  • Dissolved Styrofoam or Plastic Coating of Products | Disolve Styrofoam for plastic coating of your proyects
    Hello.
    Previously, almost every homemade product I had to cover with several coats of varnish. This is especially necessary for products that are installed outdoors. But varnishes do not always perform their protective functions. For example, sometimes there are varnishes that do not dry completely and can still stick for a very long time. Sometimes it happens that the individual parts of the product are glued together, and then come off from each other with paint. It also happens that the product is glued to the surface on which it stands.
    To avoid the problems described above, I cover my products with dissolved styrofoam. Thanks to the thin layer of plastic that remains after applying the solution, my products get excellent protection from rain, wind and other vagaries of nature.
    In this video you will see how to dissolve the styrofoam for use as a protective layer for products.
    Dissolved styrofoam is very firmly adhered to the surface of the product and is the best substitute for varnish.

    Lol, did this 45 years ago, the concrete on the garage floor used to powder and my Dad and i mixed up a whole lot of Styrofoam and lacquer thinners, ended up with about 2 gallons of the mix, still on the floor today and still holding up.

      That's pretty cool. So it ages and keeps well, at least indoors away from UV? Decent spill resistance I imagine?
      I'm kind of playing with the idea of coating the garage walls (and tablers, shelves ect.) with a layer of this over very cheap paint - with the idea being that I could just hose the whole area down if needed.
      Thinner can be gotten in bulk pretty cheap, and styroffoam is basically sourced for free if you know where to look. Good water-repelling outdoor paint or polyurethane on the other hand is pretty expensive where I live, literally on the order of 10x the price of cheap indoor wall paint.
      I will definitely do some smaller scale tests on this and see how well it resists some common "garage spills".
      The thing I really love about DIY solutions like this is you can just make a dollar's worth more if you need small repairs or expansions, and understanding what the product is really made of is important.

    Acetone is the solvent to use. When it evaporates it leaves no residue.
    I have used it and styrofoam for years. If you try to use the resulting gloop in a mould, then when it dries you will see huge amounts of small air bubbles still trapped inside - this is the milky look when it's a dense globby mess. In the video the mixture is quite runny. You can make it as solid as you like - just use less acetone. You need a vacuum pump if you want to degass it and use it as a solid moulding material.
    One last thing - I have found it breaks down in direct sunlight and becomes quite brittle, but as a thin coat, as used here, its probably ok.

      I tried using lacquer thinner at first. It just melted the styrofoam into a ball of putty-like stuff and wouldn’t disperse into the thinner. I think you could use it in a mold, not sure. I’m going to try it today. It’s still white, so I suspect it’s got a lot of air in it still, but I think it will work.

      @@ATinyPillow sure. In this case thats this artists purpose. But people apply clear sealers to their work for lotsa reasons OTHER than just waterproofing. Right? They want a consistent uniform sheen to the work - for example.. or - they want to protect an otherwise fragile finish. Waterproofing is one pf many. THE POINT IS - dont apply this coating to anything that is susceptible to solvents.

      @@stephenm103 Hi! I came here from another video where the maker created a thickened paste which was used as a glue. He then made a patch out of it and put it on a hole he made on a plastic jug. After letting it cure, he showed how it was a permanent fix to the plastic container. Personally I wouldn't drink that water, but as a fix on a jug for handwashing water, a laundry liquid detergent jug, etc. I think it was an excellent idea. Got me thinking of going around town and collecting styrofoam just t make up this glue/bonding stuff and keep the styrofoam out of the landfill...

    Very good video and useful . I used this method when I built my first model RC airplanes, It seals balsa wood really well (I was ten years old!) I was a bit confused by the title of this video. May be it should say
    “Disolve Styrofoam for plastic coating of your proyects "

      @melstar8579 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I had to re-read the title a couple of times, which is what I clicked on it. I think it's missing the 'f' is supposed to say For , not Or.

      Raymond, for balsa glueing, now i find abroad ( even in non-modellistic shops ) the following glue : "UHU - Hart" that has the same smell and appearance of that glue used when i was a boy ( now i am ... a bit older 😆 ); it was selled in anonymous little bottles only in modellistic shops, with clear appearance as water ( but much more dense ), i always heard it was made with celluloid dissolved in acethone ...
      UHU - Hart is just the same, you can buy also from internet in 125 ml or 33 ml tube ...
      At that time i used to diluite the "anonymous" version with acethone to give a better resistance and a finish to the silk-paper around the wings ...
      I'm much interested in this glue made from styrofoam in acethone, i just only fear about burning styrofoam, i heard of very tossic fumes from an odd combustion ...
      My best greatings from Italy ...

    Hello, I really like this idea, but I’ve been unable to get the styrofoam to the consistency shown to be able to apply with a brush. Instead what I get is more of a play-doh like clump. I’ve tried with both pure acetone and Klean Strip Lacquer Thinner. Any ideas as to what I’m doing wrong? Thank you.

    • @CheerfulCraft
      @CheerfulCraft  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. You're doing everything right. The main problem is the solvent. I recommend you to go to a store that sells solvents and ask the sellers which solvent is best for dissolving Styrofoam. Then buy the smallest amount of solvent and try dissolving the Styrofoam in it.

    I have several 3-4 foot styrofoam statues for Halloween and transfer also to Christmas. They are stored for 9 months,m but because of size, take up too much room. I want to create a strong plastic form of each of them. It’s not so much about details, but I’d like to do my best to create the forms, and ultimately make them strong enough like a thermoplastic similar to Halloween pumpkin candy pales, which wont be destroyed by the weather and then ultimately toss the styrofoam. My only thoughts are to create fiberglass shells, or to create silicone rubber molds followed by putting the plastic inside, but every process, is a little too pro, for the process and requires too much money. I’m really looking for the cheapest way out of making each of these 3-4 foot statues at no cost, which are lighter, hollow, maybe translucent for light and can store easily. Do you have any suggestions?

    Your idea is super. Please tell the pros and cons of this coating. How do you wash the brush?? With which you wash it?? Can we reuse the brush or we have to throw it. What happens If this solution falls on skin??

    • @CheerfulCraft
      @CheerfulCraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. Thanks for the comment and question.
      You can wash the brush in a clean solvent, but I do not wash it, I just put it to dry. Then, before using it again, I put the brush in the solution for a few minutes. There the plastic dissolves and the brush is ready for use again.
      Use dissolved foam carefully. The rules for using this solution are the same as with regular super glue. It is desirable to prevent the solution from getting on the skin and especially in the eyes. But if the solution gets on the skin, then in a few seconds the solvent dries and a thin layer of plastic remains on the skin. It can be removed with your fingers. It is easier to do it under running water. If the solution gets into the eyes, rinse them with water as soon as possible and consult a doctor if necessary.
