Hydrogen Peroxide is an oxidant so you def don't want that on your wheels. Alcohol is both polar and non polar so it's going to give you the best solvent activity for cleaning gunk and water
As a guy who works with industrial bearings all the time, I wouldn't bother buying a brand of grease marketed for skateboarding. What you're most likely getting is a small amount of lithium grease for a high price. I would recommend 3in1 lithium spray on grease. It's probably 10 times the amount of grease for about the same price. Tested it on my skateboard bearings and it works great. It is designed for bearings and high temperature applications (friction). Just giving my 2 cents. Great video as always guys, you're a great inspiration and true embodiment of the spirit of skateboarding 😊.
Evan Smirnow Thanks! A lot of skate companies false advertise and overprice certain things, (Lucky, World Industries, Blind) so it can be difficult to find a good product for the right price sometimes. By lithium grease do you mean something like WD40? Last I checked WD40 isn't actually a lubricant. I mean, I used it on some really old bearings once and it was fine, but I'd rather get the speed cream for my new bearings because it's formulated for these bearings and certain bearings have different metals and I'm not sure what would be the best treatment for them.
Stephen Struble No, not WD40, it turns into a hard lacquer after a while and will seize up the bearings. Lithium grease spray will say it on the bottle and usually comes out white or opaque. The brand I recommended was 3-in-1 brand, but that's just the one I use. Should be in the same section as WD40 though.
Evan Smirnow I was doing some research and they said to stay away from white lithium grease for almost the same reason to not use WD40. I guess the white lithium grease is made for bigger parts and so it can be harsh on the bearings over time.
I checked out Walmart boards recently, because I used to ride them as a kid, but now I pay for my own custom setups, and I couldn’t believe how bad they really are. It’s amazing that I didn’t end up hating skateboarding. They don’t even spin a full rotation
Question. 2 rather. How frequently should you clean your bearings? I'm a moderate to heavy longboard user. In addition, I've also heard nail polish remover is a good way to clean bearings. I'm new to using citrus cleaner. As far as nail po. remover vs. citrus cleaner, is there a difference, or does it really matter? Btw great vid, very informative!
I use a bones bearing cleaner bottle and a non petroleum based citrus degreaser (that part is important, do not use wd-40 or anything like that) Place the bearings in the bottle on the spacer provided, fill the bottle to 1/3 - 1/2 full of degreaser, shake the shit out if it (for best results, empty the degreaser, and do this a second time. After this, blast the bearings with an air compressor or a can of compressed air until they are completely dry. Chuck in 1-2 drops of bones speed cream. After about an hour of skating, the speed cream should work its way into the bearings and they will be running at their best. I do this regularly on my bones swiss ceramic bearings (i know i sound like i am trying to sell you all bones products, but they just really know bearings and are my personal preference.
For those who's bearings are very, very tight in the wheels, I found this to help a lot. Set down your board with an empty axle facing away from you, and put the first half of the wheel onto the truck. Then, push, alternating edges of the wheel, using *ONLY YOUR THUMBS*. Depending on how tight in the wheel your bearing is, this may take a little bit of time, but it's definitely the fastest way to take them out.
@@WeezyFBaby243 yup. The trucks should be on top of the board. Just make sure that the board is firmly in place and you can gradually loosen every side of the bearing by using the axle to gently pry it out a little bit at a time.
Hey Aaron, I have a suggestion for rain bearings. What I currently use is a set of VXB abec 7 (got them for 12$ in montreal, it's usually more expensive in canada than USA), they have removable rubber caps that I remove and throw away so when I roll in water and dirt it goes in but it all goes out as fast, because it's obvious that it will get in anyway. I would clean bearings from a good board but my rain bearings on my plastic board are not silent but super fast even with the rain after3months

Should I stay away from those sidewalks? I wouldn’t be riding on the actual beach just the sidewalks that have some sand on them.
hey Aaron, I watched some others tutorials and some of them said that I must not use any water. So I'm warried that my bearings will start to rust if I use the cleaner. What do you think, will they start to rust?

Some tips. Never use compressed air to remove debris. Wd40 means water displacement 40. Citrus cleaners are water based so make sure you get all of it out and apply your lubricant right away to prevent pitting and corrosion. The noise you hear is essentially the slack from wear. A great thing you can do to do prolong bearing life is remove water as soon as possible. I spend a lot of time in hotels so on a pinch use that hair dryer on your board! Anyone in 2019 watching this. I reccomend just doing DW40. I was watching this, then my dad said just use wd40. No need to take off the wheels. Before I used WD40 My bearings were shit. Then bam they were almost as brand new. I realized my board made a different sound when it hit the ground. The sound its supposed to make. Hope this helps.
WhatAMeme WD-40 is a water displacement so I can absolutely see it being used for this, but I’d still use a bearing oil or cream in conjunction with the WD-40 which should enhance the effectiveness of the bearing oil or cream.
my method was always 1. pull dust covers 2. spray or soak in wd-40 or pb-blaster and spin until dirt is gone (penetrant does a good job removing moisture and debris) 3. wipe bearings with lint free rag until dry 4. oil w/ "3 in one" or bearing oil and replace dust covers I used to make a set of bearing last years without any ill effect this way Rain skating is fun on an aluminum board, I used automotive axle grease in those bearings so it would displace water/dirt
Joseph Yzaguirre WD-40 being used as a lubricant would most likely cause excessive wear, I am discussing using WD-40 as a cleaner. WD-40 is NOT going to damage hardened steel by itself
If the person meant WD-40 Silicone for a quick fix the person would be correct but regular WD-40 is bad for long-term. Unless you use WD-40 with the straw to thoroughly clean the bearings (please make sure you wear protective glasses as well as gloves) & then put the bearing(s) in brake cleaner. After that, wait for them to dry & put lubricant/grease/oil.
This may be a dumb question but I need help, on my bearings (Bones Red) one side is open so you can see the ball bearings but there is like a "film" of plastic or something over it are you suppose to take that off when your cleaning/lubing? or do you just do it over it?
I got a way if ur bearings r going slow. 1. take off bearing cover 2. dip in rubbing alchohol 3. stir around, get big clumps out 4. take bearing out and light it on fire This burns off the gunk and makes clumps little 5. repeat 3 and 4 over and over again until it runs very smooth Can some1 tell me if graphite dust works as a lube?
in my country, a set of bearings cost about $42 bucks (converted from my money). what i did was buy 4 fidget spinners which cost me $32 bucks all together lol
i'm not from us, so i've never heard about citrus orange cleaner, so which product I should replace to get the same effect? And what lub should i use as well?
What works really good for me is to take a small container that the bearings fit in and I put them in 2 at a time and then fill it up a little bit with lighter fluid (this is not a joke) and then shake them a little. It helps to take the bearing covers off. Lighter fluid has naptha in it which is a great degreaser and is liquid thin so it gets into all the tiny spaces. This should only take about a minute per batch. Once you get them out, lay them on a paper towel and maybe take some compressed air or even just blow on them and it will dry the lighter fluid almost immediately, try giving them a few spins while doing this. Once they are dry MAKE SURE you add your lubricant of choice or else they will rust as the lighter fluid will remove ANY trace of oil in the bearing. Put the shields back on and repeat till you get them all done. This should be obvious but do not have ANY open flame around while you are doing this. As far as the left over fluid in the container you can just squeeze the bottle of lighter fluid and suck the fluid back into it. Clean up the container and stow away for future use.

dont bother with speed cream what i do is once every week is just wipe the dirt off my bearings with like tissues before it would sink into the bearings and it makes them perfect my friend has does that and he made his reds last 2 years by doing that and there still perfect so honestly just do that
+Euan Kirby fyi wiping the dirt off ur bearings isnt doing shit because theyre still gonna get dry..
no cause they sink in and make them worse on the un shielded side and make i harder 4 them 2 roll
yea but im saying u still need lube.. u said that all u do is wipe dirt off but u need to lube ur bearings they will dry out that is most important
Wtf haha 14 likes this must be trolling
Euan Kirby the cream also reduces friction and heat which will tear at your bearings and make them last shorter lives
Acetone in a bowl and lightly tap the bearing on the bottom of the bowl and watch the dirt and grease fall out... when done use a light grease to get between the shield and ball bearings themselves
Don't use acetone
use molten steel to clean your ears.
Does it work? I mean my ears are pretty clean the way they are... I have used acetone on bearings for years and never had any issues as long as you don't leave them dry.
+Rooch I used to use kerosene. as long as you don't leave em in too long acetone should work pretty well.
+Avery I have only ever seen a metal band holding the ball bearings underneath the dust cover... who knows lol
Lol i just use windex and cooking oil ive had the same Shake Junt Abec 7 bearings for like 2 years and i ride with the sheilds off
do you clean the inside of the shield too? after taking it off
Can I use regular rubbing alcohol for the first step, and then use the bones lubricant? Or is rubbing alcohol bad for the bearings?
Anyone in 2019 watching this. I reccomend just doing DW40. I was watching this, then my dad said just use wd40. No need to take off the wheels. Before I used WD40 My bearings were shit. Then bam they were almost as brand new. I realized my board made a different sound when it hit the ground. The sound its supposed to make. Hope this helps.
WhatAMeme WD-40 is a water displacement so I can absolutely see it being used for this, but I’d still use a bearing oil or cream in conjunction with the WD-40 which should enhance the effectiveness of the bearing oil or cream.
it was nice when braille used to upload actually helpful videos.
my method was always
1. pull dust covers
2. spray or soak in wd-40 or pb-blaster and spin until dirt is gone (penetrant does a good job removing moisture and debris)
3. wipe bearings with lint free rag until dry
4. oil w/ "3 in one" or bearing oil and replace dust covers
I used to make a set of bearing last years without any ill effect this way
Rain skating is fun on an aluminum board, I used automotive axle grease in those bearings so it would displace water/dirt
wd-40 ruins your bearing
Joseph Yzaguirre WD-40 being used as a lubricant would most likely cause excessive wear, I am discussing using WD-40 as a cleaner.
WD-40 is NOT going to damage hardened steel by itself
+Antinull you're right it wont damage steel but it will remove all your lubricant you had in your bearings
Owen Higgins right, which is fine when you are using it as a cleaner, removing the WD-40 and REPLACING the lubricant
Can I use astroglide for lubricant? (serious question)
Do u wash the barrings with water after using the citrus cleaner and then let It dry ?
*so we gonna make believe he showed us how to open the bearing casing to expose the bearings?ok*
😏
He has bearings that are partially open on 1 side
Yh he has bones reds if your having trouble just TH-cam how to open ur bearings. Yeah I know I’m 10 months late but idgaf
That part at the end, you’re so stinking cute and you have an inner child.
What else can I use to clean it if I don't have any of that plz help
Javier Gandara you can clean it using alcohol, but you will need to get good lubricant
Javier Gandara wd-40 cleans and lubricates
Jordan Flores wd-40 isn't good, it does clean well, but it's a solvent, not a lubricant, and it dries out and leaves a residue that attracts dirt.
iWolfer S fluid film
+Rooty Tooty dont take off the otherside just clean them as is
Do you pull the rubber caps off before applying cream?
and your ready to roll... ROLL OUT
for some reason i died of laughter there
Why do ppl remove the shields? Im kinda new...
People remove the shield so that they can get a deeper/ better clean
wistyanh Yeah, but some people have them removed while riding, do you know why?
***** Thanks!
SniperOfOwnage these kinds of bearings dont have a shield from the box to ensure easy cleaning and lubrication
SniperOfOwnage so that it makes a cooler sound
I watched this after cleaning my bearings in a bleach solution...
Should you take the shield of when oiling them
I got a way if ur bearings r going slow.
1. take off bearing cover
2. dip in rubbing alchohol
3. stir around, get big clumps out
4. take bearing out and light it on fire
This burns off the gunk and makes clumps little
5. repeat 3 and 4 over and over again until it runs very smooth
Can some1 tell me if graphite dust works as a lube?
in my country, a set of bearings cost about $42 bucks (converted from my money). what i did was buy 4 fidget spinners which cost me $32 bucks all together lol
You have to have 8 bearings though?
My man skates one bearing in one wheel XD
Stonks
@@rouxlucas8083 there are four bearings in a fidget spinner
6 years ago and he still looks the same😂😂
i like to get a sandwich bag and put my berrins inside and put baby oil in and rubb it around then i scrub it with a tooth brush
lol JUST like Chris chann....
does it actually work?
+Just a random guy yes it does
I do the same thing and it works😂
I had to read this after i took every wheel off cleaned and put em back on
Do I have to use skate tools or can I use other ones?
I haven't got speed cream what can I use instead
Do a skate stupid with no bearings
Then there would be no skate
Just watch the skate stupid with just trucks
I’ve had the same bearings for around 14 years, they aren’t doing great I’ll say that.
Bro just get some reds there like 20 bucks
Maria Christina not actually sure to be honest, my board was given to me by my uncle when I was a kid and I should probably upgrade.
So much people whos fidget spinner isnt spinning 😂
i'm not from us, so i've never heard about citrus orange cleaner, so which product I should replace to get the same effect?
And what lub should i use as well?
Will this method work with ceramic bearings? Thanks.
Okay, thanks a lot!
Wait... I heard a hissing sound when you spinned your wheels...
thats a good sign! It's just showing how fast the bearings can go!
That's actually bad. In some occasions.
It's most likely making that sound due to no pressure on the wheel, so it wobbles back and forth across the bearings. Correct me if im being an idiot.
It's because the bearings are dry and they need a lubricant so they don't completely dry off.
Thats a valid reason too.
Dislike u didn’t say I’m a professional skateboarder from the San Francisco Bay Area
Ima just put some lube on my wheels ;))
How often should you do this?
Nah! break clean dude... trust me!
No paper towel, no air compressor, dry's in seconds, has no residue, drop some synthetic oil in ready to go
I got my new bearings wet😭 I got them yesterday dog I’m so angry now
Just happened to me too, I only skate my new bearings like 5 times and rain got In them
Just. Buy new bearings.. like 15 bucks..
inxZie- what if I want to buy thrashers x mob grip grip tap
Sponsored by bones lolz
+CowboyHiha well they are actually really good..and just he likes something doesn't mean he's sponsored.
+Nate Marhula try oust bearings, I compared the moc5's versus reds (about the same price point) and the moc5's did much better
Have a set of swiss ceramics on my longboard for 5 years now. Never cleaned them (I don't ride in stupid shit) and they are by far the best bearings I have ever rode. Glide like a dream.
Windex, AJAX, JIF....... are any of these brands of cleaning spray okay to use?
do you have to do it for penny boards to?
