    FYI, the land speed record (LSR) is standardized as "the speed over a course of fixed length, averaged over two runs. Two runs are required in opposite directions within one hour, and a new record mark must exceed the previous one by at least one percent to be validated." So, not only must your craft beat the *Thrust SCC* speed record, which was done over a 1-mile distance, it needs to turn around and do it again! You gotta play by the rules, engineer!

      Thrust SSC didn't didn't hit that speed in a mile. It was a total trip of 14 miles, on power for around 9, and the last mile on power was the measured mile. In Kerbal it's harder, because there isn't a 14 mile runway to play with.

  • @Niyucuatro
    @Niyucuatro ปีที่แล้ว +11

    If the aerodynamics in this one are similar to what they were in the version of the first game i played, the flipping is caused because as fuel gets used, the vehicle is heavier on the back than in the front, so the tip of the rod has less terminal velocity than the base. this makes the base faster than the tip, flipping the entire vehicle. Adding more weight to the front wold help reduce flipping.

    • @peperoni_pepino
      @peperoni_pepino ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While that is a possible cause I think that here the wheels are just bugged. Matt Lowne mentioned that the wheels friction control thingy was not working correctly, and that is probably still true.

    • @crusher1080
      @crusher1080 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, in this game the reason the craft is swerving is because of the friction control function on the wheels, can disable it since it is bugged and all of your crafts will swerve due to that.

      @Niyucuatro ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Matt, as much as I love watching you fail at KSP I do have a few tips that might help.
    First, there are hotkeys to maximize and minimize throttle values in an instant (i.e. not sliding up then sliding down, but instead immediately jumping between 0% and 100%). You'll have to double check me because it's been a minute but I believe they're X for 0% and T for 100%?
    Worth noting that doesn't work super well for jet engines as they still need to spool up and down, but super useful for liquid-fueled rocket engines.
    Also, you can drain the fuel tanks which will definitely help you get up to speed faster (less weight to accelerate). For a run this short I doubt you need even one full tank, but they're still useful structurally. If you right-click on a tank in the VAB you can see a slider that allows you to remove all the fuel and oxidizer. You can do the same with the solid fuel boosters for both weight purposes and for shutoff purposes. Since you can't stop a solid fuel booster from burning once it has started, this is useful to time the shutoff.
    Also useful for building airplanes because you can use Fuel/LOX tanks (if they have a convenient shape, for instance) but remove the LOX so that you don't have unnecessary weight when using air-breathing engines.

    Vehicle stability is easy to asses when it comes to the basic layout: draw a line thru front and rear left tires. Then draw a line from left rear to front right. The angle between the two lines gives you an idea of the basic stability of the vehicle. The narrower the angle, the more stable. And of course, if the angle exceeds 45 degrees, the vehicle will not stay straight at all without constant steering inputs.

      I got to 1341m/s with a single whiplash engine. I don't really know how to get any more from the engine though

    In addition to @crusher1080 comment about diabling friction control on the front wheels, I would say based on the part where it wanted to go backwards that too much of your mass is behind the center of lift/drag. I imagine those engines are heavy and therefore that end will actually want to lead.

    Ngl. I was two seconds from clicking off because I can only watch you fail so many times. But that wheel monstrosity actually working while rolling made me spit out my drink. Ridiculous.

    You can improve it by switching some methalox tanks for cargo bays to lower the mass that needs to be accelerated.

      Swapping to air-breathing engines should also help. Stick a ramjet on there and you can trim all the oxidizer for a ton of weight savings.

    • @jonassackarndt1174
      @jonassackarndt1174 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GremlinSciences I think they have more specific impulse but less thrust per weight, as you get a lot of weight from the tires that doesn't seem like a thing i would 100% recommend for the land speed record. But of course if you have available oxygen why not use it.

    to keep it from spinning out, you need to turn off *"Auto Friction Control"* on the front wheel.

    Matt, there should be an option when you look at the wheels to disable friction control. Normally it seems to be the reason the wheels act like that!

    I've never thought about using so many wheels before. it's actually kind of brilliant for this game since it's still so buggy.

    If you are looking to do a spoiler, the object on a car that makes down force, it is literally an upside-down wing, normally oriented wing create lift, upside-down makes down force.

    You were on the right path with downforce. If your going to jettison your boosters perhaps it's worth having tiny wings on them and making them pull up and away from your craft as they jettison.
    I might also suggest looking at top fuel dragsters or land speed record vehicles for ideas on downforce.

      Nah it's a setting. He needs to turn off friction on the front wheels.
