So I’ve noticed some people in my family who paint their bathrooms a higher sheen have the streaks running down their walls. I also noticed that someone painted the metal frames around my windows and the windows were streaking with moisture. Since I have moved away from higher sheens I have noticed less streaking. Higher sheens (to me) act as a insulator for moisture (almost like putting on a plastic bag to wear… it’s gonna make you sweat from the inside). Since I’ve used flatter sheens I’ve noticed less issues with moisture buildup. I do use a mold resistant primer

You can also purchase a small, table top dehumidifier and put it in the bathroom. That will help too. Thanks for sharing your wisdom!

You missed a step or two
First sand down the walls with G180 sandpaper. Remove any dust & debris
Then put a coat of Primer. (Specifically one for high moisture or mold resistant). After it drys put a coat of semi-gloss paint or anything with a higher sheen. Paint ONE wall at a time first do the corners & edges of a wall with a corber brush then use your roller to paint the rest of the wall.(you paint one wall at a time to insure that it wont leave any marks from your brush or roller from paint that has dried before youve finished that wall). After the first coat of paint has dried feel the wall if it feels a bit rough use 220Grit sandpaper & give it a light sand. Then apply the seconed coat. Usually 2 coats of paint & a coat of primer gets the job done right.
For smother walls use a fine roller nap like 3/8 or 1/2. For textured walls like orange peel use a thicker nap.
If heavy amount of mold is present best to remove it & replace with mold resistant drywall usual comes color coated purple or green.
I would never recomend eggshell in any restroom or any area with high moisture or heat. Thers a reason why semi-gloss is always recomend for restrooms & kitchens.
After a few months you'll see why the eggshell isnt recomended for places with high heat & moisture.
& for flocks sake dont use that cheap 2inone paint primer for something like this you'll regret it.

@@justinwoods240 True in most cases, but in this case, this guy has a fan and obviously he's either not utilizing his bathroom well to lower the humidity and/or his original pain was not optimal for preventing mold. In either case, he has mold in a place that will constantly be battered with high humidity. If you're going through all this work, why not just throw on some primer and pain that is specifically made for damp, high moisture places. Sure it's a little more expensive and work but at least you know you won't have to re-do, if you plan on living there for a long time....

Use mold and mildew resistant water based matt paint in bathrooms. Water based matt paints breathe so you won't get moisture buildup and run marks down the wall. If its a repaint and the existing paint has staining or old, clean and prep the surface and then use a good stain blocking like Zinsser 1-2-3, let the first prime coat dry overnight then top coat.

10 gal trash bags in a roll work amazingly well. i can leave a roller or brush tightly wrapped up for 2-3 weeks without getting any paint dried. pro trip better to have the brush / roller saturated rather than nearly empty of paint.

I have used straight up liquid bleach from Walmart etc. and used it to thin latex paint for outer walls that are not property insulated so condensation is a problem as well as the mold that follows. I see now that Menards has products that actually kill mold. I've used them on bathroom tile and they seem to work.

I wish my bathroom was that color. A previous owner put fake tile made of plastic on part of the walls, then painted over the remaining wall area, leaving a most awful scab-red and dirty mustard color scheme. Additionally, they faked granite on the counter areas by using paint in a combination of moldy gray and brownish green. They continued these colors all through the house, painting over what had been a perfectly nice blue. We’re going to find out this spring and summer just how much of a mold issue there’ll be as the bathroom fan is inadequate.

Hi. I have a small bathroom that is covered with mold from the ceiling down the walls. I was told by mold inspector that all the sheetrock must come out and put up new. What is a reasonable amount for this project living in Texas. My bathroom size is 123" long, 60" wide and 95" high from floor to ceiling. I was quoted 58k with me doing the painting and buying vanity, mirror and keeping existing toilette. Is that reasonable?

Is there a water-based paint, for bathroom wooden surfaces which can withstand moisture exposure 💦 most recommended bathroom paints are designed for ceilings & walls 🤨

First prime it with Zinsser 1-2-3. make sure you let the primer dry 24 hours before top coat. Any of the premium water based paints with mold/mildew treatment included will work such as Dulux Bathroom.

  • @Idlepit2
    @Idlepit2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Never use bleach to remove mold it doesn't kill the mold and adds moisture to the walls which feeds the mold so it will quickly come back and probably worse that it was originally.
Always use a mold killer then lightly sand, seal and prime the spot after this should prevent moisture making it to any remaining spores preventing them from taking hold again and then use moisture resistant paints that have anti mold agents in them to repaint the bathroom.
This along with a few measures like opening windows when bathing or showing, cleaning and using extractor fans and removing damp fabrics like clothes, towels straight away should keep your rooms mold free

Also not sure why they didn't paint the ceiling since they're doing all this anyways....

I just went to Benjamin Moore and got the aura can of paint which you can actually buy i flat Finish and somehow it is really good for bathrooms! I Paid a bit more for it but it’s so worth it not to have shiny walls! Plus matte is awesome at covering in perfections.

I would have primed it with bath/spa sealant. Then painted with a satin sheen. The ceiling would probably have to of been painted as well. Then investigate why the fan didnt prevent the issue. My guess is the fan noise is an inconvenience so they never use it. I would tie the fan to the lights so it comes on when lights come on. This contractor has no clue...

That ceiling clearly needed work, but they only took care of the walls. Weird. Mauro is usually very detailed and thorough, but he missed on this. At least explain why the ceiling is not being touched. I see that other posters think bleach is a very bad idea. Their logic is very understandable, which makes this video odd. Re the anti-mold remover chemical, which you need to "remediate" the mold itself, I was told the opposite by paint center guys at Home Depot: spray it on the wall and let it work, but use restraint obviously. The directions state that it is fine for use on regular painted walls. I suspect the answer is in term, "mold in the bathroom". It can mean many different degrees of contamination, perhaps? Mild, superficial mold is OK for bleach, while more extensive contamination is not suitable for it?

Choosing a color isn't complicated. There are really only 6 choices. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. But what about brown? Brown is just dark orange just like pink is light red. Add in one more choice with your grayscale (White to Black). Once you've picked a color you can turn to how dark or light it is, and how saturated, or intense, it is.

If you have mold in your bathroom, fix the problem, dont paint over it. Bad move! Unfortunately this Old House has gone from professional to Amatures.

He did cover the mold problem. He said to make sure to use the exhaust fans.

I think it's funny a pro painter needs to tape of to paint. I fire him if he was on my job site learn to use a brush

arm chair painters at it again. as soon as i saw the tape come out i knew someone would say that. professional painters use tape on non-spraying task. Fact. That type of edge is boarder line in my opinion but the home owner was helping and certainly doesnt have the skills to cut that line. i do find it funny he used a liner on the wooster bucket. i use a brush to get the excess out and next day it all peels off nearly in one piece. (except flat enamels).

Everyone is a painter . Just ask them. I would sure as shit want that taped if i knew the homeowner was going to paint with me. Though i would have use frog tape. Also would not let the dude brush just roll. Hard to fuck up rolling. Or not I've seen people
