Here's Everything Thats WRONG With My CHEAP Jag S-Type

  • I couldn't let you guys down, a bunch of you tagged me in the Hoovie FB group saying I needed to buy this car, so I did. I messaged the seller immediately, went through another painful Marketplace transaction, but we ended up getting a deal made for the cheapest (and probably the ONLY) manual Jaguar S-Type in the country. This 2003 Jag S-Type is powered by the 3.0 Duratec, with a 5 speed manual behind it, and it's rear wheel drive! A pretty incredible package for how cheap the car was!

You can buy most of the bushings separately and inexpensively. They are probably junk, but I feel like a sawzall, torch, hammer, chisels, anir hammer, and my harbor freight 20 ton press could make it work and it would buy her some time for not much money. I need to do the rear suspension arms on my Super V8 soon, but she is no where near as bad as that S-type.

If you’re looking for the control arms you’ll notice a big difference in price between the first and second generation. On second generation suspension parts (03 and up) ford beefed up the suspension components due to the Jag type R. From the research I’ve done I believe first and second generation suspension parts are interchangeable.

You can get a whole load of those bushings mail order after market. Some of them are "performance" ones which may affect the ride quality but they are available, at least here in the UK. You can also get pretty cheap aftermarket whole components here. It might be worth mail ordering some stuff from the UK.
As for the coolant sensor, it's not normally the sensor which is bad, it's the float. The float can be replaced but it's tricky to do, and I got a whole aftermarket coolant tank for mine for about £50 which comes with the float...the sensor is separate and clicks in underneath. It's just a reed switch and doesn't normally go wrong. When my float went out it was ok when the engine was cold but as the coolant got hotter the float would lose its buoyancy and the light would come on.

That is a classic JAG. To me, that is easily a 10K car if fixed. The only thing I would worry about is inside the engine, transmission, etc.. As you noticed lots of people like that car. I bought a 1980 380SD Turbo Diesel (30 miles a gallon). I bought it for 2K and put 10K into it and then sold it. Saw one online for 57K. There is a market of older guys that want the cars they could not buy back in the day. In 1980 the Mercedes I bought was 30K (A fortune).

I recently got a jag s type 2003 from the auction 1,600. 110 thousand miles. Slight oil leaks on the valve cover corner bolts. Valve cover valves stuck in place with jb weld glue I guess. Needs tie rods replaced. Hood shocks. Original wipers which have an adapter that raise them up an inch, no where to be found. Changed all o2 sensors. Need sparks and all coils changed. Expansion tank just cracked so ordered one. Needed to buy a big battery, the right one, because it had a too small one. And the strangest thing is that RPM fluctuates while driving when cold, something like a feeling of hold and go when driving, and it goes away 20 minutes later. I hope is not a transmission issue. But I see it as a great machine worth fixing. I hope I don't have that much parts to fix like yours

As someone from the UK, those prices sound insane to me. Until about 5 years ago maybe, you would see these quite regularly on the roads, they are still out there but not very common. Regardless, wouldn't have thought that rear control arms and rear shocks would be $2000 however! I'm sure here in the UK and Europe they still make those parts and would be a few hundred tops and then just ship it to the us maybe? Not an expert, just curious that's all.

This car is the prime example of what happens when people either buy a car they can't afford or buy a brand of car they can't afford. I was always told with anything in life you have to buy...you buy it twice. Cars are no exception to this. Too many times do people buy decent cars...new or used and neglect the service on it. They only fix something if it prevents the car from going so...oil leaks, bad suspension parts and knocking all fall to the wayside as a non-issue until the car is sold and someone else gets stuck with a car that isn't worth fixing and likely doesn't get fixed.

The S-Type is perfect for the fellow who is Jaguar-curious, but they' would miss their Taurus.

Would it be possible to press in new bushings? I mean, even if they aren't exact fit (because they probably don't sell the right size ones) it would be better than letting it knock around.

No it's a jaguar and that's what's right with it

I had a 3 litre manual S Type from "almost" new to 75k and it was absolute rubbish. Got to 65 k and everything just started falling apart. Split engine coolant reservoir, failed coil packs, suspension bushings repeatedly failing, fuel system problems, on and on and on. I caled it my "clown car". I've been a Volvo and Mercedes man since.

Do the suspension. We'd all love to know how good it could be. If you take a couple of k hit put it down to keeping your loyal subscribers happy

There's wrong info by John and Dana in this video. The suspension bushings CAN in fact be replaced for less than $50 per corner. I have owned my 2003 Jaguar S-Type 3.0 Sport 5-speed manual for 14 years. I did this repair myself in the garage. Here's how. It's in my video discussing the Top 10 common problems with the Jaguar S-Type and how to fix them on the cheap: th-cam.com/video/RtjIsARb8zs/w-d-xo.html .

I found the press in bushings as well... can't imagine a worse job though. I'd guess most shops would charge you double if you brought bushings instead of full replacement parts 💯

@@WatchJRGo Removing the rear lower control arm and rear strut was surprisingly easy. Replacing the strut bushings took 10 minutes on my 20-ton HF press. The control arm bushings are a pain the neck, though. I used a Press & Pull Sleeve Kit and it was a struggle, but still doable by a weekend mechanic.

Differed maintenance, deferred maintenance? Has anyone heard of maintenance on a car.....kills me to know how many cars are on the road in even worse shape than this example. 🤔

Like I know he’s a shop but 500 for the lower control arm is crazy . Rock auto has them for like under 200 for moog
