    I've been called a poser multiple times, because I've JUST RECENTLY gotten into the "emoish" type music and have been like rlly obsessed with the aesthetic lately (like rlly recent, like 3 weeks), and it kind of made me feel really self conscious about my newly found interests, so I very much agree with you on this type stuff :)

    I love both emo and goth music along with allot of other styles of music including things like opera. I used to dress alternative but not so much now. I think it is this way for allot of people and it doesn't make them any less alternative. I feel being alternative is more than just dressing alternative.

      I agree! I think you can enjoy alternative subcultures without the style.

    i really like your perspective on this, and yes we are definitely multifaceted. thank you for this rant! i think it was needed it's been on my mind since i joined the alt scene and i always wondered what other alternatives thought abt "posers" and poser culture.
    although i both like and dislike labels i agree w alot of your views toward it. i still have my moments of contributing to poser culture unfortunately but this gave me a new outlook on it. i have multiple styles and non emo/scene interests, i don't listen to every emocore/crunkcore/hyperpop etc artist or band out there, nor do i have every personality trait or like every item of clothing in either but i still have a love for emo and scene culture and i still present and call myself scene and emo. i also think mixing or being in multiple subcultures is cool too. this also goes for being in a subculture but also presenting or liking modern/trendy things.
    heck i dont just see myself as scene and emo, i like 80's culture and clothing, early 2000s and some mall goth/avril lavigne type clothing but i dont label myself a mall goth bc im not but i like elements of the styles of both that and punk/skater chick stuff like an avril lavigne type thing.
    theres nothing wrong w wanting to fall into one subculture and one only either bc it is all down to self expression and what makes us happy + i think its cool to dress how we want as long as it isn't actively hurting anyone.

    I 100% agree with your assessment that posers don't actually exist. I believe that posers are the invention of those who think they are superior. I call myself emo, but I only dress the part about 5% of the time and listen to the music about 45% of the time. People are multi-faceted. Sometimes I go through spirts of listening to bluegrass and country, and dressing like a 2010 hipster. Other times, I like looking like the living embodiment of Evie O'Connell from The Mummy and listening to melodic death metal. Mostly, I dress like I work at Jimmy John's or wear pajamas. Everyone's unique.
    As a 30-year-old who was a once a 13-year-old non-emo emo kid. I can attest that it was very uncool to be emo. Most who were really in to emo back then would never admit that they were, including myself. In my area, being called scene was actually more acceptable. Like, "I'm not actually emo, I just like the fashion, music, and events that are inherently associated with emo. I'm scene." That being said, scene seemed spit off into it's own area and had it's own flavor. I observed back then that emo fashion had Japanese punk influences whereas scene was more of an alternate color pallet of what was popular. My local variety of emos were also proud "Naru-tards," so perhaps this perceived influence was just my friends' love of anime showing through. My personal old-school Pinterest board that was known as Photobucket featured a lot of Japanese punk and street fashion as well as scene-queen styles.
    My inner fashion history enthusiast wants to know when kandi was adopted from the kandi kids. It used to be all sweat bands and jelly bracelets. The kandi appeared in this subculture rather suddenly to me. I think it's adorable, and I love it, but I'm very curious.
    But I digress.
    I am so excited about the current emo revival! I have found so much good music in last few years!! I've also really gotten a kick out of Matt Cutshall's videos lately.
    Side note: Labels, cliques, and casts have always been very important to humans, historically speaking. It's a part of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (Love and Belonging.) Placing oneself (or even being placed) under an umbrella term in order to feel like one "fits in" is a completely natural, human instinct. I do think that social media has exacerbated the negative side of it, playing a large role in there being an entire generation of lonely people... BUT labels and elitist-label-enforcers have and always will exist.

      I think kandi became a part of the scene with the growing popularity of edm and its influences on the alternative scene (like 2009 electronicore) I haven’t really looked into it so I’m not sure but that’s what I remember.
      I also agree with humans and the need to belong which is why I feel like these communities were created. However, I think it’s switched from finding a community that fits your interest to making your interests match with a community. If that makes any sense lol

    • @exiefiah1966
      @exiefiah1966 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@the_bella_boo That does make sense, I totally get what you're saying. And I, again, agree. Unfortunately, that mentality has infiltrated many communities. I see it in a lot of the youtubers I follow and the younger people I work with. If they do something that's not within their one label, or "on-brand" then they spend a lot of time justifying the thing they did, rather than just saying the reality of, "I'm me and I like what I like."

      @@the_bella_boo Also, around 2009-2011ish, I got really into Ska and mostly went to metal shows, so that would make sense as to how I missed it.

    i agree with this video. i personally think that people make their favorite subculture(s) so entwined with their identity that they get offended when they see people “misrepresenting” it. i’m not sure if that makes sense. because these people find so much identity and pride within their subculture, they feel threatened by people who may be “posers.” they claim that those “posers” water down/dilute the subculture they love so much. but this does not go for everyone. anyways, i enjoyed watching the video :)

    Like I am an emo scene goth alt not crazy looking and people calls me a poser and just being part of the subculture doesn't mean the fashion it means being yourself

  • @yasmin-m-07

    i feel like we generally have the same view on this but to me, “poser culture” is actually slightly different,, rather than calling people that don’t go “full in” to a subculture a poser, i think posers are more of the people that will really disregard what the whole point of alt subcultures are and just take whatever they want from it (if that makes sense). this isn’t bad, like you said, it’s great that people get to experiment with new things, but i think when they just take our clothes and our “aesthetics” and don’t care to learn about the history behind it, how it came to be, that’s a poser. idk if this makes much sense and i agree with you, this is just my two cents

    • @the_bella_boo
      @the_bella_boo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think that most people who just take ‘aesthetics’ are using it to explore themselves rather than be involved with a community. Idk I don’t see it as a bad thing
