  • Step by step how to add external antennas to the T-Mobile 5G Home Internet Nokia Gateway. This uses the U.FL ports on the gateway and allows you to hook up a 4G/5G Panel antenna, Yagi antenna or similar using SMA or N-type connectors.

    T-Mobile is just now rolling out 5G service and their software on these gateways (and their home internet phone app) are a bit buggy but I have faith they will continue to improve it. Right now it is a great option for those with no other reliable FAST internet. I have had AT&T DSL that gets about 25mbs down and 6mbs second up and I'll say its been rock steady the past several years.
    If you have cable, fiber or 50+ mbs DSL you are probably better off sticking with that for a while until T-Mobile and others get the 5G fixed wireless fully setup and kinks worked out. This is much cheaper and potentially faster than Starlink especially for upload but Starlink covers (will cover...) all the REALLY rural places.

    A guy named 007Bond on the TMO discussion board (T mobile home internet subsection) just installed a Waveform antenna and went from 75 down to 650 down. He's in a different situation from us though. He's between three towers fairly close by, including one that is only .5 miles away, and his problem was not connecting to the fast band pair with n41 reliably.

I can see it trying to charge the battery on the top display. I also read the alert about low battery life. It is not a firmware update. I'm following all of your videos and now I want to add an external antenna. All the links to antennas including the panel antenna you have listed have a frequency range of 698 - 2700 MHz. But the N71 5G frequency range is 617 MHz - 652 MHz. So what good are these antenna's and can you recommend a panel antenna that has the appropriate frequency range for N71?

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Antennas natural have a curve of freq response so ones listed as 700-2700mhz doesnt mean they dont recieve 699 or 2701 mhz nor does it mean they pick up 700 or 2700 that well. It all depends on the antenna. Waveform sells one that is marketed at 600+ mhz.

    Man Nate, you have the patience of a saint taking that router apart! I did have a question concerning bands used. I originally had just B12 as a primary and no secondary channel . One morning I turned off the router and turned it back on and noticed I now had B66 as primary and N41 as a secondary channel. Yesterday I had to do some electric work, shut the power and when the router came back up it was back to B12 and no secondary channel. I contacted t-Mobile who said they don't set the channels and couldn't put me with 5G channel and advised to try and reboot to see of it goes back to a primary and secondary 5G channel . No luck though. I use Ooma as a voip serviçe and had issues with dropped calls. They state my jitter is to high (12 )and needs to be around 5. The 5g channel seemed to have less jitter and worked good with Ooma. My wife has a defibrillator implant and a device that reads the unit and transmits info through voip to the doctor. Is it true T Mobile can't designate channels? It really gets frustrating. Thanks so much for your t-mobil TH-cam series. They're filled with excellent advice.

      Correct there is no way to manually select bands. You can try different locations in the house, it goes for the strongest signal. Another trick can be to literally wrap the gateway in tin foil for a few mins and see if it changes bands.

    So I bit the bullet and bought the waveform 4X4 Mimo antenna package. Seems Starlink is going to keep delaying availability in our area of Virginia. My biggest concern was i have a shaking issue with my hands. I am 63 years old. But it did not affect the install of the very small u.fl connectors. I did exactly as Nater notes in his video. I worked from 4,3,2 then 1. I was really impressed how easy it was once I took apart the Nokia cylinder. I did run into a issue with putting back together. I was not able to get a click on the last leg of the bottom base resulting in my sim card not being read. My guess is it was because how I routed the wires in the bottom grill area. They kind of got bunched up around that area. But I was able to push down on the plastic base and screw it into the position it needed to read the sim. The results are amazing. I went from 25 DL and 5-10 UL to 112 DL and 55UL. So massive improvement. I am 2 miles and lots of hills and trees away from our tower. And I only had a 8 foot pole so I am sure I can improve if I wanted to put the antenna on the roof. Thanks Nater Tater for your videos and great advise on rural internet.

    You're my go-to expert on this stuff Nate. I just got my trashcan two days ago and now it appears outdated though I just watched your video of the new gateway and looks like I'm good with the Trashcan for a while. We are in rural Texas on 5-acreswith very few options. Our speeds tend to be all over the place at any given time. and I'm wondering if we would benefit from an external antenna, though based upon your reviews of them, it appears to not be the case. Our topography is rolling hills and no line of site to a tower, though we could from the rooftop of our home. Do you think it's worth a test? Should I consider an external router for a mesh network? Would appreciate your input if you're willing to share. Also, we also have spotty wi-fi calling at times though our speeds can be sufficient. I have a android phone and the others are 4G iPhones. Have you considered publishing a video specifically testing wi-fi calling? Thanks, and I look forward to hearing back from you!

I even asked once if email or web based support was available and was told that "only phone support is available at this time" (not sure if that was a hint of things to come, but AFAIK nothing has changed). Their support is quite infuriating. As if lack of an electronic support channel wasn't bad enough, I only get a competent rep about 25% of the time. And that's after waiting for hours for the callback and then being put in a queue when they do call back. And this abysmal support will only get worse as towers get more congested. Cox got under my skin for different issues, but their support blows the doors off T-Mobile.
      I do have T-Mobile connectivity again, but something has changed. Right now I can only connect to n71. I'd much rather have the blazing download speed of n41 though.

    Hi, again, Nate- I decided to continue with the trashcan instead of the Acadian, because the trashcan allows you to select your desired wifi channel, and when it reboots, it always comes back up on the same selected wifi channel. Acadian may select a new channel for you upon reboot. Have you tried connecting a N41 band (only) antenna to any of the trashcan ports? My trashcan always locks on the N41 as the Secondary Signal internet connection, with the Primary always being B2 or B66. B66 is good, but B2 has a lousy ping. The primary RSRP is around -100 and SNR from 3 to 8, but the secondary is much worse at about -112 and 6, respectively. The trashcan's internal antennas are all marked "5G", which doesn't tell you whether it is for the 700-900 mHz range or the 2.5 ghz N41 band. I want to put a 2.5 ghz only antenna on port 3 or 4 to improve the N41 signal, leaving the other port, 4 or 3, connected to the trashcan's internal antenna. Have you tried somethibg like this? This should work, as these ports are paired (I think) to allow for "diversity reception", via a 90-degree hybrid combiner for each pair 1-2 and 3-4. I cannot run 4 coax cables for a 4X4 MIMO antenna over the required distance using "fat" low loss coax, so a single cable is a must. Thanks for all you do on these.

      It may very well be that more folks are now using the service which ultimately limits the bandwidth available to everyone. It slowed down a bit for us too BUT it still gets the job done for well over a hundred a month less than Cox was charging us. We kept going well over the 1 TB limit and had to pay multiple overage fees monthly. We used 8TB last month and the bill was still only 50 bucks. Tmobile kicks butt. They changed the cellular industry for the better and at this rate they'll be making the cable and telecom companies think twice. What I did on my phone periodically in high congestion areas was switch my signal from 5g to 4g as most folks are now pulling from the 5g. It'll give you potentially more bandwidth to play with. :)

Talked to their tech support and they tell me the tower coverage is mediocre here, but is on the list to be upgraded. My question is, do you think an external antenna will actually help someone in my position? Or am I wasting a bunch of time and $$ for an external antenna that really won't produce significant increases in signal strength? And even if I get a better signal strength, that doesn't necessarily mean I'll get increased speed does it? Thanx. Dennis

      It might work it might not, I have no personal experience with this device but, technically better signal quality will allow better QAM for faster speed, and potentially better Carrier aggregation for faster speed

      If it makes tou feel better i only get 2, sometimes 3 out of 5 bars but can surpass 100mbs download (does vary a lot though). The tower upgrades they promis are a real thing, its not an empty promise. External antennae could potentially help. I'll touch on what to check and watch for to determine IF it is likely to help or not.

    Great Videos! I've been trying to work with my T Mobile Home internet to get just a little better quality so my ping is better during online racing. I ordered the MIMO Panel External Antenna Kit for 4G LTE/5G Hotspots & Routers and got it all hooked up and tested in many places. it moved the signal bar from 2 bars to 3 bars and did seem to help the SNIR a little, but when I was running the speed test the download and upload speeds were awful. It actually went down to download of 1.9 and upload of 6.5 when I can normally get 48 down and 21 up. I double checked the setup several times and it appears to be correct. I did notice that the size of the 30 ft Ultra-Low Loss RS400 N-Male to N-Male Coaxial Cables I received with the package is much larger than what you are using in this video. Do you feel that the large Low-Loss cable at 30ft and the large connection before going into the N-Female Pigtail Adapter could be an issue? This external antenna just didn't give my the increase quality I was hoping for when I hooked it up. I appreciate your great detail in your videos and all the great feedback in these comments.

      Hey Colton, sounds like you got one 2x2 MIMO so two cables right? If so most have the best success with ports L3 and L4 (bottom two) on the gateway. Some others have tried L1 and L2 or even mixed them up like L1 and L3 or L2 and L4, etc. Either way you need to have all 4 ports connected to something (either the stock internal ones or your external panel). RS400 cable is good and 30ft isn't a problem so those shouldn't be your issue. You should check which towers and bands you normally connect to and make sure your antenna is capable of those frequencies (do a web search on your band freq). Did you check out my antenna test video?

      @ColtonLance 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NaterTater Thank you for the response. I did look at that video (several times. Ha!) and probably should have posted the question under that one. I'm using L3 and L4 and left the other ones all on the stock antennas. I didn't touch them at all. My band freq is usually B2 or B66.It has been on B2 lately, but I seem to get better quality out of B66, but as you have noted I don't think I can lock it into one band. I was just really surprised how bad the speed test was with the external antenna hook up even thought the cell tower numbers were at least as equal to the numbers I showed when using just the T mobile modem.

    Most people think the battery is useless but it’s not there to keep your internet up during a power outage, it’s there to keep the device powered long enough to complete a firmware upgrade if your power goes out in the middle of it. If it goes out mid firmware upgrade, you risk bricking your device. I highly suggest anyone who follows this, keeps the battery in the device!

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I doubt that's the reason for the battery. It does a reboot when power is lost so I assume it may still brick itself if it was mid firmware update (which doesnt happen often). I still think the battery is useless.

      Directional is what you want typically. Often you will connect to just one tower so directional pointing at that tower is better than an omni.

    Thanks for great video Nate. Very well done!
    I have a couple tips to add if it helps anybody (I used a Waveform Panel kit as it is heavily treed where I live).
    1) When removing the bottom plate, use thin guitar picks (or other thin plastic shims) to push down on either side of the "pillars". Wedge between grey plastic cylindrical cover and black bottom plate. I found 0.88mm or thinner picks to work best. 1mm was a bit too thick. This releases the plate safely without causing any damage to the grey plastic cover (which could happen with flat blade screwdriver used in "pry bar" fashion). I used 4 picks (2 each at 2 pillars). At that point the plate pops off easily. Again, the clip release points are adjacent to the pillars, not directly in line with the pillars.
    2) In my case, the Waveform adapter coax was actually a bit larger dia. compared to stock. Since these wires are difficult to bend sharply, I found it easier to utilize L1/L2 since L3/L4 would require a sharp turn coming up from ventilation grilles. Note the pcb soldered wire retainer clips barely can hold these larger dia. adapter wires. Strain relieve well the wires elsewhere or risk the U.FL terminals popping off. Waveform uses nice quality cables, but this is the downside.
    *Results*:
    I was averaging 40-60mbps down/0.7mbps up before the modification. RSRP was -114 to -111.
    Now I'm at 75 to 100mbps down/0.7mbps up. RSRP now -112 to -109.
    Tried sides of house and roof. Spent a good 3-4 hours optimizing placement/height/direction/distance from house wall. Placement/location didn't matter hardly at all in my case, but direction did.
    I think I might purchase another antenna from them and replace L3/L4 with external. Will report here if I do that. I doubt it will help much, but I need better upload.

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the detailed post. Thats odd your upload is so low. If you're on n41 then you'll also be on a 4G LTE signal, thats what you would need to improve to get faster upload. 5G NSA still uses only the 4G for upload. I think the 4G has to be on the same tower but i could be wrong and if I am then you might need to point the antenna elsewhere to improve the 4G signal. Good luck!

      @@NaterTater Yup thanks for info! For sure direction matters for my implementation. I'm toying with the idea of purchasing the log periodic to increase gain and focus what limited TX power I have at the tower. Although technically I don't have clear LOS, it might be worth trying. I will call support on Monday and get Waveform's input as well.

    • @cobra-he9xj
      @cobra-he9xj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NaterTater Just an update here. I purchased a log periodic antenna from Waveform to compare against the panel. In my case, the results are nearly identical. Spent many hours optimizing and also did a 30 minute tech support call with Waveform. Tower is 3.5 miles as the crow flies. A third of that distance is lake, a third farmland and a third is treed. Flat elevation in between.
      For anybody that tries this, remember to try many combinations of can rotations paired with external antenna directions. The combination matters.
      Also if you have poor upload and it matters to you (say a content creator) try a lower frequency band (which may be a different tower...and may also have associated lower download speed). Don't always assume highest RSRP/download will equate to best upload. Check both! In my case, orienting toward farther tower with band 25 halved my download speed, but more than doubled my upload. That's the tradeoff I'm running with since my uploads were as low as 100-200kbps on some days. I am attributing better upload on lower bandwidth tower to the lower frequency (which has higher tree penetration) all else being equal. I sent the panel back, but really they work the same for my conditions.

    • @NaterTater
      @NaterTater  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cobra-he9xj thanks for the follow-up. As you probably know the upload is only your 4G LTE (primary) whereas the 5G NSA contributes to download. Even on the same tower I have a different orientation to optimize 4G vs 5G.
