- The Dragon Pandemic has started! 🐲 The highly anticipated Perth Mint Lunar Year of the Dragon coins have just been released. This typically marks the beginning of buying frenzy for lunar coins, and as with previous issues, sees numerous reviews, comments and predictions from the precious metals community.
Unlike most years before, the buzz amongst the community have been fairly mixed, with many sharing their disapproval with the design of the dragon. Content creators have shared similar sentiments so with the arrival of these Dragons, I wasted no time in getting a few so that I can share my thoughts on this issue.
To be honest (I mentioned this in the video), I thought the coin looked better in my hands than in the pictures released by the Mint. The design looks very different from the previous Lunars and if I didn't know any better, I would have assumed this Dragon is from a different series.

The Perth Mint is still my favorite even with this confusing dragon. It's like that girl that did you wrong, but you still love her. Also I have completed series I & II, so I can't stop now.

Its a water dragon so i think its water coming out of its mouth. I have enjoyed collecting this series and liked the adult and infant theme, the dragon does look out of place, perth mint have done this type of dragon design to death already and should have kept to the formula already established for this series, they could of had the dragon protecting an egg if an infant dragon did not fit but i personally do not like the design.

I’m sure you will, I know from your vids that you do collect these Lunars. So despite how disappointed we are with the design, we still have to get at least one to keep our set updated. Perhaps thats why PM released the Dragons in the first place, they know collectors like us have no choice but to buy these new coins ✌🏻😊

Great upload! I totally agree, there should have been 2 dragons! Where did you get your red/clear acrylic coin cases? I have seen a few online but they are not big enough to house Perth Mint Lunar III coins. Thanks!!

I recently did a video showing off the gold version of the 2024, and commented that I didn't even order the silver one because I didn't like the design.

this lunar III has been so strange to me from the beginning. but.... I can't stop buying them too I agree that the design of other PM coins is or was much better.

It took me a while to warm up to the silver design but I’ve come to love it overtime more so than the gold/platinum

They are all beautiful. But I agree that the newest coins dragon leaves a little to be desired. Are all 5 toed? The older one looks more Dilong style and the new one more Fucanglong. What are their styles? Sorry for all the questions!

I was surpirsed when i was looking to buy them that the design of the Gold coins is different.
Persoanlly i like the Gold coin design a bit better, but thats the only format that it comes in.

Yes! the design of the gold Lunars are very different from the silvers. I believe all the previous gold issues have depiction of a single lunar animal and this new gold Dragon is the same. A much nicer coin than the silvers, thats for sure. Cheers and keep stacking ‘em dragons buddy 🐉✌🏻

I like the design on the gold and platinum. I purchased a gold 1/4 ounce and a Platinum 1 oz. I don't understand why Perth Mint keeps such few coins in Australia. The U.S bullion dealers have plenty available while they're scare in Australia.

Always a great intro & presentation S2G, I get you are collecting the lunar series so it's a must have silver coin regardless, it is also a quality Perth Mint product but the design just doesn't do it for me, I find it very confusing and lacklustre, the 2012 dragon has greater clarity & looks like a dragon, thanks for sharing your thoughts. No worries Peter, this was fun video to create. Lost to talk about and I was happy I could share my two Lunar sets. The Lunar series II was certainly a challenge to complete (some of the coins are really expensive) but, I was happy I could compare the older 2012 with this new 2024. The silver dragon looks great in colour but the design is totally lost on the bullion coin. The design relies too heavily on colour for body parts separation and in the absence of colour the eyes struggle to work out what's going on.
I was super excited to get a 1kg version ..until I saw the design. The gold dragon was exactly what I expected the silver one to look like.

@@send2georgie_S2G I have the 1 oz colour version arriving in the next few days and if they do a 1kg coloured version It will look stunning and I would be eager to buy. Non coloured 1kg? ..at this stage not sure, I will have to wait and see how I feel, I've heard the 1kg will be out around April time 'ish.
..maybe having a 1oz coloured next to a 1kg non coloured will make it easier for the eyes to better comprehend the design on the 1kg.

The Perth Mint is the only release I have found and I have not purchased as I like to find the design that I like the most. I really am not in love with this design...The orientation of the legs is odd. I would love to see the dragon as told in the lunar story where he is not first as he stoped to help some villagers. I think this shows the luck, prosperity, and charity that can be associated with the dragon.

They didn't need to strike the word "dragon" on it. Also, based on the series 2 version, they might change the mintage. None of them will be as sought after as the series 1 IMO.

Its a water dragon so no flames. Also, to get 2 dragons on there they would've had to minimize too much detail. I love it even though it doesn't fit the set perfectly.

Chinese mythology said that a koi became a water dragon and a snake become a fire dragon. They don’t have babies, maybe that’s why this coin only show 1 dragon.

The new Chinese Myths & Legends Series debuts in 2021 with the image of the Chinese dragon. The dragon has featured on countless collections from the Perth Mint in recent years. This new series can trace its roots to the 2017 introduction of the Dragon-and-Phoenix bullion coins. In this new collection, the dragon features on its own on the reverse. Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of 2021 Australian Silver Chinese Myths & Legends Dragon Coins. This sixth-generation effigy of the Queen was created by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint in 2015 and debuted on Perth Mint coinage in 2018. It is now the primary effigy of the Queen in use on Australian coinage and depicts the monarch at the age of 89. A Chinese dragon is featured within its celestial realm on the reverse side of the 2021 1 oz Chinese Myths & Legends Dragon Coin. The Chinese dragon is also depicted as a serpent-like beast. In Chinese mythology, the beasts are associated with the clouds as the celestial world is considered the home of the dragon.

I love Lunar series 1. Simple and elegant. Series 2 are kinda OK. Dragon, Tiger, Snakes, Horse and Rooster were great. Lunar Series 3 was meh all around.
I was exited for the 2024 Lunar Dragon, but as soon as I saw both the silver and gold designs I was very disappointed. I didn't even get one. The gold dragon is worse in my opinion. It looked like a short-legged comical dragon running. Not a majestic mystical animal soaring in the sky.
But I love the Dragon and Koi design. I got 30 of the plain and 20 of the green. The green Dragon and Koi coloring will change its hue when you move it around in the light.
Yes I agree, the Lunar I’s were the best. But would love to have a set but premiums are just to high. I started with the Lunar II’s with the Rooster. Didn’t take me long to complete the set you saw on screen.

The Lunar Series in general doesn't float my boat. It really does look out of place. Hopefully 2025's design makes up for it.

There is another dragon design for Lunar Series III Perth Mint coloured coin. The Red Dragon design. So there are two designs in total for the year of dragon. How unique.

I prefer the dragon from 2012 because it looks like a traditional dragon in it's body form. The new designed dragon's body looks more like a tangled, reptilian octopus. This is just my humble, unbiased opinion.

I didn't like the photo of the dragon. It has grown on me a little but nothing spectacular. I have however had some lucky days winning money since getting the coins so maybe 2024 will be good. I love the Gold design very much but the coin is too small.

In my opinion the 2024 Samoa Year of the Dragon coin looks much better.

Personally I think it's hard to work out that it's even a dragon. Not a coin on my shopping list.
I totally agree on the bullion coin, have you seen the colour version? Once I did, I understand. It's a great design for colour but gets totally lost when not in colour.

Yeah, I really dislike the design. It's awful. Even the baby dragon 1/2 oz colored silver design looks terrible.

@@send2georgie_S2G In silver, side by side I like the Scottsdale Mint Samoa coin and Golden State Mint dragon rounds better. Especially when considering the premium for the Perth coin.

The Lunar silver dragon doesn't match the set and looks totally out of place compared to the others. They ruined the theme IMO, I'm selling the rest of my lunars.
