    This was actually really informative Ricky. Legit I've skated since I was a kid and I don't think I've actually ever cleaned bearings before. Just every once in a while I'd break one or notice they were really really gunked up and I'd buy a whole new set cus I'm that lazy. I can def see this vid being super useful to people that are short on cash or don't have a local skateshop where they can get new ones quick tho. In the end spendin like a lil over 10 bucks on alcohol and bearing lubricant is a better deal for the money in the long run. Like as long as you don't break one you can keep a set of bearings good for quite a while

    This is something there isn't alot of information about. Even your $20 reds need cleaning. Too many people just buy new bearings,
    and never wear in their bearings and clean them for maximum efficiency.
    Good one Ricky. 👍

    A note if you reside in germany. While Isopropyl is indeed the Nr.1, tainted Ethanol (Brenn-Spiritus) or Lighter-Fluid (Feuerzeug-Benzin) does the trick. Problem is: ethanol isn't sold anymore in regular markets. Lighter Fluid is still cheaper than Isopropyl but leaves a film on the surface - where with ethanol you could have just burned it out and use a microfibre-fleece to remove the residue, with lighter-fluid it won't work good enough. So Isopropyl remains; for private use you get it in medical pharmacies (Apotheken) solely. It is expensive (due to being pure), but if you use the cylinder your bearings originally came in, the box of a photo-film (80s kids ...) or the capsule inside a Kinder-Surprise-Egg/Ueberraschungs-Ei, the standard 15ml issued is more than enough to fill those put bearings in and shake until ye dumb. Scrub with a toothbrush. Clean it with a microfibre-cloth. Done. You can filter the sud by pouring it through a coffee-filter or a cotton-pad for face-cleansing and reuse it on the next run.
    Hope it helps!

    You install them with the shield inside the wheels. The factory sealed side keeps out the dirt. The removable shield side is for lubricating. Because you can’t lubricate through the factory sealed side.

    I rub skate wax around the outside edge of the bearing and it makes the bearings pop in way easier and way easier to take out

    Carb cleaner is also amazing it comes in a can with a long straw like tube that you can spray. Just pop the shields and spray them with the Carb cleaner it's the stuff you use for cars. Just let them dry all night after doing that then stick some speed cream in and there good as new

    keeping bearings clean is super important if you want to extend the life of your bearings. dirt and particles can (sometimes) mess with the shape of the ball bearings, effecting the life/spin of the bearing. both bronson and bones sell their own versions of a bearing cleaning kit if youre looking for a "proper" cleaning unit. :)

    i use spacers in between the bearings. earlier i used to put in there bearing grease but it was not the best picked up a lot of dirt and made the bearings last less longer in between the cleanings. Nowdays i put a few droo of speed cream onto the truck bolt where the spacer goes. It is much better.

    Love this video. tips are always helpful. I have a challenge for you Rick. Well not so much a challenge, I guess more of an experiment. The next time you clean your bearings, I want you to try Break cleaner. You don't even need to scrub being that it sprays so hard out of the can. I would like to see a video with this technique if possible. I am curious to see how it would compare to the alcohol and you opinion on it. PS, break clean is pretty cheap. Prob less than the alcohol.

      Riding with the shields off won't necessarily *destroy* your bearings, it'll just cause them to be far more susceptible to the grime and debris associated with skateboarding. Bronson RAWs are shieldless (designed to be ridden without shields,) and some reviews of them indicate that they slow down over time, but that could very well be because those people could have ridden them around gunky dusty areas. If I were to get RAWs, I'd only use them on hillbomb straightaway situations or clean clean clean skateparks.

    i believe methylated spirits is the same thing as denatured alcohol here. both are pretty bad for your skin (both contain methanol which is a poison). isopropyl alcohol is safe to come in contact with your skin as it will only cause some dryness so protective gloves are recommended.

    • @colossalfart
      @colossalfart 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nah, you're good bro! WD40 is actually pretty good for cleaning. Not so great as a lubricant. Just clean up your bearings up and apply some other type of lube. Sewing machine oil works great if you don't have speed cream. A single drop per bearing is enough. And remember to wipe off the lube on the outside of the bearings because it serves no purpose there and will only attract dust.

    I remember Chris Roberts on 9 club said he removes the shields on new bearings before using them - he figured if some grit got in it would also get back out again without the shields to stop it. Kindof makes sense. Kindof. He also has a lifetime supply of free bearings so he probably doesn't really care - just throw in another new set.....

    • @LoLoBits
      @LoLoBits 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      the caveat to this though is to not use lubricant or the dirt will just thicken it and make them worse. so just clean your bearings, let them dry and you're good to go. i was actually shocked how good they roll with no lube

    • @ezedjay
      @ezedjay 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I totally get it. Dry bearings though get hot when they spin. It does shorten the life considerably. It's like running a car with no oil in it - although it takes a lot longer to kill dry bearings than it does to kill a dry engine. Again - Crob just throws in new ones from his lifetime supply so not a problem for him.....the lucky so and so.

    Wd40 is great, it CAN NOT mess up your bearings. What messes up your bearings is not cleaning them regularly and/or riding them hard and fast with no lube in them. Think of wd40 like a thin daily cleaning lubricant while speed cream is a thicker weekly lube that doesn't clean out bearings so you have to. Once you spray wd40 on your bearings it will break down gunk AND whatever lube is in the bearings, so if you don't keep wd40 on them, add speed cream after wd40 breaks down, or take them out and do a full cleaning on them, you will be riding with no lube, which is what ruins them. As long as you are spraying them daily, you'll be fine. Wd stands for "water displacement." So in wet environment protects from rusting/corrosion but will also "displace" your normal lubricant. I usually do a deep clean and add speed cream once every 2 weeks, but after 2 weeks, start spraying wd40 on them daily for a few days as a pre cleaning until I get a chance to pull em out and deep clean. Wd40 is a "quick fix" not a long lasting lube, but works great for what it does. Imo is much better for shieldless bearings since it allows crap to come out of bearings. If you are going to keep shields on, its not as good since it breaks down lube and doesn't allow particulate to come out as easily. In short
    Wd40 only lasts a day before its completely broken down and evaporated, While cleaning then adding speed cream can last weeks, but both work. Taking care of bearings, they can last near forever, but negligence is what ruins them. I'm still skating a 10 yr old set of lucky swiss and they still spin like butter, but when I first started skating blew out some bones cuz I didn't understand the importance of keeping them clean and lubed.

    • @edvolley825
      @edvolley825 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      WD is fish oil, organic, lubes are mineral , and have viscosity. WD breakdowns very quickly particularly under heat; so in short regular bursts WD will work, but is not ideal.
