Spiral Buffet: The Most Amazing Buffet I've Ever Seen! (Manila Day 4)

On Day 4 in Manila, Sofitel Philippine Plaza in Manila invited us to go to their Spiral Sunday brunch / lunch buffet. Since I had already heard about it from others, many of whom said it was the best and grandest buffet in the Philippines, and maybe in Asia, I was pretty excited to have the chance to try it out.
We arrived right as the sunday lunch buffet started, right at 12 noon, and we first met the manager who showed us around the buffet, and explained the philosophy of the buffet. At Spiral Buffet in Manila they have 21 different food ateliers, which is French means artisan workstations - so at the buffet they mean different types of cuisine and stalls. So there are basically 21 different types of cuisine to choose from, French, Indian, Filipino, Thai, and a full cheese room, and fresh cold Japanese section as well. As soon as we sat down, we were poured a glass of champagne to begin with. There are two different prices for the sunday brunch buffet - you can either go with unlimited alcoholic beverages (champagne and wine) or you can go without alcohol. If you’re interested in drinking, the former option is a great option.
I had no clue where to start eating, so I just went with the food that was the closest to our table - the cold Japanese atelier - including a full tuna sitting and waiting to be sliced by the piece. After my plate of sushi and sashimi and caviar, I then had a plate of Filipino food including crocodile adobo and the infamous balut - a fertilized boiled egg - all of which were pretty good. I then had a plate of Indian food, French food, and some Japanese hot food too.
What I really liked about Spiral Buffet at Sofitel Manila is that even though it was so incredibly grand and so extensive, the food was cooked in small batches, so it wouldn’t sit too long before being finished off. This way, the food remained fresh, and hot, and though it was a buffet, the quality was truly top notch. I haven’t been to too many hotel buffets in my life, but this was easily one of the best buffets I’ve ever seen or eaten at.

My husband and I have been in the Philippines for 3 weeks now and the Sofitel was by far the nicest hotel we stayed at in the Philippines. The food was phenomenal the service was unsurpassed and the hotel an it’s amenities were sublime. My husband and I as we were indulging for breakfast even mentioned to one another how Mark should go do I review on the food at the hotel if he hadn’t already done so only to find out days later that he did! This hotel is a must go for both its decadent food choices and it’s grandeur!

I really wanted to agree with you but after I visited this buffet in December 2019 I was not impressed. I will attest to the hotel itself being absolutely amazing but the buffet was comparable (and maybe even less than) most vegas buffets. The seafood got my whole party sick the next day, the selection of food was not as big as it seemed in the video, and the diversity of food was quite dissapointing; it was no where near as diverse as the food mark presented in this video. I think the best thing they had during my visit was their indian section, where I went back multiple times to load up on the roasted lamb, daal makhani and parathas. Even the dessert section, other than the halo halo station, was sub par. I really hope that I jsut so happen to visit on an off day for them because for $80 my budget would've been better spent towards other ventures while I was there.

I like Mark's mannerism that every time he put the food into his mouth there is something in him that kind of sensational feeling. He always moved his head down toward his left or right and said wowwww. And I really like it. Keep it up, Mark Weins.

I spent 8 weeks at the Sofitel when I was there back in 2009 and gained about 30 pounds from eating at the buffet during that time. Was a beautiful place. I was there for work and my office was over beside the Mall of Asia.
Even most of the filipinos never had a chance to eat at sofitel's buffet. Lucky you!

Mark, you're the only YT that I follow. I just love how you are so gracious and how you describe how the food taste like. Not like others who just skip the detailed descriptions on what they are eating and give great remarks. I love how you are educated on different history tidbits, facts and your food experiences at different countries are so priceless. Keep it up! +lavista4u I like some of the beaches in the Phili. Back in 2004 I went to Thailand and on to Ko Phi Phi. The beach there did not have lots of people. There was a movie named The Beach (2000). After that movie Ko Phi Phi is now a crowded resort. I was on a beach in Puerto Princesa, Palawan with my girlfriend there were just three boys there who asked me if they can have a picture with her. I agreed. We basically had the beach to ourselves. You have to be lucky to find that in Thailand. Also the beaches on Panglao island are not swamped and crowded with tourists. I think it is in Boracay but I've never been there.

XiaNg Ys I was in Bali this past July. There was a fair amount of people but nothing as crowded as some of the main beach resorts in Thailand. I've not been to Sabah.
sabah is near palawan .. maybe it also similar to ph everyone come to sabah is for diving .paradise nature scenery

As a psychology teacher i can say that its because at first you think that he is faking it, but when time progresses and when you see that he repeats the same reaction you know that he isn;t faking it or changing for the sake of chanign, but he does it because that's the way he enjoys food, so you will be able to enjoy it with him.

I was watching Mikey Chen's Strictly Dumpling videos before I discovered Mark Wiens with Mike in Thailand. I alternate between the two of them depending on my mood. I find that both are able to communicate their experiences in vivid language. Thanks to their videos I get to tour the globe with them and imagine the nuances of flavors and textures of every dish they taste. When I have to eat alone at home I find myself preparing my meal in anticipation of sitting down to watch their videos in Mexico or Lebanon. Somehow every bite of my meal is enhanced by the gorgeous plates of food I see before me, all on video. Thanks, Mark, Ying and Micah.
I always visit sofitel eversince i was 4 until i turned 10 and it always rained everytime i came that's why I never get to swim in their pool. now that I'm 12 i miss going to hotels and swimming in pools. btw thanks for visiting PH! its always more fun in the Philippines!!

Cordelia Enid H That's true. :) It's definitely on my bucket list, but it's a little expensive for people in Manila. It's the equivalent of about half a month's pay on minimum wage. Anyone with a decent job can afford it, but it seems kind of wasteful to spend so much on just one meal. :)

Mark I really appreciate that you compare the foods you eat to more similar dishes other people are used to. I think by doing that gives people the confidence to expand their pallet because it allows us to be open minded since you compare and describe dishes that most of us eat so there's familiarity there.
