One of the greatest grand national jumping race for me was the one Red Rum won beating a formidable field which I remember included Spartan Missile,Royal Mail,Zongalero etc. Also the bigtime stamina speed horse Crisp (12stone)was reeled in by Red Rum(10 stone 5) who won another Grand National. True Legendary performances in Track Record Time.

Red Rum was my hero when I was a kid, but even though I lived in Liverpool I never saw him. Years later in about 1989 I went to Gingers car place in Birkdale, only to discover they had gone! A friend tracked down their new whereabouts and phoned and asked if I could come and see him - and they said yes (I was too embarrassed to ask). Anyway, a stable girl showed me to his field and I was left alone with him for as long as I wanted! I just couldn't believe it, me giving this star Polos and stroking his neck. Fantastic people giving me that opportunity as I knew he was getting on for a racehorse, and I had to meet him once in my life. RIP Rummy.

My dad use to let me pick a horse in the national every year when I was a kid, he liked a bet and I've love racing every since. one of my first memory was red rum in 1977 vaguely familiar when I was nearly 7. I became a betting shop manager in the game for a decade before computers took over. Funny enough I backed ginger's other national winner amberleigh house in 2004 and his son has been my luckiest trainer since ginger retired. RIP red rum and ginger, thanks for the timeless memories.

What an amazing horse. I watched all those races as a kid and Red Rum was my hero. It brings tears to my eyes - an exceptional horse. At least he could live out his years in retirement and live a long life. Behind the scenes I don't know how it was then, but now racing is a dirty game with horses running far too young to develop, many euthanized after bad falls, tongues tied up in races, pumped full of pain killer before races and boxed for 23 hours with one hour of gallop training. There must be restrictions to improve the welfare of horses in the racing scene. I think they shouldn't run so young to avoid fatal injuries.

For all the animal rights people who think that making an animal do work of any sort is abusive and exploitative consider this. We produce animals to fill certain needs. If the needs cease to exist so will the that breed of animal. Apparently when Downton Abbey had heirloom pigs of a certain spotted coat pattern, numbers of a couple other endangered breeds plummeted. The same would happen with all the horses, dogs etc that have been selectively bred for different jobs.

In the time of "CORONAVIRUS WORLD WAR - 3" in 2020 when your own life is at the hands of a invisible pandemic it's cinema and documentaries that breaks all barriers and provides solace and entertainment. As a Flat race fan and punter as also a fan of the annual "Grand National " run in Liverpool, home of the "Beatles" was educated on the exploits of "RED RUM" through this documentary. In 1985 i was doing my "Marine Engineers" examination course at South Shields in England and wagered occasionally on the hurdlers. Did wager on the 1986 Grand National when "Steptoe" won the race and i did get place money.Had a large pop size poster of "RED RUM" in my house for over a decade and watching the manner in which he won his maiden "Grand National" in 1973 by narrowly beating "Crisp" after flopping as a "Flat Racehorse" made me realize that failure in a particular phase of your life doesn't mean a end to your ambitions or prospects of success in another profession or occupation. Thanks "RED RUM" for teaching us humans a little bit of managing your own life. Ahoy !

@Eddie Tait - you and your "horsey grades" & the "unfair" 23lb advantage. The National is about Guts and Stamina - it's the reason people watch the most grueling race on the planet. Most people don't need a statistical analysis to intuit the Winner in terms of Guts and Stamina - but if they had to explain to a bookworm why Red Rum was pre-eminant in terms of Guts and Stamina then they'd start by pointing out that Crisp was a giant 17 hands to Red Rums 15 hands - making Crisp at least 300lb heavier. In the 1973 National Red Rum carried 1/7th Body Weight to Crisp's 1/8th - and yet Red Rum still hauled Crisp in & would have beaten him by 400 yards had the race been 1/2 mile longer - in fact Crisp was extremely lucky the race finished when it did - otherwise his embarassment would have increased exponentially. Red Rum had loads in the tank at the finish line - despite (remember) carrying 1/7th Body Weight..... but none of this matters in your book because your book doesn't have a column for Guts or Stamina. However, some simple stats you might understand.....Red Rum beat 2-times Gold Cup Winner L'Escargot (twice) - and also jumped 150 consecutive National Fences without falling or refusing - while placing no worse than 2nd .... unlike 5-time Gold Cup Winner Golden Miller that ran the National 5 times and finished only once. The fact is that so-called Grade 1 chasers lack the GUTS, STAMINA, CONSISTENCY & JUMPING ABILITY to make any impact in the National - otherwise they would have done so by now. Not "liking" the National Fences isn't a reasonable excuse for a Grade 1 Steeplechaser - they either have what it takes or they haven't.

@Frank Filthyfinger When `Red Rum` carried 12st,he was only giving 1lb in weight to `L`Escargot`...He beat him 7lengths...`Crisp` beat ``L`Escargot 25lengths .....When the two horses met at levels at Doncaster,`Rummy`
      couldn`t get `Crisp` `of the bridle`..In the words of Peter O`Sullevan `Crisp trounced `Red Rum`...
When `Red Rum` lost to `Red Candle` in the Hennessy, his fanatics claim,it was only the weight that beat him.
`Red Rum` was only giving 14lbs that day..It is just common sense `Crisp` was beaten less then a length
giving 23lbs, .he would obviously have won at anything approaching levels.....All I can assume is that such
foolishness is by people who suffer from `wilful blindness` or know nothing about the sport .....

Crisp gave Red Rum 23lbs in weight and Red Rum only scraped past him beating Crisp by 3/4 lengths. Now just imagine what Crisp would have did to Rummy off level weights. That's the difference between Handicappers and grade 1 horses
