Rebirth Of A Classic - The $20 Larger Casio F91W - W217H Watch Review

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 24 ธ.ค. 2024
- Today we revisit one of my favourite watches to review, and compare it with a newer version for the larger wrist. The Casio F91W is a watch unlike any other and perhaps the most affordable iconic watch of all time.
Loved for its instantly recognisable design, the F91W has become a movie star, a fashion accessory, and has even been used in conflict as a weapon. But ultimately, it brings amazing value, fun, functionality, and dependability, and all for the price of lunch. However, one of the major criticisms was its dated size, so in 2017 Casio debuted the W217H to bring this legendary timepiece to a new, more modern market.
But some big questions remain: Will the larger version be a better choice at almost double the price? Or is the 1991 classic original still king? Join me today as we compare and find out!

Omg that intro was straight FIRE
might as well be casios offical marketing
Ikr, this channel has the best intros ever
The outro was pretty awesome too!
Seriously. A unicorn among a field of dogsh*t intros.
My F91w has lasted for 12 years with the same battery. Admittedly it was left in my garage for 11 of those years until I found it...but it only lost 5 minutes in that period!!!
That's just amazing to imagine that something would 'document' (by counting along) reality like that, and come out only five minutes off after counting almost 6,000,000 minutes, and that it was done without a person observing it.
It's a perfect watch.
MJFallout that’s amazing
Good, that's what we should expect from Casio
5 minutes... You must of got a duff one 😂
I think it’s awesome that Casio still puts out all the old models. They’re touching that smartphone edge but they won’t. Casio is the smartest watch company in the world. They also make the best watches. That’s why everybody likes them. Casio did something differently. They made quality stuff.
Best comment about Casio ever
@@rickyporter6450 Best comment about a Casio-related comment ever
Your respect and enthusiasm for horology regardless of brand or price is what makes this channel great.
If one doesn't like a Casio, then their heart isn't beating.
You never cease to amaze one with these frequently unique and refreshing intros! Love the work!
Who is the individual giving the lecture/voiceover in the intro?
It's Alan Watts; evidently I should look through the other comments FIRST next time...
Ah, Alan Watts is fantastic, as is Alan Watt...both well worth checking out on youtube. Now, anyone know the synthy music?
U are in love with him LOL
That moment when you remember you have 8 Casios but not the F91W. Or room left in your Casio watch box to fit one in. I'm gonna need a bigger box (or start mixing up my watches)...
Anyway, always loved how TGV treats a £5 watch with the same love and respect as a £5000 watch. Fantastic stuff guv'nor.
LOL!!! How dare you not have an F91W!!! :D But as you have 8 Casios already, you are forgiven! ;-)
Thank you my friend, I appreciate that very much.
Best regards,
TGV
Your best intro to date! Simply amazing editing, aesthetic, music, voice over, ... The whole shebang!
The fact that TGV still makes videos that appeal to the lower end of the market despite being associated with a larger institution speaks loads about his character. Also, great intro. I'm enjoying this channel even more since I discovered it 3 years ago.
I recently purchased a W217H and I like it better than F91W. The band is a little long so I bought another FW 91 (11.00) and traded straps. Perfection! I know some of you will think that’s a bit opulent, but when you’re a man of my means ...
nice to see a nice variety of price ranges despite the partnership with Watch box, Nice work TGV
Always a man of the people!
That intro was awesome TGV. Got my 91 after watching the governor. Keep it up.
I just bought a f91-w love it. It's brutalistic design is beautiful. Simplicity of design and function are off the charts. Reminds me of many California buildings from the mid century. The Oakland Museum of California comes to mind. Brutalism is big in California Architecture, if you look you'll see it. The ideas it gives me that the future is optimistic. We don't have time for anything that is not necessary. I think it is a masterpiece.
The old authentic urban gentry is still alive he is one of our own and he will never change his ethos we love you
Ah the F91W brings back fond memories of stopwatch duels in elementary school....only the quickest fingers could stop it on 00:00:01!
you can get 00:00:01 by doing a time split instead of double pressing atart stop button
I can only manage .12 fuck im slow
The trick is getting the switch to bounce i guess :D
That was probably one of your best intros! I love the 80s vibe.
Alan Watts for the intro. I can't believe how well his voice and philosophy stylistically matches the retro music and imagery. I wouldn't have expected that. Well done sir. Well done.
When I was 6 or so my father gave me a little F105W, which is very similar to the F91W. That thing was glued to my wrist and I would play with other kids, fall to the ground, ride bicycles, play soccer, go to the beach, get caught in the rain or shower with it, sleep, and even press the light button... while being underwater. I don't even know how but it lasted roughly 6 years all beaten up and scratched all over but it did stop due to the battery running out. My dad decided that it was too damaged to replace the battery so he gave an another Casio which, by the way lasted for another 10 years. Recently I managed to find a copy of this F105w, and hopefully it will last for a long time! I'm in love with a Seiko automatic field watch but Casio will always have a place in my heart haha Thanks TGV and keep it up the good work! I love your channel.
Every time I think I have enough Casio watches, The Urban Gentry strikes again and I get slightly more broke! Nice vid TGV 👍
You just did the same thing to me with my Casio A158W, and you didn't even give that the white glove treatment... you monster lol.
Well, at least the erosion is in itty bitty increments, given how low Casio prices are :D
Think I'll pass on this one
The original, even with the older technology for lighting, is the clear winner! It is practical, subtle and near perfection for what a digital watch should be. Excellent video!
Have just ordered f-91w and haki nato strap. I have to admit this is one of the most stylish and authentic channel on TH-cam. Cheers
Opening up this video and getting to watch that intro whilst wearing an F-91W made me feel so freakin' awesome. I'm glad I found this channel
I have a load of Casios in my collection. Oceanus, Edifice, G-Shock, Duro and I love them all. The Oceanus was my first JDM purchase as a new collector. All titanium, tough solar movement, atomic clock and a beautiful looking piece as well. Also takes me back to my childhood. The calculators, then the watches. My collection would feel incomplete without them.
I recently picked up the w217h and I love it. Very simplistic yet reliable. It’s been my daily work watch for a few weeks now
Literally the day after I receive my F91W you post this video. Needless to say that's quite a nice surprise. I love watching about Casios, great video as usual
You have inspired me to order a Casio F91W and a camo NATO strap. That look is on point!!!
This is why I watch your show. You review the $10 watches, as well as the expensive pieces.
I may be weird but watches bring me peace and calmness. Your reviews make them as soothing as an ASMR video. Just gentry. Thank you.
Just bought my first f91. Got it on clearance for $5 at Target unexpectedly. It's the gold one. Love it.
Awesome intro. Don't ever stop with them. You consistently had the best intros on TH-cam, despite doing it all yourself -- just make them that much better now that you have professional help. This one certainly hold up to that!
A f91 was my first watch too as a kid. I never took it off for years and had a tan line from it. Eventually it broke due to standard little boy activities, and was replaced with a gshock, which I (obvious) never managed to break. I think my old gshock is in a box in my mom's garage somewhere.
This new one is pretty cool.
Glad to hear Alan Watts, two inspiring people in one video!
I have this W217H and I love it! Thanks TGV!
Nothing like a Casio for the money. Also, best intro ever Governor.
Watches I purchased in the last -19 months off this channel's recommendations alone: Hamilton Khaki King, Rolex Date just, Casio F91W, Seiko SKX013, Casio AE1200, and a citizen eco-drive I can't recall the model name.
I'm not into watches, but your enthusiasm reviewing a cheap watch inclined me to watch the whole video.
I love that you're not a watch snob and respect watches at all prices
Damn, that intro! Always getting better. I swear that video you uploaded yesterday for servicing a watch was made for me.
Thank you TGV!!
Spencer
Best channel on TH-cam. I always look forward to your videos.
I can’t express just how happy the synthwave intros make me! Great work
80s
Haha, I am equally glad. It makes me happy too!
Thank you my friend,
Best regards,

The best watch youtuber and narrator david Attenborough vibes
One always wonders what might happen if such a venerable watch as the F91W should be updated and lo! Here we are! It looks wonderful!
I have the gold & blue W217H. They're what I call my "inhouse" watches.... used for the morning alarm clock, gardening, beach, walking the dog, household chores etc etc. Very comfortable watches!!
Dude, your videos are straight up OVER THE TOP! Wow!
you should let me go to bed early from time to time TGV!
Gave my 8 year old the F91W for his birthday last week. He loves it.
The last Casio I had around ten years ago or so was a W201, a marvelous, sleek, thin tonneau body, which I stupidly tossed after the strap broke, and the case and display "crystal" were all banged and scratched. I will keep the one in my shopping basket now though, as I now know where to get replacement and alternative straps, and I have Polywatch, which works well! Super-slim, rounded with flush buttons, never got snagged, and the display seemed larger than on other watches, which I now confirmed as being the same size as an F108 or W217/218.
For using the flush buttons, just grow a nail out by 1mm, which I do anyway for tinkering with micro-parts, so I sneer at the complaints there. This flush button design makes the little watch with its big display very comfortable to wear, with nothing ever biting you at all!
I tried a few different Casios in the last couple of years, and nothing got close to my digital watch memories of the 70s and 80s, or that W201.
The caveats are of course my reduced eyesight (very annoying, as I used to be able to read license plates at over 100 meters!), making so many of the small displays useless, and the knowledge that water resistance is something I want, even when I no longer go swimming, simply as a safety measure for that once in a decade jacuzzi party!
The W201 is one of a very few digital watches now on my RADAR, and I kept getting back to it as my first choice.
I own an w-217h with the amber outline instead of blue and I've got to say it's the only watch i basically wear now because i like it so much. Thanks for the review TGV!
So glad to hear that and I totally get it.
That's the thing about Casio, they make you question owning anything else!
Great comment, thank you Ron, may it keep serving you well.
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentryssshhhhhhhhh! My wife will hear! 😬
Man, you can really see when someone is passionate doing TH-cam.
TGV is one of them, really enjoyable video, but the best part was the intro :)
I was actually SHOCKED at how cool the light feature is on this watch! 😎
Excellent video. I love how much you pay respect to such a ‘cheap’ watch. As cheap as it is, this watch is arguably more important than many premium watches will ever be. A reliable, sturdy classic that tells the time accurately. Anyone can wear one as well. It doesn’t matter if you are a millionaire or a kid. It’s classless! Like an old Land Rover 🤣👍🙏
Thank you Josh, lovely to hear from you.
As for you comment, I could not agree more and deeply appreciated.
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry thank you for taking the time to respond my good man! Sincerely wishing you all the best with the new venture. Have much enjoyed watching you take the channel and indeed yourself to new heights!
Wow! Amazing, wonderful intro!!! Excellent video review. Honestly Tristano, you are truly my favorite to watch. I do so enjoy your offerings. I often watch/listen to your excellent reviews when I'm doing work or general stuff at home. Thank you so much for all you do for us, the good Gentry!🙂👍
I’ve been wondering for a while what TGV’s take on this piece was. Fantastic video as always! Thank you for all you do for us!
Sir, A+ intro! Best channel on TH-cam
TGV.. the Intro is the best you have done. Perfect work. Congrats.
Just ordered a W217H, as I had an F91W a few months ago, but returned it after a couple of days on wrist, as it was just too small.
The W217H I ordered is the one with blue that looks very reminiscent to the F91W.
your intros are getting better and better!
I have a casio w800, which I love. Smaller than a gshock, 100mm water resistant and 10 year battery life.
I have 2 w800's, one that I modded w/countdown timer. I tried to like the 217 but the button operation is too much different than the w800, which has my vote at the best watch under $20.
I could watch these videos all day...and often do. fantastic as always onwards and upwards.
Casio W218H is similar but bears comparison with the G Shock 5600 in style. It is easier to read than the G Shock though. There is is less clutter and writing on the face and it is a fraction of the price. Accuracy is good. Battery last 7 years. Unless you really want G Shock toughness the W218H makes a great buy and it is under £20!
I just received my f91-w today that I ordered a couple days ago and I love it, and TGV posts a video about casio. What a coincidence!
I keep coming back to watch the intro. Great stuff!
Urban gentry at his best, enjoyable moment of the day.
Another great video, TGV. Nice watch too.. I just got the black one with golden details. My humble Casio collection is growing.
Cheers from Brazil!
First to the party again. Always quality videos TGV 👏👏👏
You never cease to amaze TGV
When I see these casios I just think back to the 70's as a kid getting my first digital watch for Xmas and being so excited that I could use the light to see the time at night under the bed covers.lol.need another one again me thinks.
Good work fella.
I was thinking exactly same how time flys from being a kid I now look in mirror and Lynn looks like my grandad is starring back at me 😃
Do it my friend, there is nothing like getting that experience back even if it is just for a split second.
Thank you Rick, I know exactly how you feel, gotta love Casio!
Best regards,
TGV
My mistake.typo,It was early 80s.
Btw.Duncan Jones directed Moon.
YESSSSS!!! Thank you my friend!
Best regards,
TGV
Your intros are second to none. Well done.
Phenomenal intro, Stella work with eurythmics mixed in!! Suits the icon very well. Great work TGV 👍
I appreciate the blank space opposite the illuminator button as I can place my thumb in this area and "pinch" my fingers to apply more consistent pressure to the light button.
This way you get nice even green light on the original model.
I received an F91W as a gift. I put it on and it was barely able to fit (8"+ wrist.)A bit on the small side. I said to myself, let's just try it out. By the end of the day I loved it. I can't explain it but this free $10 watch is a winner.
Amazing video TGV! As always. I love you reviews and definitely I bought the W217 just after I saw your video because the F91W was one of my childhood watches I loved the most. Recently I bought one again because it really brings me a lot of memories but sadly it was extremely little for my big wrists and it looked like I stole my little brother watch and I hang out with it, honestly that really disappointed me until I saw this video and thanks to you I discovered the W217, an amazing Watch with all the essence of the F91W for people like me with bigger wrists. Seriously thank you, you really do an amazing job every video you upload, definitely you’re my first source to consult every time I’m gonna buy a new watch. Seriously, you do a great job TGV.
Yuhooo ....
Return of TGV's outstanding Intros!!
Return of soothing & relaxing Oprah in the back!!
Return of in studio reviews!!
And ofcourse - Rebirth of a Classic!!
Life is beautiful :)
Another excellent video, TGV. It's another "I remember" moment. My very first digital watch was the Casio C-80, purchased soon after it came out. I was an "early adopter" and I truly thought that I stepped into the future. I had no real use for the calculator, but I really felt COOL!
Thank you Milton, I know EXACTLY how you feel, those moments with watches are priceless.
So glad to hear you have that too. The C-80 is now a collectors piece, and rightly so!
Best regards,
TGV
I love my Casio f-91w in silver and black strap. It fits my skinny wrists very well. I dig the small form honestly
I got turned off of digital watches in my youth when I received a pulsar for Christmas in 1982. I was so excited, I couldn’t stop looking at it. Then I went outside to play, it was only about -30c , but the display froze. It was under my winter clothing at the time .
Bro you probably have the coolest intro ever I always skip intros but I didn’t for yours
Just yesterday I was watching your old video about beater watch. I was thinking to get a DW5600E but now I have one more option to consider. This W217H Casio does look quite good. Thanks TGV for great video once again.
THIS IS TGV BEST INTRO 👏 Casio f91w beater 🥊 casio mrw200 diver 🤿 and casio mtpv001 dress ⌚ the cheap small wrist 3 watch collection i suggest 👍
I currently have my second F91W which has served me well over the last six months after my previous F91W died out after what felt like a lifetime, god knows how many years. This piece is an absolute workhorse and is exception to the saying "Buy cheap, buy twice" I still wear it on a regular basis.
I have great affection for this watch as with my first F91W, the resin strap would fit my wrist comfortably on the second rung, yet since purchasing a new F91W, now only on the first. Still one of my favorite watches of all time.
Genius intro! I jst realised that you slightly modified Alan Watts speech from the intro by putting " And that is time" in the end instead uploading it unedited. Great decision! Great minds really do align! Love it all
Hope all is well TGV, and congratulations on the new partnership with Watch Box. These kinds of watches tug at my heart strings. Steal of a price for long lasting, accurate time keeping and a taste of an iconic era for all to enjoy. I just happen to be wearing my F-91W today. Warm Regards.
I have so much Casio watches passed by my grandfather and bought new ones too! I have an addiction to collecting Casio watches.🖤
Great little watch, I just got a 35th anniversary DW-5735d - 1b with the screw caseback, it has the basic 3421 module and the metalized lcd. Good to have you back and congrats on your new endeavor! Steve M.
Wow that's really cool !
Is it US exclusive ?
@@andreatilli6227 I don't think so 🙂
I always enjoy your videos! Your the best! ⌚️
So glad they did this. Love the f91w. Was my first ever watch. I did buy and have got another. But it's way to small on me. I'm off to Amazon now. Shame about the strap limitations. But can live with that. It will be my fun work watch.
Great review as always! Bought one yesterday as a gift for my dad so perfect timing with this vid haha. Really does feel like a grown up version of the f-91w keeping the same retro charm.
Had to look up "Proustian Madeleine". Again I become ever more cultured and classy each time I watch one of your videos. I have a very similar experience with Casio in that they evoke powerful memories of childhood for me. Also starting to prefer the gentrified pronunciation of "ammazn" instead of my usual American "ammaZAWN". The opening was tremendous. Always look forward to new videos from you TGV. It's like Christmas every week.
For a long time I went to bed early.
Great video TGV with a fantastic intro. I still chuckle every time I think of the video with Hugo dancing to speed garage (or whatever type of music is was). It’s great to see pure class for $20 USD!
Everything I need and nothing I don’t.
👏👏👏
Fantastic opening. Very cool watch. Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work.
Just got my F-91W yesterday! It's prefect to wear inside the house because of it's size.
I can relate to that. I am constantly clattering my other watches against door frames etc.
another amazing video!
and your intros are never gets old!
I had a F91W as a kid (who didn't?), but I don't like wearing it now, because it feels way too small on my 40 year old wrist. A few weeks ago, I got one of these new ones, with the golden case, black rubber strap and the golden lettering, that in my opinion fits the amber light better than the silver or black ones with blue details. The increased size, screen and light, makes it a better proposition. The only downsize was the button position change. Took me a couple of days to get used to it. And it's still the only watch I don't need to take out of my wrist when sleeping, because it's so light it doesn't bother me at all.
I get so excited getting an Urban Gentry upload, even moreso about my little F91W.
I just took my promaster off and put on the Casio watching this.
promaster squad waddup!!
Thanks so much for not forgetting to review the most affordable watches around. An iconic and awesome watch isn't defined by the price tag.
Never a dull video on this channel
He’s back!!!!
Mate the entrance is DOPE !!!!! Another great video !!
Last week I got myself a Casio MRW-200H-1BVEF, for cycling. Brilliant little watch. Didn't need a Gshock and I can't bring myself to wear a digital watch. So little 3 hand 'diver' is ace
Awesome watch. Almost as indestructible as a Gshock and imho better looking. You will find it sewn into the flight suit for a plane used by NASA extremely high altitude experimentation.
I just bought a vintage bullhead from the 60's and I can't wait to get it!
