    I'm a few years late on comments but what the heck. My X-type (3.0 AWD) is 18 years old (2004), I've had it for nearly 12 years and it has over 200,000 miles. Regular issues with all cars, replacing tires, brakes, shocks, battery, that's pretty much it. It's been a great experience. Some things get worn over time depending on the level of care, seats (getting in and out), headliner (glue around the edges drying out), louvers for the defrost on the front window getting warped, headlights frosting. Notice that I didn't mention anything mechanical!

      Just passed 21 on my 2001 X-Type 3.0 Sport which I've had from new. 110k miles now. As you say, very reliable car. You get the things you expect to wear out. My headliner is still good though. That's an odd one.

    I’m picking up a beautiful 54 plate. 2.5 sport saloon in light blue with the optional alloys, 125.000 miles, only issues are on the interior, new headlining needed and new gear knob, plus drivers seat bolster needs repairing. But the car is only £1600. I’m very excited.

    All these so called Jag problems are perfectly normal on any car as they get old. They are all wear and tear not just tyres, exhaust and brakes. All cars are inherently unreliable (even Toyota), some cars are less unreliable and sometimes you get lucky. Let’s face it if I have to spend money paying to repair a car I would rather it be something I like and enjoy than some everyday piece of rubbish.

    The problem with X types is they are a lovely drive and very affordable, but sadly a pain to maintain in later life. However sharing information like this is a great way to keep these cats alive! Just starting to have issues with mine after 6 years of trouble free ownership. Rear passenger side tyre was shredded on the inside edge and annoying harmonic vibration present after new tyre fitted. The X type estate is a great looking car and even though it's an 07 plate it gets some admiring looks. Not bad economy too averaging 52-4 mpg on a motorway run. Any hints or tips on rear geometry adjustment and maintenance gratefully received.

    My question is a very simple one:
    What would you estimate the car has cost you in regards to faults/repairs during your ownership?

    Our 04 X-Type 3.0 AWD US car. It only had one issue and it was the cable between battery and alternator. When hot, the cable would not allow the alternator to charge the battery.

    Another common fault is the alarm sounder going short circuit. It's the one that resides in the front left wing. The Ni-Cad back-up battery that's inside the sounder shorts out and blows the fuse that controls the centre console radio unit. Just turn the steering all of the way to the right. Take out the panel screw in the wheel well cover. Reach in and unplug the sounder. Fit a fresh fuse and off you go!

    Have had 2 estate 2.0ds in the last 13 years. An 05 and 06. 3 egr hoses, fitted myself. A/C compressor (£120 at Autodoc) . Clutch (£350 Autodoc +£300 fitting. 2 rear wheel bearings (£60 Autodoc, fitted myself) Dodgy speedo at the moment, think it is a dry solder somewhere, give the dash a thump, and it works. New serpentine belt (£12 Autodoc, fitted myself, but a real pain). Actuator on turbo, bought a complete 2nd hand turbo for £250, so used the actuat and have a spare turbo. A problem with the handbrake on both. One set of injectors. A set of disks all round with pads. In 13 years, I can wear that. Cheap motoring. All easy fixes.

    You are right about dealership service...They overcharge and don't diagnose and repair... they will give a cursory diagnosis and replace with new parts.
    A decent welder can replace your sills at a very reasonable price... rusted sills are not a killer.

    If the turbo is sooted up it can be cleaned, if the actuator has failed it can be repaired, commonly the solder points on the circuit board that feed the motor fail and just need re soldering, if the actuator motor has failed due to soothed up turbo making it burn out, turbo vanes will repair it for £88, turbo must be cleaned before fitting repaired actuator.

    I recently purchased a 2003 X-Type with the 2.5 litre V6 motor and automatic transmission. It's only traveled about 120,000 km (74,000 miles) It's in overall very good condition and is a nice car to drive. However, I've noticed a couple of annoying features, which are: (1) The passenger side door sill is loose at the front end. I am thinking to fix this I could drill a couple of holes on the top of the sill below the hinge portion of the front passenger door and use self tapping screws to secure the loose portion of the sill to the car body. (2) An occasional creaking noise from the steering wheel/column at low speed, (3) The Rear Parking Sensor's don't appear to work, and (4) An occasional very noticeable "thud" from rear of car which is especially noticeable on uneven roads. This "thudding" noise is not noticeable when driving on motorways or well paved roads. Would appreciate any advice or comments on these issues.

    I got an 03 ranger and when I got it, it was more rust than truck and the transmission was slipping and about to go and the truck had 100k mikes on it, still have it I did a ton of body work on it and now it has very little body rust and my buddy owns a garage so he over hauled my transmission for free labor I had to pay for parts tho, I also had to replace the ball joints on the car too, the original owner never greased them and they where wearing the tires so bad, now it's a solid truck basically brand new now put about 17k miles on it since I've had it, I change my oil ever 4-5 months to keep it running at peak efficiency, I do it myself tho to save money

    New problem now that the new radiator solved the over heating problem. When the car is cold and I start it it revs very high up to 2k RPM, as the engine temperature heats up it will flash gear box fault and engine fault probelms, However shut off the car wait about 1 minute by that time the engine temperature needle reaches the middle, then all problems suddenly go away. I went ahead and cleaned the all the leaves dust and debri and installed a new cabin air filter. One day when driving on a 90 degree summer day hot day i was driving 70 mph and the rear window was foggy so i press the rear defrost button suddenly the car jumped into limp mode. I had to pull over wait 5 min for all to dry and didnt press the button again. it worked and i drive 60 miles back home. I assuming some coolant leak hit some belt some where and causes some wierd issue, yes I checked grounds and replaced the MAF and new Throttle body. Any thoughts would be greatly appriciated.

    X-Type 2.0D owner
    Things I checked before buying;
    Clutch had been replaced for the transit (shhh) clutch.
    Not too much rust (mine had none) to the wheel arches or under the door sills (you need to get on the ground and look under here)
    Things I've done by choice;
    Blanked off the EGR
    Full service every year (really easy and if you don't do this yourself then you should be ashamed)
    Replaced the EGR hose with a more modern silicon one.
    Things I've HAD to get done;
    New water and oil thermostat (cheap job)
    New water pump (low-level disaster)
    New alternator belt (low-level disaster)
    New aux belt tensioner (chosen job)
    Turbo Cleaned (FOR THE LOVE OF GOD USE WYNNS TURBO CLEANER BEFORE PAYING FOR A CLEAN/REPLACEMENT/RECONDITION - USE TWO BOTTLES WITH A FULL TANK - If you act soon enough, this will fix the 'engine management/limp mode' problem 9 times out of 10)
    2 and a half years though and it's without a doubt a labour of love, but I do love this car.

    Hi ,ex Jag technician hear, worked on jags from 1963 until 2011, i did the factory introduction pre launch on the x- type at Gaydon.
    Rumble from engine, yes tensioner & pully, jag had a recall on this, i did quite a few.
    ECU reflashes , yes did all those.
    EGR valves , yes did those, used to run car at speed in low gear up hill untill it blasted black shit out back on deisel.
    Aspirator, Yes did those for being noisy.
    What else > , water pump leak, front & rear anti roll bar bushes and links, front & rear suspension arms & bushes,
    Rear shocks leaking, in tank fuel pump fail, brake discs & pads, fuel flap not opening and remote cable seized, boot latch whirring noise,
    Door handles not lifting up enough to open door, door locks bouncing- faulty latches, boot latch whirring noise,
    Wearing tyres badly, electrical faults diagnostics , on early ones, manual cars were rolling away, factory recall, hand brake assemblies had to be replaced, oil leaking from transfere box flange, 4 wheel drive relucter rings rusted and broke away ( rotors on rear drive shafts ) causing warning light on and loss of 4 wheel drive. Hand brake cables seizing, water in boot causing reverse aid module to fail, washer pump failed + tubing kinked under scuttle tray causing no washers,
    And lots more, the deisel was worse, bottom line is it was a terrible car. Seem to rust on metal components under vehicle causing rusty seized nuts and bolts, some bolts had to be heated up or hack sawed off to remove. The car is basically a nightmare, we were told jaguar bought these engines for £250 and on the course they said they were made to last 7 years, (how they could know that i don't know), the thing is things keep going wrong.. Sorry but you asked.

      @@version736ha2 Everything has a price my friend. Yes Jaguar X type may have many problems during its life time. For me it is more trouble as here Jaguar is not very popular because of high fuel consumption and so it is hard to find a good mechanic for it. I had been denied by four mechanics and just by luck i found a perfect one.As long as you want to drive something timeless and masterpiece you will pay for it by spending more time and energy on mainteanence.When something is broken i have to order it from UK or a bigger city which means i won't use my car for a long time.
      What you get at this cost is timeless design and a true car design which does not have wrong proportions, it does not look like a toy or a japanese fish. I live in a touristic city and we have tourists coming from all around the world. Europeans, Russians, Arabs etc and all of them enjoy watching A jaguar pass by, it's engine roar etc no matter how much it is or old. You can buy a popular brand car and be like everyone else but the feelings will not come with them. It is a car that people and you will like to watch.
      If you are living in Europe or USA you will have an easier life with it.

    You were robbed . I had a replacement clutch and dual mass flywheel for £700. A friend had it done for £800. The crankshaft pulley cost about £200. The turbo actuator can be bought reconditioned for just over £100 and mine was fitted for £10 . Forte diesel additives (£26 for 2 which are put in the fuel tank then run for 100 miles at cruisng speed before a good blast. ) should be tried before replacing the actuator. I seem to remember a sligh stalling issue which needed the fuel filter changing. I did 186000 before swapping the 2005 for a 2009 .

    What is unsaid here but known by all is that the X Type is not, fundamentally, a Jaguar. My 2001 XJR definitely is. Though several years older than the X Type discussed here, and having travelled 154,000 miles to date, it continues to provide me with excellent performance and reliability. Thanks to preventive maintenance carried out by an honest, independent Jaguar-only service shop, the car has never let me down or experienced an expensive failure.

    Hey I have a Jaguar x type 2.5 liter gasoline engine car and it is a 2003 year model and it is loaded with options for the year and I’m very familiar with diesel engines and turbos and when you hear that wooshing sound it is the turbo spooling and when excellerating this loud wooshing sound is called turbo lag and when the turbo spools up from the exhaust gases, the engine gets boost and then creates the power the car needs to move and if there is a leak in the line is then it’s going to take more for the turbo to spool up

    I have a 2002 3.0 JAG X TYPE GAS with 142,000 miles e and here is my difficult issue, On a HOT day in Chicago 80-90 degrees outside in stop and go expressway traffic you can hear the fans click on and try to main the temperature a cool middle needle temperature. but then after a few more feet and crawl and 15 more minutes , The onboard needle will start heading to the red and the fans suddenly seem to quit working period. I followed jag x type forums and I replaced the thermostat, spark plugs, water pump and belt, new car battery, both catalytic converters, gas pump, knock sensor, evaporative tank, and upper intake manifold gaskets. I am able to start the AC fans when the car is cold no problem. However suddenly the temperature needle will start going in the red H area on the dash board. I shut of the car as to not let it over heat. If I wait 1 hour with the car shut off, it will start working again until I get on the express way of I sit in the sun Parking lot not moving at idle on neutral or park. It's as if something coolant is not circulating properly. Some guy in the jag forum had the same issue. it was caused by the defective inter cooling module. He replaced it and the problems seem to have gone away. I assume its an electrical problem or grounding issue ? I wonder if it will resolve my issue ? Any help would be greatly apricated.

    • @dwchester
      @dwchester 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The petrol models don't have a turbo so no intercooler. It's probably in need of a good flush through or maybe a faulty temperature sensor. If it was really overheating it would blow coolant out of the coolant reservoir outlet pipe and you would notice low coolant level. I had to replace my water pump but only because it was leaking, it was still working OK. How did you resolve this?

It is a much better and informative video even though it is only done from stills. I think you have watched 'Jaguar X Type - What can go wrong' - seen it has 135000 views and thought you would capitalise on it. This often happens on monetised channels and does nothing to help those who are looking for advice or help. With that I'll leave it.

  • @apassionfortangling3671
    @apassionfortangling3671 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The parts are relatively cheap if you can do the work yourself. They are a nice car, I have a 2.2 Sovereign estate, but compared to a Volvo V70 I had before not in the same class. Would I buy one again after owning one for a while. No. Owning a Jag gives a sense of pride but it is not a better car than a Mondeo or pug 406 estate. If you do really want one, check it extensively for rust, even if you think it's not old enough to be rusty.
