- Hi Folks, this weeks video is the highly requested sewing space tour. I hope this is useful for those of you who are interested in setting up a small sewing space that has everything you need but takes up very little borrowed space from another room. This is a lovely sewing space. I have an entire room for my crafting now since the children are grown but when they were young I had a similar area to yours, tucked into the corner of our bedroom with the addition of utilizing under bed storage boxes for fabrics. I started sewing at age 5 when my grammy taught me to sew on buttons which was challenging for both of us as I was legally blind and hospitalized many times to treat tumors until age 8. I was so proud of my skill and my enthusiasm for sewing has never left me over the next 65 yrs! When I was 8 my neighbor who was a high school home ec teacher taught me to sew using her old singer sewing machine. My mom had no interest in sewing but she did encourage my efforts and bought me my first machine, an old used singer in the traditional black with gold lettering when I was 12. Sewing has been a wonderful thread running through my life with lots of good memories attached. My neighbor also encouraged me to enter my completed garments in the county fairs and I always encourage folks to do that still as it may encourage another person to take up sewing. new subbie.
I had a space very similar to yours for probably 20 years, nowhere near as neatly organised though. Just an odd shaped corner in the dining room. When we moved to our current house however, my room is now 6.5 x 7 meters and its laid out with cupboards and benches for my machines. I have a drop side cutting table! A fabric storage unit. I made an ironing station, its 155 wide x 50cm so i can iron the entire width of the fabric in one go with no annoying narrow end! With storage for all the ironing aids underneath. Oh my gosh! Some days i just want to lay on the floor and make lint angels, its sooo wonderful after ‘making do’ for so long 🥰

For me at this moment my sewing space is in the dining room , and sometimes I feel frustrated because have a space for my stash and notions, but when I saw your well organized space I started to get ideas about how to organize all my fabrics, and notions. Thank you for sharing and forgive my grammar because English is not my first language (I 'm Mexican ), but I try to do my best.

O so efficiently organized. I am inspired to do some house-keeping of my sewing space.
Love your sewing organization and how you’ve made it work. My 2nd bedroom is now also my office since I’ve been working from home since March, my sewing space, exercise room with spin bike, guest room and catbox room. I would love more room!
When the kids were small, the dining room table was my sewing room. Now they are gone, I picked the great room over the garage. I love my room, but who can find anything now! Sometimes small is better. Where do you keep your fabric stash!
I love your sewing space! I have very little room for sewing and crafting supplies, so I enjoyed watching the tour and spotting organisation ideas and tips.
WOW, I don’t know how you are doing it. You are a very talented lady! I know many people who have a lot of spaces and a lot of tools, but they don’t have even half of your knowledge! Bravo 👏

I knew your sewing space would look completely neat and tidy just from the background of your intro. When I started sewing many years ago I did it on my dining room table so it required tiding up after each sewing session and I believe that for some that is much better than having a larger space that you can close the door on which then tends to sometimes lead to chaos.I too have always used my serger standing up, I don't really believe that I could do any other way. I also sometimes sew standing up. Thanks for sharing this with us.
I never thought about standing up sewing....I'm going to make that happen.......when I get my sewing space organized!
Love it,so compact and loads of ideas esp as many people have only small spaces. Great to see someone who produces such beautiful garments does so from ur kitchen- think lots of us will be planning an ikea trip and searching for a bureau to refashion 👌😘
Wow. I am so impressed not just with the efficiency but the way you've done it all in white, keeping it so clean! Mine would be a mess all the time, although maybe not if it was right off the kitchen since I can't cook in a mess! lol! It's a beautiful space and you're so wise to have just what you need, not a whole lot of extra stuff simply because you've collected it. I especially love your book collection and need to check into those that you use regularly - I think a visit to my library is in order. Thank you so much for this tour, it was lovely!

Put a dryer sheet in the bag with your vintage patterns to get rid of the musty smell.
Our spaces and contents are so alike , is a clapper worth buying ? Don’t you ever think , if you done a stock take to see , how much it’s all worth . Alex’s drawers aren’t they they best & Kallax . I just purchased the Ikea table that rises and falls so I can have a cutting table.

I found the bureau and cabinet. I bought mine off of Facebook Marketplace as the top is no longer sold by Ikea. IMPORTANT TIP ON VINTAGE PATTERN SMELL: Suzanne, put a charcoal briquette into the bag with your vintage patterns (you might want to wrap it in a piece of cloth first) and close your back back up. After a week or so the smell should be gone!

I use clear storage boxes. I also store items (zippers, buttons, etc.) by color. I once stored by item, but found color works better for me.
Excellent set up. I'm very spoilt with having a room but then when I had a house full I sewed on the table

One of the reason that old patterns smell is that they were probably made with a cheaper mechanical-pulp paper which did not filter out the tannins and other chemicals in the pulp. These cause the paper to yellow over time and cause some of that musty, old-book smell, though it's not responsible for 100% of the smell.
I would like to know how you store your fabrics et how you store pieces of fabrics after sewing

For the musty smell for the patterns in the bag you can put a commercial bought small bag of charcoal to absorb the smell.
Loved the tour, where do you keep your fabric?

Thanks for sharing. What is the number for the vogue pattern you showed? To freshen the vintage patterns put some arm and hammer baking soda in the bag in which they are being stored.
Try putting your smelly vintage patterns in a plastic bag with cat litter or a dryer sheet. We do that in our library.

Hi, I know that this is very late in the game, but this is when I found your channel. Apologies for not finding you earlier.
In regards to this video I do have a question.Where did you get your sewing ham, please and what brand id it? It looks larger than the usual 20 cm or so that I seem to be looking at and wanting a slightly larger one. I'm in no rush, but if I can get that covered I'd ve very pleased.
On another note: I think my husband would love it if I was even a 0.0001 times more like you, when it comes to organization. He would be you if he was sewing, while I have taken over the whole kitchen table with my lovely vintage, green, 1961 Husqvarna Automatic sewing machine that does everything I ask of it, except for buttonholes, but I've seen a vintage device for that. On top of that I have a small bin for small fabric scraps, two shoe boxes of miscellaneous sewing things, a couple of round plastic containers for my markers, seam un-pickers, sewing gage, scissors etc. Then some fabrics, some clothes waiting to be repaired, I'm sure you get my drift. I'm very impressed with how you keep so organized. In another life I'm going to be more like you, and make my wonderful husband happier. Yours, Ann

I sew at a dry cleaner and I have my over locker where I stand up to use it. My space is narrow and I don't want more chairs in the way

I'm also thinking of getting the IKEA kallax for my storage. Thx for tips helping me think through the way I group supplies. Does butting cutting mats work? I heard you mention that. I always thought I'd get skipping

I am looking today some sewing area or room videos to get motivation to organize mine that looks like a hoarders room. Where are your fabrics? Did I miss them?
I have a whole room for sewing but I always sew at my kitchen table and all my workings sit on the table all the time! I’m not tidy!

You have a larger amount of haberdashery than me. I have 2 large boxes of fabric and 10 plus small boxes of patterns. So I think you probably have some fabric on hand to sew.
Hope you crack back into corsetry! I was wondering when you would delve into that universe. My very first seeing project was a fully steel-boned tight-lacing because I am a masochist and felt like doing 600+ hours of research back when things had to be scrounged for in the very depths of the internet. Corsetry is about as much work as a Chanel jacket but with less hand sewing and more engineering challenges.
My sewing room is the no longer needed kids room, too. Nice video. But i miss the fabric. Where do you storage it?

Drop some whole bay leaves in your vintage bag of patterns. Perhaps it will take care of the bad smell. I use them for my sweater storage...
