgefield races after the race where he came second he gave the horse a good whipping possibly he expected to win but the horse did not pick up as he expected. well, one guy did not like what he saw and went to the stewards' room or where they weigh in and there I saw the shouting match between AP and the guy who was a big piece of meat. This was early 2000 thereabouts I think the only time I saw AP up at Sedgefield.
I read a few comments about Martin Pipe not giving out tips other than Chester well think of it if it lost you would not be happy, or gave it every Tom Dick he would never have made money himself as much as I would have liked a tip I can understand why he did not give tips out.

Very interesting scientific approach. Coming from the Antipodes, I grew up with a different perspective. In the early 1960's New Zealand was dominant in distance and middle distance running, thanks to the techniques of coach Arthur Lydiard, which emphasised jogging over long distances as opposed to the interval training so popular in Europe in the 40's and 50's (Martin mentions Emil Zatopek in this context). Since then, interval training has made a comeback, but nevertheless Lydiard's invention of jogging has had a profound effect. He considered acetic levels in blood, and the efficiency of oxygen uptake to neutralise it, hence aerobics. My father was an owner-trainer, and found the long, slow regime quite beneficial with his horses. I suspect that interval training is more efficient time-wise (human and equine), being more intense, but the final goal is the same.

Old Pipey ruffled the feathers of the 'Lambourne set' . So much so he was accused of foul play. Never proved. They even sent Roger Cook to do their bidding. He out-thought them; plain and simple.

This is what PISSES ME UP about a lot of Jockeys on the FLAT & NATIONAL HUNT- Jockeys ''FIGHTING'' their Horse by PULLING THEM BACK (Commentator saying the Horse is KEEN) It's NOT THE HORSE, but THE JOCKEY!!!

Maybe other trainers have caught up with his methods, and Martin would only be average today.

as far as his training methods go
interval training has been around fo 50 years so that's nothing new but the reality is knowing how much to give them and when to back off that the key to all the great trainers and definitely the introduction of doing bloods has definitely helped top trainers and probably as I've already said hard work and overseeing everything is done correctly is the difference in the top trainers.
