    DISCLAIMER!! I no longer am recommending Remington Thunderbolts. The level of leading is so high it ended up ruining my barrel. I have heard this from many other people so please keep that in mind. I like Aguila super extras which run good and dont lead up your barrel from non jacketed ammunition.

      Totally agree. I quit using Thunderbolts about 15 years ago. They messed up my nephews .22 rifle so bad I had to clean it out every 30 rounds or so. Like all gritty inside the gun.

    I bought a Sig Mosquito (same gun) in 2015. In the beginning it jammed and had problems. But since I liked the feel of it, I kept shooting it. Got past a 1000 rounds and it was working flawless. In fact, Sig said it would take at least 500 rounds to break-in. Then a guy at the range talked me into selling it. Wish I had not sold it. So last week I bought the Firefly. Will probably need to break this one in same as the other.

    Very good review! I am especially glad you did a 3000 round review of this pistol. I recently purchased a GSG Fire-Fly. After shooting it about 100 rounds, I contacted the customer service tech-rep. at ATI in South Carolina with several questions. The tech-rep. told me that the pistol cannot be considered fully "broken-in" until AT LEAST 800 to 1000 rounds are fired. This came as a surprise to me! Therefore, while fun and enjoyable to watch, a LOT of the other videos on the Fire-Fly are shot "brand new" and "just out of the box". Unfortunately, such reviews are not
    a true measure of the pistol because the tests are conducted without the pistol being fully broken-in. This easily leads to erroneous conclusions and false assumptions on the capabilities of the Firefly pistol. I also agree with your comments on Remington ammunition. I do not buy it anymore, it is quite dirty. Recently, I have had good performance with Aquila Super High-Velocity, 1280 fps, 38gr. hollow point, cu- plated. I buy it from the local Rural King store and it shoots well in my FireFly, S&W 22A-1 and Browning Buckmark UFX Camper. Also, I really like the de-cocking leaver feature on the FireFly. The trigger pull in the SA mode is fine for me. However, the DA mode trigger is quite stiff. I do not try to shoot it in the DA mode. Of course, the Fire Fly SA trigger pull cannot fairly be compared to the S&W 22A-1 or the Buck Mark. However, for an inexpensive pistol, in SA mode that is great fun to shoot, it delivers fairly good accuracy and is acceptable to me.

    I have to be honest, I just got mine a few days ago. Mine isn't suppressor ready. I was originally looking for the P17, but just about every shop I went to, they were sold out. I went to an outdoor sports store, and there was a MASSIVE amount of gun buyers so I was trying to get through the crowd to look at what they had. I noticed that they didn't have the P17, but they did have a TX22, but before I got to the actual counter, the salesman got the gun for someone else since they ended up buying it. I happened to look over next to where the TX22 was and seen this lonely pistol laying there. I asked to handle it and really liked the design and feel of it better than the P17. Only wished it came with 2 extra mags, but most handguns usually only have 1 mag.
    It's nice and small, but not purse sized.
    It uses 22lr ammo, which is cheaper on the wallet.
    It has a softer spring in the box for slower velocity ammo.
    It was under $250.
    I think it'll make a fine everyday carry since it is lighter weight than most 9mm or bigger handguns.
    Is it perfect, no. No gun is. Is it just for target plinking, meh, could be. Can you use it as an everyday carry? YES.
    It doesn't have to pop heads like a water balloon to get someone to stop. It just has to stop the aggressor. .22lr can do that.
    I was also thinking about getting a Hi-Point Carbine AND matching pistol. I may do that a little later. In the mean time, since I don't have a gun nut ego about size of bullets, I think I'll be happy with mine.

    I picked up a black & tan version last winter. Most of what i had read was it was fussy at first with ammo. Mine definitely is. It runs CCI, Blazer & Golden bullets well. It doesn't like Winchester or Federals at all... I'm using the spring that came in it so I figure that would be the dif. I enjoy it. Nice gun. I've swapped out the magazine follower to increase the capacity to 14.. Good review.. Thanks

Mine hates bulk ammo, fussy w Aguila, but a dream w Winchester XX, Remington, CCI and anything w a jacket.

      I've heard of some older models having that issue. Mine came with a pretty beveled feed ramp and barrel matchup. Luckily I haven't had any feed issues, just low power ammo issues preventing the gun from even attempting to cycle a new round. Great tip though if rounds are not feeding and getting locked up 👍

    Thank you for your very fair reviews of this gun. I have owned a Mosquito for many years and also own the newer Firefly. To me, these were never meant to be serious firearms but they do make excellent target shooting guns and guns for safety training and especially take down and cleaning which they need a lot. Failure to feed, failure to fire and failure to eject are all possible .22lr occurrences in any semi-automatic magazine fed pistol or rifle no matter who made the firearm or what it cost. That is part of the price of using the .22lr platform. Every semi automatic 22lr firearm I have shot or owned has experienced this. With the Mosquito, I threw away the high velocity spring after two magazines and that was after reading the manual carefully and using 36 to 40 grain/1250+ fps high velocity ammo. That spring was so stiff it did not allow the slide to fully go through its motion and stove piped almost every round. The standard velocity spring worked fine with the recommended ammo. I have since replaced that original spring with one from Taylor Tactical which works great. The Firefly supplied springs are more like the original standard velocity Sig spring. I did slightly enlarge the magazine lips by half a millimeter at the slug end which definitely has helped failure to feed along with keeping the bore ramp really clean. I clean and lube after every 200 rounds or so. The really heavy double action trigger pull to me is a safety feature. No one in their right mind would have deliberately designed this gun to be double action fired with 14 pound weight. These are really fun guns when they are sighted in, broken in and are used according to their original intention. If you are looking for an affordable, really reliable 22lr handgun or one that will not malfunction keep looking. Maybe the Taurus TX22 is as good as advertised. I haven't used one yet. I really like the Ruger SR22 but it will choke on ammo just like the rest of them. For now, I will keep enjoying these fun insects.

      I agree 100% with your experience and thanks for the tips! I picked up a tx22 Friday so hopefully I can run it this week and see how it does. I still like the firefly/mosquito for what it is. It's a fun pinker once you get it dialed in 👍

    Hey guys, thanks for watching! The 3 different sights included are for different heights and the recoil spring in the gun is for hotter loads above 1250fps and the extra recoil spring is for standard pressure. Hope it helps!!

    • @timt1346
      @timt1346 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm going to give this a try. I haven't really paid a ton of attention to the muzzle velocity speeds of the rounds I use, but I know that just about anything that says "quiet" or "sub-sonic" I can guarantee won't cycle through any of my 22s worth a hill of beans.
      Interesting question though: is there any detriment or damage to the gun if you fire a hot round through it on the lighter spring? Or does it just recoil differently?

    • @FunWithGuns
      @FunWithGuns  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know I was thinking the same thing. It may be harsher on the slide but I'm not positive. I was thinking maybe hot rounds with the lower spring should definitely do the trick but dont want to run the risk of breaking it. I'm going to look into that though!

    • @timt1346
      @timt1346 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well shucks.... Looks like the short spring was what was installed when I got my gun so let's hope that it's just part of the break-in period and not an issue with the gun.
      I think I could really use polishing the slide, trigger and ramp to lighten the trigger up and ease in loading. I noticed also that my magazine has a really tight section where you have to push pretty hard to install the mag where it's nice and smooth on the SW compacts. It's actually not a bad thing and I've gotten used to it, but it's just something I noticed last night while handling it. I lightly filed the chamfers at the magazine well and tried to thin out the ribs and high spots on the inside of the well where the wear spots were appearing on the magazine itself. The spring is strong enough to eject the mag no problem, but it's similar to the TX22 in that it only just pushes it out of the well when inverted (superficial test, I know. Just trying to get it smooth as possible).

    • @FunWithGuns
      @FunWithGuns  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timt1346 I hear ya man. I heard the spring installed is for heavier loads and the one in the box is for lighter but it looks the opposite. Honestly I didnt even mess with the one in the box. May be worth a shot? I didnt polish anything and I think the new models come with a beveled feed ramp vs the old ones that are very harsh. Mine was fine in that area. That trigga should be like butta now 🤣👍. Always a nice upgrade!

    • @timt1346
      @timt1346 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will give it a try just to get it out of my system (only takes a few seconds to swap it out once you get the takedown figured out).
      My trigger is really heavy. It could really use some help to get it down to maybe a 5#/10# split but it's usable in single action at what? 7lbs? Too much for my kid to like it but the trigger is comfortable.
      I can see some edges on the ramp that could use bring smoothed out, but it's pretty close to the SWs I own. Can't hurt to try in any regard. It's a cheap gun so I don't expect the world from it in normal state. With some tinkering it could be a good match to my other pistols. If not I could sell it and but something else.

For self defense training it affords great practice for clearing malfunctions. I’m not being sarcastic. I truly love this pistol. I don’t find the trigger to be a deterrent in single or Double action. It is a perfect training companion for my P225A1. Thank you for a frank and what-you-see-is-what-you-get review. I also was worried that I got lemon. I’m just going to enjoy Shooting it now. Do you think polishing the friction prone surfaces would help?

    • @FunWithGuns
      @FunWithGuns  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the kind words! That p225A1 is a sweet pistol!! I have heard polishing the feed ramp helps on older models helps. Mine is relatively new and had a nice bevel from the ramp to the breech face so I left it alone. Some older ones had a bump that could cause feeding issues. I also clean the mags after every outing as they start to get finnicky after a couple or few hundred rounds. For what it's worth, I usually use wilson combat grease on my guns but use oil on this guy to help give it more friction. I would say try swapping out the recoil springs with the other one provided for average speed ammo. I left the spring that it came with in it and have been using hot ammo with over 1250 fps and it's been running almost flawless (less than 1% failure rate). Hope it helps for what its worth. And I enjoy the training aspect of it as well 👍Thanks for tuning in!!

Last night I polished not only the feed ramp but the slide surface that contacts the hammer and the edges of the mag openings as well. Picked up a bulk pack of Rem Golden Bullets (1280fps) on the way. Gun ran 100% better until around the 300rd Mark then started failing. I soaked the feed and chamber area with Rem Gun Oil and that helped a lot. Called it a day after about another 50rds. I will thoroughly clean both mags before taking it out again. I am a 60+ yr old shooter and time has taken its toll on my eyesight. Nonetheless the accuracy of this pistol is nothing less than crazy. Thanks for the tip.

I shot Aquila round nose 40 grain and it seemed to like it; also shot Winchester Super X and no issues with that as well. When I tried the Federal Match Shot it was inconsistent on cycling the round. The accuracy at 10 years for all ammo was very good. I like the the controls on this gun and especially like the de-cocker and overall feel of the gun in my hand. We are all fortunate to have such a variety of 22lr to choose from. My favorites are the Taurus TX22, the Ruger SR22, and the S&W M&P 22 Compact. Just picked one up. Haven't shot it yet, but I will be soon. I feel I way over-paid for it ($399) but .22LR pistols are getting harder to find for an everyday backup carry gun. I have high hopes for this tool considering the price. $100 more and I could've gotten a Glock 44 or for around the same price or less a Ruger SR22.

    Thanks for the great review, and lol that Brothers shirt is awesome. I absolutely love the look of this pistol, but I feel like it's a headache trap just waiting for me. I've really been wanting a 22lr pistol & AR so I can still shoot on the cheap, but they need to shoot & run reliably. Because of that I'm gonna go with the Taurus TX-22 once I have the $, and can find 1. I've heard the M&P pistols run reliably also, but held 1 at my local gs and wasn't crazy about it. It just felt like a toy it was so small. I have pretty big hands tho so that may be part of it. So far it's looking like a TX-22 for pistol, and the M&P 15/22 for an AR

    Just picked one up yesterday. Right out of the gates it had a bunch of misfires and stovepipes. I could reload the ammo and it would shoot, so I'm not sure if it's bad ammo or what? I have to MP22 compacts and they run like garbage as well. Can't seem to either find good enough ammo or how to keep them operable like I had hoped.
    I will try the lighter spring like you mentioned. I still have to clean the manufacturing sludge out of it so I honestly wasn't expecting it to run perfect. I also think maybe the cold had something to do with it.
    That being said, once I got into a decent groove with it, the rounds fed a little better and the grouping started to tighten up. I definitely like the feel of this "mini P226" as it's very similar to my MK25 (same desert team color too!). Hopefully I'll get a chance to try again soon. I think I'll go back to aguila when this case of rounds runs out.
    I've tried mini mags, stingers, Aguila standard, Federal, and just about every other box of stuff available at Bass Pro and Green top. Can't say any of them run any better than the next. They all hang up in the SWs even if I'm shooting them. It's 10X worse if the kids shoot. Can't limp-wrist these little semi-auto 22s.

They were kind enough to replace it, and a new one is just as crappy. Don't get me wrong it's a fun gun 22 caliber threaded barrel double action single action $200. But today for an example we shot three boxes of 50 and I'll bet there was an easy 25 unforward bullets that we picked up off the ground that we had malfunctions on. Yeah so is it a fun gun yeah would I recommend it to anybody no I don't think so. The Walther coat 1911 chambered in 22, I've had that since June of this pasture and I'll bet I put 2,500 rounds through it at least, it eats about anything I put in it. I noticed when it's dirty I start getting some malfunctions but that's pretty typical with any 22 pistol. It's funny when it's dirty the slide operates so slow you could actually see it moving, kind of an indication of maybe take it home and clean it LOL

    • @FunWithGuns
      @FunWithGuns  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, after you load a round in the chamber it is single action for every shot unless you decock the hammer. Some people carry double action pistols decocked so they have a heavier initial trigger pull for additional safety in preventing accidental firing. I was just pointing out that the double action is extremely heavy and long and dont recommend it. Mainly just wanted to explain the trigger. All you have to do is not decock it to have single action for every shot but I know some people dont understand how double action works.

    I have the Walther (Umarex) Colt 1911 .22LR, but am still interested in another .22 LR because they are fun and cheap to shoot. The Ruger, Glock and S&W are too small for my liking. The FN is too expensive for a .22. That leaves me with the Firefly, Taurus, Sig P322, Walther PPQ .22 . I shot the Taurus and Sig and like the Sig much better. The Taurus TX22 gets good reviews, but I just didn't care for it. Since the Sig has 20 round mags, it's worth a bit more to me than the Walther PPQ and isn't really much more expensive when you add the 2nd mag you have to buy with the PPQ. If I buy the Firefly over the Sig and must use CCI ammo which is generally $.02/rd more expensive than other HV rounds, then pretty soon the cheap Firefly is no longer so cheap. The Remington Thunderbolts probably work well, before they foul the barrel, because they are both 40 grain and HV (1255 fps.) My question is how successful are the following ammos in the Firefly: 1) Aguila copper plated HV 40 g, 1255 FPS (should work well), 2) Remington Golden Bullet, either 36 or 40g, roughly 1250 fps, (also should work in 40g) 3) Armscor HP 36g, 1250 fps and 4) Federal copper plated HP, 36g, 1260 fps? The latter two may be too light? I have read the "blue box" Federal didn't work for some and they may mean #4. You indicated the Aguila Super Extras work. Anything else including those I listed?

      I had this issue, turns out drifting the rear sight to far to the right can cause issues. Let me explain, the breachblock is actually held in place with the rear sight. Not a great system in itself. But if you are messing around and drift the sight far enough it can disengage from the breach block and cause feeding issues, failures to feed, double feeding, failures to return back into battery after firing and maybe more. I'd suggest taking it to a gunsmith, especially if you are having trouble recentering the rear sight. And dependeng on how hard you tried to recenter it you may need to order a couple parts. Hope this helps

  • @cheeseymann
    @cheeseymann 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've got other comments on here but this video popped back up in my suggestions and as I've recently passed the 3000rnd mark with my personal firefly figured I'd slap another comment with things I've noticed.
    1. The extra spring: a handy little feature I suppose but kinda impractical long term I feel. It takes time to change out the spring and I dont see me or many people toting the extra into the field just in case. Just find a round that works in yours with whichever spring and stick to it.
    2. The grip: I noticed under fast deployment and heavy use the grip can shift a bit due to it being 2 halves rather than a solid piece. I fixed this by wrapping the grip in electrical tape a few layers thick, I also took the opportunity to add a chute cord lanyard loop using the tape as well. Idk how many of us use a lanyard on our field pistols during a hunt but its 10 bucks that will prevent you from losing a handgun longterm.
    3. The rear sight: be careful about drifting the rear sight to far right as the rear sight drift screw also holds the breach block in place. Drifting it to far can result in the 2 becoming disconnected and can cause misfeeds, jams, and an assortment of other issues. And can be pricey to fix if you strip the drift screw trying to reattach the 2 as they are screwed together blind.
    4.ammo: the thing definitely likes heavier ammo, 36gr or above. It takes a bit to move that slide.

      @@cheeseymann I believe the one installed is for heavier loads and the one in the box (the shorter one) is for lighter loads. Be careful as I believe they are tapered at one end and the wider end faces the back of the pistol and smaller end faces the muzzle. Hope this helps!

    Do you still own this pistol? As a 22 I know they are finnicky, is it worth buying

    • @FunWithGuns

      I actually sold it. For the price I would recommend a taurus tx22 since the price of these have gone up and the Taurus is more reliable for not much more.

      Yes, they are interchangeable. I called ATI and right now they have the non threaded barrel in stock, but they do not have the threaded barrel. You can go to their website and have them notify you when it's back in stock.

    Ive absolutely always found cci ammo to be underpowered without ifs ands or buts, its junk. Thats not counting Stingers, can't say as they're too expensive for 22 ammo I won't buy it.

    In my mosquitoe,, she ONLY liked stingers, mini-mags and LESS wouldn't cycle. Anew 7.00 spring off ebay.. cycles cheep stuff just fine.
    *AVOID LEAD BULLETS (thinderbolts) if possible, they lead the gun up really awfully. Try to use something like Goldens instead.
