  • This video touches on my thoughts about this bike after owning it for a year.
    However I quickly noticed that if I was to go into details this video would become very long.
    So this is just some of thoughts and I will probably do a series of videos where I discuss a part of the bike, and my mods in detail.

    If you are a heavy rider, and having trouble finding he correct suspension level for you, perhaps consider going to the suspension mode on your dash (button on left handlebar with what looks like a shock spring icon) and set your suspension for two helmets. That's the setting people use when they take on a passenger. This will stiffen your suspension just right. It's only a thought.

      I tried that, didn't help fo me. I didn't like the way the bike rode in that mode.
      My forks were almost bottoming out on regular basis, and I did bottom them out on a few occasions too.
      I have since making this video got a set of Wilbers fork springs and had the rear shock rebuilt by Wilbers. Very happy with the bike now.

    I have a ‘17 without the electronic suspension, and weigh 108kg. Not had a problem with it being too soft - even on track it seems fine. I went for that model because I had read the electronic version lacks feel with heavier riders. Looking forward to the new R based on the new RR, as that electronic suspension is more easily adjusted for rider mass.

    Have you got the semi active with manual preload if you have wind preload a turn in tighter , preload is a necessity for weight and rebound and compression are subjective to how you ride 👍🏼👌🏼

      It is intentionally not filming the cluster. People in my country have been given tickets and even lost their license from TH-cam videos that the Police has seen.
      I'm not someone who rides like a maniac, but from time to time I may be going slightly above the legal limit, I just don't want to take the chance if one of my videos go viral that the Police come knocking on my door.

    Thanks for posting. Video is really well made and clear! Im looking around for a new bike and welcome your feedback on the S1000R. Im told the vibration has been addressed in newer models? Does the bike over heat for you in hot stand still traffic (if you are unfortunate enough to get any?) Thanks

    • @850bimmer
      @850bimmer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi.
      Yes, some changes were made to the bar clamp on the -17 model, but according to owners on the forums that have made the swap there is no real difference.
      Easiest thing to do is to get heavier bar weights.
      I plan to do a video on my bar end mirrors where I will address the vibrations and different options. And things to do when getting the Rizoma mirrors.
      But the short answer is to get heavier bar end weights (stock are 200grams).
      I have never had it over heat, It's got quite hot, but I think this is somewhat normal for these bikes.
      Riding along the road I typically have 85-95c, riding in the city without much traffic is 100c +/-2, highest I have seen is 106c, but I believe forum users have reported up towards 109c in congested big city traffic, but that is not considered over heating, fans kick in at 100c to prevent overheating.
      I checked my manual but it doesn't specify a overheating temperature, just that you get a red flashing light when it happens.

    • @forsetishay
      @forsetishay 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the over-heating issue: I've had the bike (2016 model) during summer in a hot climate and ridden both between (rather than in) traffic and on the highway. With city riding it hovers around 100 degrees celsius, sometimes going as high as 105, and on the highway it's low- to mid-90s. Not as hot as some other litre bikes, but the frame does carry some heat to the thighs. As long as you don't plan on riding in shorts you won't notice it much, and you can always help the airflow with a quick twist of the throttle.

    • @850bimmer
      @850bimmer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is right, but I think the fans blow a fair bit of hot air onto your thigh when they start (above 100c) as the exhaust is coming through the "shark gills" in the side fairings, especially the left one.

    I like the BMW. but the ZX14R is the best all around bike I have ever owned or rode. Easy to ride, very fast, pretty comfortable compared to the supersport bikes I have rode. and it corners much better than I expected. Only gets about 34 mpg but who cares I get a hell of a lot of smiles per gallon.

  • @sunnysocal07
    @sunnysocal07 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Im a bigger guys as well. On my ride yesterday I was thinking about the suspension. Have you tried changing the suspension to 2 person mode? I havent done it yet but in theory I would think it would work. If you hold the suspension button down the display will show 2 riders. I put Rhino bar ends (heavier than stock) as well as grip puppies and that helped the lower the vibration.

    • @850bimmer
      @850bimmer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have the preload to max front and rer, and I have tried the 2 person mode, but it did not help much, it did stiffen up the rear a little, but it did not have the desired effect as it only changes the valving in the shock, when the problem is the spring. if anything it made the bike even more uncomfortable to ride.
      I'm 105kg/230lbs with gear. And my theory, which I will discuss in a planned suspension video, is that because the spring is too soft, the shock goes rock hard on fast compressions because the oil can't flow through the valves fast enough.
      Yeah, the Rhino bar ends are better from what I understand, they are over 300grams, and the stock are 200grams.

      @sunnysocal07 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to know. Ill give it a go as well. Was just a thought yesterday. Im 230 with no gear so we are pretty close and Ill be interested in what you think afterward the mods you make. Great videos!

      As far as I have found out the stock fork springs are 0,85kg/mm.
      Someone calculated for my weight that I would need 1,1kg/mm springs.
      So far I haven't found anyone who has that stiff springs, stiffest I have found are 0,95kg/mm, any stiffer and I need to have them custom made.
      However I think the 0.95kg/mm will make a significant improvement but won't be perfect, not sure I will get correct sag, but I should be getting closer.
      Have also read the people who have put in very stiff springs started having issues with the hydraulic part not coping well with the too stiff springs.
      The rear appears to be 8.5kg/mm, and I plan to go to a 9.5 or 10.0kg/mm spring.
      I think with the 9.5 I should be able to get the correct sag, but need a lot of preload, and with a 10.0 I may not need much preload at all to make it work.
      Not looking for a track setup, but a better functional street setup.
      And it may be August before I get this done.

    • @sunnysocal07
      @sunnysocal07 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea I may wait a little while on that myself until I really notice it being a problem. I had a zx 636 and a FZ 09. Coming off that FZ-09 the BMW has a pretty incredible suspension comparatively so I may be happy with it for some time.

    • @850bimmer
      @850bimmer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I came from an FZ-07, and that bike did not have a suspension for us bigger people. But Yamaha appears to have softer suspension on all their bikes. The BMW was good at first, but as I got used to it and started pushing the flaws became obvious, I have no confidence pushing this bike through corners. And I'm certainly not taking this bike to the track with this suspension. I'm bottoming out the forks riding semi hard on the street.

      Vlada P it's Rizoma reverse retro, you can get them various places on the internet, but they are expensive. I had some weights made up to fit the Rizoma size. But I ended up adding the original BMW ones as well due to handlebar vibrations. I plan to make a video on the mirrors shortly.

    Hi bimmer, regarding the consuption....it is very good if you take into account how strong the bike is and what the consumption on other 160hp bikes is.

    • @850bimmer
      @850bimmer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My comment was more of the general kind, and what to expect from this bike. Many consider a motorcycle a more environmentally friendly vehicle than a car, lower consumption is one factor they bring forward.
      Well, my S1000R uses roughly the same amount of fuel as a small- or mid-sized car and that will seat up to 5 people. My S1000R, will seat two at best.
      But I really don't care about consumption, I ride bikes to enjoy myself. Some people might be interested in the consumption though so I thought I'd mention it.
      Thanks for your comment :)

    Will progressive springs/shock (i.e. Hyperpro) for your weight function properly with the electronic aids?
    Upgraded shock/springs on my R9T worked wonders but it doesn't have any rider aids except ABS.

    • @850bimmer
      @850bimmer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are very few options out there for the electronic damper systems. Ohlins and K-tech don't have anything.
      Since filming this I have got new fork springs from Wilbers for my weight installed, however they threw the balance of the bike off completely. In a week or so I should get a rear Wilbers shock in the mail. I managed to find a used rear DDC shock on ebay, and had this sent to Wilbers for a €999 rebuild. It will come with new spring rebuilt hydraulics and electronics, and manual adjustment for fast and slow compression. Not cheap, but hopefully worth it.
      I'm planning on doing a suspension video series once all the parts come in.

    • @850bimmer
      @850bimmer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Og you are planning on getting an S1000R, and you are a fair bit off the 85kg/187lbs target the bike is built for. It might be best to go for a bike with the conventional suspension, not the electronic DCC.
      The conventional suspension should be easier to adjust get something that works, or you get new springs, which are supplied by most companies, and won't cost you much.
      My "project" has so far set me back 999 euro for the shock, 160 euro for the used shock from eBay, and 139 euros for the fork springs, plus shipping, tax and install. Thats 1300++ euros.
      For a conventional setup, you could probably get a set of springs for 300 euros.

    • @850bimmer
      @850bimmer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      thijs1000000 yes. It was terrible. Anything below 30-40kph 20-30mph I would run 1st gear. After I put a custom tune on it is nice and smooth. The are fueled very lean down low from the factory and the o2 sensor makes it really bad. A tune will make this a whole new bike. And I gained 8hp as a bonus.

    maybe they got rid of of those disadvantages on the 2016 and up models.

    • @850bimmer
      @850bimmer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the 2017 the bike saw some changes, some rubber cushions were added to the bars to limit vibration, but according to people who changed their bike for a -17, or test rode one, they claimed it's no difference.
      The suspension was untouched but the -RR DDC did get some software options to adjust compression and rebound but not the -R.
      I have now changed out my suspension over the winter break, and will put out some new videos on the suspension, hopefully in the next month or so.

      @850bimmer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I'm Norwegian actually. Live on the south west coast.
      Commuting is fine, but my commute is just 20km. I have done 300km in a day, and that was borderline painful for me. I'm planning on getting a comfort seat for the -18 years season.
      Haven't done much riding with a passenger to be honest, but the passenger seat is not very comfortable, and very small. I have got complaints on that, fine for a 20-30km ride, but I would not go on a full day trip on the stock seat unless your passenger is small and light weight.
      The bike handles great with a passenger, the DDC suspension have a setting for riding with or without passenger.
